JANUARY 26, 2015 Coming back to school after break really got me to start thinking about what I want this project to actually be. I have come to the conclusion that this project isn’t all about me. As much as I want to make it all about me, I think I can add some of “me” into it. The important part for me to realize is that I need to do something that will enhance my portfolio. My original plan of making this all a print based project, is not what I want to do in my future career. I am passionate about the digital space. That is what I want to do in the future is to focus on UI/UX design. I have realized I can still take my base ideas and transform them into something better. I love creating digital systems. So that is what my degree project should be about. Now the important part is to figure out where to begin. At this point I need to figure out my users. With the content I am using or will be using, the best bet for an audience is millenials. That’s where I need to start. What is it about millennials that makes them different? What interests them? Time for some research.

JANUARY 30, 2015 Today was a fun day. I got to explore Westside with Brittany Hand. That was the first time I actually went there, and we found some really cool places. I hope to go back to Westside story again when I have more money. I feel a lot better about my degree project. I nailed down a good question to ask that focuses more on what I want to do as far as what the end result could be. I am a screen based designer and there is no way around it. It’s what I love to do. So my work should reflect that. I really enjoyed doing Gizmo last semester with Nick. So I hope this semester I can make a system based on my question. Right now the question is “How can I create a social community targeted towards millennials to help answer questions about their curiosity of the world?” I feel like this question better states what I want to do and look into doing. I also helped my sister do a little hand lettering! I guess it’s not as easy for someone new to it. I didn’t realize this till tonight. I also picked my sister up from school and she told me I looked cute today. She never compliments me. That was nice to hear from her.

Today we worked on getting our schedule around for degree project. Things became to seem real. The stress is already setting in and it hasn’t even really began ha. After setting my schedule I feel better knowing what is going to happen. This weekend I was having some major mood swings. Towards the negative. I need to start taking my meds regularly. This weekend was rough for me. The Super Bowl half time show was the best part yesterday. I am just happy I woke up in a better mood. Jodi also came over yesterday, that was nice I missed her. I will finish up my audience research this week. Tonight I had to make 3 self portraits based on memory for my print making class. That made me think deep about myself. Scary. Other than that, I am excited to create this system for degree project. This will look great in my portfolio since I am a screen base designer. I have been thinking about Valentine’s Day and what I might get Kalan. This is hard.
Brittany and I went to Southwest Boulevard and looked around at the typography. We found some cool Mexican restaurants and a grocery store. This cute little Mexican boy came up to us and said hi in Spanish, it was the cutest thing. I also worked on my resume and my website I’m excited to get out in the real world and start making some real money. My mood swings are doing better I’ve been taking my medicine like I am supposed to. I have also been thinking about what I am going to call my system for my degree project will it be why? Curiosity? Something along the lines of those. Also what will be the logo I’ve been starting to think about these things. I also made another print in printmaking yesterday. I’m excited about this class but it’s also really expensive. Tonight I had vegetable soup for dinner and it was really good I also talk to my parents about looking at some places for a summer job or internship! I am excited to see what the future holds for me.

Tonight has been a long one. I have been on campus for 11 hours and ready to go home. Went to printmaking class this morning and got a print done. Then met with Brittany Hand to work on Type 4 project. Then she left and I decided to keep working on it more and finish the presentation. After that I worked on my degree project, and now I’m ready to go home. It’s been a stressful day. I am going to have to get new tires soon and I am not looking forward to that. I am ready to go home and rest my brain. *blows out Jesus candles* (Leaves Studio)
Today was interesting I was so burned out from yesterday. Good lord. I pushed through it though. I worked more on researching my audience and looked at the requirements for the presentation on Monday, and I am officially broke. Yay me. This printmaking class is killing me. Speaking of printmaking, after class I went to the printmaking studio and started working on some of the prints that are due Tuesday! Yay! It was fun. I am waiting for my plate to dry now. I also made Kalan’s transformers print. It looks dope. I forgot a line but o well I guess it’s done and printed. This weekend is going to busy, but tonight I am taking a break and playing video games. Gotta relax sometimes. Working hard all the time takes a toll you.

FEBRUARY 09, 2015 Today I woke up with a migraine and last night I went to bed with one. I went to school and toughed out first class. By then end of first class I felt as if I was running a fever, and confirmed it by other classmates. I helped Jodi get our stuff from her apartment and bring it to class then left school and passed out. When I woke up 4.5 hours later. I still had a fever and a migraine today has been rough. I hope I feel better tomorrow. Good news though first presentation for degree project is done and over with! I seem to be in a good spot! #96daystillgraduation

I went to school and did normal school stuff. Then came home to clean out the fridge like mom wanted. Kalan got his present for Valentine’s Day and was super excited. He thought I bought the blanket. I am glad he liked the present. I spent a good amount of time on it. I made little hearts to go on top of everything and they have cute little quotes on them. For example one says “I think you are lacking in vitamin me” lol so cute.
Today I went to printmaking class and did 2 prints. Still have 3 to do before next Tuesday. Then went birthday present shopping for my sister because her birthday is tomorrow. Jodi went with me too. She wanted me to take her t-ping for her birthday. I told her that was too sketchy for me.

Today I worked hard on my degree project and my brand development. I have my keywords and my name ideas. I had a vision from the beginning and decided to go for it for a logo design. Not sure if I like it 100% but we will see how it transfers into the digital world. I really wanted to connect the question mark to the why. After class I stayed at school and started working with Jodi on our spacial monument. It is pretty much done and it even lights up. I came home to celebrate Kirah’s birthday. She turns 15. I can’t believe it. I’m so proud of the young lady she has become. I got her a poster by Easy Tiger and she loved it. I also got Kalan’s present in the mail for Valentine’s Day!! I can’t wait to open it. It is going to be perfect I am sure.

Today I had to go to Jodi’s house, and watch her dog Boss while she went to Texas for a day. I had a good Valentine’s Day and played Guild Wars 2 with Kalan all day. This was my first day off in 12 days and I still woke up at 8 a.m.
Today we had our morning class off, but we had to come in for our second class for our final critique. This marked our last project with Kidwell. It’s pretty sad. He gave us each one word to describe us and I was honored with the word tenacious. I started a Pintrest board with some branding inspiration. I am just looking at different logo designs, and in the future I will more forward into some interface design. Real life Is coming so fast.

FEBRUARY 18, 2015 Today we went to the WWI museum to look at how they displayed things. This was my first time at a war museum. It was very sad to see, and how big the holes were from bombs just seemed unreal. I was interested in the medical tools since we are so advanced in medicine these days. What they were using was scary. I can’t imagine the pain people went through.

FEBRUARY 20, 2015 Oh good lord this week has been hectic. Three major projects due and trying to find time to work on degree project. In other news degree project is still moving along. Slowly but surely. Two logo ideas are forming, and a big presentation due on Monday. This weekend is going to be filled with progress. Well Sunday will be. Tonight I am relaxing for the first time this week, and tomorrow Mom is going to see Fifty Shades of Gray with me for a date night. Sunday I will be in studio all day and night, but I work better in studio and for long periods of time. It is hard to work at home with my parents wanting me to do stuff, and Boo running around screaming. I am glad I waited to have kids. In other news Propaganda 3 emailed me back and I get to meet with them next week!!!! So excited to go and meet with them! I need to go get a new outfit. This weekend will be nice.

DIRECTION 1 I decided to go with the name why, because this platform will house people’s questions. So what better way to name it then what it really is. The colors consist of highlights of blue and yellow representing a sense of curiosity and exploration. Paired with a script typeface to circle back around to being personal.

DIRECTION 2 For Remark I wanted to name the system after what these questions really are, and they are people’s remarks. The color scheme gives a sense of thought and curiousness. With a script typeface that looks handwritten. The dot symbolizes a emphasis made when someone feels confident writing something by hand.

Today I cranked away on degree project. Homework for 10 hours can wear you out, but a stellar presentation is priceless. I am happy where it is heading right now and I can’t wait to give my presentation tomorrow. My Mom told me I have good work ethic today. That was nice to hear. I feel like all I ever do is homework and sleep. She told me it will pay off in the long run.
So today we gave a presentation of our degree project to the printmaking seniors. I thought mine went really well. I seem to be ahead of everyone but that’s just my thoughts. Keep working. Head down and work. Determination. At the moment I am stuck between 2 different branding, but at this point I think I am leaning towards the Remark Branding. We also got to start working on senior show ideas. I am in a group with Morgan and Jodi which is pretty exciting, because we are doing a circus theme called Class Act! I have a Interview tomorrow with Propaganda 3. So nervous my mom said I had to get fake nails! Haha

I could not have asked for a better interview with Propaganda 3. It seemed like they liked me a lot. It was nice to be able to be myself with them, and talk about something that really interests me. The vibe and the place seemed really nice. They also had a dog in studio which was really sweet because I love dogs. I think this will turn out good. Thank you Jesus for this Blessing. Things seem to be looking up.

FEBRUARY 27, 2015 I made some advancements today in degree project. I decided to go with the remark branding and colors. I talked to Kelly and she helped me figure out what needed to be done with the remark typeface. The typeface I am using is called Cheddar Jack, and it is the most screwed up typeface I have seen. I was in the zone designing and Nick came over and asked me how it was going. My response was: “What in the flying f*** was Cheddar Jack thinking.” That sums up my day. I focused on making the typeface more fluid so that it actually looked like someone’s handwriting. Once this logotype is nailed down I will focus more on wireframes.

BOOK MAKING WORKSHOP Today we had a book making workshop and learned how to create hand made bindings with needles and thread.

remark BEFORE The circles over the typeface represent the key areas I focused on the most for fixing.
FIXING CHEDDAR JACK The amount of problems with this typeface is remarkable to say the least. I started analog with moving things where they should be, as if someone was actually writing this by hand. Understanding where the letters would connect within real cursive would help give this the credibility of not looking 100% like a typeface. I used tracing paper and printed out the typeface. After figuring out the placement of letters, I started with connecting the R and E and moved on from there.

MARCH 03, 2015 Working on my Degree Project book for Emmy is really helping me keep track of my process. The remark logo is complete!! Huzzah! I am excited to keep moving forward and thinking about the user tasks and wireframes now. Things are going good. I am also exploring different options for some spreads in my book using my quotes and my printmaking elective. Today we had a senior meeting to order our cap and gowns and get some information on graduation. Is this real life, time is flying by so fast.

MARCH 04, 2015 Today I met with Propaganda 3 for my second interview. I found out that it will be a summer internship that is paid! I am so excited!! It went really well I do believe, and they said I would get more information in a week or so. I also worked on my degree project and figuring out some scenarios, my users, and started some high fidelity sketches. Midterm is Monday all ready. I can’t believe it. This weekend is going to be busy, busy!

SUGAR SHIT I created the word shit from sugar, by using my driver’s license, and moving the sugar around very carefully.
MARCH 07, 2015 Today we had a workshop with Casey Ligon. That was awesome. She made the word Wander out of fruit pebbles and I made the word shit out of sugar. We also did some calligraphy which was awesome, because I have always been interested in that. Today I finished my wireframes for my scenarios, and started creating the digital wireframes for the main hub of my app and website. Earlier in the week I asked my fellow Facebook peeps if they had any questions they wanted to ask. I got over 25 questions from people on Facebook. I was shocked at some of the questions. I also made a post asking people to like it if it was okay for me to use their profile pictures for my site and app. I got over 70 likes. The amount of participation from my friends is awesome and I am thankful. I will use both posts to help populate the content of my site. This weekend will be heads down with more digital wireframes and design phase! Happy Friday!

WHY DID GOD GIVE MEN BEARDS?
SURVEY OF QUESTIONS I conducted a small survey on Facebook, asking friends to comment on a post with some questions they have. The post said: “Alright Ladies and Gents, I need your help to generate some content for my degree project. I am looking for theoretical questions, examples: “Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?” “Why are there other planets than just earth?” These type of questions don’t have a solid answer, but are more of a opinion based answer. So if you could please comment a question you would like to ask the world, it would be more than appreciated and it could show up in my project! comment below, and share with friends if you would like! Thank you! Start Thinking!” From this posted I collected 57 questions. From the collected questions I recieved, I based the cateogories of questions that Remark would use based on the topics discussed within the questions. The five categories are Ethics, Space, Creation, Life, and Miscellanious. Here are some examples of the questions I received.

Today I pulled a 9 hour work day in studio to get ready for midterm critique tomorrow. I got the base of the digital wire frames done and also finished 5 screens within 2 scenarios. I also mocked up the app on my phone. I feel pretty confident my presentation will do good tomorrow. Only 5 more Monday’s until this project is due. I am freaking out a bit.
Midterm critique went super well I think! They said I should be more exploratory with my gestures. In my wireframes I do have some exploratory features. They just don’t know about them yet. Kelsey was there today from Propaganda 3. She told me I did really well and that they are definitely going to be getting a hold of me! That was exciting news. Also Kelly told me today that my presentation was good, and that my work was solid. That was nice to hear. I also got to work on some prints for my printmaking elective. Today I created my favorite piece to date. It says, “Stop focusing on the outcome”. This explains how I felt at the beginning of my degree project as I went around and around in circles with what am I doing. I hope to give this piece to my sister. She seems to love hanging art on her walls. So why not give her my favorite piece?

From this point I would start moving towards a design with colors, appropriate text., and imagery. More wireframes were created during this process, than shown in this book. USER PROFILES AND SCENARIOS When thinking about what I wanted to showcase in the video of how Remark works, I created two hypothetical users and the scenarios they would be participating in. As time went on through out the degree project process these scenarios adjusted either into one or two large scenarios, but over all stayed relatively the same.

Today we had midterm critiques with Emmy for our Type 4 class. She said that this semester I seem really focused. Which I believe is very true. I think it started last semester when I decided that I couldn’t half ass things anymore. This is my senior year, and this is what will make up majority of my portfolio. I need to show what I am made of and try my hardest in everything I do. It’s important for me to feel proud of the work that I am showing someone. Spring break is next week. Time is flying by so fast.
Last night I went to bed with a horrible stomach problem and today I woke up with it still. I went to printmaking hoping that I could get some stuff done in studio, but started running a fever during class. So I went home and decided to pass out. I found out that I have the flu. Great. Of course I would get the flu before spring break. I tried my hardest to get some spreads done today for my degree project book, and successfully made a few more spreads. I am going to be so busy with degree project and my book. It’s crazy. Here’s to no life for the next week.

So this is the day before spring break is over. I stayed home with my siblings and enjoyed my break. We all had a good time, and got to spend some time with each other. Keaton lost his two front teeth this weekend, LUCKY lol! I went into studio today and started cranking on my degree project again. These next few weeks are going to fly by. I can’t believe graduation is right around the corner. Senioritus is starting to settle in. This can’t start and needs to be nipped in the butt.
Today I needed to bust ass on my degree project book since Martin Venesky will be here tomorrow. I had a pretty successful day with work. Stayed in studio for 9 hours. Also experienced the most strangest thing that has ever happened to me. Details of what happened should just be left unsaid. It was interesting to say the least.

I met with Martin today about my spreads for my book. This one. The one you are looking at if reading this. He made some valid points on what I should do with it. Or how it could be better. I wish we had more time to keep working on this. I can always keep working on it after school I guess. I think the design has a lot of potential and something that shouldn’t be overlooked. My initial schedule for degree project is a joke. I am a lot further behind than my original schedule, but this week by Sunday all designs have to basically be finished. It shouldn’t be too hard I have the base for the screens already designed. This just made things really shocking. We also have to present our degree project to Martian on Friday. So we will see how that goes.
Today I got my hair done for the first time in 2 years. I got highlights and a nice little cut. I feel better now about my appearance. Later on I went over to Bri’s house and played Cards Against Humanity which was a lot of fun. Bri ordered some pizza for everyone which was super nice. The people that showed up were Jodi, Bri, Monica, Morgan, Brittany, and Bri’s roommate. I stayed for a few hours and decided to go home. I have been exhausted after this week. I still haven’t heard anything back from Propaganda 3. So tonight I decided that after graduation, I am going to fly to Montana and visit Kalan for 2 weeks. This will be the only time I can escape before real life, and reward myself for my hard work over the last 5 years of college. I have never been to Montana but the pictures that Kalan has sent makes it look beautiful. It will be awesome to meet his friends and be able to spend some more time with him. I am super excited. I am looking to plan the trip from May 20 –June 2.

THE DESIGN PHASE The design phase of Remark lasted for 3 weeks. Remark was completely redesigned not once, not twice, but three times. The amount of improvement from design round 1 to design round 3 is truly a remarkable journey in itself. I would like to thank my teacher Kelly, and my classmates for pushing me to my full extent. I can truly say that I am happy where Remark ended up. Remark started as any other app with a normal vertical scroll feature for the news feed. As time went on and critiques were held, using exploratory gestures in my app was a must. Remark uses 2 different types of feeds. One feed is based on the people the user follows which flows from right to left, and the other is based on public questions which flows left to right. Adding this new feature to my app and desktop, as well as the new design aesthetic brought it to a new horizon. Here are some examples of what the news feed looked like from start to finish.

PRESENTATION AND FINAL I completed Remark on April 22, 2015, and gave my Degree Project presentation on April 24. I could not have asked for a better critique.
