This Symposium marked a momentous milestone, as it was the first time the Hellenic Writers Society and the Kazantzakis Publications [Patroclos Stavrou] worked together in a joint organization of a scholarly and literary gathering, dedicated to our ecumenical author. Of especial import is the fact that the celebration for the anniversary of the birth of Nikos Kazantzakis took place at the historic premises of the Hellenic Writers Society, where Nikos Kazantzakis – the bust of whom is on display there (featured left) – acted as its President between 1945-1949.

The beautiful village of Fylla is a picturesque highland settlement situated just 5 minutes from the town of Chalkida and 40 minutes from Athens. Birthplace of Neofytos Adam (member of the Society of Friends, Bishop of Evrippos and President of the Holy Synod), as well as the Revolutionary War hero, Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, the village of Fylla is brimming with history. The Holy Monastery of St. George (ARMA) and the Holy Church of Panagia Rizokasteliotissa (both exceptional examples of the late Byzantine period), the towering Kasteli (knights’ castle from the 13th century) and the paternal home of Andreas Miaoulis figure prominently in this warm and hospitable village that manages to retain the color and scent of ages gone.

Is love always condemned to be crucified? Read this masterpiece by Nikos Kazantzakis, which became an unforgettable television series, a classic film, an opera and a theatrical play, and contribute, in this way, to the fulfillment of the most basic needs of the village Fylla, this integral part of our historical and cultural legacy.

GERHART HAUPTMANN

VOR SONNENUNTERGANG TRANSLATED BY NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS

The first edition of the unknown translation by Nikos Kazantzakis of Gerhart Hauptmann’s Vor Sonnenuntergang. Nikos Kazantzakis translated the work for the Greek National Theater, which staged the work with great success between 1936-1942, albeit without the final act, perhaps so as not to scandalize the morals of the times. In this edition we provide the text of the Kazantzakian translation rendered in full (Acts 1-4) together with the 5th and final act, translated by Dr. Evi Petropoulou, Assistant Professor at the Department of German Language and Philology of the University of Athens.
