Quarry number

Devastated quarry landscape -- There were once 127 active open-pit quarries during the Edo Period, now only two are active. Rapid depopulation and aging have led to an increasingly devastated landscape.

Previous studies about 16 scrolls -- To figure out aethsetic factors of rock walls in the traditional watercolor paintings, I organized 16 hanging scrolls. Analysis of quarry compositions -- I determined 21 quarries as targets and analyzed them in two scales respectively to correspond with the scrolls.

The waterfall statge

VISITING THE STAGES The main square Visitors would see the rock walls over the square through the designed frames of the disused factories. The stone tiles made up of ore debris are reused as a main material of the square and would have visitors perceive the history of the quarrying industry.

The underwater statge If they continue walking, they can find themselves at the entrance in the forest. The path is linked to the underwater space where the rock wall is, and they can feel the history of quarrying. Going up the ladder, the special landscape spreads out before visitors’ eyes. The floating statge

The floating statge Visitors will enter a new world after they pass through the slit that provide a dramatic landscape transition. And also they can see the critical view on the floating stage located in the center of the quarry lake.

The waterfall statge Going up the trail, they arrive at the waterfall stage. There is a niche path leading to a beautiful waterfall seen from within the tunnel. At the end of the whole visit, the spread of the Inland Sea will be waiting for them.

COMPETITION

EDUCATIONAL SYNERGY

1. Integration of Divided Metropolitan Area

SEOUL URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION 2013 The project is an international ideas competition for student hosted by Seoul Metropolitan Government and Space Syntax Seoul Organizing Committee. The theme of the competition was: TOWARD URBAN INTEGRATION, and the purpose of the event was to collect ideas about urban fabric recovery. The site is freely chosen by participants within the area of Jemulpo-gil Expressway which is 55 m wide and 7.6 km long and adjacent blocks covers more than 100m length in east-west direction. Our team is determined to take part in this competition in order to extend our knowledge of urban design. My idea to transform the once congested expressway into a long street park was chosen for our proposal. The proposal would benefit for the city's education by becoming EDUCATIONAL CORE, and also to integrate the divided blocks in the site. With the project, we learned how to design such large area and deal with an expected future. I was in charge of story making and computer works such as CAD drawing, 3D modeling, diagrams and perspective images. This project is also good to enhance my software skills since this is my first time to work with well-trained students.

COMPETITION

GROWNG CHERRY BLOSSOM IN SHIBUYA DESIGN ARTWORK COMPETITION IN REDEVELOPMENT DISTRICT OF SHIBUYA 2014 The competition organized by Sakuragaoka Design Management Forum desired to gather creative ideas to animate the district as an artistic area where designers, musicians and artists can show their performance and always filled with creativity. The site is now under huge reconstruction planning to rebuilt 240,000 m2 of total floor area, and that provides them a big opportunity to make the whole city more attractive. I was so interested in the redevelopment project in Shibuya because I acted as a representative of Groundscape Design Workshop 2015 which adopts the redeveloping area as the design site. For this reason I decide to work on this competition together with some friends. Our concept is that daily small activities generate big landscape which incentivizes various artists who visit the site. We just designed unique pavement and a sakura-shaped Post-it. By doing so, we tried to design a contrivance to affect the way people use and experience the space, rather than a detialed space design. My team mates agreed with my idea and we had fostered it until we submited our work. I worked on concept making, 3D modeling and a perspective image. We made a discussion over and over again to produce an unconventional design proposal.

1. SMALL Acts Make BIGG Landscape

2. Space Design in Massive Redevelopment

DESIGN CONCEPT

Redevelopment Building

Redeveloping Shibuya -- The site is located within the redeveloping area. The redevelopment project plans to reconstruct three blocks including six multistory buildings until 2027 to revitalize Shibuya's economy.

Cherry Blossom CURTAIN

Design of the three-dimensional shape -- What we can design is the acute-angled triangular space and the building facade which is adjacent to the space.

SAKURA Post-it Filling the Facade

Design Concept -- The design of the space is drawn from the name of the district, 'Sakura ga oka' which means a Cherry Blossom Hill. Our design is to make the space glutted with cherry blossoms. The pavement inscribed many patterns of cherry blossom blooms by water and the facade is filled with a vast number of Post-its shaped like a cherry blossom. In this way, small acts could create magnificent landscape.
