One Act Play: Amadeus Sam Recendiz staff writer

On March third the theater department performed their oneact play at the Mickey Melton Auditorium. The one-act play, Amadeus, was presented to upperclassmen english classes. Amadeus is set in the 1781- 1791 time period play with recalls of 1843 restoration setting in Austria. It is about Salieri, a famous music composer, who tries to sabotage Mozart, a new composer, because he sees that Mozart has true talent and is better than he is. The students performing were: senior Nathan Williams as Salieri, junior Ysidro Montana as Mozart, junior Abby Jester as the Constanze and junior Alex Lamers as the Emperor. “The UIL cast did a great job of portraying

how the composer, Salieri, plots the tragic downfall of Mozart.” said english teacher Theresa Mills. “My English classes really enjoyed experiencing the live theatre presentation of Amadeus.” The one-act play went to Texarkana for University Interscholastic League (UIL) on March 14-15. In a UIL one-act play contest, the play must be 18-40 minutes long, The Amadeus play is 40 minutes long and was directed by Pamela Mercer-McWilliams. “The play was well acted, well performed. It was brilliant.” Said english teacher Kay Weatherspoon. “I look at the play overall and they did good. It was an amazing play and I think they should have advanced further than what they did.”

Social media - convenient but calamitous. We have become too concerned about our friends on our phones that we tend to ignore our friends in real life. Social media can be a fun way to share moments from your life, and to keep in touch/reconnect with old friends. However, the way we are using these apps, we are limiting our opportunities to make new memories and make new friends. Many people use social media apps to take the place of real people. In addition to wasting a colossal amount of time, these apps are home to cyberbullying. With the option of anonymity, consequences fly out of the window, and users find themselves able to say whatever they want without retribution. Maybe social media isn’t the problem, and it’s people using it to bully others in safety that’s the problem. However, even if this is the case, what’s the difference? If we accept theappcompany.com that there is something wrong with the way social media is being used, but do nothing to correct it, what are we really accomplishing? It doesn’t matter who we blame it - the app or the individual user, the problems are still relevant. I’m not expecting a boycott of all social media, but I do hope that we can all make it a goal to spend a little less time on our phone, and to build people up rather than tearing them down.

Today’s generation is entirely too consumed with social media, and apps in general. However, when you stop and think about it, where would we be without them? Social media apps are one of the best ways to stay entertained nowadays. Everywhere you look, someone is tweeting, snapchatting, posting pictures on Instagram, etc. Now, these apps have proven harmful because people tend to get aggressive, “calling out” and “throwing shade” and saying mean things about people that the public has access to, but I think people are just immature and sensitive. Social media apps are great. They’re a way for people to express themselves when they don’t have the courage to tell anyone else. Most accounts on these apps can be made anonymous, so things can be let off chests without actually having to confess to peers. Being able to do this truly relieves pressure and makes lives easier. Many may feel that these apps just crush people, but I have two things to say about that. Firstly, what happened to “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”? Just because someone says something doesn’t mean you have to believe it. Self-confidence is key. And secondly, it’s not the apps that are the problem. It’s the people using them wrong.

Students discuss what it’s like to balance work and school

Lame Prom Themes Quick Victoria Weaver entertainment editor disclaimer before I go ham on this rant, anything I say isn’t personal, just my opinion and my distaste for anything cliche. That being said, if you’re overly sensitive or on the prom committee I just wouldn’t read this. Prom themes. I can name ten off the top of my head that I’ve seen depicted in movies, the ones that have become the staple, go-to prom themes for many, many schools. Thankfully, our school has yet to fall victim to this trend. While I’m not totally in love with our theme for the 2016 prom, it’s certainly not as bad as other cliches that I scoured the internet for. After reading these concepts, looking at horrendous and tacky decorations for HOURS I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s no in between when it comes to prom themes. They’re either really good, or just flat out dreadful. For instance, Under the Sea, and this is coming from someone who’d rather live in the ocean than on land, SO OVERDONE. I’ve seen it in every teeny bopper, romantic comedy movie. What’s worse is that the color scheme for this theme is practically impossible to change. All blues, greens and tropical colors. If I wanted to have my prom on the beach, I would’ve driven down to Galveston and gotten sand in my heels for a more authentic experience. Thanks. This is just one of the many themes I wish would just die already. Casino Nights is another one that bothers me. Hey, you 16 - 18 year old, wanna have the highly cliche and completely unrealistic Las Vegas experience?! Have you ever been to Vegas? It’s not all glitz and glam and casinos, my friend. It’s a minefield of predators, gambler addicts, and elderly people who just want to play slots. I don’t want that in my life, and I really don’t want that at my prom. Please stop. The purpose of this rant, a rant that’s been a long time coming honestly, is to let the future members of the prom committee know that overused prom themes are a thing, and they’re killing people’s vibes. Don’t be that committee. Save your school and their prom experience. Don’t use cliche prom themes.

“At first it was really difficult. Sometimes I don’t get off work till 11:00 and I would have to come home and finish homework that I didn’t do in class, which threw off my sleeping schedule. But now that I’ve had my job for a while, I was able to manage my time.” -Lauren Benjamin, 11

DIsorder in the Court

Yosef Ibitayo staff writer

On the weekend of February 12, Justice Antonin Scalia died at Cibolo Creek Ranch in Shafter, Texas, from natural causes. Scalia’s death left the Supreme Court of the United States, or SCOTUS, with four liberal-leaning Justices (Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan), three conservatives (Roberts, Thomas, and Alito), and Justice Kennedy, who is often a swing vote between the conservatives and liberals; it also ignited an intense debate in the Democratic and Republican Parties as to who President Obama should appoint as Scalia’s replacement. Who cares, you may say. It won’t affect me anyways. I beg to differ. If Judge Merrick Garland, Obama’s nomination for Scalia’s former seat, sides more often with the Democrat side of the SCOTUS, the United States will be divided even further and faster than before. The SCOTUS upholds the laws of this nation, and with a treacherous balance in place for the moment, it seems as though we are all holding our breath. If it tips towards conservative, sure, some people may be upset, but no big deal, since balance would be restored. But the liberal side may

become a grave problem. Why? Because time and again, the liberal side of politics has shown itself to be untrustworthy, secretive, and powerhungry. In 2014, the United States House Select Committee on Benghazi was formed in response to the September 11, 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Then-Speaker of the House John Boehner accused the Obama Administration of hiding its involvement in the incident, a charge brought about in April 2014 after the organization “Judicial Watch” released emails from within the Administration that were withheld from the House during its investigation. In the same year, the House voted to sue Obama for overstepping the powers of the presidency with his implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Got it yet? Despite all hopes and attempts to convince the people otherwise, the Democratic Party internally is like a parasite: it wants its way only, and screw any alternatives. The Republican Party is holding on to the Senate and the House by its fingertips, and with the authority of a Democratic SCOTUS to pass laws, the country will stagnate and become more unstable.

SENIOR Senior celebration is an annual event, where seniors have the option to dress up and walk across the Mickey Melton stage while their high school achievements are being announced to the crowd. This year’s senior celebration consisted of the normal walk across stage, and the announcement of senior class favorites in the gym. “Senior celebration was a weird and interesting experience,” senior Gaylen Lyons said. “It was fun to hang out with all my friends at the after party and to win class favorites.” In short, senior celebration is a time for the senior class to come together and celebrate for one of the last times before they begin the next chapter in their lives.

Winning Argument Seniors Made Top 8 at State Debate Meet An achingly long event in which people argue about the problems of our world; from infrastructure to ocean policy, attempting to figure out ways to solve them. It sounds like something you’d see on TV around this time in our country, where politicians defend their own plan, right? Well, this is what our Longview High School Debate team participated in at the UIL CX Debate State meet in Austin, Texas on March 18th. “As the future innovators and leaders of tomorrow,” debate team member Trevor O’ Connor said, “we must be able to convey our ideas in a professional and calm setting while advocating for what we think would be the best option.” The debate program allows for students to discuss issues that are pertinent to today’s society. “What like most about speech and debate is the fact that i get to learn more in depth about things that we don’t cover in the classroom.” Seems Brimmer said. This year, the state debate topic is the controversial subject of government domestic surveillance. The topic includes a discussion of the significance of technology in our daily lives. “We must continue to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of technology and continue discussion about what role it should

April Fools!

play.” O’ Connor said. Cross-Examination,CX, debate chooses a general topic to span over through each year to discuss and debate over through different affirmative cases. “Debate rounds are an hour and a half each, and debate tournaments can span a weekend of non-stop speaking.” O’Connor said. Two debate team participants from LHS qualified for state, Trevor O’Connor and Seema Brimmer, seniors. “They both have gone the past few years to the state meet, and they were a strong team.. Despite other strong teams at the meet, they did great overall.” Ms. Smith, sponsor of the debate team, said. The pair landed in the top eight of the whole state at the meet. “Finishing off as one of the top eight in state is something to be proud of,” O’Connor said, “I’m really glad with how well it went.” CX debate requires a lot of detailed research and professional speech, but allows for a learning experience in the mix of it all. “I have gained invaluable skills as far as critical thinking and articulating my arguments in a way that could be understood by others.” STATE CHAMPS: Seema Brimmer and Trevor They work well together, and they work O’Connor pose after making top 8. hard together. San Serriffe 1977: The British newspaper The Guardian published a seven-page “special report” about a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean that made up the country of “San Serriffe”. Readers of the newspaper, wanting to know more about the country with such a punctuated-sounding name, flooded the landlines with questions. Unfortunately, no one seemed to realize the date of publication.

the reaping of these “spaghetti trees” in action, as harvesters pulled strands of spaghetti off of trees and placed them into baskets. As with “San Serriffe”, the BBC was flooded with calls from people wanting to know how to grow these marvelous new “crops”, even after the prank was revealed. The broadcasters eventually got tired of all the calls and simply responded with instructions to “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.”

Spaghetti Trees 1957: The BBC news show Panorama aired a three-minute segment on the resurgence of “spaghetti trees” in Switzerland after “the virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil” and a mild winter season. Viewers were able to see

Taco Liberty Bell 1996: Finally, something close to home. Taco Bell purchased six full-page ads in major newspapers announcing the company’s purchase of the Liberty Bell, claiming that they bought the patriotic icon “to reduce the country’s F I N D O U T M O R E AT O U R W E B S I T E a t www.lobonow.com

debt” and, in a separate release, that “Taco Bell’s heritage and imagery have revolved around the symbolism of the bell. Now we’ve got the crown jewel of bells.” Americans around the country revolted in rage, calling both Taco Bell’s headquarters and the National Park Services to complain against the sale. Taco Bell revealed the ad was a prank a few hours later. On a related sidenote: when the White House was asked about the prank, Secretary of Press Mike McCurry “revealed” that the Lincoln Memorial would also be sold to Ford Motor Co., and would be renamed the “Ford Lincoln-Mercury Memorial”. I hope that this article was informative, and remember: the tomfoolery ends after duodecim post-meridies.

Longview hooked onto new cajun food joint Kyle McCain staff writer There is a new place to get your favorite fried greasy cuisine, and that place is The Catch. The Catch is a new seafood establishment, that took the place of Rusty Taco on Fourth St, they offer oysters, catfish, gumbo, shrimp, grits, and many types of tasty sides. With an array of friendly employees, The Catch tries, and succeeds, at giving out good vibes for an enjoyment while munching on your favorite foods from the deep blue sea. You have the option to sit inside with the cool air conditioning, or to stay outside and enjoy your food alongside your family and friends with mother nature. Another plus from picking this place while on an empty stomach, is the pricing, while other seafood places around Longview, like Red Lobster for instance, are two whole different ball games, Red Lobster having some entrees highly overpriced, where you can get a cheaper more genuine meal down the road at The Catch. March Madness

March is here. One of the most exciting events in American sports, the NCAA Tournament, has finally arrived. The NCAA’s 64-team College Basketball megatournament, “March Madness,” will kick-off March 19. It is sure to generate Nikolas Olson unforgettable drama, illegal gambling, close to a billion dollars in revenue, and some angry unpaid players.Unlike the bowl-game system Guest Writer of football, March Madness uses single-elimination to determine the winner of all the games. Fans from across the nation wait in anticipation to see if their team makes it through the rounds: the First Four, the Second Round (“the Round of 64”), the Third Round (“the Round of 32” or “the Regional Quarterfinals”), the Regional Semifinals (the Sweet Sixteen), the Regional Finals (the Elite Eight), the National Semifinals (the Final Four) and the championship round. March Madness lives up to its name when it comes to celebrating and prizes. The winning team earns a giant trophy, banners for each round they advance through, rings, shirts, hats and bragging rights. While some follow the tournament to watch athletes from across the country put on a show on the court, many more do so because of the money they have on the games. During the tournament, many major companies offer large amounts of money to people who can correctly predict the outcome of every game. For example, Warren Buffett offers one billion dollars to whoever can predict the perfect bracket. No one has ever done it before and unfortunately the odds are definitely not in your favor with a 1 in 9 quintillion chance in winning. In 2014, TV ad earnings alone eclipsed $1 billion. That same year, the NFL playoffs generated $976 million, while the NBA, MLB and NHL playoffs combined failed to out-earn March Madness, clocking a pitiful $991 million. Despite all the numbers that could be brought up, we can all agree on one thing: The March Madness tournament is worth a bunch of money. But while the NCAA makes it rain in the club, its players aren’t exactly partaking in the festivities. For a tournament dedicated to amateurism, there’s lots of money involved, as long as you aren’t a player. Zero dollars. That’s how much money NCAA men’s basketball players will earn in the next few weeks. During March Madness, college athletes make millions of dollars for the NCAA and universities. But they see none of it. The money, instead, goes toward paying their coaches’ salaries and other aspects of their schools’ athletic programs. The two teams who will face off in the national championship will play 6 games in a span of less than 3 weeks, and will get no monetary reward from their efforts. Even though the essence of collegiate sports is that college athletes are students first, the NCAA will not be around for much longer if they don’t start paying their athletes. We cannot ignore the fact the NCAA will be making over a billion dollars in revenue while the athletes get nothing. There has been plenty of talk over this issue, but the National College Players Association and the NCAA board need to reconsider whether athletes should receive monetary pay.

Fuller House

Late nineties sitcom “Full House” reboot on Netflix disappoints greatly

Victoria Weaver entertainment editor As a young pre teen looking for anything to watch that had cute boys or relatable qualities of my life in it, my favorite channel was naturally, ABC Family, and my favorite show was Full House. Not just because Uncle Jesse was the man of my dreams, but also because I wanted to be in that family so bad. Everyone did. The similarities to my own life were nice as well, a quirky, excessively cleaning parent, an annoying, but hilarious little sister and a large dog who was always in trouble. Yes, one could say I was obsessed with Full House. I’ve watched the entire show over and over more times than I can count, but I was fine with that. I was fine with watching the reruns, perfectly content with reliving the funniest and most heartfelt, cheesy moments with the Tanners. Part of their charm was that it was the late 80s - 90s, so the cheese was excusable for the most part. Like I said, COMPLETELY happy with the reruns. Unfortunately, that’s where my happiness ends. Rumors about a reboot for Full House have been circulating for years, and while I hadn’t watched the show in its entirety since I was about 13, I was genuinely excited. They were bringing back all the old actors, some new ones, and I was eager to see what the modernization of it would be like. However, my hopes and dreams came crashing down within the first ten minutes of this atrocity. The puns, the cheese that was so blatantly obvious it actually physically pained me, the careless editing. No. Just no. I hated every minute of this mind numbing mess, but being the devoted fan I am, I endured six hours of this abomination and prayed it would get better. Spoiler alert: it didn’t. If anything, it got worse. Let’s just start with these new kids on the scene. DJ’s sons, Jackson, Max and Tommy and her best friends daughter, Ramona. All child actors, so I won’t criticize much, however their characters are so flat and cliche at best. Not to mention they probably have the cheesiest lines, and the “lessons” we’re supposed to be learning from these kids are “stay in school” and “obey your mother”. Captivating, truly. If I was a parent I’d feel SO comforted knowing my children were learning such important lessons from this wholesome show. Not. Look, if you’re going to do cheesy and campy, you better at least give me a good and worthwhile lesson to go with it. You’re giving me the 2008 reboot of 90210 and I want Fresh Prince of Bel Air at its prime. Get it together. I am so beyond over these ABC Family reject shows, honestly. They’re just so bad and there’s no substance to them. It’s all manufactured and the comedic factor is basically nonexistent. If this is the future for Netflix shows then I want no part in it. You’ll find me in the indie film/television section, having an existential crisis over this new generation of popular entertainment.

There are 10

Things You Need To Know

This tale of founding fathers will have you looking at your ten dollar bill in a brand new way; you’ll see Hamilton’s ingenuity, his exhausting continuity, and as if that weren’t enough you’ll suddenly care about his polemical affair as if you were there.

Lin-Manuel, yeah I think he’s pretty swell. Armed only with his wit and extraordinary rhymes, he revolutionized the revolutionary war while keeping with the times. Hip-hop Hamilton is captivating millions, and my replay of the soundtrack is somewhere in the billions.

Number one only took about an hour to rhyme, but you better believe that’s nowhere close to the time Miranda spent on his legacy – six whole years, and there’s no doubt they were filled with his blood sweat

I’m sure that I’ve convinced you by now to listen to the soundtrack. I know you’ve summoned all the courage you require, but just in case you need a nudge here’s something to inspire – the world will never be the same, you’ll find all other music lame. You can think that it’s a blessing, you can think that it’s a curse, but eventually you’ll listen, for better or for worse. (Definitely for better though).

He wrote 46 songs, each one a treasure, 46 songs to peruse at your leisure. The soundtrack is guaranteed to make you laugh love and cry, so if you don’t want to seem emotional just pretend you have something in your eye.

There is no chance of falling asleep, this is a promise I know I can keep. The plot is so full of action, it has to be rapped just so it’s not five hours long, it’s a fraction of what it would be if it were full of usual songs.

Founding fathers spitting fire, how could it improve? Sending insults and throwing shade as if they had nothing to lose. Their savagery surprises, their wittiness bemuses, their arguments are none too small, discussing wars and rendezvouses.

There’s Alexander and Angelica, who will never be satisfied, and Eliza, who is happy being Alexander’s bride. There’s Washington his father figure, Jefferson his enemy, and last but not least, Aaron Burr, his deadly frenemy.

Lin-Manuel Miranda created a legacy, he is our modern hero and our scholar, don’t you see? He took a founding father, whom no one seemed to know, and put him in a musical, but little did he know just how much recognition this would bring to him and Hamilton. Or maybe he did know, I cannot really check, as I haven’t had the pleasure of a casual tetea-tete. All I know is Miranda completely changed the game, and the world now knows his name, and will never be the same.

Anyway, enough adulation of this living legend Lin, these accolades cannot convey how much I want all men and women to be blessed with the rhymes that lie therein. So stop whatever you’re doing, go and have some fun, download and listen to the life of Hamilton.
