WELCOME TO KBPS! Hello and welcome to the tenth edition of KBPS!
This Month’s Must Listen
It has certainly been a busy month pulling together this tenth edition of KBPS. As we finally reach double figures I’ve been interviewing a whole range of acts, band and singers not only for this edition but also for the blog so you can go online and read even more content.
I’ve also been expanding our reach into other areas, including creating Spotify playlists to go alongside our YouTube ones so you can enjoy our pick of the best songs this month whilst you’re relaxing at home, on the bus or stoking up the barbecue - if we get any decent weather! In this packed edition we take a look at some of the new songs that have been released this year to coincide with the Euro 2016 competition which has kicked off now, alongside some of our favourite “classics” and I also bring you my favourite new songs of the month. Alongside those there are ten interviews with some of the most exciting new, emerging and up and coming artists around and I hope you enjoy their interviews and their music as much as I have.
Finally there’s also the big discography at the back listing all my favourite songs from the past twelve months in a month-by-month listing, and in the next edition I’ll be giving you my definitive (possibly!) top fifty songs of the year so far. You can also see highlights of our news stories as well on the next few pages. I hope you enjoy this latest edition. Please, if you like what you read, like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our blog. We’re here to help promote exciting and new music that you may not necessarily hear on the big and commercial radio stations. There are lots of artists within these pages who deserve to be heard and I hope you discover something new that you like. Until next month, have a great time! Philip Lickley Editor, KBPS

As we all know from big hits such as the Lightning Seed’s Three Lions, football competitions like the World Cup and the Euros are not just about the football, it’s about the music that goes with it, and Euro 2016 is no different, so here is KBPS’ look at the new football songs appearing in 2016 and some of our favourites from previous competitions. David Guetta feat. Zara Larsson This One’s For You
France’s most famous musical export since Daft Punk teams up with Sweden’s Zara Larsson for the officlal Euro 2016 anthem. “We stand strong together / we’re in this forever” Larsson sings over a stirring midtempo club beat before a range of DJ effects take over for the chorus. It’s a decent enough song in the verses but a chorus consisting of dubstep is hardly going to be chanted by the football crowds. Though it does at least bridge the language barrier. Verdict: Could try harder.
IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE... PLAY ON As the latest European football competition kicks off, we take a look at the new music this year and some classic hits...
KBPS
Manic Street Preachers - Together Stronger (C’mon Wales) Here is Wales’ official anthem, naturally using one of the country’s biggest bands. Shamelessly and quite obviously riffing off Andy Williams’ ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ it at least ticks the boxes of the familiar football song: extracts from commentary? Check. Name-checking footballers? Check. Sing-able chorus? Check. It’s actually a pretty good track and the clap-heavy breakdown is fun but it does rely heavily on the sample and is it just me that feels it’s a little bit weird for Manic Street Preachers to sell-out like this? Verdict: Not Bale-rilliant, but good enough!

Super Furry Animals - Bing Bong Likely to bring fans of Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ into a cold sweat of psychological proportions, this simple, repetitive, vocoder-heavy number if quite likely the surrealist thing you’ll hear this year that’s football related. Except outside of the video it’s not really football-related. Catchy in its craziness, it’s not bad but you’d end up getting sectioned if you standing chanting this from the stands. Verdict: Not so super, furry animals. Andreas Klemmstein - EM Song So unusual I’m not even sure of the actual title, this German song is naturally heavy on the electronic style with rap-like lyrics and mentions of the X Factor. It’s weird, wacky but surprisingly catchy, but again not exactly shouting out football. Verdict: Nein. Chris Phillips - Let The Good Times Roll There must be something in the Welsh water as here is another song from the land of the dragons. A surprisingly well produced indie song with a video that doesn’t look like it was filmed in someone’s bedroom on a cheap camcorder for once, it again ticks the lyrical boxes of a football song but it doesn’t really ever get into a feeling anywhere near stirring. For a song called ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ it doesn’t feel that happy but it’s nice enough. Verdict: Going to penalties. Skip The Use - I Was Made For Lovin’ You (My Team) Somewhere members of KISS are contacting their lawyers to see if it’s worth a lawsuit over this, er, interesting
KBPS
parody. Featuring a particularly unusual pronunciation of the words ‘My Team’ this is actually not too bad and they’ve certainly picked a catchy song to cover, it’s Chic-sounding backing feeling quite contemporary. Verdict: I Was Made For Lovin’ You Martin? Who’s Martin? DJ Kenno - Will Grigg’s On Fire Sampling ‘Freed From Desire’ by Gala this is actually surprisingly good, taking the appeal of the original song and twisting the lyrics. Nice. Izzy Bizu & the BBC Concert Orchestra La Foule The official song for the BBC’s coverage, apparently Izzy Bizu, lacking in particular French skills, sang it phonetically. It’s an intriguing song musically, mixing in your expected French accordion sounds with a Caribbean style and a touch of James Bond. I can certainly see it accompanying television coverage but not entirely sure a stand-full of slightly tipsy football fans would be able to navigate the Francais. Verdict: Bon. Four Lions - We Are England Made up of members of Black Grape, this is certainly no Three Lions plus. It’s got a nice tongue-in-cheek feel to it but let’s face it, anything associated with Shaun Ryder is hardly going to be strong musically. Verdict: Lion down on the job.

The Barry Horns: This is Wales
The Lightning Seeds - Three Lions
Yes, it’s Wales again. This song is a cross between some electrofunk record and a tourist’s map of Wales read out by Siri. That said it’s surprisingly toe-tapping if hardly stadium fodder. Verdict: This is OK.
Pretty much the definitive football song that still casts a shadow over all footie songs that followed this matches the lack of expectation from England fans for their national team. Verdict; Football’s coming home (to your mp3 player)
Seo Linn - The Irish Roar It’s back to Ireland a more Enigma-style opening gives way to a more indie-Irish style mixing French references with commentary samples. After the Manic Street Preachers this is probably actually the best song of the year. Verdict: Roar! The Best of the Past
Of course we can look backwards to pick some of our favourite football songs from years gone by! Fat Les - Vindaloo
Sometimes the unofficial ones are the best, and who can deny that this isn’t one of the catchiest football tunes around. We’re going to score one more than you! Verdict: Me and my mum and my dad and my gran love it! Ant and Dec - On The Ball OK, this song by the artists formerly known as PJ and Duncan is hardly the height of sophistication and at times they’re a little flat, but it’s certainly catchy and singable, and the video is pretty funny. Verdict: They’re just about on the ball
KBPS
Embrace - World At Your Feet Definitely one of the better entries in the history of football songs, this indie-pop hit has the catchy chorus needed without descending into cheesiness. Verdict: We definitely should Embrace this. Other Contenders Gary Barlow - Greatest Day Shameless, tuneless take on the Take That classic Pitbull - We Are One (Ole Ola) Uptempo hit from two years ago Shakira feat. Carlinhos Brown - La La La Even Shakira isn’t afraid to change her lyrics for football. Vengaboys - 2 Brazil! Catchy remake of an older song, just remember the video is NSFW Alternative England - Hopes of A Thousand Men This Tenpole Tudor sample really works, just a shame it’s connected with Chubby Brown. Marcus Day feat. Cormack - Bangers and Mash A catchy independent release.

ALMOST HORIZONTAL We speak to former The Dunwells guitarist about his new album, tour and plans for the future!
Dave Hanson is a London-based musician and guitarist of The Dunwells who toured all over the world with that band, supporting artists such as Mumford and Sons and Sheryl Crow. Now Dave has just released his solo album ‘Almost Horizontal’, influenced by his times performing across the world. Currently mid-way through an acoustic tour of coffee shops to promote the album in conjunction with Caffè Nero, I joined Dave in the Bradford branch to speak to him about his album, tour and the state of music in 2016 as we tucked into a fresh coffee and the most elaborate hot chocolate I could possibly have ordered. As he prepared for the sixth day of the tour in Leeds, Dave was positive about his experiences so far. “We’ve been all over the place. We were in Heathrow Airport for three days which was an interesting experience – being in an airport and going nowhere! “And we’ve been to Scotland and to Newcastle and then we’ve got a few dates in the North of England and then we head south at the weekend.”
The tour came about through Caffè Nero’s support of live music, Dave Hanson being the current Artist of the Month which sees specially selected musicians performing live in their shops and also having their music played over the PA every day at 3:30pm over the month nationwide. “Caffè Nero are very supportive of live music,” Dave told us. “My relationship with them goes back to the time when I was with Dunwells. We did a Caffè Nero tour quite a long time ago and we really cut our teeth on the road, just getting in front of people who maybe hadn’t heard of us.
KBPS
“When it came to release this new record it made sense to try and extend that relationship and they’ve been very supportive online.”
Dave Hanson was complimentary of the audiences seeing his show, a mixture of people already in the coffee shop and those specifically coming to see him perform. “[The sessions] are going down well. You’ve got to be careful as you’re encroaching on people’s coffee times so you don’t want to be coming on and playing a full rock show, so we’ve been keeping it a little bit more laid back. I’ve had my drummer come with me and play a little cajón on some of the dates, and my backing vocalist Becca will be out on a couple of the dates as well, mixing it up a little.”
Dave has also been embracing the latest social media on the tour, broadcasting some of the sets like his Tuesday one in Newcastle via Facebook video, bringing his performances to a bigger audience. “We’ve been getting a lot of people tuning in as they’re teatime shows [when] people are coming in from work.”
Fans from across the world including the USA and Poland have been tuning in to the sessions, and listeners have been interacting, selecting songs for Dave to play at particular sessions, which saw him at Newcastle covering Amy Winehouse’s ‘Valerie’, with a song by the Black Keys next on Dave’s wishlist. “I’m trying to mix and match modern songs with a bit of old stuff. It’s about keeping the fans interacting and engaged with what we’re doing. It seems to work!” “Any musician who doesn’t utilise the tools of social media is a fool. At the end of
The music magazine

the day it’s a great way of reaching out to people and letting them know what you do, and speaking directly with people”, Dave told me, chatting about how messaging with fans increases around these sessions and helps him chat with listeners. The Caffè Nero dates are timed to coincide with the launch of his new album ‘Almost Horizontal’, a record Dave describes as ‘eclectic’.
“When we were producing it we tried to make it like we would a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack. We tried to take different moods. I’m an artist, I paint, so I’m thinking of different colours for painting, a little bit of light and shade. “There are songs that are a little bit more upbeat, some bits that are more chilled out. There’s a bit of reggae influence in there. It’s got the same vibe running through it, but there are different colours and textures.
“I’d say the mantra when we were recording was cool and groovy. Everything has got to have a groove.”
Dave continued on to talk about the production of the record, and how drummer Dan Woodward helped lay down the grooves without a click-track, and it was all done using an old-school tape machine. “It was produced in an old fashioned sense, the way old records were done. But then we got Tim Palmer involved to mix it, and make it sound more modern.” ‘Almost Horizontal’ the album has a great range of tracks on it, its name taken from a friend’s comment to Dave that he was so relaxed he was almost horizontal, a title that fits the chilled-out, laid-back feel
KBPS
to the album. Here at KBPS our personal favourites including ‘Midday Sun’ and ‘Blind Faith’ but we were interested to know about Dave’s favourites. He picked the blues-tinged ‘Devil’ with Becka Ward adding backing vocals to it as if she “were a mermaid” - “I tried to make it sound cinematic” – and ‘Por Favor Senor’, which took influence from Dave’s time in Texas. “It’s a bit of a joke song in a way. It is a true story in some senses, but not a true story about me. “I had a friend who was telling me about this experience he had with a number of ladies. He told me What could I do Dave, there was five of them. I couldn’t just leave them to themselves! which I thought was hilarious and that was the start of the story!”
This story makes up the second verse of the song with the first verse pulled entirely from the world of fiction. “I love the groove on [Por Favor Senor]. It’s got an early ZZ Top feel to it, and that was what I was going for.”
For an album recorded in the winter there is an undeniably warm and sunny vibe to the album. “Maybe the summer [feel] was a bit of wishful thinking!” Dave joked, talking about ‘Por Favor Senor’ and ‘Midday Sun’ being tracked in the same session, one of six four-hour sessions that saw the album being recorded. Looking back on Dave’s career we asked him how things had changed since being part of a band and now going solo. “I feel most comfortable in a band situation so I really enjoy playing the gigs when I’ve got the band with me. I’ve got a great line-up of musicians and the music really comes across.
The music magazine
10
“I love playing my own songs,” Dave told us, expressing his love for song-writing and also production. “Making the music is what I’m passionate about. I love creating new music as that’s what fires me up.” So where is it now for Dave? Coming up he’s got performances at the Cornbury and Saltaire festivals and other gigs lined-up, with lots more under his hat that he hopes to reveal soon. “When I made this record it was always my intention to get out to the States,” he teased, wrapping up our interview as we polished off our drinks.

Dave Hanson’s album ‘Almost Horizontal’ is available to buy now and you can still catch him at Caffè Nero’s across the country including Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and London ahead of further more traditional dates over the summer.

DO IT WELL, DO IT MORE OFTEN We chat to Dickon of London band Careless Sons about their new song, new EP and a video of terrible life decisions
Careless Sons are a three-piece indie rock-pop band from London and we spoke to Dickon Collinson of the band about their new single ‘Don’t Make Me Do This Again’, a song he describes as being about perseverance. “It’s about being in a relationship that neither want to leave nor be in and being in it out of convenience. “And I guess beyond that you can apply that to work, being in a band, that sort of thing.”
In terms of the song, the inspiration came to the band from a more personal level. “As a band we always had grand aspirations that we’d write protest songs that would change the world but we soon came to realise that we’re limited to our own personal experience. We also come from relatively privileged backgrounds, we all live in London so it would be disingenuous to write about physical or political hardship so I guess we defer to romantic or emotional hardship so that’s where it comes from.” Alongside the song there’s a great promotional video taken from a first person perspective, a format not often done in videos since Franz Ferdinand tackled it with their ‘Darts of Pleasure’ song.
“It was really good fun. We made that around where we live in Finsbury’s Park in Crouch End, North London. We shot it all like Peep Show. Basically we’re mimicking being Rob, our guitarist who is the main protagonist, and just went around London making decisions for him! “Rob basically has an absolute nightmare!” The video is inspired by the concept of
KBPS
terrible life decisions, but were any of those based on actual events?
“I don’t think Rob has ever been sick on a bunch of flowers! It’s more about portraying inevitability. You’ll see at the beginning it implies that Ben has gone through the same thing, hasn’t quite had as much of a nightmare but has still got run over by a car, even though his day has been perfectly normal! It’s all about fate!” The group formed having been involved with music in education. Since then Dickon has said it’s been a rollercoaster of a ride. “Anyone who is in a band will know it’s all very fraught and very tense and any creativity is filled with self-doubt and people along the way telling you you’re not good enough. “There’s been a lot of that but there have been some high points as well.”
Dickon was taught to play guitar by record company owner Richard Rose when he was at primary school aged seven and it’s now come full circle with Careless Sons’ new record released on Rose’s label. “He taught me to play the Clash, The Who, the Pistols, the Manics, and I got the bug from there. I’ve been in bands since then, then went to University and met Rob and Ben, and we realised we all liked the same thing and got into the band.” Influences such as the Clash have fed into the band’s guitar-driven sound. “There’s more of a Springsteen vibe to it, the Clash are a bit more aggressive, but there are influences.” Careless Sons also have an EP called ‘Heartbreak Major’ on Repeat Records
The music magazine
13
which came out at the end of May, and it’s available on 12’’ vinyl alongside the digital format. We asked Dickon about the release on vinyl.
“We love vinyl and think most music fans love [it too]. There’s a real appetite for it [today] and it’s a real antidote to modern living. It’s mobile, it’s physical, and you can listen to it and have a nice time, whereas when you’re downloading music and listening to it on the go you kind of feel a natural disconnect in my opinion.
EPs & LPs Reviewed Novanta - Hello We’re Not Enemies
“It’s something we wanted to do and something the label does – they’re big on vinyl!”
When we spoke to Dickon the band were preparing for a couple of live dates and rehearsals were going well, with further dates coming up in Cambridge in June and Manchester in August. But where is it now for the band?
“We just want to play in front of big crowds. This last year the number of people who’ve come to see us has dramatically increased and it’s been a great pleasure to play in front of people you don’t know, and we hope people enjoy our music. “Our ambition is do more, and do it more often!”

Coming in at just shy of thirty minutes, this seven track extended play is a mixture of soundscapes, some with added vocals, some without. It’s certainly a mixed bag from the short introduction track of ‘Sonder’ to the rockier ‘Gooafoss’ but as the disc concludes, especially on the lengthy ‘Blue Lagoon’, the individual tracks appear less distinct and don’t quite offer as much magic as you’d hope. Akureyri is a laid back, choral-influenced track which is probably my favourite on the piece. Interesting, well composed, but a little muddy, rambling and indistinct for my personal tastes. LIFE AND LOVE IN ENGLAND We speak to Ben McKelvey about his new single, album and keeping fit for music
Ben McKelvey is a singer-songwriter from London who has just released his new single ‘Morning I’m Gone’ taken from his debut album ‘Life & Love in England’. We caught up with him for an interview about his single and album, his plans for the future and how he likes to keep fit between recording sessions. First up was all about his single, which was the first he recorded for the album. “It went down well on the tour with Wet Wet Wet; it’s a catchy one to get the crowd going. I’m delighted that the way it’s come out!”
Taken from the album, which was produced by Jake Robins, Ben was really positive about the recording experience, a time which is being captured in an album documentary which is due to be released before the end of the month. “We set up a load of cameras, a couple of GoPros, in the studio and recorded as much as we could.”
The album features a mixture of styles, with one song recorded as live, and other techniques to keep it fresh. Ben also plays all the instruments on the record, including drums, going back to a time when he originally played as the drummer in a punk band. We were keen to know how it was like to go solo. “I do not miss carrying the drums to gigs!” he confessed. “That was a good bonus point. Being a drummer you’re quite limited in the song writing process. Writing in the songs is my favourite part of music. “The transition was quite natural as I enjoyed writing music, I just had to get better at guitar. So when the band disbanded I just taught myself a few chords and it was away from there! “I like doing everything myself as I know exactly how I want it. It’s more work but there’s a greater reward in the long run.”
KBPS
Ben has also recently been touring with his band The Firebrands and recently supported Wet Wet Wet on their big arena tour. Ben told us about how it came about, receiving the phone call to join them when he was in a guitar shop. “I was buying myself a new guitar and I got a phone call asking if I’d like to play pretty much every arena in the UK supporting Wet Wet Wet and I was like definitely!. It was a career changing moment.
“We’ve done some really cool stuff before [like] playing in the States and great venues but nothing on the scale like that. It was just the professionalism of the crew, and everyone involved with a project that big were just so inspiring and great to work with.
“The boys and their management were so welcoming; they watched our show from the side of the stage. They were just brilliant and we had the time of our lives!” Ben and his band tweak their live performance depending on the audience. For the Wet Wet Wet tour they did a full band set-up but semi-acoustic in style. “We try and fit it in with who we’re supporting, so if we’re with a heavier rock band then we might go electric guitar and drum kits, then for a poppier band we might strip it down a bit. “[Most of] my songs are written on an acoustic guitar so normally if the song works on an acoustic then we can do it [many ways]. It gives us a chance to work with different dynamics and makes every tour slightly different for us and the audience, so keeps things fresh.” Alongside being a musician, Ben also directed the promotional video for
The music magazine
16
song ‘Somewhere Else’, showcasing his involvement in other aspects of the music process. “I’m probably a bit of a control freak I guess! The whole thing is like a big art project for me, whether it’s writing the song, or recording the song, or making a video for the song, if I can do it on my own I will.
“The videos we do now are run through my label and my producer helps me direct and we co-direct things together. I love being part of every bit of the creative process as I just enjoy it so much.”
When Ben is not in the studio he likes to keep fit, and is working on a website to showcase his training videos alongside his music. A typical day for Ben is getting up at 5am to train with a variety of exercises in his plan, plus evening sessions as well. “I find it really
KBPS
helps anchor my day and gives me a lot of energy to do everything I need to be doing.” I quizzed Ben about his choice of music whilst training. Sometimes it’s his own music but often his playlist consists of upbeat music from Foo Fighters and Kasabian. But what are Ben’s future plans for his music? “I’m in the process of moving to Brighton. I’m actually in a position now where I can do music full time which is fantastic. It’s a great city for music and full of bars!
“I’m also going for album number two in the summer and hopefully another couple of support tours, so I’ll definitely be out of the road again soon!”

CURRENT MUSIC We speak to Paul of Dead Love Fear Wave about their new single ‘Don’t Exist’.
Paul Eaton and Jim Spencer make up ‘Dead Love Fear Wave’, an experimental duo from Manchester. As they release their debut single ‘Don’t Exist’ we spoke to Paul about the experimental indie-electronic track, inspired by the music Paul listens to. “I’ve always been into guitar music mainly; indie-rock, alternative, sort of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, but I’ve always liked electronic music. This is my first foray into making it but I have always had a good appreciation for electronic music.”
Producer Jim Spencer has worked with previous projects of Paul’s but this time it was a little different. “We’d never done something as collaborative as this. Jim had moved into new studios which was full of vintage equipment and interesting gear so it was about trying out new sounds and experimenting so we weren’t going into the studio with a complete track and laying it down, it was more just doing it piece-bypiece, building it up as we went.” Paul uses a sketchbook to capture his ideas for future reference to help compose new material. “My iPhone is [also] full of things I’ve recorded. For a project like this, it’s where it all came from, pulling bits of ideas together. Instead of sitting down with the idea of writing a traditional song – verse, bridge, chorus – it’s more about an atmosphere.”
A video for the single will be launching by the end of the week, the visual side being important to Paul as well, keeping though within their budget. “This track in particular has got quite a narrative behind it so we wanted to get that across in the video. It’s cool what we’ve done.”
As well as recording his own songs, Paul also composes songs for other people. “I just like writing,” he told us. “I like hearing what
KBPS
other people do with something I’ve written. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing. I’ve never really struggled writing, and I do like writing in different styles, not gutting stuck to one thing. I like to try different things; keep it interesting!” Paul confesses that this allows him to keep fresh as a musician, and not be pigeonholed, something which has happened in the past. “Jim has produced all sorts of different people, but never really had the creative freedom to work on a project like this where there’s no limit on what we could do with it.” Following the single will be an album out this summer, an album which is already well underway. “After that we’ll see; we’ve got a lot of material and there’ll be another single following this up.”
Looking ahead Paul is exploring about how they take Dead Love Fear Wave into a live environment. “It’s a complex studio arrangement [but] we’ve got some really good musicians who are joining us to bring it live and we’re exciting about that, but again it’s not something we planned at the start of the project.
“We’re playing at the Alternative Escape in Brighton [soon] so that’ll be our live performance but then we’ll be taking on more shows later in the year which will be cool!”

OH YES We speak to Elly Oh about her new single ‘Real Men Cry’
Elly Oh is a singer from Sydney who sings in a range of styles from opera to pop, jazz to rock and has released her new single ‘Real Men Cry’ and we spoke to her as she landed in London from her home country to promote her single, and she was excited about being able to bring her music to new people. I began by asking her about a Facebook post where she said she was using the Harry Potter films as a way of adjusting to the British accent. “It’s actually helping quite a lot!”
Returning to her music, Elly Oh’s song was inspired by her father. “When I was little my dad never cried and he was always strong and brave, but as he’s getting older I realised one day that I could see my dad crying as I was leaving South Korea so I wrote the song for him.” There’s also a video for the single where Elly plays a counsellor, helping the lead male who can’t cry as he fears doing so wouldn’t make him a real man. “It’s a bit of a different story from when I was writing the song. But it was fun!”
Two years ago Elly Oh was a finalist on their version of the Voice. “It was a great experience! I didn’t have much confidence and I was about to give up my singing career, but through the show they made me feel like I can sing and become a singer! I might even try the Voice UK too!” When she was eighteen Elly Oh studied opera, which has helped shape her a musician. “I really love opera but I decided I wanted to do other things which is why I became a pop singer, but in the future I’d
KBPS

OH BROTHER GLENN MELING ON HIS NEW SINGLE AND ALBUM, NORWEGIAN IMMIGRATION AND HIS LOVE OF THE MOVIE FARGO.
Musician Glenn Meling has just launched his new single ‘Brother Jonathan’ and we caught up with him to find out more about the new pop single, which he describes as also having gospel influences.
“Brother Jonathan is an expression from America before the more famous term of Uncle Sam; it’s about what America used to represent when the nation was new. “I got interested in European emigration in the 19th century to America. It’s a continuing thing, migration, and America is a nation of immigrants, and this was the first song I wrote on this theme and I’ve got a whole album that covers this topic!” I asked Meling if it has any reflection on contemporary issues. “I think there are parallels. Migration always starts with a need to get to a new place, to get a new beginning. Europeans were poor and wanted a new chance and the only country at the time that could provide this new beginning was America. “When people look to Europe today they can see somewhere where they can start again financially.”
The gospel tinge for the single came about by chance. “I didn’t plan it. I started out writing this song as an experiment, experimenting with beats and drum machines, and just laid down a few chords, and eventually you have to come up with a chorus. “I tried something different and later on decided to make the chorus bigger, and decided it would be a great to have bigger choral sound.”
Meling takes an active role in his production. “It’s been something I’ve been working on for the last five years. I’ve learnt a lot by being

very critical and making the right decisions, and that’s a big part of production. There are thousands of different ways to go and you have to make decisions, and it was very good to collaborate with people, but in the end someone has got to make a decision!” Glenn Meling’s album, from which the single is taken, is called ‘Minnesota’, a recording process that has taken a while to complete. “That’s because of financial reasons, and I’ve changed recording studios on the way, and I’ve made my own portable studio. That’s why it’s taken so long!
“But the learning experience has been great. I do all my recording here, and take my time. I’ll [also] go to London and record there and with people who are very experienced. I do things at home but can also check it with them. I take decisions, and I’m part of the production, and I’m very pleased with that!” Meling said he has his favourite producers and uses them as inspiration. “In art you emulate people you like and that’s how you improve. You start as a young kid playing the guitar and you’d try to play like whoever the guitar hero is at the time, and it’s the same here.
“In my case it would be producers and the artists I grew up with like Brian Eno, or my personal favourite is Daniel Lanois who has produced a lot of great albums, and he’s got a portable studio as well, and he’s done great albums with portable [kit].” Moving onto the album, Meling talked about the variety on the album. “It’s got a gospel thing, it’s got a funk son, a rock song. The whole concept is pop-rock but it’s quite varied from the comments I’ve had.” In terms of performing live Meling is just staring up, but being a solo musician it’s more difficult. “It’s not easy, but if I get the chance I’ll take it!”

EPs & LPs Reviewed BBC Radio 2s Sounds of the 80s, Vol 2
So where next for Glenn Meling? “I’d like to pursue this single and album, maybe even take it to America! What I talk about are the Norwegian immigration to America and in some states there are millions of NorwegianAmericans and it would be great to at least pitch it to them and see if they’re interested. “The reason I picked the album title Minnesota as that’s the big Norwegian state. There are certain states – Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin – but it’s Minnesota where you’ll find most Norwegians. “Fargo (the Coen Brothers are from Minnesota) is very influenced by the Scandinavian countries so if you watch that film, you might pick it up from the surnames and the music used. It’s a great film!”

The second volume of BBC Radio 2’s ‘Sounds of the 80s’ includes 36 live and mostly acoustic versions of eighties hits, including bizarrely Bruce Springsteen’s ‘I’m On Fire’ twice. Featuring a great range of artists from Tom Odell to the Manic Street Preachers, Mika to the Shires, there’s lots to enjoy here and most of the covers are pretty faithful to the originals, outside of a few more unusual takes such as Lemar’s version of ‘Once In A Lifetime’.
This compilation is undemanding and pretty ordinary in terms of the musical delivery with very few surprises in store, but included in its two disc package are some huge hits and big names covering them and it’s certainly a CD worth throwing on your hi-fi to sit back and chill for a couple of hours. Throw in a few production tricks and a heartfelt delivery and there’s much to love here. Straight Outta Calderdale We speak to Jack the Rapper about his brand new music
Jack the Rapper is an independent hip-hop artist from Halifax in West Yorkshire, just down the road from KBPS. We got a chance to speak to the exciting young musician about his music, which he describes as tongue-in-cheek hip-hop.
“I like to poke fun at myself and show off my ability to flip words and bend them and manipulate them to make them rhyme. I’m very much into the technical aspect of showing what I can do with words.
“I take influence from every single genre; I know a lot of people say that, but one of my songs might be heavily influenced by country music but then the next might be acoustic. I also do a lot of spoken word at the moment. “It’s very animated, over the top, eccentric music!”
Jack began experimenting with hip-hop at eleven but didn’t get to record until he was about sixteen. “I released my first project in 2013. That was when I was comfortable with releasing stuff. It’s been a long process of just making sure I was good enough before I put anything out.” Jack’s hometown of Halifax doesn’t have a particular hip-hop scene but has allowed him to get inspiration for his music. “The environment has always pushed me to do what I do; it gave me some drive to give the town a voice, give it a voice, and put it on the map. “I’m heavily influenced by Yorkshire. I don’t mask my accent. I don’t hide it at all! Some people might go for the London accent but I’m very passionate about my accent.”
Jack recently worked as part of a nationwide
KBPS
BBC-led event in Leeds, helping young people perform spoken word.
“There’s an untapped resource around here. I recently took part in the BBC Radio 1Xtra workshops that went on all around the country and in the big cities. That gave me an opportunity to meet other acts within Yorkshire, and that’s helped me tap into a network of acts in other cities like Manchester and Birmingham, all these places where you wouldn’t think there was much of a scene, but where people are trying to break out.” Halifax has been famous recently for the two series of Happy Valley set in the area. I asked Jack whether this has been good for the area.
“I love that show so much, and a lot of it is true, and there are areas where this sort of thing goes on, just like everywhere else. I spend my days in places [that they film]. It’s another thing that helps with representation. We are sort of a forgotten town and not too much goes on here, and I want to help with that, put a face to the city!” I asked whether he’d ever look to collaborate with Jake Bugg, who performs the title song for the show. “That’s like the town’s theme song at the moment! I don’t know if that offer’s on the table though!” One of Jack’s biggest singles recently is ‘Name Down’. I asked him about it to give a flavour of what inspired him.
“That’s what I call verbal flexing. When I think things are getting a bit stale I get an attitude and put it out in a song. I’ll be like this is what I can do then, watch what I can do with words. Whilst I was in that song it became about showing Halifax off, which

Being involved with production has helped Jack shape his own music too and he now produces all his own material. “You know what you want to create and portray, and what sound you want to associate with yourself, so for me it just seemed organic to do it for that. “It gives me the control to keep it a consistently in my sound.”
is why I did the video in [the town]. It was a pride thing, trying to show off what we around here and what we’ve got going on, and I love the Halifax scenery, and have a video that includes that.”
As well as being a musician Jack also does video work for other artists. ”I like to have my hands in different pots all the time. Growing up I didn’t have access to other musicians like myself so I’ve been teaching myself how to play instruments, how to produce my own music, and then when I’ve got into my twenties and meeting other artists from around West Yorkshire and around the country, and many of them might not necessarily make their own instrumentals. They’ll focus on the lyrics or the mixing, and I’m here thinking that I have an untapped resource, so I’ve been producing music and videos for other acts, and it’s all skills I’ve honed for myself but as I’ve got older figured there’s a side business here.
“It’s helped keep my head above water and I enjoy it as well! There’s always someone who needs some sort of music.”
KBPS
Alongside the single, Jack has also released a full album, going against the idea of artists drip feeding music in EPs. “If I get to twelve tracks, there’s no reason I can’t do a thirteenth or fourteenth track, so I just keep going and going. I don’t listen to anyone so it ended up getting to eighteen tracks, then once I’ve got this out I might focus on smaller things! “I’m going to do more collaborations now and smaller projects.”
There’s still plenty to keep Jack busy. He’s now working with a country singer from Liverpool on a new EP, a sound that he feels reflects elements of Halifax well, and also talking about upcoming shows with other local artists including rappers, beat-boxers and spoken word artists.
Looking ahead to the future Jack the Rapper is keen on doing more with festivals. “I did a couple last year [including] Tramlines in Sheffield, and my dream is Leeds Fest. I’d really love to play [there]. Hopefully to just generate enough to survive off this music. As you can imagine funding this is difficult – being able to live off this is a dream!”

EPs & LPs Reviewed Rude Audio - Rudest (EP)
The EP wraps up with ‘User’, a spookier, more ghostly affair, mixing up haunting musical lines with a more sombre styling, tying up a strong, electronic-focussed EP with plenty of ideas that weave well together to create a pleasing aural experience. TT facebook.com/rudeaudio/
Ladyhawke Wild Things
Out now, ‘Rudest’ is a four-track EP from electronic DJ Collective ‘Rude Audio’ who are made up of a group of DJs from 19 to 53. Opener ‘Crystal Pylon’ is a throbbing electronic start, its mix of dark, industrial sounds and ethereal vocal calls merging together into a delightfully varied and captivating soundscape.
‘Knockemdub’ fuses a subtle Caribbean rhythm into the track, its elements once more gently being introduced and weaved in into the magical sounding flow that includes snippets of speeches and other vocal effects into a calming, hypnotic exploration of what music can make you feel. ‘Half Moon Lane Glitter’, which flows seamlessly from the previous track to the last, is less distinctive in its style through a lack of more intriguing vocal hooks but is nevertheless a strong and involving composition with some Eurosian hints in its delivery.

Singer Pip Brown is back with her latest and third album. Having absolutely loved her self-titled debut but not been a huge fan of her follow-up ‘Anxiety’, I’m excited to report that her latest LP is, to roll out a cliché, a return to form, a thoroughly enjoyable eleven track pop classic with more hooks than a fishmongers and so catchy it should come with a health warning. ‘A Love Song’ is a typical example of what makes the LP a great listen, a bouncy, pop hit that screams for radio play, sounding like some of the best songs on her debut. some throbbing electronic moments and vocal trickery, its the central chorus that kicks off the album.
Continuing with ‘The River’ which begins with a great mix of drums and piano before switching up into another clutch of catchiness in the form of the bridge and chorus, with enough nonsense vocal calls to keep the most ardent Kaiser Chiefs fan happy.
The album’s title track comes next. ‘Wild Things’, the only song on the album to break past both the four- and five-minute barriers, begins gently with a surprisingly sombre sounding piano riff before morphing into a mid-tempo electronic ballad that, off-set against the buzzing introductions to the album, works really well, though Ladyhawke is always her best when things remain upbeat.
Track four ‘Let It Roll’ is my favourite song on the album, a foot-tapping fast-paced catchy pop song with a speedy verse and bridge that makes way for a huge and bouncy chorus, as Brown declares ‘too many lovers in a hotel room; they’re making plans to run away to the moon’ and launches a massive banger of a tune with plenty of tricks to keep things interesting. The album continues to deliver after this. ‘Chills’ mixes up plenty of hooks together for another fun electro-pop number whilst ‘Sweet Fascination’ offers a fun swagger to its mid-tempo styling. ‘Golden Girl’ continues to offer sunny pop enthusiasm, whilst ‘Hillside Avenue’ becomes one of the next big highlights of the album, the mid-tempo feel of the track combined with a simple but surprisingly memorable chorus make for a very listenable number, it’s reggae-tinged production style very good.
KBPS
‘Money To Burn’ is an equally great follow-up, another one of my highlights of the album. Lyrically well put together it combines well Brown’s distinctive vocals and her electropop style. Wrapping up the album is ‘Wonderland’ and ‘Dangerous’, both strong songs as the album reaches its conclusion. ‘Wonderland’ has quite possibly the best chorus on the album, making it one of the most perfectly composed pieces on the record. The throbbing ‘Dangerous’ ties things up well, its darker undertones offering a counterpoint to the perkier early numbers.
Stuffed to the rafters with catchy vocal and musical hooks this is Pip Brown’s best album to date and is the perfect pop-summer record to throw on in the car or at a barbecue. Loved it! TTT facebook.com/Ladyhawke/
The Lancashire Hotpots - Nowt Like The 80s Any long time fans of the Hotpots, Lancashire’s top comedy-folk band, will know what to expect from this, their ninth studio album in a decade, and won’t be disappointed. From a spot-on and wellobserved cover parody of an early Now! compilation to songs with a great selection of influences, ‘Nowt Like The Eighties’ is another tour de farce from the comedy band though as expected it doesn’t really do anything fresh from their successful formula, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Benefiting from drip-feeding several of the tracks over the last year to get them familiar to fans, some of the album feels already

remembering your card PIN which is hilarious in its ridiculousness.
‘Black Friday’, one of the previously previewed tracks, is a fun number about the day of crazy shopping, once more showcasing the great balance between musical production and observational lyrics. ‘My Pianist’ follows ‘Has Anyone Seen My Dongle’ and ‘My Wife Is An Ann Summer’s Rep’ as the album’s innuendo-laden number, and though a little bit more forced (steady) than those previous ones, is a fun doo-wop number that ticks the ‘Carry On’ box. recognisable through tracks like ‘Black Friday’ and ‘Lancashire’s For Me’, helping the album settle in, and if you do have chance to see the video for the latter online it will certainly get the laughs. ‘Last Can Blues’ is a fun opener but is a little like the Hotpots on autopilot, but it’s rockand-roll vibe proves the strong production values behind the band. ‘Do The Dad Dance’ is a much better start to the album, its Black Lace style and electro-funk music style much more interesting and sounds like it could be fun live. Continuing the electronic feel, ‘Eggs, Sausages, Chips and Beans’ offers a sound-alike parody of ‘heads, shoulders, knees and toes’, giving it a proper Northern make-over and proves to be a pretty catchy number.
Track four ‘Don’t Put Granny on the Internet’ is a classic, a sort of throw-back to their internet-referencing earlier material, with some great lyrics, rhymes and a bouncy rhythm. The album continues with its most absurd number, ‘6784’, a way of
KBPS
Reprising the food theme from earlier on ‘Fussy Eater’ and ‘It’s A Barmcake’ are two more fun tracks, the latter offering a new take on ‘Agadoo’ with the age old Facebook debate.
The Stock-Aitken and Waterman styled ‘Lancashire’s For Me’ is the best song on the LP, its mix of funny lyrics and production style at its peak here. The album nears its end with ‘Stop in the Name of Fudge’, a Supremes sound-a-like about the shrinking sizes of chocolate bars which isn’t one of the best songs on the album but ties things over nicely, before things end on ‘Dibnah’, a true lighters-out ending that you may have seen on the BBC. A tribute to the famous steeplejack Fred Dibnah, Dramatic, well produced and atmospheric, this is the perfect way to wrap up the album.
‘Nowt Like The 80s’ isn’t a revolutionary album from the comedy-folk band, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from the group in terms of style and sound, but there’s plenty of great new songs to love here and the band still have a great ear for a comedy record

a bit dancier whilst the Apollo 440-like ‘Catapult has guts. ‘Move Down South’ is one of the best on the album thanks to its memorable lyrics whilst the Frenchreferencing ‘Alvin’ is the best song on the album outside of the single with a very catchy hook, closely followed by the great ‘Walking’ as a near contender. Loose Meat Loose Meat James have released their fourteenth studio album, ‘Girl At the End of the World’ and the first one I’ve heard, and as a first visit into the world of the band that brought us ‘Sit Down’ it’s a good one as the LP is jam packed with great pop tunes and some memorable moments.
After an extended intro section we get into first song ‘Bitch’ which is better musically than it is lyrically, especially in its simple chorus, but it’s an energetic starting point. The drum machine starting ‘To My Surprise’ leads into a poppy calpyso-tinged number. Lead single ‘Nothing But Love’ with its choral start is one of the strongest songs the band have ever done, it’s chorus insanely catchy and its production very strong. ‘Attention’ is a grittier number with a pace that speeds up from the previous song, whilst ‘Dear John’ and ‘Feet of Clay’, though not remarkable, keep their heads above water. Roberta Flack’s ‘First Time I Ever Saw Your Face’ is in safe hands with Callaghan, her acoustic cover beautiful, reaching a great crescendo in parts. ‘Crazy Beautiful Life’, one of Callaghan’s best songs is next, and is just as great as the album version.
Singer-songwriter Callaghan returns with a 12-track EP of stripped-back renditions of her own songs and some well chosen covers, creating an EP which is a joy to listen to from start to finish.
Beginning with a gorgeous note-perfect cover of John Denver’s Annie’s Song, it’s difficult not to be won over by the sheer beauty of Callaghan’s voice in delivering the stripped back number. ‘Till I Hold You Once Again’, an original number follows, once more Callaghan’s voice over a simple backing piano being all that’s needed. Callaghan’s signature hit ‘Best Year’ follows, its string-arrangement working really well and cements this as a brilliantly composed song, with the Corr’s sounding ‘Last Song’
KBPS
Bob Dylan is up next with ‘Don’t Think Twice, it’s Alright’ before original track ‘We Don’t Have To Change The World’ wraps up the main LP, both songs beautifully delivered.
At the end we get a timely Prince cover in the form of ‘Purple Rain’, the more rocky guitar work and duetted vocals lifting it up as a fresh take, before a beautiful string-led take on ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ cements the album as something you need to hear now. Having experienced Callaghan live, this EP is the perfect capturing of her delightful voice and handling of songs and though a couple of covers on here have been covered many times she still makes them her own, and the balance between covers and original songs works brilliantly. A must hear. TTT facebook.com/callaghanmusic/

Hog Fever
We chat to 10cc’s Kevin Godley about his new exciting project.
Hog Fever is an exciting new project funded by Kickstarter that declares itself an ‘Ear Movie’. We spoke to musical legend Kevin Godley of 10CC and Godley and Crème about the new project. Here is a description of it in Kevin’s own words:
“It’s essentially a pure audio experience. It has all the production values of a feature film, how they put the audio together with music, and sound effects, soundscapes, and sound design, but with no pictures. It’s a bit like a radio play but brought into the 21st century with a bang.” Serialised over five parts of 20-25 minutes long, totalling the length of a feature-film, Hog Fever differentiates from a radio play due to adult content in it. “Sex, drugs, rock‘n’roll and motorcycles” are the key themes according to Godley who also contributed to the ear movie’s soundtrack.
“I contributed five songs to it. ‘Confessions’ is an interesting song that might not make sense when you first hear it but in the content of the film it does. It was a chord sequence we used as incidental music behind some dialogue that the main character speaks. “I felt there was a song in it, but it took me a while to figure out what the lyrics would be, and they turned out to be a truncated version of what he’s actually saying, the words he speaks in the film.”
Adapted by Kevin Godley from the screenplay written by Godley and Richard La Plante, Godley also directed the movie and plays eight roles within it. “That was something completely different for me.” Alongside his music work, Godley has also filmed many video projects, and we asked whether this helped in creating this new project.
KBPS
“I like to maintain a certain ignorance about things. I’ve found in my career that if I know too much a part of me likes to adhere to the rules but if I don’t know what the rules are I can try anything, so it’s a balance between the two. I’ve never really done anything like this before!” The project has echoes back from the time of Godley and Crème, when they released a triple album called ‘Consequences’. “Part of it was something not too far removed from this. There was a play in the middle of it that mixed music and dialogue, that was acted by Peter Cooke, so it’s something I’m revisiting but much more solidly.”
Godley has been very positive about the experience. “It was something that came together organically. It wasn’t like a gig I was paid to do – music videos are a little like that. This was a labour of love from the off. It was making sure everything worked at each stage.”
With a sequel planned out and plot lines being explored, Godley is keen to do another thanks to positive reviews on Amazon and his own enjoyment. “We’d do it in a shot!” So will Hog Fever be the first in a new genre of movie?
“What’s great about things that are just audio, you use your imagination much more. With a movie you’re given all the information but in this you define things yourself to a degree. It gives you the opportunity to stamp your own individuality onto it.” Keen to keep busy, Kevin Godley is already

working on new projects. “I invented a music collaboration app called Youdio, and pushing ahead with that. Say you play guitar or drums, you can film yourself doing it, and [uploading it] and up to six people can play together. “It’s exciting at the end of each day to check in and see what people have done. It’s a lovely feeling!
“I’d [also] like to one day direct a film with pictures, and I’m developing ideas for television and stage, pretty much staying with the entertainments sphere, but feeling into different areas.”

WHALE OF A TIME Mira Aasma speaks to us about her new single ‘Whale Song’ and plans for interesting collaborations
Mira Aasma is a Swedish singer who has just released a new single called ‘Whale Song’, and we were able to speak to her about the new song, which she describes as feeling small when you’re faced with a large ocean.
whole new world opened to me. It was a fantastic feeling, so great. It had always been a mystery to me. But now I have the tools of knowledge to produce. It’s now an important part of my music life.”
Inspiration came from her own personal experiences, relating them to real life moments. “I think people can relate to it in different ways. That’s why I always write in a story-telling way, so it’s easier [for listeners] to relate to.”
Looking ahead to the future, Mira would like to collaborate with other artists, and maybe something unexpected. “I’m really looking forward to discovering those possibilities. I’ve got a lot of creative people around me and some interesting things will appear!”
“It’s about a powerful feeling of being small compared to something bigger, being in that environment in life. It could be about escaping something, leaving the past, and finding something new that you’ve never seen before; discovering the unknown!”
Alongside the music, the artwork to the single of an iceberg reflects the deeper undiscovered side of people, with more below the surface. “There’s so much below the surface in all elements of life.”
Mira has some live gigs and festivals coming up but is still focused on the music. “I’ve just played in Stockholm and we’re going to make a small tour, and then my release party. We haven’t got plans for the autumn yet but we’ll be planning that soon.”
We moved on to ask Mira about how she got involved with music. “My first experience was singing in choirs and listening to choir music. Singing with a choir triggered feelings, and I was fascinated what you can do with arrangements. It’s so powerful. It’s a really awesome soundscape to be around.
Mira went to a Swedish music school when she was twelve, until she was fifteen, and this helped influence her music. “I learned to use the studio [there] so I got to learn to produce my own music. “There are so many possibilities with music. When I first got into music a

FROM SWITZERLAND WITH LOVE Nzilani on her new single, live gigs and being a voice on Peppa Pig!
Nzilani Francq is an exciting new 20-yearold singer who has released the incredible new single ‘Never Be’, and we got a chance to speak to the London-based singer about the record, which he describes as a song reacting to the artist she’s been compared to musically. “I’d describe it as a coming together of an emotion that a lot of artists feel and that I went through. It was a great way of expressing that.”
Nzilani described the recording process as fantastic. “I came over to London in November. I basically spent a week in the studio recording and it was an amazing experience.” Next week Nzilani is shooting the promotional video for the record but is keeping the promotional video under wraps for the moment. Looking ahead to the future, an album from Nzilani is already in the works.
nothing confirmed at the moment. “It sounds incredibly cheesy,” she said talking ambition further ambitions for 2016; “But anything I can do for my art, that helps that, is beneficial. For me that’s just up there. It’s everything I’ve wanted to do for a while!”
And alongside music there’s always a chance for her to expand into acting, having previously voiced a character in two episodes of Peppa Pig. “[It was] the character of Delphine Donkey,” she revealed. “Acting has always been a big love of mine. I’ve done musical theatre so I’ve been acting and singing since the age of four! It’s something in my blood that I love doing and am passionate about.”
“The album’s coming out in June, hopefully. Exciting stuff is definitely coming this year!”
Nzilani lived in Switzerland for eight years and has only just returned to the UK. “It’s very disorientating going from one country where you can travel for half an hour and be in a different city to one where you can do the same and be only five miles away!
“It’s very different but it’s nice to have a change of pace, to do something different once in a while, and keep things fresh.”
Later in the year Nzilani hopes to have some live gigs coming up though there’s
