ON THE RIGHT PAIGE We speak to Paige Monroe about her new single, singing around the house and her future plans and ambitions

Paige Monroe is a singer songwriter from Portsmouth in the UK who has recently released her single ‘Call It Love’. We spoke to her and asked her to describe the song and she was excited that it was out. “It’s very pumpy and energetic, with a kind of Kelly Clarkson vibe.” When asked if that comparison was intentional Paige said it wasn’t her initial intention. “After we tried figuring out a sound was kind of a good person to compare to.”

Putting the single together was a fun experience for the 18 year old singer. “I was in the studio for a couple of weeks, doing the EP at the same time. My producer Julian was lovely and he’s really, really talented, and he helped with the EP and single so much.”

Was there a favourite track on the EP for Paige? “My favourite one is the piano track at the end called ‘Don’t Break My Fall’ and I like to think that it would surprise people as it doesn’t sound like the other songs on the record. The other songs are quite pumpy, and this one is quite slow.” You can also watch a video now for ‘Call It Love’ and Paige found the experience of making it fun. “Everybody on set was very lovely. It was really exciting and cool but not that nerve-wracking. It was my first music video and it was over-whelming at first but once we got into it it was very professional. “We liked the concept with the big lights. It was filmed locally too, which was awesome.” Paige also performs live and does gigs in a variety of styles including acoustic and with the full sound. “With a stripped back session everyone can enjoy it and it’s quite personal”. Paige recently supported James TW which was a success for her and previously conducted some stripped back

piano-led ‘Monroe Sessions’ but she’s now concentrating on new sets in her bathroom. “It gives people an opportunity to hear my voice so they can get to know my voice. In the near future we’ll be doing something new too.” The songs at these sessions tend to be a mixture of popular songs at the moment of recording and also ones requested to her by her fans. “I just try and keep doing as many as I can to keep up-to-date.”

Singing from a young age, Paige began writing after being introduced into a session by her manager to test her. “It turned out I could write a song and it just went from there.” Paige has also spent time co-writing songs with a range of people. “If you work by yourself too much everything is just from one opinion or sound, so when you work with other people it’s a really good chance to merge the two brains and make a new flavour!”

Coming up Paige is working on some festivals and looking ahead to do more writing for future releases. “I like to keep things on a constant flow to keep myself busy and to keep releasing new music for people.” Looking to the future Paige hopes for some headline gigs and more releases so keep an eye out for more from Paige Monroe in the future!

CLAY WE ARE

We speak to Joe from Leeds band Clay about their new EP, their inspirations and brotherly writing sessions

Clay are a four piece band from Leeds made up of Joe Harvey, Jack Harvey, Rob Gration and Danny Armitage. Their new EP is called ‘Heaven’ and Joe from the band spoke to us about how it’s been a great way of pulling their tracks together into a cohesive release.

“It’s been great for us as it’s been hard to get our vibe across with just one track but with this record it feels like it’s what we’re all about and you get a good grasp of what we’re about on these tracks. “There’s a track called ‘Why?’ which is the rhythmic side of our band and it’s very intricate; there’s a track called ‘Nothing Happened’ which is a pop song; track called ‘Honest’ is our most honest work and musically is the favourite track we’ve ever done as it’s a real step up in what we’ve done with writing, and it’s the one most people have connected with.”

There’s already been a great reaction to the single from those who’ve heard it. “We weren’t sure how people were going to take it as up to now what we’ve put out has been quite upbeat and easy listening. This one is a bit different and covers other genres; it’s a bit garage-y in the instrumentation. Sonically it’s a very different sound, and we’ve been messing around with vocal techniques and styles, so it does sound like it’s from a different band, and I wondered if people would get it, but they’ve got it straight away and there has been a great reception!” The video to ‘Honest’ mixes archive footage with performances and I asked whether that footage is genuine. “It’s funny as the first track we put out was called ‘Sundance’ and when we set out to make a video we were going to make a really good one and spend a few thousand on it and we realised we had no money, so we resorted back to old VHS

KBPS

footage and it went down a treat, so when it came to doing a video for this one it felt like it was in the same family of songs so the most fitting way to do it was to take bits of the ‘Sundance’ video era and put it to this, accompanied by studio footage.

“In a nutshell, when I was making the ‘Honest’ video, it felt like a burst of life, and everything from being a kid to being in the studio, and live footage, and an amalgamation of everything that came out of my brain, and I’m really happy it all came out that way.” In further reference to their debut single ‘Sundance’ it was used in the HBO television series ‘Ballers’. “It was strange going from writing a song in our house to hearing it on an American television show! You write these songs hoping you might get to that stage but when it happens it’s the weirdest thing.”

When it comes to the songs the two brothers in the band are the main writers. “We’ve always written music together. It’s always been a very natural process. It’s quite strange as I’ve written with other people in the past but there’s something special about us writing together, it just works. “There are some tracks that we’ll throw away as they’re not right for the band but he tends to write the music and I’ll write the melodies and the lyrics but it something changes, and differs on some tracks. One of us will write a half a track and the other the other half and it just gels. “With some bands they get into the studio and jam on their instruments. With us, because me and Jack live together, we write in a different way. We’ll have a vocal idea or a keyboard riff and play it into the computer

The music magazine

11

so before Rob or Dan have heard any snippets of it they’ll hear a full song straight away. The song evolves so quickly from start to finish as we’re together. I just see it as the norm, as it’s the modern day. I don’t see the point in getting into a studio. Technology has moved so quickly, we need to move as fast!”

The band are touring in August with the tour culminating in Leed’s Brudenell Social Club. Joe was excited for the dates. “I can’t wait. Leeds has sold out and Sheffield, Birmingham and Liverpool are on their way. It’s crazy as you start a band hoping you’ll play for different people and the hope you might get booked in a different city, but now to be on our debut headline tour it blows our mind. “We were at Scotland a few weeks ago and there were people there to see us! It’s great that we can travel somewhere and people are singing our songs. It never gets old that feeling. To have eight consecutive shows is incredible.”

KBPS

Clay have performed at many events recently including Tramlines and the Isle of Wight festival. Joe describes their live sound as varied. “We don’t tie ourselves down to one genre of music; that’s the beauty of our band and why we have such a variety of fans. “We have influences in modern pop music, guitar, 80s, 90s, and hip-hop. We get compared to Duran Duran, to the Streets, to the Arctic Monkeys! We like our music to be inspiring and thought-provoking.” And what are the plans for the future? “We have plans for September and October but my dream is to get onto Jools Holland’s show! That’s the dream!”

Young At Heart

Here are whenyoung, an exciting new band 13 music releasing The their new magazine single ‘See How They Run’

KBPS

Working on their live show, Andrew says their sound will be intense. “We want to justify the songs live and even make them even better live, and we’re working hard on that.” whenyoung are a London-based band who have just released their debut single ‘See How They Run’. Andrew from the band describes their two-minute long debut as “short and punchy.”

“We wanted to start our debut single with a bang; it’s quite loud and brash and that’s how we want to start out! We’ve got a bunch of songs with different styles and melodies but [See How They Run] is what we’re going for with this.”

But how does this single, which has been receiving a great reaction online, compare to their catalogue. “It’s a good taster of what we’re about. I wouldn’t say you could categorise us with one song but it’s a taste of what we’re about and what’s to come.” There is also a video for the song which you can see below. “We didn’t really have a budget so it was a case of seeing what we could do, calling up some friends and having some fun with it. We wanted to take certain elements of the song and recreate them in an interesting video format that keeps you entertained.”

Whenyoung are playing their first show next month and are building up to that now. “We’ve had interested blogs, lots of interviews. General feedback has been really good about it. It’s rare that a band starts off and is determined to release a song that’s two minutes long and in your face. “I think bands are too nice these days!”

KBPS

The band have played Brighton’s The Great Escape this summer but what are their future plans?

“In the last six months we’ve been working hard at the actual recordings so we’ve got a lot of songs under our belt. As soon as we get this one out there and people start hearing it and we do some live shows it’s straight onto the next one. “You’ll be definitely hearing more of us!”, promising a release of more songs. “If we get a couple of our live dates done and dusted we’ll know more about where we’re standing!”

Looking even further ahead Andrew would love the band to be on a support tour “to get out there and play a lot of live shows and really get to show people what we can do. “As a musician it’s great to be able to play, record and rehearse your own music but when people take it on board and enjoy it it really makes the difference and that’s what it’s all about.”

HEAR THEM EVERYWHERE

We speak to band Eveywhere about their new single ‘Some Other Dude’.

Everywhere are an alternative rock band from London and have just released their new track “Some Other Dude”. But how would they describe it?

“It’s a funky little jam and it’s a mix between the 1975 and the Wombats. It’s a song about the moments where we think back, about the things we should have done but failed to act, usually about love. It could be the person in the bar, or the person on the dancefloor. And when we try to act on this moment and fail to do so.” Fans of the 1975 and the Wombats, the inspiration for this song came from the experiences of the band and everyone who experiences this sort of things, and there will also soon be a video out to go with the song.

‘Some Other Dude’ follows ‘Shades of Night’ which was inspired by the sound of the Killers. “It was a little bit harder in the sound, a bit heavier on the guitars. We have another track called ‘Better Off Alone’ which is a bit funkier and more danceable.” Everywhere will also have an EP out in September, and they’re currently putting the finishing touches to this. The band hopes to have an album out later. “We have a lot of material to record but I guess we want to just give it a little more time and see how people

react to it, and take it forward when the time feels right!”

Everywhere are also performing live through the summer, and their live sound is a little bit heavier. “There’s a little more bit guitar, a little less synthesizer. It’s an energetic performance. We try to do our best always, and try to make the set as powerful as we possibly can. “We recently did shows in Leeds and Manchester, and Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh next.”

And their plans for the future. “I really hope this new track takes off. We’ve had a great audience reaction for it. We hope it will get played in the clubs. It’s working well, and I hope it works out, and we get more shows and we get out on the road more and just keep on banging it! Our hopes are always high when we deal with music as it’s such a passion for us!”

Prové Yourself

Eddie Prové on his new soulful pop release

Eddie Prové is a musician from Reading and he’s just released his ‘Silent Love’ EP and we spoke to him about the release, the new single ‘Never Cared’ which he describes as a ‘soulful, pop song’.

“I tried to keep it quite simple structurally, to really put the lyrics across for that song. It’s very piano based, focus on the piano and vocals”. Alongside this song Prové has also created a video for song ‘Love For A Day’ which will be out in a few weeks having been teased last week online. He has also been on the live circuit including a recent performance at Live at Leeds, a show he described as excellent.

“I’ve never been to Leeds or played live there either. A great crowd came along as it was a mixture between local bands and artists from around the country. It was a great kind of festival, a good turnout and everyone was in a great mood and it went really well.” Eddie Prové is currently planning further dates after an upcoming one in Brighton and will be revealing more information soon online.

KBPS

When he’s not playing music, Eddie is a keen golfer. “I like to get out on the course if I get a free moment. It’s a nice way to relax and get out into the sun. I’m not very good but I guess that’s why I keep playing, I just need to get better!”

Keen on social media promotion, Eddie loves interacting with his fans, and he’s also busy planning his next steps and promoting his EP through his social media. “We’re hoping to release a second EP by the end of the year.” Looking ahead to the future, Eddie will be concentrating on this new extended play once the dust has settled on his latest release. “I’ve already got a lot of the songs that I’m thinking for the second EP, writing and recording them at the moment, trying to get ahead of ourselves. And also get some nice summer live shows going and making an impact with them and keeping the momentum going into the next year.”

THE KING

Here is Rex Domino with their brand new EP called ‘God’s Teeth’ and we speak to him about it

Based in Portsmouth, Rex Domino is a spoken word electro-poetry artist with a new EP coming out this month called ‘God’s Teeth’. We caught up with the lyricist fresh from a visit to the Tate Modern to chat about his single and his music, starting with the EP with the three tracks on it described by him as having a sombre and dystopian tone.

“The words themselves are quite bleak and yearning but the music paints a kind of cinematic landscape behind that, quite electronic and glitchy. It’s somewhere poetry and EDM.”

Described as part-MC, part-poet, part spoken word artist, Domino was more open about himself. “I’ll be whatever the person wants me to be. I’ll wear whatever hat sits at the time. “I’m very much interested in doing hip-hop things, or grime things. I enjoy the intimacy

of the spoken word where people can latch onto the words.”

The message behind the lyrics is also important for Rex Domino. “It’s important to say something. It need not be political, not necessarily all that clear, but something sincere or honest. Something that will get a point across rather than being for its own sake.

“We’re in a time where you can draw parallels to the Thatcher era and the punk music that was coming out back then, but I think because everyone is so self-absorbed in this realm of digital narcissism there’s less of that rebellious spirit. But I think we’re seeing more of that in the emergence of grime; music that has an aggressive, anti-social message becoming cooler, which I think is only a good thing.

KBPS The music magazine

20

“There’s certainly an appetite for music that’s got some substance to it.”

A video has been made for ‘Sam’s Spoon’ taking from the EP, with Rex positive about the creation of it, which was made with support from his collaborators Stanky and Polar Kid.

“They took their glitchy audio techniques and conveyed them into the aesthetics. [The video] is proper dark, proper twisted, proper obscure. The vibe I was trying to get was like a broken scanner; like a digital purgatory, the bit between the buffer where everything is messed up.

“[The video] emphasises the darkness and the strangeness,” he told us as we discussed the visual side of his work complimenting his music before we moved onto talking about his future gigs. “[My set] is essentially live electronic stuff; we work with a tape machine; we like to keep it all weird and organic and I run my vocals through some effects. It’s all about that electronic performance. It’s just me and the two producers!”

Coming up for Rex Domino looks to be more work with his producers and he looks forward to more collaborations and developments as an artist. “Writing more things, coming up with new angles of ways of explaining my thoughts and such. Keeping on writing, and pushing for an album sometime next year!”

And for other ambitions? “I find ambition can be dangerous. I just want to really enjoy the things we are doing and continue to build something. I want to make a really sincere, affecting project and push it as far as we can. “Play to as many people as possible, get the song heard by as many people as possible, all whilst maintaining a modicum of obscure integrity!”

Eurovision Song Contest Stockholm 2016 As always it’s a mixed bag of songs and will truly depend on how poppy your tastes are and if you have any political allegiances.

Arriving just a little late for inclusion in the last edition of KBPS, we perhaps don’t need to really give this a review as you’re either a fan of Eurovision or you’re not.

KBPS

For what it’s worth we have soft spots for several songs including ‘Sound of Silence’ (Australia); ‘What’s the Pressure’ (Belgium); ‘If Love Was A Crime’ (Bulgaria); ‘You’re Not Alone’ (United Kingdom); ‘Pioneer’ (Hungry); ‘Sunlight’ (Ireland); ‘I’ve Been Waiting For This Night’ (Lithuania); ‘Falling Stars’ (Moldova); ‘Slow Down’ (Netherlands); ‘Blue and Red’ (Slovenia); and ‘I Didn’t Know’ (San Marino). But what do we know?

It’s a mixed bag but fans will lap it up, though it doesn’t feel quite as good as last year’s, if Eurovision is indeed worthy of comparison year on year... T

LIVING FOREVER

We speak to Frank D’Angelo about his new movie and the accompanying song

We spoke to Frank D’Angelo as he was with his team editing a new movie ‘The Red Maple Leaf’. His new single is ‘I Want To Live Forever’. “It’s one of my favourite tunes I’ve ever written in my life,” D’Angelo told us. “I don’t think there’s not a human being on the planet that doesn’t want to live forever!”

The song was written for his movie ‘Sicilian Vampire’, which came out in the cinemas in North America in May before opening across the world in the summer. “The inspiration comes from the instinct of human beings to survive forever no matter what is thrown at them.”

Frank explains the concept of the movie. “It’s about a gangster, a Sicilian guy, and he’s got a crew that he’s been with since childhood, and once a month they go play cards in a cottage up in the woods and a bat bites them and throughout the movie it shows what happens to him after this bat bites.” D’Angelo was very positive about his experience filming the movie. “It was one of my favourite movies. I got to work with James Caan, the great Daryl Hannah, Michael Paré and it was just a lot of fun.” Frank D’Angelo himself is involved with a lot of different things from music to acting and even a talk show. We were keen to know how he juggles everything. “I love all of it. If someone says to you when you wake up in a morning how you deal with it all; it’s just a routine. I don’t know how it happens but it happens.” D’Angelo’s talk show has just entered its seventh season and has featured interviews with such big names as Al Pacino, Paul Newman, Tony Bennett and many more. “It

gets over a million viewers, it’s national and we have lots of fun doing it. It’s once a week, every Friday night at midnight in Canada, but it bleeds into the United States through Michigan and New York and we have a good time, and we’re going into season eight this [Autumn].” Working on ‘The Red Maple Leaf’, it tells the story of the US ambassador to Canada and his daughter who gets kidnapped. “There’s a fight over who has jurisdiction. Is it the FBI? The CIA? Or the Canadian police authorities?” The two-hour film was shot in January and has an all-star cast, and should have now been completed.

THE SOUND OF THE SUMMER We speak to Jamie Porter about how his single could well be the sound of the season

Jamie Porter has released his new single ‘Sound of the Summer’ and we quizzed him on whether it is indeed the sound of summer 2016.

“The title says it all! It’s essentially about how we get a buzz when the sun comes out and everybody gets on their motorbikes, jet skies or whatever floats their boat. For me it was saying that everyone has a different sound of the summer and obviously mine is through music! It’s about having a good time in the sun and not having a care, driving around listening to the radio. Old school stuff before the internet!” The lyrics, production and feel of the song all work together to capture a real summery feel and we were keen to know how he’d achieved this.

“I was in my songwriting zone. It was a riff I came up with. It was a simple couple of chords – I have a while before I catch up with Status Quo!. I’ve got so many influences but there’s a Beach Boys vibe in there. Not intentionally, but in the backing that comes along. But I recorded it in my home studio, but I have a friend who has a studio down the road, and he helps me tweak it and make it sound amazing. “It’s the backing vocals, the melodies, the harmonies. When I write it’s about constructing that picture in the music and to me that’s the important thing.”

Jamie says that his home studio gives him the freedom to spend time on his songs. “I don’t do anything complex. I don’t take a huge amount of time. I have a set formula. I will come up with ideas. Technology helps. I can record ideas on my phone and a notepad and then I can sketch out my idea at home and add the guitar, basslines, pianos,

KBPS

backing vocals and synths. The Hammond is mostly what I use. I’ve got a vibe going at the moment. “The only thing I can’t really do is drums so I kind of sketch that out and then I get someone to help me with that.”

Jamie Porter is also working on a lighthearted music video for the song, which will be live-focussed and capturing people enjoying their summer. “One of the members of the band is a cameraman in his day job so that helps.” “Providing we get some sunny days in the run up to summer!” he told us, talking about the capturing of the season.

Jamie Porter has spent years building up his skills and previously played bass in a band. “I needed to gain confidence myself in writing material. You can spend a lot of time thinking you’re not good enough to do something, and at the end of the day you’ve got to get out and do your thing and have the confidence to do it. “I decided after leaving the last band I was going to do my own thing and create my own sound and see if anyone liked it, and go with the flow.” Jamie Porter and his band also had some live dates recently including the Wales Diversity Festival and several live gigs, with more coming up in the pipeline. “We’re pretty well rehearsed. We’ve got an album coming out later in the year so we’re fine-tuning some of the newer material, if you like, for the live set. “I’ve got a couple of EPs out already for digital download and a single put out last year, so we have a good 90 minute to two

Writing down ‘The Trials of Life’ as a potential title, Jamie showcased how he was always on the lookout for new ideas. “I’m a sucker for writing down ideas for songwriting!

hour set of original material that we can play.”

We were intrigued on finding out more about the musical direction of his new album. “I would say it’s a collection of love-based songs with a few rockers. Some of the tracks have a slightly southern feel. I call it countryinfluenced music with a blues-rock vein. Some people say it sounds like Tom Petty. It depends on what people’s influences are as to what they hear on it. But it’s essentially two guitars running off each other. “It’s the trials of life. I haven’t got a title for it yet, but I might get another couple of tracks on it yet but it depends on how the writing goes and the timescale.”

KBPS

“Quite often I’ll wake up night thinking ‘that’s a good idea for a song’. You hear about songwriters having a notebook by the bed. I never remember to put it out, thinking I’ll remember it in the morning! I’ll have to think of something else like scratching it into the walls like a prisoner in a film!”

And plans for the future? “To get loads more gigs under my belt. This has been an obsession of mine for years, so I want to get out there, play bigger venues, and generally enjoy the music more.

“I don’t want to go out there and say I’ll hit the big time. It’s a difficult time now in the music industry to break into it and make money. I enjoy it so I’ve got to keep doing it, but it’ll be nice to get a bit of payback for the work!”

EPs & LPs Reviewed Introflirt Temporary Heaven

Wiyaala - Wiyaala

Labelled as Afro-Pop, Wiyaala’s self-titled is a tour-de-force of energetic, powerful, African music with a strong pop edge. Opening track ‘Tinambanyi (Here We Come)’ is an absolute corker of an opening, the energy and vibe quickly hitting you right between the eyes. Introflirt’s ‘Temporary Heaven’ is an eighttrack EP of synth-electronic music with a distinctly upbeat feel, a marriage between eighties-throwback riffs and the subdued lead vocals.

From chip-tune influences on ‘Could Be Fun’ to modem-dial-up-sounding ‘Not Like Mine’, the Chvrches-style ‘Orange Light’ with its ‘I don’t enjoy this’ riff to the drum machine dominating titular track, ‘Temporary Heaven’ makes up for a lack of variety in its numbers by sticking to a strong theme, and electronic fans looking for something a little more throwback will be pleased with this. T

KBPS

With an album sung mostly in Sissala, but ocassionally in English like on track two ‘Africa’, this is an album that sparks with both great production, strong vocals and also thought-provoking lyrics, amongst its toetapping rhythms. Highlights of the album include the dance-op excitement of ‘Siiko’, the slow sultry ‘Leno’, ballad ‘Idunne’ and the more electronic ‘Kandibanye’ which weaves in a more Asianvibe into the style. If you’re looking for a colourful, vibrant and warm album to heat up your summer playlist, with a few slower numbers thrown in for good measure, then you need to check this out. TT

Electric Six Roulette Stars of Metro Detroit

Another major highlight of the piece is the Dubai Bros. remix of ‘Night Vision’. Having previously done a brilliant job on their earlier remix of ‘Interchangeable Night’, this dancier darker take on the Switzerland track is a delight of electronic and vocoder effects and breathes new life into a decade-old track. As the album reaches its conclusion we get the faster, funkier ‘I Upgraded To You’, the simple and stripped back ‘Shrink the Bastards’ and a calpyso remix of a song that is taken from their next album proper that delivers some catchiness and sunniness.

Only the final track of ‘When The Lights Go Out’, a Oingo Boingo cover, does the LP lose its focus, this track not a very exciting chorus, though still listenable. Detroit band Electric Six ran a Kickstarter campaign last year to create a mock-reality show and as a side-project to that comes this nine-track soundtrack which is actually much better than the film and more worth the investment than the movie.

Containing some really strong songs and remixes, this is a real treat for fans of the band and newcomers alike. TTT

STFU - What We Want

A mixture of covers and original material the highlight of the album is track three, ‘An Omen of Things To Come’, a catchy, high energy riff-heavy track that is one of the best tracks the band has ever done.

The LP opens with the darker ‘Compensation’ whose simpler chorus quickly settles in alongside a driving production feel, a sort of mixture between their older material and Robbie Williams’ Radio. Their take on Deep Purple’s ‘All Night Long’ is as good as the original whilst Animotion’s ‘Obsession’ is an improvement, the more modern production values and split vocals improving on the first take, the music much chunkier and crisper, whilst still retaining the catchy vocal line.

KBPS

It’s perhaps a little lazy of me to start a review with a parody of the band’s name, but STFU is what I’d like to say to them as this music is not particularly to my taste, ‘What

We Want’ a collection of slow, ponderous, multi-layered but disturbingly off-beat numbers, such as track two ‘Second Time’ which balances an awkward line between eccentric cacophany and noise.

The heavier, more beat-focussed ‘Do It Now’ at track three is a big improvement and feels more accomplished whilst ‘New Shadows’ feels less sonically uncomfortable and much more listenable.

The album does get easier to listen to and get involved with as the album progresses but it’s perhaps a little too late and it instead merges together into a muddy mix of similar sounding tracks.

Gringo Star - The Sides and In Between

Along the way we get the best track on the album ‘Magic’ with its Arctic Monkeys-verses and sixties-themed chorus whilst ‘Get Closer’ cranks up the rock. ‘Still Alive’ whips out the toe-tapping style and country influences whilst ‘Going Home’ brings the swagger and a fun whistling riff. ‘Knee Deep’ keeps that theme going, in a number that could be best described as sultry and smooth whilst ‘Heading South’ is the second best number of the record with a great classic sound. ‘Undone’ brings us full circle with more whistling and a neatly composed feel.

This album is many things, and it’s gritty, raw and unpolished but these certainly keep things interesting and it’s a great collection of short songs that mix pop with indie, punk with rock. TT

Dick Valentine Quiet Time / Raw

‘The Sides and In Between by Gringo Star is an indie album that’s pleasingly raw and lo-fie, with a poppy-indieness that ticks all the boxes, from the gritty opener of ‘Rotten’ to the closing quick numbers of ‘It’s You’ and ‘The Last Trace’, the latter having shades of the 1950s in its production.

KBPS

With Electric Six already reviewed we now switch to two releases from their lead singer Dick Valentine.

The music magazine

One is ‘Raw’, a supporting CD to the previously reviewed Kickstarter which includes sixteen tracks, mostly instrumental, including various early demos of earlier tracks and some others. This is definitely mostly for fans and more of interest in seeing how records come together rather than for out-and-out listening. Highlights include a more electronic ‘Hello! I See You’ and a beatier ‘Making Progress’. Also for the fans, but a much better listen, is ‘Quiet Time’, his fourth solo album. Here are sixteen Electric Six and Evil Coward songs stripped back and rendered in acoustic guitar, and occasionally synth. Highlights here include a great Oasis-esque version of previous Kickstater track ‘Wikileaks’, a synthless ‘Heartbearts and Brainwaves’ and a less rocky ‘Take Another Shape’. Though many of the songs are not as great as their originals hearing them stripped back and more vulnerable musically make for a great listen, and allow you to focus more on the lyrics and see how they can be heard without the production. Imagine a greatest hits in acoustic form, this is a great record of a strong songwriter. TT

Tom Odell Wrong Crowd Bought on the strength of lead single ‘Magnestised’, one of my favourite songs of the year, ‘Wrong Crowd’ is a really solid and listenable new album from Tom Crowd, starting with the driving-forward titular track that balances well between the stripped-back production and singable chorus.

Second track ‘Magnetised’ is of course the best track on the CD, its steady drum beat, powerful chorus, heartfelt lyrics and dancevibe all working together to turn it into a great anthem.

New single ‘Concrete’ is a cool, fingerclicking, piece of swagger with its too-coolfor-school chorus quickly hitting you with its visual imagery.

‘Constellation’ and ‘Sparrow’ keep things moving whilst ‘Still Getting Used to Being On My Own’ once more matches the well written lyrics with a more heartfelt singing style, here with some great retro moments thrown into the mix. ‘Silhouette’ is the most energetic and poppy song on the album with a slight ‘Pet Shop Boys’ vibe whilst ‘Jealousy’ and ‘Daddy’, though less noteable, are smooth enough.

‘Here I Am’ is close to ‘Magnetised’ as the best song on the album, it’s quotable chorus, piano line and hand-claps adding to the well composed piece.

KBPS

The rest of the album tends to tail away a bit, with the bonus tracks actually better than some of the main tracks, in particular the gentle ‘Mystery’ and self-referential ‘Entertainment’.

The music magazine

34

‘Wrong Crowd’ isn’t the most dramatic of albums and has its fair share of filler but in ‘Magnetised’, ‘Concrete’ and ‘Here I Am’ has three big anthems. Well worth a spin thanks to Odell calm and cool vibe and voice, and some heartfelt lyrics. TT

Amber Arcades Fading Lines

Michelle Stodart Pieces

This nine-track album, with lead single ‘Ain’t No Woman’ at its heart, is a gentle yet relentless downbeat piece but that does suit Stodart’s voice.

With atmospheric music, a pleasingly freeform style to its ebbing and flowing sound, it’s a relaxing, calming experience. It does perhaps stick too rigidly to the same formula and sound, with little variety amongst its clutch of tracks, but for smooth, orchestral and relaxing numbers you can’t go far wrong with this. Outside of the title track personal favourites include ‘Just Anyone’ and closer ‘Over The Hill’. T

KBPS

‘Fading Lines’ is ten tracks of similar sounding, light music that falls distinctly into gentle, easy-listening. Opener ‘Come With Me’ is the most distinctive of all the tracks, possibly as the first experienced, its guitar-iff carrying it, but thins becomes more maudlin during ‘Constant’s Dream’ and though her voice is calming and interesting the constant depressive sound and lack of huge distinction between tracks means that each one blends into the next, and this quickly becomes tiresome. ‘Perpetuum Mobile’, with its drum-machine lilt, offers a different flavour as it leaks into ‘Right Now’ but its still not really enough to hold back the tide of similarity and relentlessly downbeat numbers. ‘This Time’ feels a little happier but overall its far too samey and gloomy. With some more distinctive songs and a more regimented control of her wavering vocals and future albums could be more promising.

The Swagger The Swagger (EP)

Coming in at four tracks this EP does have plenty of swagger in its quartet of swirling rock numbers. Opener ‘Stoned’ sets the pace whilst ‘She Gonna Blow My Mind’ kicks off with a solidly produced rock riff that gets settled in before the vocals appear. ‘Keep on Fighting’ is faster with shades of Black Sabbath at the height of their powers though with more credible lead vocals, though once more it’s the music not the words doing the talking.

Closer ‘Ride’ feels like the best track with a stronger vocal hook to grab onto, rounding off a solid rock package that boasts promise for them. T

Mari Wilson Pop Deluxe

Mari Wilson releases this beautiful collection of 13 covers, captivating a delightful sixties throwback simplicity to the records, stamping her mark on such numbers as ‘Always Something There To Remind Me’; ‘Don’t Sleep in the Subway’, given a Pet Shop Boys-like disco thump; and ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’. Employing a good mixture of songs and keeping them familiar enough whilst also giving them a slight tweak in flavour, only the deathly slow take on ‘24 Hours From Tulsa’ feels like a mis-fire and leaves you longing for the original.

Highlights include ‘I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten’ and ‘The Look of Love’ but in truth all the songs bar the one are well worth listening to. Balancing the fine line between familiarity and freshness, this is a mostly great collection from Wilson. TT

Molly’s Daggers Prima Materia

Vibrissae Somewhere Away

‘Prima Materia’ by Molly’s Daggers brings you ten great rock’n’roll numbers wrapped in some surprisingly fun polish, starting with the country-tinged ‘Give Up Your Lovin’ To Me’. The riffs continue coming with the jaunty, bouncy ‘Shakin’ Like The Leaves on the Trees’ whilst ‘44 Stone Jenny’ feels like the best number of the LP.

Vibrissae’s new LP is an unusual fare, a mix of short punchy instrumentals like ‘Whiskers’ and ‘Bulan’ and longer, sonically led numbers from the chunky electronica of ‘Crooked Smile’ with the occasional appearance of ethereal, light vocals on ‘Not Forever’ and ‘Need’. Numbers like ‘Incident Report’ are a little more industrial in their electronic sound but all songs offering something a little varied and different to the formula.

‘Sweet Mama’ impresses with the best guitar riff on the album, with ‘Zin-Uru’ a neat Pink Floyd-esque break down. ‘Spoon Of Your Sugar’ is a contender for the best track on the album, its catchy upbeat almost Status Quo feel being really good.

The album wraps up with slower numbers including the Johnny Cash / Bob Dylan-esque ‘Needle & Thread’, concluding an album that mixes up the tempos but delivers the rock and moments of radio-friendly catchiness. TT

KBPS

It’s not a hugely powerful album but it ebbs and flows with intriguing production values and solid concepts, culimating in the 10-minute long ‘Somewhere Away’ which takes all the elements of the previous tracks and combines them well, adding heft to the previous tracks which only add up to 27 minutes whilst delivering an electronic, indie, building musical opus that nicely wraps things up.

An intriguing collection of songs, which flow nicely and keep things fresh, whilst fitting into a clear box. T

Scatter Factory Scatter Factory

Weighing it just under fifty minutes, Scatter Factory’s self-titled album is an adventure into another whirly of swirling piano riffs and hooks on tracks like ‘Out the Blocks’, ‘PowWow’ and closer ‘Mea Culpa’.

Keeping things fresh with a range of instrumentals, styles and foley, we get the sound of rain on the final track and calls of young children, footsteps and the panting of a dog amongst traffic in a weird looping interlude to penultimate piece ‘Not There Yet (And It’s Getting Dark)’. Strange, other worldly, and eerie in parts, this is a definite lie down, close your eyes and drift away, like a wordless Rokysopp or more sensual Pink Floyd. TT

Perpacity - Arise

Over fourteen tracks Perpacity’s ‘Arise’ delivers electronic instrumental, Enigmastyle orchestral pieces and deep-vocal-led numbers, all coming together to, like Scatter Factory’s LP, deliver a calming and soothing musical exploration of different landscapes. From the dramatic sweeps of short opener ‘In the Beginning’ to the thematically and musically similar ‘In The End’, the LP charts the high and lows of the eighties on ‘9725’, the electronic-tinged ‘Sundown’ and poprock hooks on the album’s best number ‘In This Heaven’.

With a surprising freshness across its tracks, all of which employ some kind of grandiose statement in their track titles, this is a hypnotic listen from start to finish with chunky production values, a captivating lead vocal and a swirling electronic feel. Delightful. TT

Martin Creed Thoughts Lined Up ‘Thoughts Lined Up’ is an eccentric collection of 24 off-the-wall tracks of distinctive Scottish vocals, crazy lyrics and layouts, and unusual musical arrangements, offering a very exciting and wacky collection of styles that shifts from the limited lyrics of opener ‘I’m Going To Do Something Soon’ and the rather contrived words of ‘Princess Taxi Girl’ that give the distinct feeling of being developed as part of a stream of consciousness alongside a dictionary of rhymes stolen from Des Ree or Shania Twain.

The album is a series of short ideas, only one longer than 2 or 3 minutes, and it quickly becomes the musical equivaeltn of a one-liner comedian: if you don’t like one idea another one will come up soon. The album is crazy, wacky and unexpected though the balance of the two different vocals at times becomes a little over-powering. It’s certainly a weird album, not entirely listenable at all times, but you can never accuse the tracks of being boring or sticking to one formula, but it does come across a little bit like it could well be a secret David Brent project at times. Looking at the tracks, ‘Understanding’, with its hand claps and guitar plucking is one of the best on the LP with its funky, country-tinged moments.

With its whoops and howls, ‘If It’s Not One Thing It’s the Other’ sounds like a sing-a-long at a hippy conventions with lyrics being made up on the spot like a vegan musical edition of ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’

The best track on the album is probably ‘Let’s Come To An Arrangement’ with its catchy countryfolk riff making it memorable in its weirdness. The album begans to feel a lot like a series of simple concepts put into an album with the editor away on holiday to cut it back.

We later get a bit of politics and flute on ‘Border Control’ though it feels much too repetitive, as well as a random piece of spoken word on ‘Prayer’. ‘Let Them In’ has hints of the 1930s in its sound, whilst ‘It’s You’ whips out a mouth-organ because at this point you might think why not, as the album has had everything else on it. ‘I Found Lost’ is 57-seconds long, ‘Text Me Back’ repeats these three words over-and-over again like a desperate teenager after a night out clubbing. ‘One Two Three’ eschews lyrics all together to sound like a sample of some schoolchildren learning scales in a music lesson.

We later get a poem called ‘Massive Boat’ that is just 14-seconds long and ‘The Direction of Love’, a song that actually surpasses 4-minutes, and is thev closest to an actual song we get but again the title of the song makes up the bulks of the lyrics, aside from the word ‘left’. You can never accuse this album of being boring or not experimental. This is anything but, but equally it’s a mish-mash of an experience with quite a few skippable numbers. Crazy. T

‘Everybody Needs Someone To Hate’, which includes the line ‘Everybody Needs Someone to Lick’ amongst its Buzzfeed list of lyrics.

With the album continuing on in a random way we get ‘(You Put Your) Hand In My Hand’ with lyrics like ‘You Put Your Foot In My Mouth’ whilst the electronic elements of ‘Prisoner of Rhythm’ adds a little freshness. To refer to a track ‘What Is It?’ is a classic analysis of this album.

Rosie Nimmo is a folk, jazz and pop singer from Edinburgh signed to record label ‘Kick My Heels’. She has just released her new album, her third, called ‘Scrapbook’.

Rosie described it as being a long process but a good one. “It’s been six years since I released an album. I like this one the best out of them all. I’ve liked each one as they’ve progressed. But I think this is a better produced album – polished isn’t really the word as that’s not me. It’s by the same producer, but it’s a development of the previous two.”

And how does the title come about? She told us the album is reflective of her life and memories. “When I was a little girl I used to collect scraps, which were cut-outs of images and things. The image on the front of the album is of the scrap, a painting of the Pooti? By Raphael and the Madonna of the Sistine Channel. I used that because scraps, when I was young, was one of the central images. “Then I went to art college about twenty years ago and developed that scrap childhood memory. I also had an etching that I really liked so I used it on the cover. Everything just seemed to tie up, it seemed to be happy coincidences. Synchronicity!”

Rosie Nimmo, alongside music, is a very visual person with experience in design and photography. “I haven’t done as much visual art recently as I’m just coming back into it again this year. There’s been a bit of a break whilst I’ve been improving my musical skills and that path, but this year feels like it’s all coming together now.

“All three album covers have been designed by me but the last one was a photograph and the first a PhotoShop design.”

I asked if she enjoyed having a hand in all the creative aspects of a music project. “You could say I was a control freak!” she joked. “It’s just nice to be involved in all the different aspects.”

When quizzed on the album and a favourite track, Rosie settled on the upbeat track of “It’s So Good To Be Your Friend”, commenting that her favourite depends on which song matches her mood. “My favourite song of all time is the Carol King song ‘You’ve Got A Friend’ and I love the James Taylor version of it, but my friends have been so important in my life, it was nice to write a song on how important friendship is.

“Mark, who is the producer of the album and has contributed lots of musical parts to it and co-writing two of the songs too, is a pal as well and it just felt like a thank you really.” Rosie Nimmo’s musical career also includes work as part of a five-piece blues-rock and soul band, but which does she prefer? “It’s like comparing apples and oranges actually. Even though i’m still singing I probably get more fulfilment from doing my own stuff. When I do the band work that can be huge fun and I play harmonica on that, and people do a double-take with that. That can be great fun as there are phenomenal musicians in the band and we played two gigs back-toback in March when the French fans were up in Edinburgh to watch the rugby. “The first night was the Saturday night so the game hadn’t been played yet and I sing in French some times, and sang ‘La Vie en Rose’ and we did that, which is completely out of context to everything we were doing, but I knew they’d join in as it’s an anthem for them. So we had everyone up in the main music bar in Edinburgh, and everyone was singing.

“The next night, after Scotland had won, these French guys trooped into the bar, and you would pay to go and have a night out like that, it was such good fun!”

Rosie was positive about such a great response to her music. “There are a couple of [my songs] which are sing-along [ones] and there have been some really lovely moments with people joining in. I’ve also had people crying to a couple of songs, which is what they bring up for them.” Expanding on her live sound, Rosie talked about her three different-styles. “If they come and see me as Rosie Nimmo they can expect a concert that’s authentically me and my music, and some of it will be fun and some of it will be more thought-provoking. “If they come and see the duo that I’m in, with the guitarist who plays with me in every format as well, then they’ll hear some

covers done in a very original way, doing different things with them, and some original material.

“If they come and see the full blues band they get the rock-party experience!”

With live dates throughout the year including appearing at the first Pandorafest in Scotland it’s looking really positive for Rosie. And what are Rosie’s plans for the rest of the year? “I have this ambition that my music will get out to a really wide audience. I think it speaks to a lot of people. It’s onwards and upwards!”

CROSS GENRES Sian Cross on her exciting new single ‘Tell Anybody’.

Sian Cross has released her new single ‘Tell Anybody’ and we asked her to describe the record. “It’s drum and bass-fused, atmospheric, electronic pop.”

“I was a lot more about big band and live music, but then I started listening to James Blake which got me more into the electronic side of things. I’m always attracted to songs for the vocals and he’s such an amazing vocalist. The more I listened to him the more I got into the production side of his music and that spurred me to get onto that.” But what was the inspiration between the song? “Lyrics are a big part of what I do musically. I really try to a place a lot of importance on them. With this project in particular every song is a true story, so I sat down with each person and talked to them about whatever we are covering, about what they have been through. They’re all stories about triumphs over a hard time or a dark time and this one’s about a man who is struggling with his sexuality. Coming to terms with being a homosexual, coming to terms with himself, coming to terms with being able to tell his family, tell his friends, and gradually coming out the other side and feeling accepted for who he is. It takes you through the whole process and the journey.” The song is taken from the EP ‘Conscious’. Are they all based around stories?

“I think that’s why I named it Conscious. I think going through something traumatic in waking you up to how precious life is, and how precious you are, and getting to a place where you’re accepting yourself and accepting your story and letting it be part of you and not trying to hide it or allow it to hinder your life in any way.

KBPS

“There are a lot of stories on there. There’s one about an autistic boy. The song that actually inspired the whole project, which is about losing my dad to cancer and that song took on a weird power of its own and I got a lot of people contacting me about it either online or after gigs, telling me how it touched them and how it helped them with what they went through, and that spurred me on to talking to them in more detail and finding out more about their story to write about it.” Have these stories been cathartic? “Music has always been my therapy. I think music is kind of everyone’s therapy. If you’re sad you either want to listen to sad songs and wallow in it or you want to listen to something that’s going to lift you up. “I just wanted to give people the opportunity to be able to use it as therapy like I do and have their story written into a song. When writing the songs I tried to stay as true to their stories as possible whilst also leaving it open for interpretation so other people can also feel that the song is written about them in some way, with whatever they’re going through. I think there’s something quite powerful when you listen to a song and you literally feel like this song is written about the thing I’m going through right now. I’ve tried to keep it as open as possible for other people to interpret.”

Sian Cross has also done a live version available on her social media channels, in collaboration with Rhys Williams. “[Live] we have all sorts of technical equipment on stage with us. It’s nice to play about with the tracks and bring a different element to it when we do it live, and for this particular one we do tend to strip it back and knock out the drum and bass element and make it slower and more haunting.”

We spoke to Sian Cross just ahead of the video for the song being released. Stop motion animator Andy Biddle created a special video for it, and Sian was excited to have worked with him.

Sian is preparing to tour with ‘Son of Pitches’ later this year. “Vocals are what attracted me to music in the first place so going on tour with a choir who do everything with their voices is exciting for me. “Musically there will be lots of vocal effects. We try and create the biggest sound possible so it’s going to be pretty epic and I’m looking forward to it!” Looking to the future Sian has also been simultaneously working on a new EP which is currently being mixed and then plans to progress to an album at the end of 2017.

You can find out more about Sian on her online blog, where she regularly posts exciting new content. “My blog allows me to be as open and honest as I can be and talk about other things that interest me. I live on a boat now so a lot of it has been about the journeys with that, and all the things I’m learning.

KBPS

“[Also] because the songs have such big stories behind them, and as much as I want to keep them open for interpretation, it’s great to have a space where I can really divulge what it’s all about and where it came from, and allow that platform to tell the story about who the song is about.” And will living on a boat lead to some songs about it? “It’s genuinely one of the most inspiring homes I’ve ever lived in. I’m quite a water baby and a Pisces so it goes with the territory! Just being on the water and away from it all. You feel like you’re on holiday all the same, away from the thick of it in London!”

And any future dreams? “Next year I’d like it to be a big festival year. I’m a big festival goer and I’m desperate to get on some bigger stages. We’ve done a lot of festivals in the past, but I’d love to work up to some bigger stages.”

SOFT ROCK

The Soft Shades on their new album ‘Keeper of the Groove’ The Soft Shades have released their debut album ‘Keeper of the Groove’. But what is it like? “This album is post-rock, sometimes sounding like post-metal, and it’s a totally instrumental album with no vocals at all!”

Having previously been part of a band, a purely instrumental album was a new direction for Dimitriv, inspired by bands such as God Is An Astronaut. “I have heard a lot of nice post-rock and post-metal bands who have performed music without vocals so I tried that in this project.”

Highlighting ‘The Fall’ or ‘When This Day Comes’ as potential favourite tracks from the album, he confessed the choice depends on his mood. At the moment Soft Shades have no plans to tour the album so it’s purely an album experience, and the album is available both to buy and through Band Camp.

And what are the plans for the future? “I am thinking about new music. I also have some plans to co-operate with a local drummer. He’s a friend who plays in a band and I’d like to ask him to do some drum parts on a track.” fb.com/thesoftshades/ thesoftshades.bandcamp.com/

STAN AND DELIVER Stan Gemes on his new single and album ‘Call of the Ancient Wild’

Call of the Ancient Love by Stan Gemes is out on the 27th August. Stan Gemes was musical as a child but soon became part of the army then six years ago this all changed. “A friend in India asked me how my life was going. I said my life is great, the sun is shining, the rain is going, and people are smiling. She said to me, so why don’t you sing about it? I told her that wasn’t my plan. “So something happened to me after two or three months. The musicians came on board, the lyrics came to me, and I couldn’t stop the flow and making the music. Then the next thing that happened was to make a final version of ‘Call of the Ancient Love’ for a festival in an Olympic stadium in front of 70,000 people, and that’s how it all started! “Everything was a wonder. I was really intrigued by that experience and after that went deeper into making the album!”

The album came about from Stan Gemes travelling worldwide, visiting over sixty countries, including several ancient nations, his experiences with these being factored into the recording. A lot of these ancient nations have created a lot of music and contributed to the whole world, and one of these was India. I put some Sanskrit lyrics with English and Russia lyrics, with help from Germany, Los Angeles and more, plus Tim Palmer who has mixed for U2 and Pearl Jam, and a great singer from the UK. “I was fortunate to have lots of help from different angles!”

KBPS

Stan Gemes has performed in many places including Croatia and the Fifa headquarters, alongside India and Russia. “I really enjoyed it!” he told us. The instruments used on the record also reflected the places visited. “I used some sitars, alongside the main things like guitar, bass and drums.” The process of making the music was also important. “I tried to make it with natural rhythms, with every breath making joy! “If anyone sees me a concert they’ll experience a true celebration, a joyful celebration. They give out a very positive feeling, it’s very human music!”

‘Call of the Ancient Love’ has also been performed at festivals which have also been streamed live across the world. He describes his music as vibrant. “If you could see a rainbow. It’s like experiencing a musical rainbow!” And plans for the future? “I would love to have big shows and play in stadiums like U2 or Coldplay, and continue with that experience. I have joy and a celebration of life to share with my fans.

“Especially in this time when there’s so much fighting we need something to unite us!”

LOVER

We speak to Sarah from the band about their new single ‘We Are Stars’.

“It’s like arty-pop-rock. It’s a mixture of lots of music. There’s a story to it; I’m not going to say what the story is, as I think it’s personal to everyone, so make of it what you will!

want to throw away, and they found me on YouTube or on a band site and brought me in for a couple of auditions.

Lover have been hard at work on their album. “Listening to the album, all of our songs are very different. They’ve got the same kind of heavy bass, guitar and drums, but they’re all very original.”

Name was positive about the gigs including ones that they headlined, and one with Heaven 17. “We did the Station to Station tour, doing Glasgow on a giant stage and the fans were amazing. We did Liverpool, Islington... it was a really great experience playing alongside Earl Slick and Steve Norman.”

“It’s a different sound. I don’t think you’ve heard this sound before!”

With much of the album under wraps, the band are excited about how it’s been coming together. Returning to ‘We Are Stars’ there is a great retro-style video to go with it.

“It was fun. I think I’d only been with the band a couple of weeks and we were put in this room and told to bond and get together to do our thing. It was fun and really threw us into the mix. It was a good experience and one that we’ll all remember, doing it in this vintage hotel.” We asked how the band came together. “Some of the guys were in a previous band that broke up around Christmas time and they had lots of good material they didn’t

KBPS

“We’ve only been together for a couple of months and we’ve already done a tour so it’s been a bit of a whirlwind, but it’s been a good fit.”

Describing their live shows, she talked about their uniqueness with each one being different. “It’s about us being in a gang, and whether you want to join the gang or not.” What are your future hopes?

“I’ve got many! You’ve got to reach for the stars!”

FUTURE SOUNDS

We meet Future Generations on their brand new music! Future Generations are an alternative / Indie Pop/ Electronic band from New York and we spoke to lead singer Eddie Gore and the other members of the band Eric, Mike, Dylan and Devon as they travelled up to Washington DC. The band have a great new single out called ‘Thunder in the city’.

So how would you describe the single? It’s one of those songs that you listen to when you’re walking down the street and think, this is kind of narrating my walk! It’s just a feel good song, it’s an exciting song, it’s got a great hook. It’s all about the hook for us.

The song was written near the end of the album recording process; what was the inspiration behind the song? I was on a commute back from the city out to Long Island and it was about to storm, and it was just a kind of surreal journey. At the time I was very happy and thought [the storm]

was cool. I’d had a good day and I thought I’d write a song about the feeling I was having. What was the album like to record? The album was recorded over a long period of time. We recorded a lot of it in our dorm room at University. Then we played it back and a lot of songs we had, we added drums, synthesizers and other instruments in the studio. It was a longer, spread out process but when we were in the studio it was really nice as we had a positive mind-set and we were trying to be cohesive.

The album has some distinctive artwork. How did that come about? It was something the record came up with. There’s another band on the label called Decoration and I believe it was their singer’s good friend [called Nicole] and she did a couple of different ideas, and we were drawn to this one particular idea with the vibrant colours and the mix between new and retro.

You recently played a record launch party at the Mercury Lounge in New York; how did that go? It was great, so lit! We had a packed house and everybody was having a good time, especially us!

You have live dates coming up this month. How would you describe your live sound? It’s definitely fuller, more guitar and bassguitar heavy than the album. Like any album that’s brought to life is fuller and louder. We always say it has more of an edge and more energy to it live. It’s a different experience live, which is our goal. So how did you all meet? Four of us met at University. Myself [Eddie], Mike and Eric met in freshmen year in our dorm, and Dylan we met on Craigslist. We’re very thankful that he’s not murdered us yet. Shout out to not murdering people. And now we live together! Dylan: I have murdered but decided I’m going to ride with these guys.

Speaking of living arrangements, I believe you all share a flat together. What’s it

KBPS

like making music together and living together? It’s great. We’re always sharing music that’s inspiring us. We don’t have much time when we’re all in the apartment together but when we are we’re usually just hanging out and listening to music, and sharing with each other. Have you heard this, have you heard that. It’s been good to open each other up to different styles of music.

Do you have any big ambitions for the rest of 2016? To come across the pond, we want to come and play for you guys! We just want to play as many gigs as possible and build our audience by playing those shows. Some festivals next year would be nice. We just want to play as much music as possible, that’s really our end goal.

STARS ON THE RISE Gringo Star on their new music

Peter Furgiuele, Nicholas Furgiuele, Jonathon Bragg and Josh Longino make up band Gringo Star from Atlanta. With their album ‘The Sides And In Between’ out on 26th August via NevadoMusic we spoke to member Pete, cofounder of the band with his brother Nick, on the eve of the band heading out on a massive two-and-a-half month tour to talk about their new album. Their longest tour to date, Pete was excited about their upcoming time on the road, coming twenty years after first writing music with his brother as teenagers. Describing the band’s live sound as rock and roll with a bit of garage, he was keen to emphasise their diverse sound. “We try to incorporate more than one approach when we’re writing, so it’s a range of melodic rock and roll.”

Talking about the record Pete told us “It’s a continuation of where we’ve been going. We

had a slightly different approach this time as we did it in our own studio which we’ve been building for the last couple of years. Last year on tour I got really lucky. We randomly went into a gas station which was out west in casino country and on a whim I put twenty bucks into a slow machine and won almost $6000 on the jackpot! “We were heading to LA. We have a really good engineer friend out there who has worked on some of our past records. He helped me secure a couple of pieces of nice audio equipment and it really helped us solidify the studio and bring the quality up to a nice level. “That really helped with the overall sound of the record. We’ve done things on our own before and it’s been a little dirtier. This one is still dirty, but it’s a little bit cleaner!”

The band have also been working on new arrangements and involving their friends, incorporating instruments like a violin, saxophone and mandolin into the mix. “We tried to be a bit orchestral and mix up the sounds.”

Gringo Star’s latest album was recorded in a couple of months in their home studio, a process Pete described as fun. Featuring newish member Jonathon Bragg on drums, Pete saw the record as an evolution. “It’s progressed more. I feel confident, we all like it, and it’s our best album yet.” Their own studio has given the band the freedom needed to really work on the album. “Just having more time and less pressure to really get things how we want them [is great]. Sometimes when you’re in the studio and you have a limited amount of time [to record vocals] and people are waiting for you, you sometimes have to be like ‘that’s good enough’, but with this we could spend enough time to get vocal takes as we wanted them, which is kind of a luxury.”

With more time for experimentation and getting a more instrumental feel thanks to getting their friends involved, the studio seemed to have given the band more freedom on the record, and Pete, when we asked him to pick his highlights from the album, seemed genuinely happy with lots of the tracks, mentioning opener ‘Rotten’ alongside ‘Heading South’, ‘Get Closer’, ‘Knee Deep’, which included the violin, and ‘Going Home’. “For me that’s a really personal song. I get a good feeling from it. It’s called ‘Going Home’ but it actually feels like home to me, as it’s an honest song. “We tried to mix things up so no two songs were the same. It’s an approach we’ve always had, but we tried to make it so you’re listening to the same band but not the same song ten times. So each song has its own character.

KBPS

“We like a lot of styles. We like to incorporate a lot of different rhythms and arrangements, but there is a certain way we do things. I think there’s a common thread they all have; it’s pretty cohesive even though we mixed it up.”

Pete revealed a video for ‘Get Closer’ has recently been filmed and is currently being edited ready for release soon. He talked to us about the video, created by the same director who did the promotional video for ‘Rotten’. “He has great ideas. He brought with him a 16mm camera, and we did it all on real film, which we were really lucky to have the opportunity for. The video has quite a dreamy look to it, and he used some older Kodak film and there’s still grain left on it. It’s not an effect, it’s the natural film. It’s pretty cool and his editing has been great so far, with some techniques to make things look slow and frantic, but going with the music. It was done on a really sunny day and is a really sunny video!” And what plans do the band have for the future? “We really hope to come to Europe,” he told us, talking about early 2017. “Nevada Records have a branch in Europe so we’d really like to go and support the album there. And to keep pushing on this album. “With our manager and label combined I feel like we have our most cohesive team together to go out and tour and be the best supported we have been.”

‘The Sides And In Between’ by Gringo Star is out on 26th August via NevadoMusic. Find out more about them via their website.

GETTING YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP Exploring their new single ‘Living Right’ with Beauty Sleep’s Ryan McGroarty.

Beauty Sleep are a three-piece dream-pop band from Belfast, made up of Ryan McGroarty, Cheylene Murphy and Aimee Williamson. Starting up six months ago, they’ve just released their second single and we spoke to Ryan about ‘Living Right’ and how he would describe the track.

“It was probably the first song we’d written as a band and we’ve only been for six months so it’s all quite knew, so I guess it became the first song where we were discovering the sounds we were going to make and the type of band we’re going to be, so it’s a special song to us, and always will be.

“It’s just joyous and explosive, and so much fun to play. I’m glad people can finally hear it!” We wondered if this single was different to their first release as a band.

“We’ve only put out one other single at this point so we’re just trying to give everyone an overview stylistically of the different areas we’re into. When you’re a new band it feels like you can surprise people.

“We’re getting there now. People at some point don’t know what to expect so it’s a fun process!”

Though Ryan said they didn’t have any plans for a video for this release there are exciting future ideas coming up. “We have bigger plans for our next release. We did get some beautiful artwork from a young artist called Jack Coulter. He’s interpreted the song as an image which is really interesting. But no plans for a video at the moment.”

Future plan? “It’s fun putting out a single but at this point it would be fun putting something more substantial out there, something that runs together. I think it will be an EP, that’s a good way to start it. So we’re going to track that pretty soon. The songs are there. “After playing live, that changes you, so I guess we’ll be doing the recording in a more live-style, so I think that will come back again to it, and we’ll make sounds of microphones falling over and cymbals crashing, that kind of excitement is what we’re after!”

‘Beauty Right’ have so far done around a dozen live dates including recent festivals and they like to do different things to keep things fresh. “We have two different types of live set. We have one with a drummer, a friend of ours. He’s amazing and that excitement of playing small rooms where there’s loads of people, and it’s all happening and everyone’s moving, is really exciting, and we do like to do that.

“But we also have a more electronic set which has more computer elements to it, and has drums loops, and that’s a different feeling as well. I’m not sure which is best and sometimes we just call it depending on the show which one will be more suitable, so it’s good to give these two different sides and presenting the music in two very different ways.”

Gigs for the band coming up include Belfast on the 20th August. “It’s like a big barbecue show in the Queen’s Students’ Union with loads of local bands we’re friends with and it’s going to be like a twostage festival. If you’re in Belfast that day it’s going to be really fun!

KBPS

“When people only hear recordings they never know what to expect. It’s hard to picture a rock band, or what it is. Aimee who plays bass in the band is a visuals designer as well so there’s a really big light show usually with lots of moving elements. It’s coming together!”

Visual elements are a big part of the band and how they like to put themselves across. “We worked with this artist called Maisie Cousins on the artwork for ‘The Dark’, our first single, which had lots of luscious shots of running colours. I guess it was almost psychedelic imagery. We wanted to present a visual that whenever you saw it you’d have an idea of what the band sounded like and you’d make up your own image of what it’d be. “I think [music and visuals] is really important, and both complement each other, and it’s a big part of what we want to get across.”

And what are the future plans for the band? “A tour would be something to hope for. Personally it’s the main reason why I’m in a band as every time I’ve been before those experiences you have of going to places you’d never normally be, meeting people who’d never otherwise meet, and the stories that you get, are the things I treasure. It would be great to do these things with the band at this time, because it’s absolutely the most exciting part in lots of ways. “So get out there, get on some planes and boats and play to some un-expecting public somewhere!”

Find out more about the band on Facebook and check out their Soundcloud where you can hear various tracks and remixes, offering different interpretations on their sound.
