Louise Aubrie on her new pop-punk record Winter Delour Plus: music news! Seafret and Foxes reviewed! Our favourite new songs!
WELCOME TO KBPS! Hello and welcome to the sixth edition of KBPS! Gosh, I can’t believe it’s been over half a year since I first started the magazine and though each issue takes a lot of time to put together it’s always rewarding to see it when it does appear as a final piece!
In this issue we once more have our full complement of interviews. I spoke to Nina Nesbitt, one of my favourite contemporary singers, about her new single ‘Chewing Gum’. I chatted to Christina of Jonesey after a chance Tweet from her got me onto their single. I also speak to Skyler whose new Snoop Dogg featuring single has really hooked me in, and finally Louise Aubrie whose single ‘Winter Delour’ from her album Late 44 is a delight. Elsewhere in this issue we have the latest music news, another cracking column from Alistair and reviews of new material from Foxes and Seafret amongst others.
You’ll also find my highlights of the month in terms of new songs over the middle spread and the complete list of songs worth listening to over the past twelve months at the back. But before I leave you to flick through the latest edition I can’t finish the introduction without mentioning one of my radio heroes who passed away recently, Terry Wogan. One of my favourite presenters of all time, he was also a big champion of new music and several artists that I have heard and enjoyed over the last few years made their national radio debut on his show, and it was incredible to see the out-pouring of sadness from a lot of the acts that I follow on Facebook that had met him. So thank you Terry for many years of great radio and new acts, alongside such delights as Eurovision. You will be sadly missed. Philip Lickley Editor, KBPS

NINA’S RETURN
The incredible Nina Nesbitt is back with a brand new EP, single, look and sound. Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt burst into the public consciousness in 2013 with a series of infectious pop singles that appeared on her debut album ‘Peroxide’. ‘Stay Out’, ‘Selfies’ and Fleetwood Mac cover ‘Don’t Stop’ (which featured in a famous John Lewis advert) were just three great singles released by Nesbitt over 2013 and 2014 and now she’s back with a new image, new sound and new EP in the form of ‘Modern Love’, which includes lead single ‘Chewing Gum’ which has already enjoyed a hugely positive reaction online and lots of radio play. We spoke to Nina last
month ahead of the single’s release to talk about the EP.
“It’s kind of a departure from my old music in terms of the sound and lyrics. It’s representing a 21-year-old living in London. It’s just fun songs; I just wanted to make music that sounded a bit different, and Chewing Gum came out!” With a change in sound for Nina, there was always the danger the new direction might upset her older fans, but the online feedback has been very positive.
“I was really nervous about putting it out to be honest, because I thought it was going to be kind of 50/50 mixed opinions, because it was so different but everyone seems to have really embraced it and everyone seems to be pleasantly surprised, and lots of journalists and blogs have picked up on it which has been really good – I’m really pleased with the reaction.”
A video has also been released for the lead single, a fast-moving single-take-styled video showcasing the ever changing nature of relationships, cleverly connecting a series of locations and scenarios. “I wanted to make a video that kind of represented behind the scenes of single life, or dating life, and how people go from one to the other, and transient types of relationships. The video kind of took the lyrics and the meaning of the song and gave it visuals so I’m really happy with it. “It was filmed in a really small warehouse and they kept setting up new scenes and new rooms which was really cool!”
Here at KBPS we’ve been big fans of Nesbitt since the release of her second single ‘Stay Out’ but we’re also fans of her new style. Nina explained that her new style is definitely poppier, with more electronic elements woven into the music. “It’s just a bit more grown up and representing someone living in London, and I wanted the sound to be more energetic and exciting!”
Alongside a new sound, Nina, who has previously done modelling work, has also had a change in style of photography as shown in the artwork for the EP, created through a chance encounter with her
KBPS
favourite photographer who happened to be in London at the time. “He shot some of my absolutely idols like Taylor Swift and Courtney Love, people like that, and for some reason I ended up in the studio and he agreed to take some photos for me and they ended up being the artwork, and it was such a cool thing to do. I wanted to choose something that represented the new music a bit better.”
As well as creating her own music Nina Nesbitt also writes for other artists and has got involved in the production side as well. This has helped her in the creation of her own music too. “Learning how to produce has been really useful because when I write songs I always hear the production and sounds in my head but I’ve not always known how to put that onto a record. Just sitting at my computer, pressing buttons and learning how to do it has been really helpful. I definitely want to do more of that.”
Nina wrapped up January with a series of sold-out live dates in London, Glasgow and Manchester and we spoke to her ahead of weekend-long rehearsals for those events. She was keen to express her excitement for the gigs but also her gratefulness at fans being patient for new music and how they had sold out the dates “immensely fast”. Nina hopes to do more in 2016 to follow these dates up.
“I’m hoping to put out another single before the Summer and play lots of festivals and then try and get the album out Autumn time and then another tour.” With Nina keen to interact with her fans on social networks, it’s clear to see she has a

passion to keep her fans involved.
“Being online a lot helps because you can find out a lot about your fans through their Twitter page. I can see how they’re reacting to the music which is really handy. It’s just a good way to keep in touch with people who have been there from the beginning.” January saw her signing 1000 EPs for her fans too.
“It was amazing, I was so grateful that people went ahead and ordered them without hearing the music. It’s been pretty crazy and it took quite a long time to sign them all!”

Don’t Stop
Her cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic is given an indie makeover and we love it!
2016 should be an incredible year for Nina Nesbitt with her aim of putting another album out.
“[I’m going to make] it something I’m really proud of. I’ve got loads of song ideas, I’m still writing at the moment. The album’s not finished yet. My life’s quite dramatic, so songs just keep coming which is quite handy!” We couldn’t, of course, finish off the interview without a cheeky reference to her single, and asking her what her choice of favourite chewing gum flavour is.

First cut ‘Body Talk’ follows and again ticks all the boxes for a poppy, singable hit with Allen’s vocals delightfully uptempo and perky.
Louisa Allen, known by her stage name of Foxes, released one of my favourite albums of 2014. ‘Glorious’ included a clutch of brilliant pop singles such as ‘Let Go For Tonight’ and ‘Holding Onto Heaven’ alongside a beautiful acoustic live version of her song with Zedd, ‘Clarity’. Fast forward two years, in which Foxes has been working on the follow-up when she wasn’t joining the Doctor on board a space train to perform a Queen cover, and Allen is back with her sophomore album, one that is every bit as fun and accomplished as her first, including some more fun, catchy pop ditties.
‘All I Need’ kicks off with a short, practicallyinstrumental, opening with its perky, classical style really setting the mood before it bursts into the drum-pounding second single ‘Better Love’ co-written and featuring guest vocals from Bastille’s Dan Smith, whose recognisably gruffer sound compliments hers perfectly. Sounding like a spin-off of ‘Holding Onto Heaven’, this is every bit as great and radio friendly as anything off her debut release, the split between drum-heavy verses and soaring choruses pronounced but very listenable.
KBPS
Entering fresh material territory and ‘Cruel’ is a dancier, more clubby affair with its ‘bound to you’ riff. It has a different feel to the album opener whilst still keeping things poppy, and the more urban, slightly mystical eastern sound suits her voice. ‘If You Leave Me Now’, continuing to showcase the funky production effects, is a slower, balladic number that is not quite as memorable as the early tracks but the change of pace is welcome.
Foxes’ most recent single ‘Amazing’ comes next and is the album’s big number, a pounding, unashamedly cheesy, pop number with a huge chorus and could quite possibly by her best number yet, its singable chorus and positive vibe a delight. ‘Devil Side’, track seven, brings the strings to the fore again with a more traditional sounding ballad, the lyrics given room to breathe. ‘Feet Don’t Fail Me Now’, with its occasional nods to Adele’s classic ‘Rolling In The Deep’ thanks to its backing riff is a tempo-shifting number that stands out in this part on the album.
Coming in at track nine, ‘Wicked Love’ is surely contender for the fourth single. Though the title might seem like the album is becoming a collection of songs about something love, it proves to suit the style, its repetitive chorus reaping rewards in terms of memorability. With lighter production touches than earlier moments on the album, this is one of my personal favourites on the record, Foxes’ voice cracking at times with emotion, adding to the emotions. Throw in a nicely timed breakdown and this short track proves to be a stand out.

‘Scar’, again, goes into quieter territory but is still one that doesn’t need a skip. Penultimate track ‘Money’ uses the repetition trick again as you’d expect from a pop album but this is again a foot-tapping catchy number. Album closer ‘On My Way’ whips out the piano for a more sentimental closer, in a similar vein to the live cover of ‘Clarity’ tying things up nicely. For those, like me, who slapped a few extra pounds down for the deluxe version get a very generous four bonus tracks. ‘Shoot Me Down’, with its classical opening, is a more disco-influenced, fast-tempoed number. ‘Lose My Cool’ my favourite of the bonuses is again quite pacey, which continues with ‘All I Need’, an average track which cements the feeling that this trio are definitely bonus tracks, albeit ones still worth listening to. For deluxe owners we get a reprise of main album opener ‘Rise Up’, basically the opening track with two minutes of lyrics, in a very good track that makes you wonder why it isn’t the final track on the main album as a satisfying reprise. Overall fans of poppy, uptempo and radio friendly albums will relish this record, and it follows up - and improves - on her debut nicely. With some great singles taken from it, it’s not serious, clever or revolutionary, but is a catchy joy to listen to. (7/10)

Keeping Up With The Jonesey
We speak to Christina from the newest name in country music
Christina and Paul Jones make up California-based country duo Jonesey who have started breaking through in 2016 with a live mash-up of Taylor Swift’s ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ and Sam Hunt’s ‘Break Up In A Small Town. We spoke to Christina Jones from the band following her messaging us with their new video of the mash-up and we asked her how this adaptation came about. “I just remember hearing the Sam Hunt song on the radio when it first came out, and I heard the similarity immediately. During that chorus they have a really similar breakdown and the beat drop, and I instantly heard the Taylor Swift song, and I said to my brother those two songs would go really great together. “I’m a big fan of both artists because I do write country primarily and I love both Taylor and Sam. My brother and I needed to do a cover for our shows, and it fits perfectly into our demographic and repertoire of our set-list, so we figured it would be really fun. I just love mash-ups in general, I think they’re really cool, so I wanted to do our own.” Sam Hunt is a country artist who is breaking through in the UK now, and featured in our Sound of 2016 in the last edition. We asked whether he was bigger in the US.
“I think he’s been around a bit longer, a year or more or so over here. The song that we did, ‘Break Up in a Small Town’, has been making the charts in the past two months, so that single in particular is popular right now, but Sam Hunt has been around for over a year.”
KBPS
Alongside their mash-up, Jonesey are keen to establish their own music, a delightful mixture of country, pop and rock.
“We do definitely gear more towards country. We write a lot about relationships; I’m very personal in my song writing, give a lot of details, most particularly about relationships. They’ve definitely got a youthful vibe as I’m 23 and actually do have a song called 23, and have quite an anthemic song about what I’m going through now. Youthful, but overall my music is pretty insightful, I do have a big background in poetry, so I get a lot from that.”
Christina Jones studied poetry at the University of Southern California and was keen to mention her work there and how it has influenced their music. “It’s a big school here, probably the biggest. I did poetry there, and has definitely been the biggest influence in my song writing because studying the classics, I’ve learnt from the best, and I’m really humbled to learn from people like that. I’ve definitely taken what I’ve learnt in terms of form, detail and imagery; I incorporate all those devices into my songwriting, and it’s helped me think outside the box because poetry is a really framed art form. “You don’t have to be correct, you don’t have to be right, you get to be artistic and take risks and that definitely reflects in my own songwriting. I really do like to challenge the norm and form of songs, and it really helps to take an academic approach to writing to writing, because although song-writing is art and creative I think you can be intellectual about it as well, so I like to learn the craft of songwriting, and I studied that too at UCLA, and helped me master the craft.” Paul and Christina are brother and sister and both have a long background in music.

“We had actually been working together since we were about 13 or 14 and we started in church. I used to sing in church and he’d play the bass guitar, and that was our first experience performing together and we did it for quite a few years, and we’re back doing that again.
“We hadn’t considered doing it on our own until about a year ago. My brother has been on tour with multiple artists, so Paul has been really serious with music, and he was really ready to do his own thing, and I had graduated from college and loved creative writing and poetry, and had this musical background, and it would be perfect if we teamed up, and it was great timing and we were both in the right time and place in our lives. “I think we’re so lucky as we’re best friends and super close in age – I’m 23, he’s 25 – and we grew up really close, sharing friends, so it just feels like hanging
KBPS
out working together, especially when we’re on stage – it’s the best feeling – I can laugh and smile and know that’s my brother backing me up.
“It’s been great, and as far as writing goes, another benefit is as we’re related we never stay mad at each other and have the freedom and ability to say what we want to each other and criticise, knowing they’re still going to love us! If one of us has a bad idea we don’t have to tip-toe around it, whereas with a stranger you might have to put them down easily. We aren’t walking on egg shells, we can be open and honest when we’re writing!” Having started working together last year, 2016 will obviously be a big one for the pair.
“My dream is to be on the radio and I think my brother and I have been making really good strides in terms of our song-writing and pushing content. We’ve been taking all the right steps so far that are putting us closer on that
The music magazine
14
path, and that is my dream and my goal. I’ve been setting the bar high but that’s what I want, whether it’s Jonesey’s original material on the radio or another artist singing a song we wrote, that’s where I want to ideally be by the end of 2016, but in the meantime we’re trying to get a good network, and that’s why we keep posting these videos.
“We hopefully will get the right people on our team as far as producers go, and managers etc, and the radio would be the dream and I’m pretty confident we’ll get there. We’re not going to slow down any time soon and we’re really motivated right now and having so much fun!”
Alongside the mash-up Jonesey have recorded performances of two songs on their Facebook page. Christina took us through the songs. “The first one is ‘You Can’t Love’, the first thing we ever put out public, and it got about 5000 views in one day which we were absolutely shocked by, and it’s double that now. It’s a colourful ballad, a little intense, about jealousy and trust issues, and at the time I wrote that I was experiencing that in a relationship and I’d been looking for inspiration or a song about that to highlight that, but I couldn’t really find anything that captured what I was going through so I figured I’d just write it myself! “‘Nothing Happens Twice’ is almost the opposite: a positive, upbeat love song. It’s a warm ballad about
KBPS
chance and fate and the words talk about how nothing happens twice and that you meet one person and fate has it that the circumstances line up perfectly, and how you’ll never find anything like it again. I actually was inspired by a poem for that one.” Both songs are available on their Facebook page, where the pair interact with their fans, and they are receiving lots of interest from UK fans as country music becomes increasingly popular here thanks to artists like the Shires and Ward Thomas. I asked Christina why she thinks this is the case.
EPs in my Inbox
This two track is a fun listen, with a very catchy first track ‘Simple’ delivered by the light, poppy vocals of the lead singer. Even better is the REM and Beatlesesque Mr. Curry’s Troubles which namechecks the NSA amongst its jaunty, semipolitical messages.
“I think it’s for its honesty and its genuine lyrics, and I think people can emotionally connect to the words. Country songs are like ministories and that’s why I like writing country songs, as I feel like it’s story time, and people can really connect to those lyrics, and there’s lots more depth. Of course there are very pop-like country songs, but the majority have more depth than The Limiter your average pop-dance single, and This raw sounding lo-fi indie number people can see a genuine song.” So what’s next in terms of mashups for Jonesey?
“It’s difficult to pick one! We will be doing a mash-up or a medley of some country songs – Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Sarah Evans, and we’re going to put that out really soon!”
is subtle in its sound but its indie-pop vibes will win you over, even if it’s perhaps a little too downbeat and simple for its own good.

‘Wildfire’, with its lyrical imagery of flames, is one of my personal favourite tracks, its building drums and atmosphere slowly licking up like the fire of the title. ‘Breathe’ again continues the gentle encouragement of music, whilst track five ‘Oceans’ proves to be the centerpiece of the record, their most famous number delivering in both emotional delivery and lyrical deliciousness, the record tear-jerking in its style.
Fearing starting this review sounding like a musical hipster, I’ve had the pleasure to be able to follow Seafret for a year or so now, having seen them live three times, firstly in my place of work as part of a University tour then down the road in Wakefield and finally most recently at one of their free gigs to promote the album, where they performed to a buzzing crowd in a converted old building. Having signed to Sony last year duo Jack Sedman and Harry Draper have just released their debut album ‘Tell Me It’s Real’ and it’s hard to think of a way they could have created a debut album that would be more listenable. Packed with sea analogies, titles and metaphors, it’s a gentle, subdued piece for the most part, but a beautiful LP nonetheless. Opener ‘Missing’ is the first chance for the duo to showcase their style of thoughtprovoking lyrics, emotive vocal delivery and warm guitars, and they do all three with aplomb. ‘Give Me Something’, with its subtle morse code production effect, is a quiet affair but one that will tease you through the record with its desire to keep things simple.
KBPS
Continuing onto ‘Over’, a more energetic track by the band’s standards but one that stands out for me in the top songs of the album, and then onto the album’s title track. which is a less memorable affair.
‘Be There’ thankfully lifts the album up again, arguably the best number on the album, its energy and powerful chorus really making it stand out on the album. ‘Beauty on the Breeze’ continues the sea theme of the album, naturally quite appropriately, before ‘Atlantis’ with its crashing wave opening cements itself as another of the best tracks on the album thanks to its shaky, emotive, memorable chorus.
Wrapping up the album are ‘Skimming Stones’, its production effects on the vocals making this a refreshing shift and one of my favourites thanks to its chorus; ‘There’s a Light’, once more employing a different start and actually becoming the most different song on the piece; and closer ‘To The Sea’, an acoustic-style number that ties things up slowly and satisfyingly, Rosie Carney’s guest vocals beautifully matched.
For deluxe fans there is ‘Out of Nowhere’ and ‘Overtime’, two worthy additional tracks especially the latter which should have been on the main album. The extended version

wraps up with a delightful live version of ‘Oceans’. Sadly for me, though, no appearance for their earlier EP-featuring ‘Play With Guns’, one of their best tracks which should have appeared somewhere here.
gentle, well-written and sung collection of introspective ballads you can’t go far wrong than this. (6/10)
‘Tell Me It’s Real’ is the perfect album for the final cold days of Winter, the perfect soundtrack to a chilly night. Put on the fire, grab a mug of tea and enjoy the warming vocals and music of this duo. It has its moments where it’s a little too subdued and quiet for its own good but it’s a beautiful listen and a very, very strong debut. (7.5/10)
Hull-based singer-songwriter Jack Conman’s new six-track EP ‘Euphoria Springs’ is, like Seafret’s album, a quieter, more introspective piece. Opening with the surprisingly catchy, drum-driven ‘Heroin Strings’ with its memorable riff, we get ‘Suppress the Rest’, a gentle track in a similar style, and ‘Misty Central’, the best track on the EP with its memorable chorus, gently flowing verses and pleasing production sweeps and swishes and guitar-drumming. The style of tracks continue through ‘I Feel I’m Ageing’, ‘Bleed All My Blood’ and ‘As We Lay’, and it does feel a little samey towards the end, but as a
KBPS
Stefano Donato and Oliviero Fella make up The Step and they’ve released this five-track EP. Opening with ‘Horizon’ which serves as a one-minute extended opening for the first track proper (‘Something More’), the ‘Gravity’ EP is a delightful collection of songs with the aforementioned ‘Something More’ the pick of the pops, the Italian-infused lead vocals lending the songs a smooth sound. With an intriguing build up to chorus though verses, ‘Something More’ is a great listen.
Five-minute long follow-up ‘Gravity’ and almost as lengthy ‘Black Magic’ don’t have quite the same, er, magic as that first track but are smooth and pleasing listens, but it’s closer ‘Let It Go Friends’ that gives the EP a more rewarding finish, capturing the spirit of ‘Something More’ again. With some distinctive vocals and smooth music, this is an EP well worth checking out. Plus a lyrical reference to Star Wars is always welcome! (6.5/10)

ALISTAIR PROUDMAN Anselmo - A One-Off or Wider Problem? Metal is never far from controversial headlines, with its longstanding reputations as satanic and evil, and the actions of exPantera vocalist Phil Anselmo has thrown it back into the spotlight.
With Anselmo’s cry of white power accompanied by a Nazi salute, metals decriers have started to suggest the presence of a race problem within the genre, focusing particularly on the white supremacist wing of (ironically) black metal. While there can be no denying the presence of unsavoury characters in and around the metal community, to suggest there is a race problem is to miss the point entirely – people like Anselmo are an inevitable part of any community (except Coldplay fans, as that band is so relentlessly dull that there can be no talking points about them at all), but a tiny minority in metal as in most things.
Metal has long been the voice of the outcast, the ones willing to push at the boundaries, but it’d take a remarkable lack of perception to not notice that for the most part the use of fascist and racist imagery, and touching on subjects like the actions of the Nazis (Angel of Death – Slayer), child abuse (Don’t Let Daddy Kiss Me – Motorhead) and anti-abortion activists (Get Your Gunn – Marilyn Manson) were not sympathetic to the ideals of their subjects and instead were written to cast light on these, to subvert their imagery to make a point and confront the mindsets behind them.

The image isn’t helped by fundamental misunderstandings of the music demonstrated by the likes of Leeds Beckett, who last October presented a suggestion that folk metal (a subgenre with an emphasis on the mythology and history of pre-Christian Europe) is racist and sexist as it harkens to a time where white male Europeans were superior. This makes the fatal assumption that the focus is on the message rather than the story – far from the case. The use of Viking imagery and tales in particular is not, as the researcher suggests, about showing men how to be men and women how to know their place (not least since women were no small players in Nordic paganism), but about the sagas, the retelling of stories, not the promotion of a specific lifestyle. Does metal have a race problem though? No. While yes, there are sections of it that are lousy with white extremists, and while the stereotypical metal fan is a long-haired white twenty-something male, the crowds are rather more diverse than that. While there are undoubtable elements of racism, this mirrors normal society – the arts have always lead the way in societal change, and for that to continue people need to start seeing the wood for the trees. While outbursts like that of Anselmo demonstrate that work is not yet done, to jump straight to branding an entire community as racist is to throw the baby out with the bath water.

On Fire We speak to new singing sensation Skyler on her new single with Snoop Dogg, her Snapchat addiction, whether you should work with Children and Animals and how much she likes Brooklyn Beckham...
Sixteen year-old actress, singer and songwriter Skyler Chissell has burst onto the music scene with her hot new single ‘Fire’ which sees her collaborate with Snoop Dogg on the huge track and sundrenched video. We managed to speak to Skyler about her single as she returned to the UK for a promotional tour, catching her as she travelled around the country including London and Brighton, and even sunny Bournemouth to catch up with family. We asked how she was finding her time back in the UK. “I’m definitely loving being back in England now, seeing all the people I haven’t seen in years. I don’t come back here a lot. I definitely love being in England; I love California: of course the weather is beautiful and it’s always hot and you can be at your beach, but here is where my family is, so it’s definitely England where my heart belongs!”
Her new single is ‘Fire’ and is a favourite of ours at the moment at KBPS. Skyler was also very positive about the record. “It’s just really fun, something you can listen to with your friends, in the car, at a party, something that makes you smile and happy, and help you realise that life is just one big fun party and you don’t need other people to judge you.” We were keen to know how she secured the collaboration with Snoop Dogg on the record, and it was through a producer that was in touch with the famous rapper, singer and producer. “We went into the studio to record some covers and he told me that he liked my voice and wanted to work on some originals, so we did two originals including ‘Fire’. He said he wanted to see

if any of his friends would come and join me on the track as he really liked the song. He called us a couple of days later and told us that Snoop Dogg wanted to be on the track, so it was definitely an exciting time and I’m lucky to have the producer that I do.” Fire was originally a song with two verses performed by Skyler but one verse was dropped to include the Snoop Dogg-written rap which appears on the main version of the record. Skyler revealed their collaboration was a good experience. “It was amazing, he’s very professional but very fun at the same time. He was giving me a lot of great advice about the business and how to deal with everything.” Snoop Dogg also appears alongside Skyler in the video for the record which mixes open-top driving in sunny California and gritty urban indoor scenes.
“I loved making that. Everyone in the video are really close friends of mine so it was great to be with them and of course Snoop Dogg was on set with us which is amazing as he’s such a nice guy. It’s so funny – whenever the cameras weren’t on and they were changing things, he’d be sat there dancing and singing and having fun, messy around, and giving advice. It was great to have a mentor like him.”
As well as enjoying her blossoming music career Skyler continues to find spare time to do a lot of other things alongside keeping in touch with friends. “I love animals and children, love helping them. Me and my friends do a lot of volunteering work with animals; we work at the animal shelter and take care of all the animals, and help people adopt new ones. Growing up I actually volunteered on a farm which had a

summer camp. I’d take of the kids and teach them how to take care of the animals as well, which was a lot of fun. I love singing and music with my friends mostly; we’ll write new songs together, play guitar, turn on music, dance to it. It’s definitely a lot to do with friends and family.” Skyler has had an interest in music for years, starting when she was three, getting inspiration for her singer father. “I used to sing with him on stage and then when I was ten I decided I wanted to move to California to do it for the rest of my life and that’s where I am now!”
weird as sometimes when you hear a song enough it gets a little boring, especially At sixteen Skyler is naturally fully up with social when you have to sing a lot, but these ones don’t get old to me. I love to hear songs media and loves interacting with her fans. that make me happy and these songs are definitely like that.” “It’s been amazing. I’m always on social media. Whenever I’m bored I’ll sit on my phone for hours. I think I’ve got a Snapchat addiction but Following this EP Skyler hopes to have an it’s kind of sad! I love interacting with everyone album out by the end of the year alongside other plans. “Maybe I’ll be on a little tour, – all the Snapchats of everyone enjoying the and maybe even a date with Brookyln song; people posting on Twitter about how Beckham! The brother of a close friend much they love it. They want to meet me; it’s of my mum actually lives near Brooklyn amazing that I have such an impact on other people to make them happy who love what I’m Beckham in California. doing as much as I love it!” “Right now I’m working more on the music and the songs from the album and to go out With ‘Fire’ now getting lots of traction online I to perform them, and the [new] music video, asked if she was working on new music. but I’m hoping soon we’ll have more clear “I have an EP hopefully coming out by the end of plans on what the future holds! this month! It features ‘Fire’, a remix of ‘Fire’ and three brand new songs. But what is her big hope for the They are really fun. There is a lot of music you year? can dance to and have fun with. One of my favourite songs, which we’re filming a music video for when I get back to California, so that’s “To make people happy with my music and be able to go and see everyone I have something to look forward to – I can’t wait for inspired with what I do!” that! “They’re really good songs; I love them, I love singing them, I love listening to them, which is

Winter is Coming We speak to Louise Aubrie about her single Winter Delour, her inspirations and her time recording at Abbey Road
Louise Aubrie is a London-born musician who can be found both there and in New York, bringing her indie-punk songs to live audiences and further afield, back with a new single ‘Winter Delour’ from her third album ‘Late 44’.
Her new single is best described by Aubrie in her one words. “[It’s] kind of an upbeat, poppy, punky guitar track written about Hurricane Sandy we had three years ago when I lived in New York and I was living through that and surviving that and it’s an upbeat track talking about coming back to life after that experience.” Louise Aubrie specialises in songs based around relationships with other people but built around catchy, punky melodies. “Not to resort to cliché, it’s more about relationships. That song was about being with somebody and surviving an experience like that. My style is normally about key relationships in my life which is what fuels the world really!
“[Punk is] something I’m very influenced by; kind of indie-pop, guitar-pop is what I’d call it, but I’m influenced by that 1970s punk and I really like that and I brought a bit more of that to this record.”
Aubrie splits her time between London and New York and the American city has certainly had an influence on her sound. “I was living out there for seven or eight years and I was lucky to be out there. What really drew me to it was those brilliant bands of the late seventies like Blondie, the New York Dolls and the Ramones, Television, Talking Head, all of those guys. I really loved that sound and tried to reach back. It’s a long time ago before my time but I really enjoy that kind of sound. New York did shape it a lot as it’s got such energy about it.
KBPS
“London does too, which is where I’m from, but there’s that real 24-hour culture going on there and it gives you quite a lot of energy writing wise.” There is also a video online for ‘Winter Delour’ with a retro look to it, and I picked up some Blondie-stylings in its presentation and I was keen to ask Aubrie if that was intentional. “Not really, but it was a bit gritty, down in the lower east side of New York and that’s where these guys were down by CBGBs and I wanted to hark back to that. To get anything like that into my music makes me happy.”
It was also a fun video to make. “There are lots of things you need to do these days besides just making music. I enjoyed it, and getting involved in editing, so yes it was a good time.” Louise recorded for her most recent album ‘Late 44’ partially in the famous Abbey Road and I asked her about her experiences recording at such a venue.
“It was amazing as you could imagine. Just walking in there – we were in studio two which is the big famous one where the Beatles did their recording along with everyone else, so it does inspire you. The people who work there are just total pros; nothing is too much trouble, and everything can get done, and you get access to whatever you could possibly want. It’s just steeped with history and it might sound a bit of a cliché but you really do get that sense that this is the place, and I was really lucky to do that.” “Late 44’ is her latest album and I was keen to get a feeling for its sound.
“It’s a similar theme. I was feeling quite buoyant and vivacious going into writing it so I wanted to keep it light and poppy. It’s basically guitar-driven indie-pop-rock and covering a bunch of things around relationships and my
The music magazine
25
experiences out there. I hope it’s a pretty upbeat and pretty rocking record.” ‘Late 44’ comes after two other albums by Aubrie.
“Boz Boorer, Morrisey’s MD and cowriter, produced those records for me. I think your first record brings all your experiences that you’ve had writing music for many years, until you actually go into a recording studio. I think the first album – Fingers Crossed – was a bit more eclectic. There was definitely some punky stuff on there but there was some ballads on there and some more acoustic work, and as you work through where you want to focus [it changes]. My second record – Time Honoured Alibi – was a bit harder. I think it’s more vibrant, punky-pop and that’s where I’m trying to focus.”
Louise Aubrie has recently returned to performing live and I spoke to her not long after an energetic gig at London’s Dublin Castle. “We headlined [there and it was]
KBPS
a great venue, great room, really good packed crowd. I really enjoyed that one and was the first one I’ve done back in London for a long time having come back from the states. I really enjoyed it!” Aubrie, who splits her time between the UK and New York told me that gigging on both sides of the pond is similar in terms of venue size and vibe and it’s something she’s passionate about. “My key focus is to play a lot of live dates, get on the road and play as much as possible!” And what are her other hopes for the year?
“For me it is to play as much as I can, really support this record. I’m really proud of the people I’ve worked with and the experience of doing it. When we get to the end of the year I hope we can look back and say we’ve done loads of gigs, we’ve really enjoyed it and people have responded to the music!” You can find out more about Louise Aubrie at facebook.com/louiseaubriemusic
