WELCOME TO KBPS! Hello and welcome to the fifth edition of KBPS! It may well be a little late into January to still be wishing you a happy new year but I’m going to do so anyway.
Welcome to the latest edition of KBPS where there are two interviews with a pair of great acts, the poppy Jazz Mino and the more rnb-tinged LewRey, acts that have both got new singles out at the beginning of 2016 but also have some great songs and live performances already under their belts. As well as those we have also assembled our favourite potential acts who we think will do well this year, alongside our selection of the best music we’ve currently been listening to.
There are also some of the latest news stories and, of course, two brand new columns from our regular writers Liam and Alistair. So without any more waffle from me, let’s get on with the latest edition of KBPS... Philip Lickley Editor, KBPS

Phil’s Column - A Tale of Two David’s Sometimes you’re never too sure if things on the internet are genuine or not.
After the earlier series of tweets from Kanye West fans thinking he’d discovered a new artist in Paul McCartney after they collaborated together with Rihanna on ‘FourFiveSeconds’ we now get new ones on a similar theme in the wake of the sad passing of David Bowie, confusing the musical pioneer with creator of 2015 number one song ‘House Every Weekend’ David Zowie. With some caution that they may well have been joking and the joke was taking as fact, if true does it actually show that some modern music consumers aren’t familiar with even some of the bigger names of the musical past, even when the history of music is not, comparatively, that huge. You could understand some not knowing some obscure artists from the sixties or earlier, but David Bowie is surely up there with the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Madonna as artists that are known in popular culture as well as to the music fans? Maybe we should start something new in KBPS and look back at older artists to bring them to a new generation of music buyers? Here’s thinking...

ALL THAT JAZZ After a busy last year Jazz Mino is back with a brand new single and a video that may just get Twitter talking... Jazz Mino is a London-based artist who broke through in Spring 2015 with her catchy single ‘Blue Eyes’. Originally from Bristol, Jazz Mino’s comic book-fashion sense and quirky hits have cemented her as one of the best up-and-coming artists to look out for and having spent the rest of 2015 performing live and working on new songs in the studio she is back with the bouncy hit ‘Superwoman’, out in February. With a live residency, singles such as ‘The Dorkiness in You’ previously doing well and plenty of awards under her belt, alongside prestigious live sets at various events around the capital, it’s difficult not to be amazed by how much Jazz Mino has achieved in such a short time. Here at KBPS we caught up with the singer to find out how last year was for her and also what her plans are for this New Year.
Following on from a busy Christmas with the launch of an EP and brand new covers on her YouTube page, including her take on Amy Winehouse’s hit ‘Back to Black’ and some more festively themed numbers, Jazz Mino is now concentrating on promoting her new single ‘Superwoman’ following a short break with her family in Somerset before getting back to her musical passion quickly in the New Year, where it’s been “kind of all go, go, go really!”
“Compared to Blue Eyes, [Superwoman] is a little bit more dancy, poppy [and] upbeat and it’s about my take on people who expect so much of you [as] friends and they kind of take all they can emotionally from you and then when you need them they’re not there for you. “I have some good friends so that’s not an issue but I’ve had experiences in the past where that’s happened.”
Jazz Mino revealed that the inspiration for her music comes from real-life experiences in the most part. “I tend to base them on… an experience that I’ve had or someone close to me has had and then exaggerate it a little bit more!” Though the song is incredibly catchy and a favourite of ours here at KBPS, it’s probably the video that will get the most written about it initially. Set in a living room, four friends join Jazz Mino for a dinner party they’ll never forget. Though lacking the narration of Dave Lamb, it could well be like a ‘Come Done With Me’
KBPS
show from Hell, and Jazz Mino’s warnings on social networks not to watch it whilst eating are well placed!
“Zig Zag Zig Productions came up with the concept. I just thought, it was so different to something I would have thought of or done. I think of lot of people were expecting me to release some kind of happy, colourful video, similar to Blue Eyes. “It’s [actually] quite dark and there’s been quite a mixed reaction to it. Some people love it because they really weren’t expecting it, then other people aren’t loving it as much.” The video is certainly a talking point on Twitter and could well go viral thanks to its quirky nature and the talking point of the visuals.
“It was fun to do the acting, and it was great getting to know all the actors in the video. It was a great day. What you see was really there, so it was quite grim, and the smell of the liver where it comes out of the

meatloaf was particularly [bad] by the end of the day!
“They hired this girl to create all of the food which was disgusting but amazing at the same time.
“I think quite a few people have been sharing it saying “look at this horrible video”. It’s had a great amount of views and it’s only been up for a week, so I’m really happy about that!”
Jazz Mino’s latest single follows a very busy 2015 for her. Over the summer she took part in some special gigs, including one to the Mayor of London and in front of television chefs the Hairy Bikers, as well as a support slot for Lianne La Havas, Jazz Mino’s highlight of the year. Jazz Mino has also supported KBPS favourites Lucy Rose and the Noisettes, based around performances at the BUPA Feel Great Britain Festival, London Music Awards, How The Light Gets In Festival and at venues such as the famous hotel Claridges. “[2015] was great. I played lots of lots of live gigs, and I was busking on the South Bank a lot and it was really warm which was lovely. [The year was] just performing and playing with my band and writing lots of new songs. “It was a really great year, and I’m hoping 2016 is going to be even better!”
Jazz Mino is a very keen busker, delivering her music to audiences who might not usually get to hear her.
“I recently got a London Underground busking licence music which is pretty cool IThe don’t have to

freeze while I’m busking! So that’s a new experience.”
But as well as busking Jazz Mino also does regular, more traditional, gigs.
“I’ve had a bit of a change of band set-up. I used to do [live gigs with] myself with the ukulele, plus cellist, violinist, drums and bass but now it’s just the three of us this year, so we’ll see how this goes!”
Jazz Mino had come fresh from rehearsals for her gig at The Islington in London for the interview, and preparations for that were going well. I was also keen to ask her what else was coming up this year and whether plans included an album. “Not as yet”, was her reply.
“[That video] was really, really fun to make. I hope to do more videos with those guys. Most of the videos I did last year were solo, and it’s so much more fun with the three us performing, and we all get on so well!” Future events for Jazz Mino include the Take 2 Launch Party, Sainsbury’s Sports Relief Games and the Purbeck Valley Folk Festival, but what is her big ambition after the single release?
“It’s always going to be the same, [to] play at Glastonbury! [Glastonbury is] absolutely amazing!” You can find out more about Jazz Mino, and her new single, at jazzmino.com.
“I’m recording a few songs now so I’ll see how they come out, and whether any will make a single.
“I’m not sure about an EP, maybe in autumn [or] winter time. I did an EP last year as a summary of all my work, so I might do it again near the end of the year!” In the meantime it’s all about promoting her upcoming new single ‘Superwoman’, and one video online shows her and her fellow band mates shouting about the song.

LIAM ANTHONY
Got Bad Blood? Then Shake it Off! I have a confession!
I like Taylor Swift! Not as a human being that is. I mean, I don’t dislike her as a human being, but I don’t really keep tabs on her either.
Let me make myself clear: I’m talking about her musical output! I like her music. It’s got quite a nice beat to it and I can sing along with it. I guess I’d call it a guilty pleasure. I grew up with a mixture of Linkin Park, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and about as much rock music as a disgruntled teen could listen to. Even with my music taste having blossomed a lot throughout my twenties, listening to and enjoying Taylor Swift somewhat feels like a betrayal. But sweeping declarations of new music taste aside, why exactly am I starting 2016 off by talking about Taylor Swift? Well, it’s not some New Year’s resolution where I try to be more open and honest about my, well, eclectic taste in music. No, instead, like many things, it starts on Facebook. It happened one saturday night. I was sat scrolling through my Facebook feed when I saw a post. A screenshot of a couple of tweets, directed at my girl T-Swift. This person was complaining, because from what I gathered she had uploaded her wedding video and all of it’s audio was disabled, and it was all because of that unscrupulous fiend Taylor Swift!
KBPS
Collecting what information I could from the tweets, it seemed as though the video had the couple’s vows and wedding speeches and their first dance. And what song did they choose for their first dance? One of Taylor Swift’s. So when they uploaded the song to the video sharing site, Taylor Swift, sat in her bed hunching over her laptop, decided to take a break from playing League of Legends* and decided to check YouTube. T-swift happens upon this woman’s wedding videos, and flags it up as copyright, in order to spite this stranger for daring to use her song in her video… That is, only, she didn’t.
Of course Taylor Swift didn’t get the video’s audio taken off. Not directly, at any least. Taylor Swift, or her legal presentation, or her record label’s legal presentation, will have gone to YouTube and said “We don’t want these peasants uploading videos with T-Swift’s music on!” (I may be paraphrasing). The point I’m making is, Taylor Swift doesn’t want anyone using her music in their videos without her permission. So when this woman uploaded her wedding video, YouTube’s automated copyright system checked the video, found an illegal match, and followed it’s protocol, which is to disable the entire video’s audio.
The music magazine
9
Now, this could very easily be a story about how this person should have known better. She was a blogger and regularly uploaded videos to YouTube, meaning she was either oblivious to the rules and regulations of a site which she often used, or she didn’t care and thought she might be exempt from the rules. Let’s just say she had a momentarily lapse of judgement and didn’t think there would be any trouble (I know there’s a joke here somewhere…). You still have to question at what point she decided it was a good idea to tweet T-Swift blaming her because she lost the audio from her wedding video. I mean… Was that the only copy they had? How does that work? Did she upload the file to YouTube, then delete the file, empty the recycling bin and throw any other hard copies into a bonfire? I’m digressing. The girl blamed Taylor Swift and sent her tweets… and the people commenting on the tweets were on the girls side.
“Fair Use” is probably the most typed phrase in the entirety of YouTube video descriptions, and in most cases, it’s used incorrectly. In a completely basic and abridged explanation, Fair Use relates to the using of a copyrighted piece of creative work to be used for the purposes of review and criticism, parody and satire, or for various other uses. More importantly, what it doesn’t mean is “You can use any copyrighted work as long as you don’t make money from it”, which is what everyone seems to think it means. Indeed, in the comments section, people were jumping to the blogger’s aid by saying “She was allowed to! It’s fair use! She’s not making any money from it!”. The blogger herself, in her tweets to T-Swift, said that “we made no money
KBPS
from the track.” Which isn’t the point. It’s a creative piece of work owned by Taylor Swift, and it’s her decision whether or not she wants anyone else using it.
With the amount of “lyric” videos or fan-made music videos using clips from Home and Away (or whatever the kids watch nowadays), perhaps it’s just become ingrained in the consciousness of the YouTube culture that “Fair Use” really does mean that anyone can use a song, video, or other creative work, as long as they’re not making any money from it. We can see how words and definitions become warped and changed over time throughout the history of our own language.”Fair use”, however, isn’t just a word or a term. It’s a legal term and the definition is important, but it seems that this issue won’t be solved until YouTube can implement a better system to either stop these kinds of uploads, or at least bring up some sort of notification teaching people what Fair Use actually is when they type the term into the description box.
Although the original issue was resolved through YouTube, this may serve be a cautionary tale for others. Whilst using your favourite song as your first dance can be beautiful and meaningful, you may need to expect to not share that first dance with the world if it means if it means breaking copyright law. Perhaps look through Garage Band for some first dance music, or failing that, upload it to Dailymotion instead. *This is what I presume Taylor Swift does when she isn’t recording music or breaking up with someone.

SOUND OF 2016
As we enter the new year, it’s time for us to showcase some of the artists we would like to see breaking through this year! Every year the BBC conducts its own ‘Sound of 2016’ poll, taking opinions of critics and compiling a long list, and then short list, of the artists most likely to break through in 2016. Their rules restrict any artist who has already been in the top 20 before the end of October that year or who have already had success in a band or television show, and they’ve had good success in predicting artists, with Years and Years, Sam Smith and Adele all topping the charts over the years, with Jack Garratt 2016’s number one artist. Here we’re going to do something similar (though not quite to their strict rules!) and present to you our pick of the best artists we think will break through this year. How will they do? Only time will tell, but even if they don’t we would highly recommend you check out these artists anyway... Photos taken from artist’s Facebook pages.

changing musically for the band.
Lewis told us that there wasn’t any real life inspiration behind the record, but that it shared its DNA with the music the pair listen to, such as Chris Brown. “We just came up with a story and built a song around that.”
“We feel that will leave a bigger impact, as live is one of our strongest suits as a band, so we really want to make our sound a lot bigger.”
“It’s based on the story of a young lad who sees a girl dancing in a dance studio and is immediately physically attracted to her but as the song progresses he realises that he’s got more of an emotional connection with her rather than just a physical one.”
With their presence on social networks bringing in new fans each week, they were keen to suggest a slight chance of direction in 2016. I asked Lewis how things were
KBPS
“Our songs really don’t deviate from what we did originally [but] what we want to do is increase our sound, to sound a lot fatter, we want to have a lot more impact when we’re coming to gigs. With there being two of us it can be difficult sometimes to make a massive sound but now that we’ve got some really big backing tracks that we’ve produced ourselves, we can make the most of our live sound.
Having seen LewRey live several times, I was familiar with their multi-instrumentalist sound, and asked Lewis if backing tracks would help them continue this. “That’s absolutely it,” he confirmed.

“It gives me a lot more freedom with the saxophone, it gives me freedom to play piano and possibly guitar at some point. I think the versatility in the band has always been something quite aesthetically pleasing to an audience, as people are impressed we can play more than one instrument.”
It’s clear from LewRey’s online presence that the fans are embracing their new single, regular posts showing how the song continued to ride up the iTunes chart with each passing days, fans and listeners of the song keen to help this publicity by sharing statuses. “[The response has been] amazing! It’s reassured us that what we’re doing is the right thing and that people are actually really enjoying the music, as sometimes when you haven’t released something in a long time you’re wonder whether you’re on the ball with it. I think once we’d recorded the track we knew we were onto a winner. We released it, and a lot of our friends really like it. “It was funny, because on the morning it came out I had a look in the iTunes chart just to see if it was there and it was nowhere to be seen, then suddenly as soon as the social media started to go it started to explode, and it went in at #138 and went up to #18.”
The release has continued to climb since and the launch party held on Friday 15th January can only have helped this. Launching the record at an exclusive, but sold out, gig at Holmfirth, they were joined by Ginger Tom and rising local stars Tom Zanetti and K.O. Kane, Zanetti having recently signed to a major record label.
KBPS
“He’s a really big artist locally but he actually contacted us recently because we covered one of his songs in our medleys, and he heard about this video we put out as it got 13,000 views in a week. Someone had put him onto the video and he asked me to send him the link and he really liked it so ever since then we’ve been talking and he agreed to do the show.”
With the number of artists LewRey have supported in their short time together, it’s clear they’ve been having an incredible time. “It’s been absolutely amazing, and it’s confirmed that this is 100% what we want to do and we’re going to go for it, and it’s been amazing to meet all these people. Sometimes you can get frustrated but you’re not going anywhere fast, but if we actually take a step back and look at where we were last year it’s a huge improvement. And we’ve also done some really amazing shows, and met some amazing people!” Two gigs stand out for Lewis as particular highlights of their times together.
“There are two gigs that we did, and I think it was because we went to those gigs not expecting it to be as it was. We played the Tramlines festival, and Sheffield Cathedral, and supported a band called Aquillo. We were escorted to the stage and everyone was sat on the floor in complete silence, and there must be have been well over 1000 people just sat there waiting to listen to us play, and that was a really surreal experience. “Also the Greenbelt festival was amazing, as it was in a woodland area, and we played the Canopy Stage. Again there were just 1000s of people sat on the floor, fairy lights running through the woodland; It just created a really magical atmosphere and we got to play a really big set!”

Looking back at previous live sets, I was interested to learn more about their song selection for their medleys, where they mash-up several songs together into one piece.
“Whenever you go clubbing or walk into a nightclub, so many young people are impressed by DJs mixing and how you can hear aspects of one song in another, and actually not many people tempted to do that live in the beginning, but lots of bands do it now. I’d like to think we were one of the bands who did a decent job of it, and put some songs together and made people turn their heads a little bit.
“It was one of the things where if we were turn up to a gig, and there are people there who are sixty, but also people at the age of fifteen, how can we relate to both of them with one song? Playing them two songs they both know but mixing them together, we thought, would be a good solution.”
With ‘Somebody’ now doing well online, it was only left for me to ask Lewis what he thought the rest of 2016 holds for LewRey. “We’re going to release another single, probably in the next two – four months, and that’s going to do better than this one, that’s the aim. Then we might think about releasing an EP later on at the back end of 2016 if that goes well, and continue to increase our profile on line.” The band marked their arrival into 2016 with a series of new year resolutions on their Facebook page, some serious, some not so, including “Go to sleep before 4am”, “visit the hospital less that 15 times a year” and “play at least 150 gigs”. I was keen to know how they were getting on.
“I think we’ve done alright so far, the personal ones are quite easy. “Buy more equipment”, we always buy more equipment! In terms of the serious goals we made, we’d love to get some of the big festivals this year and play in front of some big audiences, and also these releases fingers crossed will help us expose ourselves and collaborate with some big artists!” You can find out more about LewRey by visiting lew-rey.com.

How we used to joke, and why not – Motörhead were in the middle of their 40th anniversary tour, and he’d spent a few years with Hawkwind before that, all the while living the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. (According to the man himself, over 1,000 women and a bottle of Jack Daniels a day for most of his career) and yet until the start of 2015 he seemed completely indestructible. Alas that wasn’t so, and despite the imperious nature of Bad Magic, Lemmy laboured through the tour somewhat, having to abandon gigs due to ill health and in the footage of their final gig in Berlin just a month ago, struggling to produce the vocals for Overkill. Still, no-one could honestly have seen his death coming, just two days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.
You dare say the man himself would have raised a wry chuckle at some of the reporting of his death (A French newspaper just leading with the headline “Fuck”) but even more so at the sudden outpouring of talking about him as a cultural icon, having repeatedly affirmed that he was no hero in interviews. And yet in many ways, he was – the kid from StokeOn-Trent who overcame adversity time and time again (the death of his girlfriend, and described love of his life, at 19 from a heroin overdose; being kicked out of Hawkwind and nearly arrested, Motörhead nearly disbanding before they even got going after the debut album was rejected by their label) to inspire entire genres (Speed Metal and Thrash).
KBPS
Much of the tributes have focused around the target of being louder than everyone else, and while Motörhead were definitely that, it’d be unfair to paint Lemmy as just the leader of a bunch of monolithic brutes. His lyricism was far more than that, from the dark confrontation of heroin addiction in Dead Men Tell No Tales through to poems about the battle of the Somme in 1916 and a chilling narrative about child abuse (Don’t Let Daddy Kiss Me), he was perfectly at ease tackling the hard issues. Never was that more apparent than when he was invited to speak on the war on drugs at the Welsh Assembly and stood up to call for the legalisation of heroin to tackle the problems of drug dealers and addiction – hellraiser by day and night but a fiercely sharp philosopher alongside that. It’s hard to put into words just how important Lemmy was to music and to myself amongst millions of others, and he probably would have scoffed at the sentimentality anyway, but suffice to say that despite singing about not wanting to live forever on their most recognisable hit ‘Ace of Spades’, his status as the most instantly recognisable rock-star, and arguably the last great rock-star in a world that now demands slick media handling and business acumen from its biggest acts, pretty much guarantees that his legacy will live far beyond him and indeed many of us. RIP Lemmy Kilmister (1945-2015) – Born to lose, Lived to Win.
