Blind dates don’t always have the best reputation, but they can be promising especially when the person setting you up tells you that you’re perfect for each other. Suzanne and Joseph’s first meeting wasn’t easy though as Joseph was working in London, England at the time. When Joseph flew back to Canada to attend his best friend’s wedding and made a stop at the matchmaking friend’s birthday party, he was finally able to meet Suzanne. Unfortunately, the situation wasn’t ideal with Joseph having to fly back to England very soon, but not wanting the opportunity to slip away, Joseph took a leap of faith and asked Suzanne on a date. During that night, they discovered that their friend was right after all and continued to keep in touch. In another act of faith five months later, Joseph packed up his life in London and returned to Canada with neither of them looking back since.

We still have friends that are talking about it nearly 3 months later.” Suzanne, the bride

One look was all it took for Grace and Herman. While working as a driver for a local real estate developer, Grace was to pick up Herman, a lender for one of the company’s developments, from his office. It began as an assignment like any other, but the moment when their eyes locked in the rear-view mirror, a lasting impression was made on the both of them. Years later, the two attended the opening of the Shangri-La Hotel and spotted each other from across the room. It started with a knowing look, continued with a smile, and then the rest became history.

MEETING DURING THEIR UNDERGRADUATE YEARS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING FOR KARLA AND OSCAR. Developing a good friendship, their relationship steadily grew to the point where they started dating. Things began to really get serious when they made the decision of a lifetime and moved to England for two years where they travelled and gained new experiences together. During this time Oscar took Karla on a surprise trip to Brugge, Belgium and choosing the most appropriate location by the Minnewater Lake, also known as the Lake of Love, Oscar asked Karla to be his wife.

This page, Clockwise from Top Left The bride wore gold Badgley Mischka wedges embellished with Swarovski crystals; Groomsmen were presented with gifts from the groom; Leonidas chocolates flown from Belgium were the wedding favours; Emelle’s Catering provided a tantalizing buffet; Gold embossing complimented the elegant floral print on the invitations. Planning a wedding in Vancouver while still in Europe wasn’t the easiest, but luckily the couple had the help of their mothers to plan all the details. One of the easiest decisions to make was holding their ceremony at the Capilano Suspension Bridge where, despite the rain that showered on them throughout the day, being surrounded by the natural beauty of British Columbia set the perfect backdrop for the couple to affirm their love for each other.

Things have a way of easily falling into place when you know exactly what you want. This was the case for high school sweethearts, Ulla and Brad when it came to making decisions for their rustic vintage themed wedding. Wanting to have a country feel with modern touches to reflect their sophisticated, but down-to-earth personalities, they worked with their team of vendors to bring their vision to life.

UNEXPECTED LOVE

Text by Lina Sana Photos by Ken Tan Photo 28 | ITSLOVE.CA | FALL 2014

Love can sometimes be found in the most unexpected of places. Selina and Alfred had been well aware of each other since high school, but it wasn’t until they met in a course about Sacred Japanese Art, an elective that had absolutely nothing to do with their university majors, that sparks flew. On their third anniversary, Alfred uncharacteristically asked Selina to take a stroll with him after dinner and after some friendly teasing due to that fact, Alfred got down on one knee and asked Selina to marry him.

When Josh first saw Robyn, he didn’t exactly hit it off with her. Working as a referee for an intermural volleyball league at UBC REC, he happened to spot Robyn, an Assistant Director for the program, as she diligently studied human physiology. Though his first attempt to talk to her wasn’t as successful as he had hoped, it would be years later when Robyn witnessed Josh’s skills on the dance floor that her interest was piqued. After seeing each other through different relationships and multitudes of conversations on MSN, Robyn and Josh finally connected and have blissfully spent their time discovering who they are together since.

Emelle’s Catering can make your special event a successful reality. Text by Lina Sana Photos by Ophelia and Romeo Photographers

Emelle’s Catering was founded by President and Executive Chef, Mary Lee Newnham whose repertoire includes spending time at the Convention Centre and other catering businesses, personal “chefing” for celebrities, and working as acting Executive Chef for the Petro Canada Pavilion in 1992 for an Expo in Spain. One of the foundational principles for Emelle’s is, “How can we be of service?” When working with clients, the staff at Emelle’s not only create incredible menus of food but they also create an experience. SAVE THEDATE

There are times when we’re afraid to take chances, but sometimes you have to take risks when you’re falling in love. Garry met Joanne 5 years ago through his best friend and they found themselves seeing each other more frequently from that point forward. That is, until Joanne left for Taiwan after completing her studies. Although they had lost touch for half a year, the pair found each other again across the world in Hong Kong. After maintaining a long distance relationship for months, Joanne returned to Vancouver to pack up what she left behind and that’s when Garry decided to tell her how he really felt through a hand written letter. 6 months into their relationship, Garry decided to give Joanne something special, a ring, and it would be only right if he proposed in the most tremendous way possible. While Joanne knew that they would be going out to dinner, she didn’t know that it included a helicopter flight. While suspended in mid-air overlooking the Hong Kong Skyline, Garry took Joanne’s hands into his and asked her to be his wife.

FALL 2014 | ITSLOVE.CA | 45

It’s not easy planning the perfect proposal, especially when it involves months of sneaking around your significant other, but James’ hard work all came together when he gave Meagan the surprise of a lifetime. Under the guise of a Christmas family get-together, James brought Meagan to Porter’s Bistro Coffee & Tea House, her favourite place in the world, and even the photographer standing on a ladder snapping pictures of the couple wasn’t enough to raise her suspicions of what was to come. When James stopped her just before entering the building, telling her it wasn’t just any ordinary night, she glanced inside the restaurant to see 50 familiar faces of family and friends staring back at them and that’s when she knew. Getting down on one knee after saying many sweet words, James asked Meagan to marry him. With the photographer there to capture all the moments and surrounded by love, James and Meagan enjoyed an evening which they would never forget. ASK THE EXPERT MAYHEW SHERWOOD FLORIST Our experts answer your questions all about wedding day floral selections. Text by Vicki Siu Photos by Katie Powell Photography

Mayhew Sherwood Florist has been in Kitsilano since 1946. Vicki is the current owner of the shop, with nearly a decade of experience in the floral industry under her green thumb, and she will be answering your questions all about wedding flowers!

How can I prepare for my consultation with my florist? For your initial consultation, you should try to come in with a budget (typically 7%-10% of your total wedding budget), theme, and colour scheme. If you've scouted some ideas online or in magazines, it's a great idea to bring these in for your consultation. That way, your florist can get a better sense of your personal style. Pinterest has been a helpful tool for florists and couples alike during the planning process. You can create a board to share with your florist that covers a range of ideas and options. A good florist will be able make appropriate suggestions and help narrow it down to a few choices.

Is it possible to see my centrepieces and bouquets before the big day?

clients at least 2-3 times before the wedding and I give them plenty of time to digest the information I provide.

How much effect does seasonality have on my choice of flowers? Here in British Columbia, we are lucky to have plenty of choice year-round. Personally, I prefer to use locally grown products since our local growers are able to offer such a wide selection of flowers (especially during peak growing seasons). Buying local also means having a fresher product and a reduced carbon footprint. However, some flowers only grow locally during certain times of the year and others are not grown locally at all. If there is a flower you absolutely cannot live without, it may be possible for your florist to import them from abroad. Keep in mind that you may have to pay a premium for imports.

hen we travel around the world, we expect to encounter new people and new experiences, but it’s not too often that we expect to meet the one. Working in television and film, Jax travelled frequently between Vancouver, Toronto, and Los Angeles and wherever she went, she made it her mission to perform random acts of kindness. It was one day in Vancouver where she stumbled upon a sad looking young man in a Starbucks cafÊ and after deciding to buy him a cookie to cheer him up, the man reciprocated the kind act by inviting Jax to see a local band that weekend. Although Jax was hesitant to go at first, she was glad that she did because that was the night she met Dante. Following an entire night of talking and a morning of kissing, the couple have been together since.

After remembering to purchase cat food, the two drove directly to Birks to pick out the perfect engagement ring.

When a limo driver approached Kelsey during her date with Sean and stated that he had arrived to pick her up, she thought that he had mistaken her for someone else. She soon found out that this was no mistake as she entered the limo and found all her favourite things which were strategically placed by Sean who had also mysteriously disappeared. The driver whisked Kelsey away for a day to be pampered so she would be prepared for what was to come next. Sean had meanwhile arrived at the Shangri La Hotel and spent several hours adorning their suite with candles and rose petals. When Kelsey arrived at the hotel room, she noticed a banner that read “Kelsey & Sean Tie the Knot and after finding a letter and poem written by Sean, he finally approached her with one last surprise and asked Kelsey to be with him for the rest of their lives.
