EDITOR'S LETTER

Words cannot even begin to express how excited I am that spring is here! I’m anxiously awaiting the trees blossoming and the flowers blooming. I’m also out on a mission this year to prove that I have a green thumb.

Lucky enough for us, we don’t have to worry about growing our own flowers for our weddings. All we need to do is bring in the ideas and leave them in the hands of a professional florist. As florals are a huge part of any wedding, I have had the pleasure of flipping through the pages of the magazine and seeing endless inspiration for them. Their variety and versatility have the power to transform any event.

In this issue all about Flowers and Stationery, we bring you some of the best work our florists’ have to offer. The photo gallery showcases bouquet recipes, displaying each florists’ unique style and the articles provide insight on what you need to know when making decisions about your flowers. Our resident stationery expert, Keeks Paper Co., also introduces you to what you need to know while deciding on your stationery suites. Marta wasn’t exactly the romantic beginning he had hoped for as it included a “questionable” Halloween costume and several other embarrassing moments that took Marta some time to get over.

However, Darren would spend the next five years pursuing Marta and making amends, until one day it finally clicked that he was more than just her great friend.

“My most memorable moment was marrying the girl I pined over for 5 years – I never gave up on her. I was told many times to give up and move on, but I persisted and kept asking and asking. She said no many times, but she said yes when it counted. That was the most memorable moment of not only the wedding day but of my life.” - Darren

REAL WINNIPEG WEDDING RATHER THAN HAVING A FORMAL EVENT, THE couple opted for a celebration where

they could enjoy social interactions with all the important people in their lives. Some of the unique elements involved were family heirlooms updated by the Diamond Gallery for their wedding bands, stationery all handmade by Marta with a custom ink stamper, guests throwing paper airplanes as the couple walked down the aisle after the ceremony, and a hatchet throwing contest. While a severe 20 minute rainstorm poured, after the ceremony, the sun came shining turning it into just the wedding day they hoped for. This Page Hatchet throwing was a popular activity amongst guests; Bridesmaids and groomsmen chose their own attire, cohesively fitting with the wedding theme; The wedding décor was all sourced by the couple’s family including the driftwood centrepieces and the antiques; A rainstorm soaked all the guests entering the ceremony, but cleared to a hot and beautiful sunny afternoon as the couple hoped for. Opposite Page A bold red lip complemented the bride’s choice of a simple form fitting dress; The groom wore a modern slim fitting suit with a classic colour scheme of grey, blue, and brown; Guests tables were set family style to encourage socialisation amongst guests; Florals consisted of white cream garden roses, seeded eucalyptus.

Tatiana from Oak & Lily explains, “Each wedding is unique and has an individual style. Typically the bridal party's bouquets and centerpieces for the reception tables will be the most common florals at a wedding. Prepare for your consultation by making a list of the number of people in your wedding party and the number of tables you expect at the reception.” Additionally, you want to consider your ceremony and reception venues as well as other activities to determine where florals would be appropriate you can have them down the aisle for the ceremony, on your cake, or as thank you gifts. The possibilities are endless.

WEDDING HELP WEDDING STATIONERY With bigger items on the wedding checklist, sometimes couples may forget all about their wedding stationery. Don’t wait until it’s too late! We asked Keeks Paper Co. to provide some guidelines so you can start preparing your stationery suites! Text by Keeks Paper Co.

I like to say that stationery is actually a great place to start when deciding you wedding theme, especially as you need to get those pups out 3-6 months before your wedding date.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE CUSTOM INVITATIONS MADE, YOU CAN

explore ideas for imagery and styles with your designer. Your resulting custom stationery can be used to help guide your future style decisions. You can even take your invitations with you to flower, décor, and other specialists to help bring your wedding day look together.

If you already have a good idea of how you would like to style your day, there are three elements you can use to tie in your invitations with your theme: colour, imagery, and paper. Bring your ideas to your invitation consultation and you can work together with your designer to bring everything together!

EXPERT ADVICE It is ideal for a couple to book a consultation about 4 months before the wedding or earlier – 5-6+ months, if you would like save the dates, but I am not big on etiquette.

PERSONALIZE YOUR STATIONERY

My favourite way to personalize stationery is a custom stamp. You can either get a stamp made with your return address, or as a monogram. The best part is, the stamp is yours to have a keep using - what a sweet memento!

The only ones I stick to are sending your invites 3 months ahead of the wedding date and requesting rsvps to be returned 1 month before the wedding. This is more of a guide than a rule. If it's not going to happen, don't be distressed – just do your best to follow the guidelines. I had a friend who took over a year to get her thank you’s out after her wedding and it was not for lack of care, but because she cared so much! She spent a lot of time making sure those who contributed to her wedding felt appreciated and that took time. Of course I would say you are cutting it quite close if your invites are going out one or two months before your wedding. If you foresee this happening, try to find a way to let out-oftown guests know as soon as you can how they can make arrangements to attend.

It’s a great idea to research what flowers you like and what arrangement styles appeal to you before your consultation, but it may be difficult to determine what price range they come in. Don’t be afraid to fall in love with a style though – when you know your budget, it will make it easier for the florist to work with it. The Floral Fixx states, “An experienced florist should be able to help you achieve the look you love, no matter your budget – to help plan you budget, prioritize all the pieces of the puzzle, and then spend more on what’s important to you as a couple.” While florists can work with any budget, The Floral Fixx finds that their most popular floral price range is $1500-$3000.

Certain styles require more flowers while others can be filled in with layers of lush greenery. The more condensed the flowers are, the more flowers you need. Knowing a bride's budget ahead of time will aid in being able to offer options that fit within it.”

The second option is my personal suggestion, this way if there are any problems or breakage, your florist can handle the situation.”

With the new generation of silk flowers came the inspiration for House of Silk to work with and create arrangements that made clients double check the authenticity of the botanicals. Seeing them in photos will also fool you. Many photographers revel in the fact that it’s nice not to have to worry about the flowers in hot or cool temperatures, as silk florals can withstand these conditions, so that they can focus on the bride and her party.
