After Ezra proposed in Chicago, the couple romanced the idea of moving to New York together and after a lengthy immigration process, they moved to Brooklyn to start their wedding planning and the rest of their lives together.

Consider a few dates and a few venues. What do you want your day to feel like? What do you want to remember when you reflect back on your wedding? What are the most important aspects of a wedding to you and your fiancé?

Pick up a great wedding planning binder. There are some really great ones available that include timelines, budget planners, tips from vendors, inspiration pictures, and pockets to stash colour swatches, receipts, and so on.

Once you have a general idea for what you’d like from your wedding, the next step is to work on your budget. Talk to your parents if they’re contributing, and sit down with your fiancé to figure out how much money you’re willing to spend. From there, you have some big decisions to make!

BUDGET PLANNING HOW TO WORK WITH YOUR WEDDING PLANNER Most wedding planners offer different services and packages to suit your needs and budget. We asked experienced planners how their services can help you lower wedding costs and the conclusion is that they might just save you money in the long run. Text by Kama (Kim) Shuvi

PLAN YOUR BUDGET WISELY One of the first questions your wedding planner will ask you about is your budget. Knowing that detail right from the beginning of the planning process will help them keep you from overspending. ANDREA FROM SOIRÉE EVENT PLANNING comments, “A budget should always be the first step in planning; it allows you to make educated decisions when hiring vendors and make decisions throughout the planning process.” Your wedding planner will also ask about your priorities to understand what things are important to you and will work with your budget to provide you with maximum results. Their experience and familiarity with the local wedding industry will benefit you, not only because of the discounts they may receive from various vendors but also from their access to rentals, linens, and décor. “Although most people assume staying on budget means giving up things that are not as important to you, that’s not always necessary,” says AMANDA AT A MOMENT TO REMEMBER. Being able to provide you with your top list “must haves” but also with your “like to haves” is one of the wedding planners’ expertise.

THE BUDGET RELATIONSHIP IS KEY When choosing the right planner, you should take into consideration their company’s experience, your wedding needs, the confidence they are giving you, and the trust they are building. Interviewing potential planners is definitely acceptable and will enable you to ask important questions to see if there’s a fit. MADELINE OF MADELINE’S WEDDINGS & EVENTS emphasizes, “An experienced planner should be able to answer all of your questions with ease and confidence.” Throughout the planning process, you and your planner will spend a lot of time together and you will have to trust their judgement in certain situations. Therefore, hiring someone who’s trustworthy, always there to answer your questions, and simply gives you the feeling that everything’s under control is sometimes worth more than saving a few extra dollars.

Tip from Madeline: Be leery of any planning companies that want to charge you a percentage of your budget as their fee. The result would be paying them hundreds if not thousands of dollars unnecessarily. We believe in giving an agreed upon price for our services so you know exactly what you’re paying upfront.

USE YOUR PLANNER’S CONNECTIONS Wedding planners usually work with various preferred vendors from different categories. They know very well the vendor's quality of service and work, style, and price range so they can recommend the best vendor to suit your wedding. As ANDREA AT SOIRÉE EVENT PLANNING explains, “We really strive to customize our weddings to the couple so that it reflects their personality and style. We also work hard at getting you other discounts through our preferred vendors, venues, and other wedding vendors for your wedding. We never take any kickbacks and all discounts are passed directly onto you,

If you decided to hire a wedding planner, ask them how they can leverage their connections to benefit you and lower your costs.

UNEXPECTED EXPENSES Unexpected costs will most certainly pop up along the planning process and leaving enough money aside to cover them is always a good idea; the question is, “how much is enough?” By building a cost projection, your planner is taking into consideration all possible expenses and calculates them into your budget so you won’t have to worry about how much money to leave aside.

We asked AMANDA FROM A MOMENT TO REMEMBER to indicate some of the common items couples usually forget to budget for: Pre-wedding meals and drinks - Your wedding is going to require a lot of energy so it is important to eat and drink to stay refreshed and hydrated throughout the day. Vendors’ meals - Proper wedding etiquette indicates you should also be providing meals to your vendors who are working over 8 hours on the wedding day. Gratuities - You should budget about 5% of your budget to gratuities. Some vendors include the tip in their price so review your contracts carefully when budgeting. Alterations for your wedding dress - Dresses normally need to be hemmed and fitted once you receive them which is normally not included when you purchase the dress. Cake cutting fee - Some venues and caterers do not include this in their original price and some places have specific conditions in which they will add this in the cost such

Some couples I talk to are worried about having too much lighting in their venue and this is a fair concern, but I have yet to light a wedding where the guests have been overwhelmed with light. Alternatively, I have experienced weddings that have not had enough. Whether there is not enough uplighting for the size of room or the band is left playing in dark, an appropriate amount of lighting cannot be understated.

It helps to give them a clear vision of what the couple is wanting and the colour palette they are working within.
