Patrick won't admit it, but Kateri made the first move in their relationship. They had known each other for years, having gone to high school together. When Kateri saw that Patrick was a volunteer at the Sugar Shack at Festival du Voyageur, she didn't hesitate to chat him up all night long, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Patrick gets all the credit for their romantic engagement story, though. After setting up a Christmas tree together, he told Kateri to close her eyes. When she opened them, he was down on one knee, with her first Christmas present dangling like an ornament on the tree: a stunning diamond solitaire engagement ring.

BUDGET FOR POSTAGE Postage is a sneaky expense that most couples don’t see coming, so let’s do the math right now. One stamp for standard lettermail within Canada costs 63 cents. The average wedding guest list size is 141 persons. That’s $88.83 to send your invitations. Double that if you’re sending Save the Dates, and triple it if you’re also including inner envelopes for your guests’ responses. And remember, that total doesn’t factor in taxes or out-of-country mailing.
CUT MAILING COSTS That being said, there are ways to significantly reduce the amount you spend on postage. If your stationer and calligrapher are in Winnipeg, you’ll save quite a bit on shipping. Natasha from C O U T U R E LO V E has some great tips: “If a traditional RSVP isn’t important to you, opt for a phone or email RSVP at the bottom of your invite. You can also save money by considering the thickness of your invite as a thicker and heavier invite can double your mailing costs.”
SAY YES TO CALLIGRAPHY Okay, calligraphy will tack on an extra expense and is a completely avoidable cost, but oh is it a pretty one! For envelopes, expect to spend anywhere from $2 to $4 per, and be sure to order as much as 20% more to allow for error. If you’re really trying to pinch pennies, Julie Doan of J U L I E D O A N C A L L I G R A P H Y has some tips: “You can work calligraphy into your invitation suite by choosing certain words, like the couple’s name or the date of the wedding, having them written once, and having the calligrapher scan it and send it as an image file to your stationer. Or, if you really want each envelope done, you can find someone on Etsy who is just starting out. I’ve seen prices as low as $1.75 per envelope on there. Remember, though, that you’ll have to pay for shipping if they aren’t local!”

KNEW THAT AMY WAS THE WOMAN HE WANTED TO SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE WITH. After 11 months of dating, he planned an extra special day filled with all of their favourite things to do together. By evening, when the date was coming to an end, he had her solve a crossword puzzle he had created, and then he gave her a paper with four lines on it, each connecting to an answer in the crossword. The four words were, “Will You Marry Me?” When Amy solved the puzzle, she looked up, and Brendan was on one knee, asking for her hand in marriage.

They even brought in grandma’s old sewing machine stand to display all their lace doilies and sweet treats for their guests.

PAINTERLY FLORALS Illustrated blooms offer a range of style options and enable you to tie personal details–such as which flowers you are carrying down the aisle–into your stationery. Luxury and opulence, as seen in the Art Deco era box office hit Great Gatsby, are being re-imagined in stationery. For 2014, florals will be bigger, brighter, and influenced by nostalgia. In palettes of coral, bombshell pink, navy, and gold they not only come to life on paper but offer a range of design options when coordinating envelopes, table linens, and all other wedding details.

WEDDING CREST Personalized monograms were hot in 2013. Fresh for 2014, this trend evolves into a custom crest designed to act as a wedding logo. Styles range from regal and collegiate to soft and romantic. Often including the wedding year and couple’s initials, a crest serves up continuity and class when applied to a stationery suite, ceremony programs, and reception details.
HAND-ILLUSTRATED LETTERING Calligraphy on invitations and envelopes has been a huge trend. It isn’t time to say goodbye, but 2014 will bring a more whimsical approach to lettering. Often rendered by an artist, hand-lettered text is digitized and printed directly onto the invitation. Choosing to handletter your entire invite ensure uniqueness, and when paired with illustrated florals or a textile-inspired pattern, creates a visual that is sure to entice and excite your guests.

COLOUR 2013 brought us the rich and opulent shades of emerald, sapphire, coral, and gold. Looking ahead to 2014, we will continue to see saturated colours paired with soft creams and golds, but we will also see a shift towards the warmer hues of lavender, berry, and fuchsia.
GLITZ & GLAM 2014 brings a revival of sparkly details and feminine touches. Instead of recycled vintage we are seeing movement towards luxe details like lace, diamanté, and pearls. These classic pairings offer a neutral colour palette upon which you can build interest with secondary colours and patterns, or keep subtle and soft in a creamy white-on-white stationery suite.
