LETTER FROM YOUR LTG | 02

Hello Division 30 South, Can you believe that it’s halfway through this term already!? I’m so astonished at how much our division has accomplished and I can’t wait to see what more we can achieve in this last half of the term! This month, we had one of the biggest events yet, Region Training Conference. To all of those who attended, thank you and I hope that you learned something that will lead you in the right direction of your Key Club journey. The Region 3 Lieutenant Governors and I worked extremely hard on this event and we hope that you at least got to make friends from other divisions! As November approaches, a few of my favorite events are approaching and nothing makes me happier than getting to host them. If you are going to Fall Rally South on November 13th, make sure to attend at least 3/4 of the Spirit Nights, so that you learn all the cheers and is prepared to win that spirit stick for the 3RD YEAR IN A ROW!!! In addition, Keysgiving is hosted in late November, which were one of my favorite events freshmen year. Make sure to come out and spend time with the Division 30 South family! Other than updates, I hoping that you all have been taking care of yourselves well. Don’t stress yourself out too much and find time to live in the moment. There’s only about 2 months of 2021 left, so make sure that you make the most of it! Sun-cerely,

SPOTLIGHT ON

SERVICE what is the spotlight on service program?

The CNH Spotlight on Service Program (SOSP) was created by the Service Projects Committee to promote District and International Initiatives as well as to encourage active participation with organizations and initiatives. Monthly guides include tips and ideas on how clubs can complete the monthly service initiatives. The program also gives clubs the opportunity to showcase their unique service projects that positively impact their home, school, and community. The Spotlight on Service Program would love to receive project submissions from the District to showcase projects from the previous month in the District Newsletter. give back to staff

On Friday, September 3rd from 3:30-4:30 pm, John F. Kennedy had their first service project called “Give Back to Staff!” This service project was planned by our two lovely Vice Presidents, Mikayla Luu and Caitlan Tayde. With everyone coming back to campus for the first time in over a year, members were able to create several cards for the staff of John F. Kennedy High School to thank them for all that they have done for us. The cards themselves were written on a blank sheet of paper with the bolded letters “THANK YOU” written on the top and a cute little animal in the bottom right corner. Our Vice President Caitlan Tayde stated, “We thought it would be important to let the staff of our school know that their hard work is appreciated.” I personally think this is such an amazing way to get the message through to our staff. With us being socially distant and away from a lot of people for a long period of time, it may be hard for a lot to tell others how they truly feel. Through something like making cards dedicated to a specific teacher/staff, it is a heartfelt way to let the other know how much they do for others. Although I, unfortunately, couldn’t make it I would have had so much fun, and written a bunch of cards, for all the teachers that have adapted to us not being in person for such a long time. I hope that everyone could feel the warmth that I felt when seeing people appreciating other's hard work! Maybe some other Key Clubbers could be inspired to write a card of their own to anyone, in general, that has helped them adapt and be the best person they could be for the school year. I know we are all going through difficult times with the reintroduction of in-person school, but know you have people all around you who are willing to help you, so don’t be afraid to reach out!

treats for dogs and cats

The event of Treats for Dogs and Cats was a very fun experience. We were able to make chew toys out of unwanted shirts for dogs and cats. We ended up making a lot of them but they were all unique and amazing. This event was great because we were all able to have loads of fun making the toys while hanging out with each other. I liked taking pictures at this event because the lightning was great and really captured the feeling that you get when you do service projects. I really liked the service project that we did because I have a dog and I know how much dogs love toys so knowing that our toys could go to some cute dogs really made my heart full. I was able to connect more with the key club members and really have some hilarious conversations THE

| 06 with them. Being able to talk with the key club members and working with them is probably the best thing in key club. I always love making new connections with the people in my club because I know I'll see them again in another event and we'll be able to have more fun in that time. Another
thing that I enjoyed about this event was just taking pictures, being able to see through my camera and see all of this emotion and capturing it actually makes me feel so much better than one would think it to. It makes me feel happy that people gather to do a service event, something that really they don’t have to do but they choose to because they want to help their community. I love thinking about how people feel during events and trying to capture that with my camera.

paint and picnic

Division 30 South had the opportunity to host a Paint N Picnic service event on October 3rd from 2 PM - 5 PM at West United Methodist Church. Members were able to paint tote bags, rocks, and Color-A-Smile activities. Thank you Division 30 South for your dedication and for participating! It was a very successful event with 134 members present and 402 hours served!

ANTICIPATING FALL RALLY SOUTH 2021

By the time you are reading this, Fall Rally sign-ups and payments have already closed, but for those that are attending Fall Rally South, here’s a recap of my experience at Fall Rally South 2019! Before we start with the day of Fall Rally South on November 9th, 2019, let’s talk about the Spirit Nights beforehand. To attend Fall Rally, it was and still is mandatory to attend 3 out of 4 Spirit Nights. At these Spirit Nights, we learned the cheers for all 3 rounds, which I will talk more about later in this article. We learned the cheers in groups, had spirit battles, and cheered all together to prepare for the special day. We practiced for weeks before Fall Rally, with our last Spirit Night being the night before. In my opinion, these Spirit Nights were really fun, especially since I got to spend time with my Key Club friends and make more throughout the division, no joke. The day of Fall Rally South comes, and I wake up at 4 AM today to prepare. Getting my backpack ready full of snacks and Key Club gear, I start heading to Savannah High School at 5 AM with OAKC IP IP President Tobi Yao, LTG Christina Nguyen, and my older sister Kristie! There, I met up with a bunch of my Key Club friends, and we started heading to Valencia, where Six Flags Magic Mountain is located. Once we arrived, the first thing we did was start going to Spirit Session 2, which was the session that Region 3 and many other divisions were assigned to. At this session, the biggest spirit battle of Fall Rally South occurred, everything we practiced for would be on the line at this assembly. Although it’s better to experience it rather than read about it, there were 3 rounds, where 2-3 divisions were eliminated each round! We made it to round 3, against D04W and D04N, two of the biggest divisions in our region, not including us of course. After the rounds of cheering, the winner of the Spirit Session was announced by the District Executives of the 2019-2020 term and turns out, Division 30 South Suns won. All our hard work paid off, and we won the Spirit Stick for the second term in a row. For the rest of the day, I went on 3 rides with my sister, which were so fun but also boring because of the long lines. However, many other people decided to take pictures all day or cheer in spirit battles against other friend groups in other divisions all over Southern California. Fall Rally 2019 was an amazing experience, but reading about it is definitely not as fun as it actually is. If you’d like to see the spirit session in 2019, just email me or dm me on Instagram, since I have video of all 3 rounds of cheers, which earned us the Spirit Stick for the 2nd year in a row! I’m sure all of you going to Fall Rally South can’t wait, and I can’t wait as well. Hopefully, we can win that Spirit Stick for the 3rd time in a row! See you there!

COLOR FEST

r e c a p

Hi Suns! I hope you all are doing well as the school year progresses. For all the new Suns that have joined us during club rush, a monthly event that’s very important in Key Club are DCMs! They stand for Division Council Meetings, and they are much more enjoyable than they sound. The most recent DCM that we had was September DCM, and I’ll recap it for you all so you’ll know what to expect for future DCMs! Every DCM is usually centered around a certain event that’ll happen at the event. For September, the event was Color Fest! This is a fun activity where you chase around your friends and throw colored powder on each other. We also had this DCM with the Division 4 West Dragons and Division 4 North Otters, which makes it even better because you’re able to meet new people from different divisions! The first thing that you should do when you arrive to a DCM is to check-in. This is one of the most important parts of a DCM because checking in will prove that you went to the DCM. While everyone was checking in with their respective divisions, I went to go support the fundraisers that were being held there. Each division was selling something there: D30S was selling boba, D4W was selling cookies, and D4N was selling t-shirts for Color Fest. Once everyone got checked in, it was time for the DCM to begin! The DCM started with the usual updates from our LTG, Christina! We went over the previous service projects and events that occurred over the previous month, and we also went over upcoming projects and events so we could be informed of what’s next. We also were able to get some members recognized at the DCM, with Kenneth, Devanshi, and Tiffany being recognized for achieving the Platinum award last year for their dedication to Key Club. On top of that, Johnny, Victoria, and I were announced as members of this year’s Spirit Committee! After the updates were over, the fun was able to start! Everyone prepared for the Color Fest by getting powder from their respective divisions, with each division giving powder that correlated with their mascot colors. Division 30 South had yellow powder since we are the Suns, Division 4 West had red powder since they are the Dragons, and Division 4 North had teal powder since they are the Otters. Once everyone got ready, chaos ensued! From afar, you can see the air around the battlefield being filled with powder, and it was just a mess of yellow, red, and teal powder being mixed around. Many people had splotches of yellow, red, and teal on their shirts since it was highly recommended to wear white shirts to show off the colors. Some people got a bit carried away with the powder, which made some people needing to find water to wash away the powder. It was a little scary, but sometimes you just have to live on the dangerous side for a little bit. The color chaos ensued for quite a while. After everyone was satisfied with the mess that they created, it was time to document the mess on everyone’s shirts. At this point, the DCM was over, and people started to call their rides so they can go home and wash off the powder. Overall, it was quite a fun DCM to attend, and I highly encourage all of you to attend future DCMs! It probably won’t get as messy as this one, but DCMs in general are really fun and informative to be at, and it’s a great way to meet people from your own division and possibly other divisions if other divisions join us for a DCM. It’s always nice to get to know more people, and it’s overall a fun way to get out of the house and not think about homework for a bit. I hope to see you all at future DCMs! Make sure to say hi to me if you see me there!

13 | CLUB SPOTLIGHT: LOARA

spotlight:

LOARA KEY CLUB PRESIDENT’S PROFILE name: TRINA THAI school: LOARA KEY CLUB class: 2023 Hi, my name is Trina Thai and I serve as Loara Key Club’s President! I mostly spend my time procrastinating or playing games, but when I'm not home...I enjoy walks and hanging out with my friends (safely of course)! You don't really need to do much to entertain me, so I'm just the total package already 🙄 <3

- fun facts 1. I have double jointed elbows <3 2. My bedtime is usually 4 am 3. …and my hands are 7 inches long?

what legacy do you want to leave behind?

A legacy I want to leave behind is to have people see key club as another fun activity and not a forced requirement. We still are just kids in highschool and I believe that key club can get too much not only for board members but general members as well. I would want to make sure Loara key club continues to express a genuine and enjoyable passion for the club.

what made you want to be president?

Like I stated previously, my passion began growing as time went on. I realized my dedication towards the club, leading to my ambition by taking a step forward and applying for a board position for my home club and DLT. As that term was ending, the only option was to continue my key club journey by becoming president.

why did you join key club? I first joined key club because it seemed like a fun opportunity to take as a freshman. At first I went to events because, sure it was enjoyable, but in the back of my mind I would be thinking about the hours I was getting. Gradually, I realized how much it’s made me grown as a person and introduced me to new connections and friendships, growing my passion even more.

what are your goals for the 2021-2022 term? My goals for this term is to increase participation. Though I have a good amount of people going to events, I believe there is so much more I can do. Some students have a closed mind and stereotypes what key club is. On the other hand, some members haven’t found their passion because they don’t know where or when to start. A little push and persuasion, I hope, will introduce students to the same amazing experience that I have being in key club.

when was your key club moment? My key club moment has to be officially becoming president. I feel very fulfilled in my involvement with this club.

KEEP UP WITH LOARA! CONTACT THE PRESIDENT!

In the months of September and October, Loara was able to accomplish raising over $500+ for PTP. Specifically, for the month of September we received third shining club of the month. We’ve also received the same award for the month of October with an addition being most funds raised! Our officer, Jazmin Gonzalez, also received officer of the month for September so W 💪 For the next month, November, I am continuing to fight for first shining club of the month through our high spirits and participation!!

hmm…. i don’t remember anything that was too memorable

i don’t remember exactly how old i was—maybe 4 or 5 years old—but I remember i got my finger stuck in the shower drain…it kinda hurt LOL :/

Natalie Sheng | Executive Assistant

Ashlyn Wong | Service Projects Coordinator

In elementary school I attended an after school tutoring program and I couldn’t figure out how to unlock a door so I got stuck inside the bathroom. It was kinda traumatizing but really funny now that I look back!!😹 😹

When I was in second grade, I used to go to an after-school program to learn Chinese, and at that time my friends and I loved to collect acorns during recess. We'd put them in our desks which were the type that open up from the top, and one day I came back to class and realized that a bunch of larvae had been born inside my desk. After that, we weren't allowed to touch acorns and the entire class had to leave the room while the teacher cleaned it.

Helen Tran | Executive Assistant

Sofia Ysabel Gange | Fundraising Coordinator

i personally don’t remember this but my parents laugh and tell me about it all the time! when i was little, my parents would always make me take a nap after drinking a bottle of milk. this actually ended up conditioning me to associate the bottle of milk with naps, and even if i was literally playing my hardest and having fun, i would just automatically get drowsy and take a nap once i finished my bottle.

I was going through airport security in Japan, and they stopped to ask me why I had a pair of scissors in my bag when sharp objects weren't allowed. I had to fight through tears as I told them it was an accident. Thinking back on it now, I thought it was funny how I went through another country's security a few hours prior, and they did NOT say a word.

Sania Usmani | Executive Assistant

Anika Kasula | Fundraising Coordinator

I was at an Easter Egg Hunt at the park when I was younger, and I got lost, so a Park Ranger had to take me up to the front building. They announced my name over the intercom HAHA and besides my mom being mad at me, they gave me a lollipop and balloon so it was fine in the end LOL

I remember going downstairs in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve to eat the cookies we left out for "Santa Claus" after I realized that the legend himself was exactly that...a mere legend. The cookies were delicious btw.

My funniest childhood memory would be when I was racing with a friend and I tripped on her foot and fell face first into a mattress. (Her foot’s okay though :))

One time I was racing my friend at an ice skating rink and I tripped on a bump in the ice and completely ate it! Is that funny?

Joanne Lee | Historian

Megan Tran | Spirit Coordinator

AH um this isn't really THAT funny, but someone took a birthday photo of me like 4 years ago. AND ISTG I LOOKED SO MISERABLE IN THAT PICTURE. i mean it wasn't funny at the time, but now i look at it HAHAHAA

My funniest childhood memory was dressing up as a werewolf for Halloween and going door to door hissing at people. I was kind of a furry and I don't regret it.

Annie Le | Historian

Jasmine Tai | Spirit Coordinator

I don’t quite remember and don’t recap anything.

in one performance i did, i was assigned to a dance group (i’m horrible at dancing) and during the performance, i entered the stage 10 seconds later and always missed my cues which is really funny to watch now LOL

Kaylin Chan | Historian

Saadhvi Narayanan | Spirit Gear Coordinator

Getting misunderstood by my friends after finishing a sad book and crying. In the past, I loved reading during breaks, and one time I had just finished reading a sad portion of a book, so I started crying (I had no filter back then). When my friends saw me, half of them started laughing and the other half started throwing snacks at me -- since I loved food the most back then -- which led to recess eventually becoming a very strange, funny food fight sight.

I would always ask for my grapes to be peeled before I could eat them when I was young.

Tina Tran | Tech Editor

Allan James Quintos | Member Recognition Chair

One time I accidentally ate an ant. It was spicy. And I indulged a lot of milk and juice after that

Although my childhood years feel like a blur, one of my favorites has to be a time where I peed myself multiple times over Kirby stickers. I would pee myself almost twice or more times every week because my teacher gave a Kirby stickers and when we reached a certain amount, we were able to get a prize, but if you went to the restroom, she took away a Kirby sticker. I guess I was so dedicated to my Kirby stickers that I allowed myself to pee my pants. ;(
