ALL ABOUT KCFW MEET OUR DESIGNERS CATCHING UP WITH KCFC
K Phil Willoughby, Esq. | CEO
ansas City Fashion Week could be described as the "time and space nexus" of fashion industry entrepreneurs in the Midwest. For fifteen seasons we have been honored to plan and execute KCFW, bringing together hundreds of professionals twice each year (time) in one venue (space).
Our sponsors, this season led by Oak Park Mall, A to Z Productions and others, have demonstrated an equally sacrificial commitment to incubating new fashion-focused companies, as well as showcasing established regional and national brands. With hundreds of individuals and companies collaborating on each runway show, one key challenge for KCFW staff is how to provide you, the fashion industry patron, information about those who contribute to the production of the nation's largest regional fashion weeks. You are now reading a new initiative which we believe will assist in showcasing the hundreds of talented entrepreneurs you are seeing during the runway shows. As you interact with the pages in your hands or on your phone, you will see an extraordinary amount of talent. As a supporter of KCFW, your engagement helps to provide a needed platform from which our local and regional industry professionals can find greater success. We are confident you will be impressed by the quality contributions of our fashion industry this week! Sincerely, Phil Willoughby, CEO Kansas City Fashion Week, LLC

DEVIL DOLL BY AUDREY LOCKWOOD Devil Doll by Audrey Lockwood derived from a longtime passion for creating, as well as a childhood nickname. With her mischievous ways, her parents nicknamed her "Devil Doll" at a young age and little did they know it would become the name of Audrey's ready-to-wear business. Audrey recently showed her first runway collection on the Kansas City Fashion Week runways this past fall. Her collection was retro and quirky, inspired by Wes Anderson and French fashion icons, such as Brigitte Bardot and Francoise Hardy. Audrey recently graduated from Stephens College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Product Development. She additionally studied at London College of Fashion, and worked as a design intern at Kohl's Corporate Headquarters as an undergraduate student. She has won the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund twice and has been chosen to present her work to the CFDA. Audrey continues to constantly learn and develop herself as a designer and also has an extensive background in retail. As a designer and entrepreneur, she channels an edgy, retro style that always maintains a feminine edge. She uses bold color and strong texture throughout her work to dress the girl boss to which everyone is undeniably drawn. Audrey is heavily inspired by vintage dress and pop culture and uses those references to create conceptual collections. Her designs are all about empowering the boldest of women. All of her garments are available as custom made-to-measure pieces in her current line, Devil Doll. In her free time she enjoys fashion blogging and traveling with her pug, Athena. Audrey uses conceptualization, illustration, patterning, and sewing garments to clothe the women who are making waves in the world.

A few of her biggest accomplishments was earning the title Designer of the Year at Phoenix Fashion Week 2016, and achieving the Pins and Needles Designer of the Year in 2015. Barbara likes to create pieces that are structural, sophisticated and detail oriented, while still showing the silhouettes of the female body. She also creates one of a kind jewelry pieces for both men and women. She sees fashion not as labels, but as a way people can express themselves without saying a word. As she likes to say, “Dare to Wear.”

TOPPING DESIGNS - DUANE TOPPING A Denver native, Duane Topping was born and raised in east Denver. After serving in the military for over a decade, he retired in 2012. Duane then moved back to Denver, where he experienced a difficult time adjusting into civilian life with PTSD as a constant demon. His service in the military exposed him to the ugliness of war and gave him a jaded view of the world. Following his love of art and fashion, he taught himself to sew in the fall of 2016 as a way to escape the darkness. He found peace in the creative process, and Topping Designs quickly grew into one of Denver’s top design houses. Duane takes inspiration from those experiences, and each garment reflects a step on his journey.
18
Since 2016, Duane Topping, and Topping Design’s, has shown throughout the country, including runways during New York Fashion Week. His most recent publication found his garments published in Vogue China. The muses for Duane, however, are still rooted in people. His hope is to pass along the peace he found through fashion. Like himself, every person is different and has their own journey and obstacles to face. Duane says, “This is what makes them beautiful. Clothes allow us to be who we want to be, to transcend the barriers placed around us, and be who we aspire to become.”

J. TIERNEY DESIGNS Originally from Sacramento, CA, Jennifer Tierney is intrigued most by lines, movement and creating shapes through space. Fashion & costume design was always waiting in the wings past a 17 year professional ballet career. Ms. Tierney has shown Collections for West 18th Street Fashion Show in Kansas City, MO as well as Kansas City Fashion Week. Each Collection is unique to itself in theme and design. LAUREN BANDER Always knowing that she wanted to be involved in the art industry somehow, it began with Lauren wanting to draw and paint. Other than the cross stitching that her grandma had taught her, sewing and fashion didn't cross her mind until later. Eventually Lauren traded in her pencils and paints for needles and fabric. She found a new medium that she loved working with, and knew from there what she wanted to do. She studied Fashion Design/Merchandising at Dominican University and got the amazing opportunity to study in Paris at the Paris American Academy (PAA) under some of the industry's top professionals. She began her own line and now designs women's clothing specializing in dresses for every occasion (casual to couture), while beginning to introduce ready-to-wear separates. The designs are feminine and flirty, whimsical and ethereal. Each piece using lots of fabric and exaggeration to give extra movement and drape to the look. She wants to bring a couture feel to the everyday wear of women. One of her main goals she hopes to accomplish with her designs is to show that fashion does not just have to come from places such as New York or Paris; it is here in the Midwest as well. While she gathers inspiration from everyday life and experiences, the greatest inspiration for her line comes from her love of Paris. Vividly remembering the architecture, language, culture, and the overall feeling of the city, she uses that as inspiration for all of her designs, hoping to bring a little bit of Paris to the Midwest. Some of Lauren’s greatest accomplishments have been getting the opportunity to show in New York during Fashion Week, and having some of her designs used in the Bronx Diba/Luichiny shoe campaign for the last five seasons.
MADDIE LUCILLE - MADELINE KIM Maddie Kim is currently a senior at Iowa State University studying creative and technical apparel design. Maddie Lucille designs ready to wear garments with emphasis on contrasting silhouettes and unique textures. Focus on the intricate details of each garment creates one-of-akind pieces inspired by earth's natural elements. Maddie first developed an interest in creating garments back when she was 10 years old and would superglue fabric together to create skirts. Since then she has increased her knowledge in the apparel industry through experiences of internships at LoveShackFancy in NYC and A&F Headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. She has been a national scholarship recipient of the YMA FSF in 2018, showed a collection at Accademia Italiana's annual Fashion Show in Florence, Italy, and spent many hours in the sewing lab.
30
In addition to launching her brand in Kansas City Fashion Week, Maddie hopes to create ensembles that are inspired by high end designers but are much more approachable and realistic for a wider target market to wear.
LUCIA'S SARTO - NATALIYA MEYER Nataliya is a Kansas City-based fashion designer, and has developed the successful line, :Lucia's Sarto. Fashion has been woven into Nataliya from a young age. She is obsessed with her work, devoting almost every minute of her adult life haunted with making clothing; its creation, its fit, and its design. She makes clothing as close to perfect as possible. Nataliya's goal is to make her customers happy by applying her skill and trade. With a heart for charity work, she wakes up every day hoping her designs will stand out in a crowd. Being from a poor background, Nataliya is self-taught, finding it necessary to alter garments she had on hand to make exciting looks. She finds her inspiration from researching the history and heritage of many parts of the world, which she then translates into "clothing language."
RACHEL POLLAK DESIGNS
Rachel Pollak is the Creative Director and Fashion Designer for Rachel Pollak Designs, which designs fashion for the modern women looking for wearable statement looks. She began to develop an interest in art at a very young age. As a two year old, she began to draw daily. Her drawings included distinctive facial features, fingers, toes, and buttons on clothing. This love of drawing evolved into the love for more 3D art such as apparel design. Fashion for Rachel was an exciting way to express herself, so she began studying fashion design at Johnson County Community College in her junior year of high school. In the summer of 2017, she graduated JCCC with an Apparel Design and Technology AAS degree, with a mission to start her own business. She has over four years of fashion design experience from showing in school shows to NYFW. She participated in the annual JCCC Fashion show in 2016 and won 1st place with her line, “Feeling Good” and third place in 2017 with her line, “Striking.” Rachel Pollak has shown three times with KCFW. She has also shown during NYFW with her F/W 2018 couture collection “Uptown Goddess,” inspired by one of her “Make it Yours” challenge looks. Everything is made locally if possible, to support the local economy and maintain close quality control. She is looking forward to showing her brand, style, vision, and art to a larger audience this season at KCFW.
SHELBY HARVEY DESIGNS Shelby Harvey is a designer based out of Springfield, MO who currently studies at Missouri State University. She has a passion and vision for bridal gowns, but is interested in bringing her unique design perspective into a ready-to-wear line. Her newest collection is inspired by Proverbs 31 and the Virtuous Woman. She has a vision to evoke the modest, fun, fashionable, virtuous woman in all of us. Her past experiences working closely with Bridal Gown designer Hayley Paige and Celebrity Couture designer Asher Levine have shaped her outlook as a young designer and given her first hand industry knowledge. She is so excited to present at her first Kansas City Fashion Week.

he 15th season of KCFW…WOW! Just saying it, it doesn’t seem real. In 2010, KCFW started a new movement in Kansas City’s fashion industry that allows so many talented people to show our city their work, whether they are local, national, or from another country. Fast forward nine years.
Each season of Kansas City Fashion Week brings a fresh perspective of what fashion means to various people. We at KCFW strive to bring our attendees a wide range of designers to show the many talents that lie within our city and beyond. Each designer that shows a collection each season, goes through an application/interview/mentor process before you see their collection on the KCFW runway. Not only are these designers dedicated to their craft and business, but they care about their customers. I continue to be proud and impressed by our designers each season, as they grow as designers and build their individual brands. Thank you to all our fabulous designers that continue to bring fresh and innovative fashion to Kansas City every season. Our runway shows are elevated each season by the high-caliber model roster that our designers select their runway models from. With close to 1,000 models that audition to walk the KCFW runway each season, our designers have very difficult decisions ahead of them when going through their selection process. We are very proud of each model that participates whether they are a returning veteran to KCFW or this is their first season. Thank you for the time you each put into KCFW and your continued support. What you don’t see from the runway are all the people that make the show happen behind the scenes. The style teams, that make the designer’s vision come alive, work long hours to make sure that each model that comes down the runway is flawless. Thank you for everything that you all do to make our shows stunning with each designer’s line. Our hundreds of volunteers that take time to work before, during, and after each show deserve so much credit. They work hard from the time they arrive to the end of the night when they leave to go home and most of the time return to do it all over again the following day. We couldn’t put on a week’s worth of events without these hardworking people that are dedicated to fashion and our city. 40
Documenting every moment of KCFW are our talented group of Official KCFW photographers. They’re there from the start of each day until well after the show is over, capturing not only images of the runway shows but behind-the-scenes shots that show the world all about KCFW and our many participants. Thank you all for your artistic, photographic expertise and we always look forward to seeing all of the wonderful images that come from each season. KCFW would not be possible without the continued support from our many generous sponsors and partners. These businesses believe in KCFW and continue to help us grow every season. We all thank you for your patronage. The Directors, Planning Team, and Staff of KCFW never can receive enough credit, in my opinion. This team of people work year-round to bring you all what you see twice a year. They work very long hours and love what they do. They love fashion and they love our KCFW community, and it shows with each passing season. Thank you for dedicating your time and your heart to KCFW. You are all appreciated beyond words can explain. Last but certainly not least, our event guests. Without you all, everyone involved with KCFW would not have an outlet to share what they are so passionate about, their work. We thank you for continuing to return each season to see the new collections and for supporting our participants and KCFW. Thank you all from everyone at KCFW and especially from me. I continue to be amazed by our fashion community. KCFW continues because of you all and I could not be more grateful to be able to continue to share my vision of this event with you every spring and every fall. Look for more exciting things to come over the years. We never stop dreaming and working on making you all proud. Teisha Barber, President Kansas City Fashion Week, LLC
