TEISHABARBER PRESIDENT
Welcome, to the 22nd season of Kansas City Fashion Week! We are so appreciative of every single person that has participated and supported KCFW. We would not be where we are today without you!
We are beginning our third year as a founding member of the CFDA Connects program. We are very excited about all the upcoming programming opportunities that we are able to bring to our participants and network in Kansas City
and the Midwest region. We continue to work with the CFDA Connects team to come up with new and innovative content that we are sure our supporters will find beneficial.
We have been been working very hard on the relaunch and rebranding of our nonprofit, Fashion Arts Fund (FAF) led by Startup Consultant, Jennifer Lapka. Formerly known as Kansas City Fashion Council, Fashion Arts Fund will take advantage of the many offerings available to us through our affiliation with CFDA Connects. In addition to professional development programming from CFDA Connects, FAF will offer post-secondary fashion degree scholarships and structured mentorships to fashion entrepreneurs.
With our 22nd season, there will be a full week of KCFW events. Our cocktail kickoff party, Bubbly + Bow Ties, is back after a short hiatus during the pandemic. We have also added a new Designer Collections Gallery exhibit, in partnership with Weinberger Fine Art, that will be run the entire week of Kansas City Fashion Week, 3/05/23 - 3/11/23. These gallery collections will showcase three KCFW designers in an immersive, art-focused presentation format. KCFW is also bringing new training runway hair and makeup workshops to our hundreds of stylists that work with us each day to achieve each designer's desired look for their models.
Your support means so much to us. Cheers to the 22nd season of KCFW! We will see you again soon for our 23rd season scheduled for September 16th -23rd , 2023!

From a young age, McCartney Segalo dreamed of one day creating her own clothing line. In her free time at a young age, she would sew and put together many different outfits Eventually she realized that her love for designing alignedmorewithswimwear

Shespentmanyyearsresearching, planning, and executing a vision of how she wanted to go about starting her own swimwear brand. All her time and energy she put into her swimwear line eventually paid off and the luxury swimwearcompany,McCartneyQuinn, wascreated

I am excited to follow in the tradition of my CFDA colleagues by joining City community to support the extraordinary Kansas City Fashion W organization, led by CEO Phil Willoughby and President Teisha Ba respected partner of the CFDA Connects program amplifying fash America, the work of KCFW is evidence to the national reach of Ameri and the immense talent that exist in towns across the US. I’m inspired b tenacity during these challenging times and I’m grateful that they, understand the power that fashion has to drive growth in our careers, and economy May KCFW endure forever and always as a place wh thrives
I am thrilled to greet the Kansas City Fashion Week community and to congratulate you on another season of monumental growth! I am honored to work with such passionate leaders through the CFDA Connects program such as your CEO, Philip Willoughby, and President, Teisha Barber I applaud Phil and Teisha for continuing the work in Kansas City to build, expand, and amplify platforms and opportunity for fashion creatives & professionals in this region
Elliot Carlyle Consulting Director, CFDA Connects
I must also salute Jennifer Lapka for accepting the charge to lead the Fashion Arts Fund and all the exciting initiatives, activations, and programming that lies ahead The worldwide pandemic of 2020 put many movements on hold COVID-19 was an upset that none of us were prepared for, and I believe we are all still collectively healing from its affects in our own way However, this moment gave us an opportunity to reflect, refresh, renew, and even restart some things I am happy to
see the that while we have the right to be bitter about circumstances, the launch of the Kansas City Fashion Arts Fund is a result of choosing to be better. I am committed to the mission of CFDA Connects to “amplify fashion across America” through our programming initiative with these respected regional fashion organizations. Kansas City Fashion Week will always be near and dear to our heart as a founding Affiliate participant in the program. Phil and Teisha have served on our CFDA Connects Leadership Committee since its inception in 202. Their engagement is just a testament to the pride, enthusiasm, dedication, and belief in the talent that hails from the Kansas City region.
I heard there’s been a lot of celebrating going on because of the Super Bowl game! All hail the Chiefs…let’s show them what these Kansas City Fashion Week can do. I’m sure everyone involved in this show would agree that fashion is a sport too!
Thank you to the entire staff, models, designers…everyone! Thank you for welcoming me with such warm hospitality I have been honored and excited to return with the CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Steven Kolb, in 2021 This year, I’m elated to be present with our history-making President, CaSandra Diggs
We came from New York because fashion matters here in Kansas City as well as anywhere
CaSandra Diggs President, Council of Fashion Designers of America
CATE SPENCER
“I don’t like to feel plants in water. It bothers me.” The irony escaped Cate Spencer as she spoke those words to those gathered around to watch her photoshoot, as she is always wrapped in a plant tattoo that extends around her body, and she was, literally, standing in water.
The water she stood in was the Atlantic Ocean. The setting was a photo shoot during the annual KCFW Adventures Caribbean cruise.
The setting was starkly different than her everyday life in Iowa. Cate, you see, is a farm hand. Kansas City Fashion Week models come from every conceivable background. On any given runway there will be models whose day job may be physician, accountant, business manager or student. In that respect, Cate’s background is similar to many other models who take to the runway, but her history and culture have taken her on a most unusual path to Fashion. After losing her mother young in life, Cate and her brother were raised by her father. Being raised in an all-male environment impacted her life and gave her a perspective that has served her well in her journey. Her father and brother taught her “independence” above all. The home was filled with love, but also the expectation for Cate to work hard, be selfreliant, and focus on her goals. Cate applied those principles as a high
50
school student when she began power lifting competitively. Power lifting isn’t extremely common for high school women, and Cate was unable to find a suitable competitive group that challenged her. After looking at all options, she chose the most competitive group of athletes around to train with – her high school Varsity football team! This future model spent the last two years of her high school training with – and competing with – the Varsity football team. The football team challenged her and pushed her to success, as she attended college on a student-athlete scholarship for powerlifting.
After an injury cut her athletic career short and she returned home, she maintained her rigorous workout regimen as she settled into her daily existence as a bookkeeper and general farm hand for a large family farm. Soon thereafter, as she developed her online portfolio and began to attract attention, her life was changed when it was suggested she may enjoy modeling.
Not knowing anyone involved with KCFW, Cate drove down to a casting. To her surprise she
made the roster and was selected by more than one designer.
“Modeling in KCFW has been a dream. It has changed my life” she said.
KCFW celebrates each and every model who graces our runway. Like Cate, each has their own unique path in their modeling journey. Whether an accountant, student or farm hand, once they get on the runway, they are all referred to with the same word – model.

How did you get into modeling?
My dream was to have my own photography business. As time went on, my friends and family would always tell me that I would be a great model I never saw it but I was willing to give it a shot I would try and try but growing up it was very hard to get in the industry. I wanted to give up. But, I kept working and starting to envision myself on that runway and posing for that camera. After a lot of effort it’s all coming to fruition and my dream is becoming reality.
What has been one of your favorite experience in modeling?
This experience with KCFW has been one to remember! Being able to witness and be apart off the promotional shoot is something I am going to be forever grateful for. Getting myself out of my comfort zone and putting myself out there is something I truly needed. I have always been nervous when modeling. But since this opportunity I have gained so much knowledge and confidence. Learning and growing has to be one of my favorite parts of this fantastic experience
What are some other personal interests?
I love drawing, reading, meditation, nature, and music! High school art classes was one gateway to a peaceful day at school. I loved putting all of my ideas on some paper and it turning out awesome. When reading, non-fiction is definitely my go to. I love refreshing my knowledge on subjects like meditation practices, psychology, and spiritual learning. Going on a walk and listening to some of my favorite music is the most peaceful of them all I love being able to go clear my mind and practice my walk like as if I’m on the runway
What are you involved in aside from modeling?
I work full time as a personal shopper and honestly just figuring my life out. I’m only 19 and I have a lot to figure out. I have been practicing making my own bleach art hoodie into a business. It’s taking a lot of time, practice, and effort but surely I’m getting there!
