MEET THE DESIGNERS KCFW ADVENTURES GOES CRUISIN' SHOP THE RUNWAY LOOKS
02
In 2010, before the first Kansas City Fashion Week, we developed an official, intentionally simple, long-range business plan: Stay in existence to host a second KCFW. That’s it. That was the plan.
PHILIP O. WILLOUGHBY CEO
KCFW 2011
As any new venture, KCFW began with less-than-little, and had to build its own reputation and brand in a difficult and competitive industry. Now, with over sixhundred designers having shown, when we remind ourselves how our organization has developed into the quality platform it has become, one clear principle continues to ring true: KCFW is not about us. KCFW only exists to provide the canvas on which gifted artists in the fashion design, modeling, photography, styling, hair and make-up, and event planning industries share their talent.
In the pages of KCFW Magazine, and on the runway, you will see the results of hundreds of fashion-related industry professionals that have collaborated to support our local fashion industry.
KCFW 2020 S/S
Fortunately, we soon had to replace our initial business plan with a morecomprehensive approach. As we begin our second decade of producing a fashion event we hope makes you and Kansas City
proud, we will continue to be focused solely on advancing the business interests of the many fashion-related businesses with which we have the honor to partner. By your attendance with us this week, you are a key element of that partnership. On behalf of the hundreds of small businesses hosting you this week – Thank you! Philip O. Willoughby, CEO City Fashion Week

Designer Molly Fralick was born in Tampa, Florida but raised in Eastern North Carolina, where she calls home. Her interest in fashion started at a young age from when her mother, Linda Fralick, was working in a sewing hall. Upon graduating high school, she obtained an Associate in Arts; Transfer from Craven Community College in New Bern, North Carolina. After receiving her associate’s degree a year later, she joined the United States Army as Military Police officer. After serving her time for our country, she went back to school to pursue her dreams in the fashion industry. She has since stayed in Missouri and found her fashion degree program at Missouri State University to pursue a degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising.
a.f.o.m. Designer Amanda Casarez is a professionally trained fashion designer and visual artist with a focus on womenswear fashion. As an Alumna of the inaugural class for the DC Fashion Incubator at Macy’s Metro Center (DCFI), she established her brand as a designer-in-residence in 2015, and with continued involvement with DCFI and in partnership with Macy’s where she released a capsule collection sold at Macy’s in Las Vegas Fashion Mall. She presents across the US, including NYFW, NFW, PHXFW, and KCFW. She has worked with other brands to create awareness in the gap surrounding the lack of representation of designers of color in the fashion industry and creating opportunities for sales and exposure. She looks for inspiration in all that surrounds her. She focuses on fashion as an art of transformation while basing her designs on her own personal dress code: tomboy chic with a bit of grunge.

Any Old Iron is the brainchild of designer and stylist Andrew Clancey. The label's name is rooted in the olden cry of a scrap man collecting metal with his horse and cart, and it also hearkens to Clancey’s family scrap metal business which was founded in 1872. “Any Old Iron,” is also an Old English music hall song which references a young man’s sartorial dandyism – a quality that is distinctly English and ever-present in the brands aesthetic. In October of 2014, Any Old Iron moved it’s store to Nashville, Tennessee from NYC looking to dress the city’s musicians and fashion-forward locals. Now a showroom, Any Old Iron’s clients include Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Cher, Ozzy Ozbourne, Kate Bosworth, Taylor Swift, Elton John, Miranda Lambert, Cardi B, and the Jonas Bros to name but a few.

camille alexandria Carlea Badolian is a fashion design student graduating this year from Missouri State University. She has always loved fashion and started making clothing as a child for all of her dolls using baby wipes. As time went on, she began designing her own clothing; while she was in high school, she began making clothes for others. Carlea originally started college with the intention of being a lawyer, but her passion for design could not be contained, and she eventually changed her major. During this time she began to thrive, winning 3rd place in the “LBD” category at the Fashion Group Internationals Scholarship competition in 2020. The following year, she placed first for an internship in the Sustainability category. The internship was with project runway designer Lela Orr at her Dallas-based brand Ferrah.
carl’s bad designs MacKenzie Greckel, the designer behind the label Cicada Camp Co., is an Omaha native currently finishing her last year as a Visual Art student at The University of Kansas. Greckel has shown two collections throughout her career at Omaha Fashion Week. In 2020, Greckel showed a 12-look collection made entirely of sustainably soured materials she had at hand while in quarantine. She was awarded the Emerging Designer Golden Shears award and continued creating until her next collection was complete in 2021. Greckel showed Cicada Camp Co.’s second ever collection as a headlining designer at Omaha Fashion Week. At the University of Kansas, Greckel is an Undergraduate Research Student and focuses her studies on the fashion industry - specifically sustainable fashion. Greckel finds it her job as a maker and creator to create in the most ecologically friendly manner. She also naturally is drawn to the creative possibilities and challenges of unconventional materials. Because of these two passions, Greckel’s Garments are all one-of-a-kind made entirely from found items ranging from electrical wire to carpet insulation. As a visual art student, Greckel approaches each of her garments as she would a piece of art and uses a number of techniques (painting, macrame, sculpture, weaving, beading) she has learned throughout her education. Greckel utilizes color in all of her pieces and wants to break the stigma of sustainable/ecofriendly items being dull colored. Cicada Camp Co.’s garments are gender fluid and invite all people to get excited about sustainability in the fashion industry. Greckel has lived and designed in Kansas for the past four years while receiving her education. As a final hurrah before graduation, she would like to show work in the state that inspired and taught her all she knows about being a hardworking woman, student, and designer.

house of pamela renee When Kelso first started her brand, she was designing conceal and carry western wear. Since then, she has expanded into artistically pushing the classic definition of western wear. The definition of togs is simple: to be or get dressed for a particular occasion or activity which fits perfectly into the niche she keeps finding herself in. She learned to sew at a young age as a trade skill in her family. That combined with never finding anything she wanted in the store lead to her love for design. She started sewing and designing her own clothes. In her career she’s worked in at least five sewing factories and screen-printing warehouses. IronTogs is a clothing company that’s a little bit biker, little bit rebellious, eccentric, and a whole lot of country-western. Kelso’s inspiration comes from the idea of an artistic nomad seeing the world on an Indian motorcycle, interpreting what they see and feel and putting that into their art. Additionally, she draws a lot of her inspiration from spaghetti westerns.

Lucia's Sarto specializes in custom-designed clothing for women, men, and children. Behind Lucia’s Sarto is clothing designer Nataliya Meyer. Nataliya always knew she was going to be creating clothing. It was somehow woven into her, just like learning to speak or how to write. She believes beauty will save the world. Almost every minute of her adult life, she is haunted by clothing - whether it be its creation, its fit, or its design. Her process starts as an inspiration for something she sees, hears, or reads. It then evolves into images that would in some way in her mind relate to the clothing she’s creating. She always wanted to be noticed in a crowd. Being from a poor background, there were no funds available for her taste, so she started altering things that she had. Much of her inspiration came from researching the historical heritage of many parts of the world. Everything she sees, she absorbs in her mind and translates it into clothing language. Her style of work is very diverse, but however different the clothes may be, the quality is always the highest.

MadHouse is a young contemporary boutique offering unique pieces to achieve effortless style. Although she doesn’t design the pieces herself, the collections are carefully curated by the store owner, Madison Moore. Madison has always stood out in a crowd and never was afraid to take risks in fashion. As she grew older and realized not everyone felt this way, she wanted to share this confidence with others. Madison was an intern in Milan the Summer of 2017 where she was invited to fashion week presentations and attended her first market as a buyer. Summer of 2019, she was an ecommerce intern in New York City. With the buying and e-commerce experience, she decided to launch her own online boutique in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. She opened her store at the Iron District. Today MadHouse is carried in The Kindred Shops as well. MadHouse was runner up for Best Of KC in two categories: Best Women’s Clothing Store and Best Boutique. Madison wanted to bring a shopping destination to Kansas City for the girl who loves to standout and look effortlessly chic. Her S/S 2022 collection showcases unique styles. Madison hopes to be a driving force in the growth of the Kansas City fashion community and prove you don’t need to move somewhere else to have a successful fashion career.
madhouse David Minh Moore is beyond thrilled to be presenting his first fashion collection. As a young child, he spent many hours drawing pictures inspired by images he saw on greeting cards and in coloring books. Those little childhood doodles would eventually lead this Vietnamese-American Army veteran to a successful 20+ years career at Hallmark Cards as a production designer. David has been involved with several Employee Resource Groups at Hallmark, including the Military Interest Group and Hallmark Employees Reaching Equality (LGBTQ+). He served on the Asian American ERG Steering Council for 6 years and was the 2015 and 2018 Chair of AARCH, Asian American Resource Community at Hallmark. In 2016, Hallmark introduced #my5days, where employees in creative roles are given 5 days to step away from their everyday tasks to explore, learn, think differently, and renew. For his first #my5days, David took the time to go back and explore his first creative passion of fashion design. He started a 365-day challenge to create a new design sketch every day for a year, which he successfully completed. At the age of 48, this inspired him to go back to school and pursue a degree in Apparel Design and Technology at Johnson County Community College. What started as a #my5days project for David turned into a fantastic #my5years. As a designer with a passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion, David combines design aesthetics, apparel construction techniques, and a love of textiles to create beautiful special occasion wear with a compelling story of discovering one’s voice, amplifying otherness, finding tribe, and belonging.

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Minc Mason was attracted to sewing at an early age. He began to learn his craft through Fashion Design and Construction Courses as well as Costuming at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts and Manual High School in Kansas City. Over the next several years, Mason explored many different sewing endeavors which led to the cultivation of the products he designs and constructs today. Minc Mason has opened his very own design studio (Studio 3 by Minc Mason) in downtown Kansas City. Studio 3 specializes in the construction of many different mediums ranging from custom bags, car/boat/furniture upholstery, and apparel. Even though proficiently skilled in the auto/home upholstery services, having worked with clients such as "South Beach Classics" and many other high-end vintage car dealers, his love for fashion always seemed to prevail above all else. Over time he has accumulated a quality clientele of professional athletes, fashion influencers, and entertainers. Mason is currently focusing his efforts on cultivating a youth program to mentor students on manufacturing, product design, and construction.

Malissa Long grew up near Beaumont, TX with a Mom and Grandmother who both sewed and, while she was in high school, they worked for a local fashion designer. That and several other life events, made her realize designing beautiful clothing was her calling. She took pattern making as an elective while in college at Sam Houston University majoring in Fashion Merchandising. Those skills came into play in 2003, when a client at Jo-Ann's Fabrics, in Austin, asked her to make the sample garments for her children's clothing collection and she has been chasing the dream in some form or fashion ever sense. She has shown at Austin, Houston , and San Antonio Fashion Weeks. She developed the Malissa Dress for Burdastyle.com in 2007, a pattern that was easily altered and downloaded over 10,000 times. She is a very versatile designer mostly designing new classics in boutique, cocktail, and evening wear, a MLW (MLWear.com) piece will still be in style several years after it's created. She loves to challenge herself and anything that gives her mind a workout inspires her to create. One way she challenges herself is using alternative and upcycled items in her garments. She use fiber art as a medium to practice her techniques and is a founding member of the Austin Fiber Artist. She has been known to make dresses out of ties, jackets out of bottle caps, and recycle aluminum cans into embellishments for her collections. All of her fabrics are recycled or sustainable;she prefers to consider herself as an eco-conscious designer. She loves creating her own work as well as helping other local designer by patterning, sampling, and even producing their collections. She I currently live near Wichita, KS with her husband and son and is active in the cities art and fashion scene.
mlw - malissa long wear Art has been very important in designer, Jose Ortiz’s life, since he was a child. Until now, he was unsure of what he wanted to do with art. He soon found that designing clothing had always been of interest to me and found that part of art in it. His design style is elegant, sexy, and sophisticated, with special attention to couture details and construction. Jose’s inspirations come from various forms including the environment and its living and non-living organisms that are mystifying and powerful. He is very dedicated to what he does.

gabrielle wussow... INTERVIEW WITH COVER MODEL
KCFW MAG: What are your personal interests? KB: I have fallen in love with working out. I love watching myself improve every day by lifting more weight, doing more reps, or sets. Oddly enough, I love going to work and working as a server. at a restaurant. Even though I’m not working in my desired career yet. I am making money for my future.
KCFW MAG: How did you get into modeling? KB: I started out by getting involved in a KCFW show. My first show was the 2019 F/W season. The confidence and self-love I created from modeling in those moments are what pushed me to follow what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve started to put a greater effort towards putting myself in the direction of opportunity. I’ve been reaching out to a variety of photographers to gain more experience in front of the camera. I plan on using these pictures to put in a portfolio to take with me to New York KCFW MAG: What has your experience been as a model? KB: I have worked with very talented and creative photographers who have a passion for their work. They assist me in pulling out the best version of myself. I try to do anything to get out of 34 50
my comfort zone. Whether that's shooting in frigid conditions, wearing unusual outfits, or posing in ways that I’m not used to. I love the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment that rushes over me while shooting or walking the runaway. KCFW MAG: What has been one of your favorite experiences in modeling? KB: One of my more recent favorite experiences in modeling is walking in the KCFW F/W 2021 show. The experience on the runway is so thrilling and fulfilling! I admired both the designers I walked for so deeply. Which made it even more special. The inspiration behind their work was so empowering and meaningful. The amount of effort and time that went into these designs was unimaginable. I felt so honored that they chose me to showcase their breathtaking collections.
KCFW MAG:Five years from now, where are you? KB: Five years from now, I see myself in New York signed to a big agency carrying out my lifelong dream as a model. Modeling is something that I’ve wanted to carry out in my younger years for as long as the industry lets me. I will have a bachelors degree in Political Science soon. So, whatever state I decide to reside in will be the state that I begin my law school journey with a focus in criminal law.
Kansas City Fashion Week is a nexus of fashion professionals. Featuring local, national, and international designers, each year KCFW produces two full weeks of premier runway shows, enabling designers to collaborate with seasoned stylists, make-up artists, models, and photographers to present their collections in the most professional atmosphere imaginable. Buyers and individual consumers are provided an opportunity to order apparel and accessories shown on the runway, and KCFW provides industry professionals an avenue to showcase their abilities to a national audience. With an unapologetic focus on the business side of the fashion industry, each KCFW event highlights the many facets of fashion commerce. Buyers from retail establishments, media personalities, online apparel entrepreneurs, and celebrities help to comprise an audience for each show, making KCFW a must-attend event for established and emerging fashion professionals. Kansas City has a rich history of fashion success. In the late 1940s, Kansas City's Garment District employed over 4,000 people and boasted that 1 out of every 7 women in the United States purchased garments made in Kansas City. In the successful production of over fifteen fashion week seasons, KCFW has helped refocus the region's attention to the commercial possibilities of a revitalized apparel design and manufacturing industry. Led by an experienced team of fashion industry professionals and event planning specialists, KCFW planners set the standard for fashion event production. Through partnerships with the Midwest's leading companies, KCFW continues to serve as a collaboration for the industry that propels emerging designers to success, as well as providing a rich source of consumer interaction for the established designer. 51
