With a supreme cost of living, WiFi speed, diverse restaurant and delivery options, scenic parks and affordable homes on the market, it’s no surprise that Business Insider, and Finance Buzz, named KC the No. 1 place to work remotely … and Glassdoor put KC on its list as a top city for jobs. Jennifer Lapka

Megan Crook

The KC Circle of Support By KELSEY HAYNES

In Kansas City, there’s a comradery that exists where people are not only proud to claim the heartland as their home, they are genuinely invested in seeing the community thrive. Jennifer Lapka, founder and president of Rightfully Sewn, a fashion-focused nonprofit that provides seamstress training for at-risk women; Megan Crook, advancement and external relations officer at AltCap, a community development financial institution that invests in underserved communities; and the founders of Flexy, a mobile wellness brand that inspires sustainable health and lifestyle changes, Aja James and Mallory Jansen, share their perspective on the unique relationship between KC and local startups. How do KC community members go above and beyond to support local businesses? James + Jansen: Local small businesses are always raising awareness or donating a portion of proceeds from a product. People love to boast about things that come from Kansas City, so even if your brand expands beyond KC, people want to support you so they can say “I knew them when.”

18

C O M M U N I T Y A D VA N TA G E

Aja James; Mallory Jansen

Lapka: There’s so much loyalty and civic pride. At Rightfully Sewn, businesses that support our programs and events receive support from our audience in turn because they support the community – we call it a “golden circle of support.” Crook: Kansas City’s small businesses are the fabric of our community— they’re our friends and neighbors. At AltCap and the Community Capital Fund, we’ve seen an outpouring of support from civic, private and philanthropic communities to unite and provide immediate financial relief to local entrepreneurs. What makes KC a place where ideas can come to life? Lapka: Mentorship is strong in KC. Danny O’Neil, founder of the Roasterie, told me once to never silo. Reach out and figure out how to partner, become stronger together and cross pollinate your audience. In larger markets, companies are more likely to withhold information and be protective of their information, but in KC there’s an equal dose of competition and comradery.

James + Jansen: KC is a great place for entrepreneurs. There are a lot of resources – free resources, places to practice your pitch and grants you can apply for. There’s so much offered for people who want to start a business that the only thing that could stop you is yourself. Crook: We have great people here with a strong sense of collaboration that constantly builds on our potential to grow and put ideas into the world. We strive to create an equal playing field in KC for minority entrepreneurs. What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs in KC? Crook: Lean into your relationships. Leverage and participate in your community; it’s important to do your best to understand the resources available to you. James + Jansen: Don’t put yourself in a box; make a lot of connections. There are people who want you to succeed. Lapka: Always be chatting. If you are always in the community talking about what you’re doing, it’s easy to find support. n KC OPTIONS 2020 | 2021

At its heart, the Kansas City region is known for a can-do attitude, which translates into an impressive set of attributes across a broad range of industries and a diverse workforce. So, how does Kansas City work? …with entrepreneurial spirit. In the tradition of Cerner Corporation, Garmin, Hallmark Cards, Inc. and H&R Block, startups find the support they need to flourish at the crossroads of America. A thriving “1 Million Cups” community is powered by KC’s own Kauffman Foundation and supplemented

KC is the No. 1 city in the world for sports architecture being home to HOK and Populous. MARIA MAFFRY

The Art of Community Building IN THE HEART OF AMERICA By ANN CLIFFORD

Maria’s family immigrated from Indonesia when she was two, choosing the heart of America in KC over the coasts. Knowing no one, the family created a community among the neighbors and friends who welcomed them. “That was the beginning of what became a passion for community-building,” she says. “After college, I returned to Kansas City with an even greater appreciation for what the city stands for.” What she loves most is the accessibility to the arts. From the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kansas City Ballet to the live music scene and inspiring performances at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Maria notes everything is attainable for all to experience. The accessibility continues with philanthropic endeavors. “Kansas City is very collaborative and deeply-connected,” Maria explains. “That makes it easy to get involved in what you’re passionate about and help make KC even better.” Along with the arts, Maria engages in a wide range of community initiatives. One focus is empowering women and girls through organizations like Women Who Mean Business, WIN for KC, the Women’s Employment Network, and the Urban Land Institute’s Women’s Leadership Initiative. “People here are focused on finding ways to lift each other up,” she says. “Through it all, there’s a unifying belief we all have that KC is great, and everybody needs to know it.” n

ARMAAN AHLUWALIA

Armaan Ahluwalia has carved out a niche spot for the Kansas City Chiefs as a business analytics manager. “When I’m in a data meeting, I’m the sales guy. When I’m in a sales meeting, I’m the data guy,” he says. It’s a job he admits has evolved beyond his wildest dreams. Armaan started as an intern in 2015 while working on his MBA. Now, his responsibilities include tracking and analyzing data that helps build partnerships and maximize revenues for the NFL’s reigning champions. But it’s not just Super Bowl victories that make him happy to be here. “Kansas City reminds me of my hometown, Winnipeg, Canada,” he says. “The people are very welcoming - and the commute is a breeze.”

Since moving to the area in 2016, Armaan and his wife Amelia have lived on the Country Club Plaza, and now in North Kansas City. Though he’s a relative newcomer, Armaan’s coworkers often ask him for restaurant recommendations. After all, he loves to research and read reviews. But that doesn’t mean he’s glued to his computer screen 24/7! “I’m actually pretty social,” he says with a laugh. In fact, when out-of-town friends come to visit, this analytics guy has his playbook ready. First some KC barbecue - preferably from Q39 - followed by a leisurely stretch at the Boulevard Brewing Company Beer Hall. All topped off with a visit to the Liberty Memorial for its panoramic view. “This place is a hidden jewel,” Armaan beams. “I really, really enjoy living here.” n

Builds on KC Fashion By RANDY MASON

“I’m a huge fan of graphic tees.” Courtnee White’s simple explanation of The Love Spot KC Shop’s origins. A caseworker for a social service agency, Courtnee began researching ways to start a T-shirt company of her own in 2019. She found that few were owned by women and many lacked diversity. “I was raised by strong women. I’m always looking for things that can be uplifting and empowering for future generations,” Courtnee says. Despite having no formal training in fashion or business, she opened the doors to her online store in January 2020. Shirts bearing phrases like “Be Kind Sis,” “Brown Sugar Mama” and “Curly Girl Tribe” are the company’s hallmark. Several speak directly to the idea of self-care, a practice Courtnee believes is particularly important.

32

liveworkKC.com

Another shirt says simply, “Trap Music and Coffee Please”— two things this business savvy woman admits she can’t live without. It’s not uncommon to find her getting happily caffeinated in Midtown at Monarch Coffee or Messenger Coffee in the Crossroads. KC Daiquiri Shop is another of her favorite stops. The Black-owned business not only makes fantastic drinks, she says, it also serves outstanding Cajun food. That’s a form of self-care too! Many of the photos featured on thelovespotkcshop.com picture Courtnee’s friends and family wearing her designs -- a “real people” approach that has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. Those same folks are a big part of Courtnee’s success. It’s why she chooses to build her business in the town where she was born and raised. As she says, “I want to grow, but I never want to lose that personal touch.” n

WORK

Jimmy Bolanos is a true world traveler. He’s lived in Michigan, California and South America, but called Chicago home until he transplanted to Kansas City in 2015. Prior to being recruited to work in financial administration at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, he hadn’t considered KC as a place he’d want to live. After his first visit, he was sold. “Most of the places I’ve lived are melting pots, so I appreciate the culture and diversity in KC. The energy of entrepreneurship is present - and there are the obvious benefits like cost of living. It’s a great place to build a life and not have to struggle,” Jimmy says. “The amount of dynamic organizations and career pathways are limitless. KC offers the gamut for people in various stages of life.” Through his job, he’s participated in leadership programs through the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, as well as other civic groups and activities. When he’s not at the office, or working on his MBA through the University of Missouri - Kansas City, Jimmy enjoys supporting local startups and small businesses. Among his favorite places to hangout is the pet and pint hot spot, Bar K, located near the bike trails and sand volleyball courts along the Riverfront. “It’s exciting to see KC continue to grow, especially in the downtown area, which has completely boomed with new businesses,” says Jimmy. “I can see myself calling this home for the long term.” n 36

Kansas City Tops the List in Affordability and Quality of Life There’s no doubt that Kansas City is abundant in art, culture, shopping and sports, but if we’re being practical, numbers matter too. Fortunately, the Kansas City region scores just as well in cost of living as it does in quality of life. Kansas City’s local real estate market is strong and thriving, a trend that is expected to continue in the years ahead. When stacked up next to comparable cities like Dallas, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco, Kansas City’s home affordability stands above the rest. According to the National Association of REALTORS®, the median home price in the Kansas City region is just over $230,000 as compared to $280,000 for Chicago and over $1 million for San Francisco. Kansas City also takes top rank when looking at livable home space for the investment. On average, a buyer looking in the $250,000 to $300,000 range in Kansas City can anticipate homes with two to four bedrooms. That same money in Chicago would likely equate to a one to three bedroom home or a studio to one bedroom home in San Francisco. In that same $250,000 to $300,000 price range, you can buy 1,000 to

WHEN STACKED UP NEXT TO COMPARABLE CITIES LIKE DALLAS, CHICAGO, SEATTLE AND SAN FRANCISCO, KANSAS CITY’S HOME AFFORDABILITY STANDS ABOVE THE REST.

2,300 square feet of house here in Kansas City. In Dallas, that money will get you 800 to 2,000 square feet and even less in Atlanta, at 700 to 1,600 square feet on average. And those numbers don’t change much if you’re looking at a home in a higher price range. Kansas City comes through for the win in number of bedrooms and square footage for the price, regardless of the price range. But time is money too, and establishing a positive work life balance makes drive time another highly important factor. More than 80 percent of Kansas City residents report commute times under 30 minutes, regardless of which side of the state line or which community they live in. From golf course communities to lake living and urban condos to quiet culs de sac, Kansas City has an option for everyone. If you’re looking at moving to the Kansas City area, partner with an expert. Not only are REALTORS® experts on the city, but they are knowledgeable professionals who are dedicated to finding you the right home for you in the perfect location. REALTORS® are the best resource to begin your homebuying journey.

Ride in

KC Style By RANDY MASON

Location, location, location. That old real estate adage has served Kansas City well. Trade trails and river traffic fueled the young region’s growth. Then came railroads and highways connecting America in every direction. Now the Hyperloop is on the horizon! It sounds like science fiction--Kansas City to St. Louis in only thirty minutes via a magnetically levitated, electric-powered pod. But Virgin Hyperloop is eager to prove the technology works. Proponents say the straight path along I-70 makes a lot of engineering sense, and it could be ready as soon as 2030. Well before then - Spring 2023 - Kansas City International Airport will unveil a “new front door” to the region. The $1.5 billion New Terminal at KCI promises an array of amenities, improved parking and consistent customer care. Getting to and from a city is one thing. Getting around easily IN it is another. In 2016, the KC Streetcar opened a 2.2-mile starter route between the River Market and Union Station through the heart of downtown. Recent approvals for expansion will continue this route another four miles south to the Country Club Plaza. Smart City technology makes it easy to access route information and other downtown data. But

even if you miss your ride, another approaches in less than fifteen minutes. The Streetcar has been free to ride since day one. It’s part of RideKC, which also offers veterans and high school students a zero-rate fare on buses. The RideKC Freedom plan does the same for patrons with disabilities, with the ultimate goal to make service fare free for all riders. Tasked with connecting a sizable metro area that crosses both county and state lines, RideKC has grown increasingly creative. Along with MAX rapid transit buses on several key routes, it’s adding more and more Uber-inspired on-demand services to the traditional transit mix. Thanks to an initiative called Enterprise Rideshare, commuters can even partner up with co-workers to carpool in a vehicle from Enterprise. RideKC Bike also boasts an impressive fleet of bikes, scooters and e-bikes that can be conveniently rented and returned. Year after year, studies show that KC enjoys some of the least congested roads in the country. Should you choose to cruise them in an electric-powered vehicle, you’re in luck! Believing “if we build it, they will come,” energy utility Evergy has installed more than 2,000 EV charging ports across its Clean Charge Network. Range anxiety begone! n

KC Has Heart By ANN CLIFFORD

VIBRANT, ECLECTIC COMMUNITIES ARE THE HEARTBEAT OF KANSAS CITY Stand at the bend of the Missouri River, just where it turns eastward, and listen. You’ll hear it. Pause in the midst of your early morning shopping at the City Market. You’ll hear it there, too. And you’ll hear it loud and clear as you lean back to enjoy Theatre in the Park under the stars.

It’s the heartbeat of Kansas City. Pulsing through the Heart of America’s rich history and diverse neighborhoods. Shining through the friendly smiles on the KC Streetcar and high fives in the parking lot at Arrowhead Stadium. Around every corner and across two states, 18 counties and more than 50 communities, the beat goes on.

Find Your KC Rhythm The city’s eclectic mix of neighborhoods blend seamlessly to create the geographical equivalent of a sweet jazz melody, with different riffs and beats to fit how you want to live, work and play. At the heart of it all, downtown Kansas City hums with thriving neighborhoods. Explore the historic 18th and Vine District, the birthplace of Kansas City jazz, or discover the River Market’s seamless blend of commerce, business and residential. Then, head to West Bottoms for a truly vintage vibe and one-of-a-kind antique shopping. Follow the beat to the East Bottoms for a wideranging choice of music on one of the four stages Continued

Turn south to discover Midtown neighborhoods, including historic Hyde Park and Union Hill. Follow the tree-lined boulevards to the Country Club Plaza, where you’ll find Spanish architecture, high-end shopping, and on Thanksgiving Day, a festive holiday-lighting celebration that officially kicks off the season for Kansas Citians.

Add Suburban Harmonies A range of communities and neighborhoods surround the downtown core, each with its own personality and must-visit destinations. From walkable downtowns to spacious suburban communities, there are options to fit all kinds of lifestyle wish lists.

Known to locals as the Northland, neighborhoods north of the river blend smalltown charm, big-city conveniences and wideopen spaces. Parkville is a perfect example, with a Main Street named the best in Missouri by USA Today and a 115-acre nature oasis for hiking, birdwatching and relaxing waterfall views. To the west you’ll find a true melting pot of cultures in what locals call the “Downtown KCK” area, check out the Avenue of Murals celebrating the city’s diversity. Then, explore Strawberry Hill, where Slavic immigrants settled in the late 19th century. For another peek into the past, visit the Old Quindaro museum to learn more about the area’s history as part of the Underground Railroad. If you head southeast, you’ll discover Lee’s Summit, known as America’s great neighborhood for its affordable housing and recreational amenities, including the new Summit Waves Aquatics Facility. Travel southwest to find Overland Park, named the best place to raise a family by WalletHub, scoring high on overall affordability, the quality of schools and opportunities for fun. Nearby Lenexa earns its “city of festivals” moniker with events like the annual Spinach Festival, honoring Lenexa’s heritage as the spinach capital of the world. Down the road, Leawood delivers a range of outdoor shopping areas featuring local boutiques and national retailers. Olathe, which ranks third on Money, Inc.’s list of best places to live in the Midwest, is recognized for its sculptures located throughout downtown. Shawnee is home to the 1,600-acre Shawnee Mission Park, which includes popular spots for boating, fishing and sail boarding.

Venture Off the Beaten Path Go outside the metropolitan area to discover vital communities like St. Joseph, which celebrates living an uncommon life, full of quirky sensibilities, entrepreneurial dreams, and big fun in a small city. Or prepare to be surprised by Miami County, with its rolling hills, wineries and big cat sanctuary. Follow your heart. No matter where you go, you’ll hear it: the energetic, unmistakable pulse that is the heart of KC. n

Education

IS A

KC Partnership By KELSEY HAYNES

KC is all about collaboration. The pride that reverberates throughout the region is a key contributor to the collective pursuit of access and opportunity for all learners. Entrepreneurship and innovation are influenced and strengthened by the many partnerships between schools, community resources and businesses. The Real-World Learning initiative, led by the Kauffman Foundation, works with area school districts to add a business-to-education component to classroom learning. This initiative aims to ensure that by 2030 all students graduate with at least three college credits, employer-recognized skills, a network of connections and a clear plan for transitioning from high school to career. Similarly, the Missouri Innovation Campus is a collaboration between the University of Central Missouri and R-7 Lee’s Summit School District that provides high demand training and educational opportunities for student and adult learners. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with the necessary tools to gain workforce-ready applied learning skills. Resources like KC Scholars, Skilled KC and KC Degrees, are key to enhancing the depth of the regional talent pool. Degree in 3 at the University of Kansas helps to maintain the region’s higherthan-average degree completion rate. As demands evolve, regional leaders continue to work together and develop alternative methods of learning. KC’s tenacity, paired with its philanthropic spirit, has contributed to the success of programs such as Operation Breakthrough, a nonprofit providing a nurturing and safe educational environment for underserved children. No matter where you are in your educational or career journey, KC is committed to your lifelong learning and development. n

This region’s commitment to arts and culture can be seen at every level. The “Sky Stations” sculpture atop Bartle Hall in downtown Kansas City may be the most prominent of the many public artworks on display around the metro. Just blocks away, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts blooms from the hillside. Lovely to both the eyes and ears, it’s an ideal performing home for the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Ballet and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Those long-running operations share the Crossroads Arts District with an eclectic array of small galleries, studios, shops and performance spaces. To the south, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (complete with a giant bronze spider) adjoins the campus of the Kansas City Art Institute. The venerable Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is also a neighbor. The Nelson holds more than 35,000 masterworks from around the globe, including an unforgettable outdoor sculpture park. Other area museums offer plenty to explore as well. The National WWI Museum and Memorial honors the Great War’s participants and puts the conflict in context. The Strawberry Hill Museum in Kansas City, Kansas, celebrates the Croatian community that flourished there in the early 20th Century. The International Jazz Museum at 18th & Vine vividly explains the art form’s origins and evolution, while the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum next door makes a great case that baseball can bring us together. And though it hasn’t opened yet, The Rabbit hOle, the World’s First Explor-A-Storium, promises a unique, immersive trip into the joys of children’s literature. n

Signature songs? Ours is one of the best. Almost everyone knows “Goin’ to Kansas City!” The truth is, great music has always lived here. Today, home-grown artists like Janelle Monáe and Tech N9ne are spreading their hometown love with the world. And that’s just the beginning. Samantha Fish, for example. The young guitarist released her first album at sixteen--and has been shredding the blues ever since. Danielle Nicole grew up playing bass in the band Trampled Under Foot with her brothers. In 2019 Danielle’s solo album “Cry No More” was nominated for a Grammy. Continued

Making Movies, a root-rock band that shifts smoothly from cumbia to psychedelia, grabbed some Grammy love too--for a collaboration with Latin superstar Ruben Blades. How often do you see a mother and son singing together for David Letterman? Well, Madisen Ward & The Mama Bear did just that, breaking through with their hit single, Silent Movies. And unless it’s a classical concert, who hauls a harp onstage? Calvin Arsenia does. To accompany his silky, soulful R&B compositions. The harpist also appears in a short film about singer/songwriter Kevin Morby—a perfect example of the genrejumping that routinely takes place here. Those musical mashups often occur in clubs like Knuckleheads, the Record Bar or Green Lady Lounge. When quarantine put everything on pause, the musical community crafted an epic response. KC Bands Together featured all of the artists mentioned above plus Victor & Penney, Hermon Mehari, Hembree, Radkey, Julia Haile, and more than twenty other acts in a two-night live streamed concert event. n

Style has been defined as “an expression of individualism mixed with charisma.” With that definition in mind, whether you look back or forward, Kansas City’s style makers are on the cutting edge. The Historic Garment District Museum of KC chronicles the city’s fashionable past, including a chapter where one-in-seven American women owned garments that were designed and manufactured in KC. Today, a vibrant design and maker community is building on history to make bold fashion statements. KC Fashion Week boasts bi-annual runway shows featuring local, national and international designers. The annual West 18th Street Fashion Show pushes fashion forward by featuring local designers’ wearable art, and in 2020 went virtual with a live broadcast at the Broadway Drive-in Theatre. KC-based designers – many of whom hone their craft studying at the Kansas City Art Institute or Stephens College – are reimagining men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, swimwear and even socks. Time in a Bottle

ANDY RIEGER TURNS A SIXTH-GENERATION DISTILLERY INTO ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S By KATIE VAN LUCHENE

The first time Andy Rieger saw the Rieger Hotel sign at 1924 Main Street in Kansas City he was two years old, riding on the shoulders of his dad, Thomas. In 2010, Andy returned to the address for the grand opening of The Rieger restaurant and introduced himself to co-owner Ryan Maybee as the only living descendant of the family that owned not just the hotel, but one of the country’s most successful distilleries before Prohibition. It was the spark of a legacy reborn. Within a few years, the two were business partners and J. Rieger & Co. became

the first distillery to open in KC in nearly 100 years. Now it’s Andy’s two-year-old son, Hogan, who has a shoulder-high perch in a beautifully restored 60,000-sq.-ft. building that once housed Heim Brewery. Andy and Ryan had dreams of doing more than just producing great spirits; they wanted to celebrate the company’s KC ties, create a destination that would help build the brand and encourage growth in what was once known as the Electric Park neighborhood. (A young Walt Disney, it’s said, modeled Disneyland after the former amusement park.) While J. Rieger is indelibly linked to this town, the partners reached out to nationally recognized talent to develop their liquors. Tom Nichol, formerly with Tanqueray, created a signature Midwestern Dry Gin using five botanicals. The late Dave Pickerell, who’d gained fame at Maker’s Mark, was instrumental in developing Kansas City Whiskey; the addition of 15-year-old Spanish sherry gives it a distinctive taste. And master distiller Nathan Perry was with Boulevard Brewing Company before joining J. Rieger in 2015. Continued

ABOUT THE COVER

Other releases include Caffé Amaro – a rich, bittersweet version of coffee liqueur, and a highly prized, limited edition Monogram Whiskey, which changes every year based on creativity, partnerships and what the team calls “dumb luck.” On any given day, the entire current Rieger family could be in residence. Lucy, whom Andy calls his best friend, is brand director; the two were married in 2015 in true KC style with Hotel President and the Kauffman Center providing gorgeous backgrounds. Spirited young Hogan has the run of the place and the couple welcomed their second son, Harrison, in the spring of 2020. Then there’s Pepper, an adorable rescue pup that serves as the distillery mascot. But it’s not just his household members Andy considers family. When the COVID pandemic shut down Kansas City in mid-March, his first thoughts weren’t of his investment or the company’s bottom line; it was “I can’t lay any of these people off.” To keep 65 staff members employed, the company began bottling to-go cocktails, then switched from booze to hand sanitizer; within a month they’d produced 200,000 containers of Rieger’s Remedy. Demand was so high cars would line up for hours at the distillery to pluck one jug from masked employees. In August, J. Rieger & Co. began reopening on a limited basis to comply with the city’s health mandates. It will eventually return to its goal of welcoming 120,000 visitors a year. As the doors open it’s clear to see, there’s plenty to indulge in: The 3,000-sq.-ft. display of artifacts from the company’s history. The Monogram Bar overlooking the distillery room with its handsome copper stills. The Hey! Hey! Club, a swanky cocktail lounge modeled after the 1930s jazz club where Count Basie used to play. And event spaces and meeting rooms found throughout the building. All are encouraged to skip the stairs descending from the second floor in favor of the 40-foot slide nicknamed O! Chute, with a nod to the O! So Good tagline created by original founder Jacob Rieger’s son, Alexander. Andy’s favorite place is the barrel rickhouse, stacked floor-to-ceiling with gallons of golden liquid treasure yet to be tasted. “It’s one of the things that sets our distillery apart,” he says. “We have enough space so we can store our barrels here rather than offsite. It’s a unique experience and it belongs right here. Not Kentucky, not Scotland, not Ireland, but Kansas City.” And we’ll drink to that. n
