Right Here, Right Now Kansas City hustles. From art to engineering, our region exudes innovation and creativity. A steady, rhythmic heartbeat propels us forward. Now more than ever, we’re constantly looking to the future. After all, we have some pretty big things in store. Opening the doors to the first stadium built for women’s sports in the world. Hosting matches for the FIFA World Cup 26™ — and that’s just soccer. Even with major happenings on the horizon, we take the time to raise a glass to the present. In 2023, we said hello to a brand-new airport terminal, one that’s been dubbed world-class by countless national media outlets. We toasted — and frequented — a number of award-winning restaurants and bars. Oh, and we threw a massive, take-the-day-off level parade to celebrate another big win for the Kansas City Chiefs. We’re proud of our past, excited for our future and living in the moment. It’s the perfect time to do life in KC. We’re consistently ranked as a top city for families and early career professionals. We’re making headlines and staying humble ‘cause that’s the way we do it. You’ll find enough activity to fill every spare moment on your calendar, or a slower pace of life lying just below the surface. An art fair, live music on a sunny afternoon, a hike through nature. There’s just something about KC. The people. The places. A palpable energy flows through the streets. As you flip through the pages of KC Options, you’ll see that energy and excitement depicted, story after story. You’ll meet the everyday extraordinaires that make Kansas City so much more than just a place. This is Kansas City. The air is electric with anticipation and yet, the present satisfies. We invite you to experience the voltage and soak in the now.

Kansas City — or KC Heartland, as we say — is a flourishing metropolitan area in the heart of the Midwest. So great it has to fit in two states, the region overflows with lifestyle options, from quirky historic neighborhoods to urban high-rises. The best part? You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more welcoming community, because “Kansas City Nice” goes a long way. Stick around and you’ll find that KC beams with pride and the region is buzzing with excitement for what’s on the horizon.

KC.org
It’s been a momentous few years for sports in Kansas City. The Chiefs Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles warmed our hearts in February 2023. Three days later, a huge downtown parade welcomed the victors home. Football also popped up in April 2023 when the NFL Draft set up shop at Union Station and the lawn of the WWI Museum and Memorial, showcasing KC on a global stage. We celebrated all over again — this time in front of the whole world! The three-day event was a sort of practice run for 2026, when Kansas City will host FIFA World Cup™ soccer matches and thousands of international visitors. Planning for more than 30 days of games, practices and Fan Festival™ activities is already underway. “I’m very proud that we’re the smallest city chosen,” says Katherine Holland, executive director of KC2026 — the nonprofit organization tasked with carrying out KC’s World Cup strategy. Speaking of soccer, KC Current made a mad run to the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League finals. Though they lost the championship game, they gained thousands of new, passionate fans. The team’s new Berkley Riverfront stadium is slated to open in time for the 2024 season. More on KC Current on pg. 22. The KC area also loves its hoops. With a 2022 National Championship title, the KU Jayhawks remain a top competitor in collegiate basketball. In 2023, the region’s eyes were on the Kansas State Wildcats in the NCAA’s Elite Eight — a thrilling game that went down to the wire. Iconic Kansas City event hotspot, T-Mobile Center, hosted the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament, as it will again in March 2024. And for the first time ever, the Big 12 Women’s Championship tips off in the same arena. Did someone say baseball? Catch America’s favorite pastime with the Royals, where a young nucleus of hitting and pitching talent is changing the game. But here’s the real buzz — plans for a downtown stadium are in the works, putting the team right in the heart of it all. For many, the biggest story of all might be the arrival of sports betting. Kansas legalized it last year — so if you’re west of the state line, prepare to study up, parlay down and (possibly) count your winnings. n

Kansas City is described as the “Soccer Capital of America” — and the region makes a compelling case for the title. Vast youth soccer complexes with wallto-wall matches every weekend. Rousing chants of enthusiastic fans rooting for professional teams. City-wide preparations to host match play during the FIFA World Cup 26™. But here’s what really seals the deal: the excitement about what the city’s professional women’s soccer team — the Kansas City Current — is building along the banks of the Missouri River. In the short few years since the KC Current brought the National Women’s Soccer League back to Kansas City, the team hasn’t wasted any time making its mark with multiple years at a title run, shattering attendance records and opening a new state-of-the-art training facility. So, it wasn’t entirely surprising when the team’s founders, Angie Long, Chris Long, Brittany Mahomes and Patrick Mahomes, unveiled plans to build the first-ever stadium for professional women’s sports — any sport — in the world. Match-ready for the KC Current’s 2024 season, the privately funded,
show-stopping stadium in Berkley Riverfront Park features views of both the Missouri River and the downtown skyline. The mold-breaking doesn’t stop on the pitch, either — the design and construction of this groundbreaking venue was brought to fruition by a predominantly women-led project team, with a shared goal of creating world-class athlete and fan experiences. Each of the 11,500 seats in the stadium’s horseshoe configuration feature close-to-the-action views. Stadium amenities are set to be top-notch, with plenty of KC flair. From a food and beverage menu curated by award-winning local chefs, Colby and Megan Garrelts, to easy access that will be further enhanced by the KC Streetcar line extension, the stadium is destined to be a favorite for soccer fans. And when there’s no soccer on the schedule, the facility will transform to showcase concerts under the stars, festivals and other community events. Soccer Capital of America? Kansas City is clearly all in. KC Current season ticket demand for the stadium’s inaugural season has already exceeded expectations, making women’s soccer one of the hottest tickets in town for years to come. n KC OPTIONS | 2024

Designed with Heart KC’s brand-new airport terminal takes flight. By ANN CLIFFORD
Kansas City’s new $1.5 billion international airport terminal goes above and beyond to turn airport time into a top-flight experience. Opened in February 2023, the single-terminal, 40gate airport was the largest infrastructure project in the city’s history. And right out of the gate, the new KCI won the hearts of travelers, along with recognition as the “Best U.S. Airport” by TravelAwaits. Here’s a peek at what you’ll find when you land in KC. Continued
KC OPTIONS | 2024
27
STUNNING ARCHITECTURE WITH AN EMPHASIS ON EASE
Every inch of the terminal’s 1.1 million square feet combines cutting-edge design with travel convenience. The check-in hall makes an impression with its soaring ceilings, natural light and massive 732-foot Missouri limestone wall. Past security, the H-shaped building features parallel concourses linked by a pedestrian passage with expansive views of the airfield. The one-of-a-kind views continue up to the door of your plane. The sleek glass — and climate-controlled — boarding bridges make KCI the largest all-glass boarding bridge operator in the U.S.
INCLUSIVITY DOWN TO THE DETAILS
From the beginning, “accessibility for all” was the guiding principle for the design and construction team, who consulted with local experts from organizations including The Whole Person and Variety KC to meet diverse needs. Thoughtful touches include counters at wheelchair-accessible heights, visual paging boards for deaf passengers, a sensory room, an inclusive play area and all-gender restroom options. For anxious or firsttime flyers, a travel experience simulator allows passengers to practice the boarding process, take-off and landing.
A HEARTFELT KANSAS CITY WELCOME, WITH A SIDE OF BARBECUE
From the moment you step into the airport, you know you’re in KC. More than 80% of the brands featured throughout the airport are local favorites, from iconic Charlie Hustle T-shirts to Boulevard beer. A taste of Kansas City is on the menu across 30+ restaurant options, including Bo Lings, Brown & Loe, Pigwich and Urban Café. Of course, there’s barbecue. As the only airport in North America with barbecue smokers in-house, KCI takes the city’s barbecue tradition seriously. Concourse A features Meat Mitch BBQ, while Concourse B hosts the Kansas City Barbecue Experience, which serves up award-winning cuisine by the winner of the annual Made for KC BBQ Championship.
ARTISTIC FLAIR EVERYWHERE YOU TURN
Thanks to Kansas City’s One Percent for Art program, $5.6 million was invested in sculptures, paintings and installations by 28 artists. One of the largest installations, Fountain (KCI), pays tribute to the City of Fountains with 20-foot-tall elliptical rings lined with white LED lights. And look to the ceiling as you travel the moving walkways to see Cloud Gazing, recognized among the 100 most successful public art pieces in the world by the CODAawards.
SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE FUTURE
The second U.S. airport to earn LEED Gold certification, the new terminal is designed to be energy efficient and resilient. The complex runs entirely on electricity, with the nation’s first allelectric airport shuttle fleet, and plans call for the construction of a solar farm to convert all operations to green energy in the years ahead. n

KANSAS CITY TOPS THE LIST IN AFFORDABILITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE There’s no doubt that Kansas City is abundant in art, culture, shopping and sports, but if we’re being practical, numbers matter too. Fortunately, the Kansas City region scores just as well in cost of living as it does in quality of life. Kansas City’s local real estate market is strong and thriving, a trend that is expected to continue in the years ahead. When stacked up next to comparable cities like Austin, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco, Kansas City’s home affordability stands above the rest. According to the National Association of REALTORS®, the median home price in the Kansas City region is $334,000 as compared to $362,000 for Chicago, $496,000 for Austin, $793,000 for Seattle and more than $1.3 million for San Francisco.
Kansas City also takes top rank when looking at livable home space for the investment. On average, a buyer looking in the $275,000 to $400,000 range in Kansas City can anticipate homes with two to four bedrooms and averaging between 1,200 to 3,000 square feet.
But time is money too, so establishing a positive work life balance makes drive time another highly important factor. Kansas City’s average commute times is under 25 minutes, regardless of which side of the state line or which community lived in.
And Kansas City comes through for the win in number of bedrooms and square footage for the price, regardless of the price range.
From golf course communities to lake living and urban condos to quiet culs de sac, Kansas City has an option for everyone. If you’re looking at moving to the Kansas City area, partner with an expert. Not only are REALTORS® experts on the city, but they are knowledgeable professionals who are dedicated to finding you the right home for you in the perfect location. REALTORS® are the best resource to begin your homebuying journey.

> A TOP 10 INDUSTRIAL GROWTH MARKET
CBRE, April 2023
INDUSTRIAL POWERHOUSE

Divine by Design How community and creativity helped propel architectural juggernaut, David Manica.
>
By WESTON OWEN
It was in fifth grade when a young David Manica made a profound discovery; the boy who loved sketching houses during Sunday church service learned he could make a living being a professional designer, dreaming those drawings into reality. Little did this ten-year-old know that this realization would lay the foundation on which he’d build his entire life, creating some of the most widely known and recognizable buildings in the world. From an early age, David — a product of Kansas City — has always loved the sense of community and support from his hometown. And born of that passion was the inspiration to help give back, not only to the familiar faces he’d grown up around but to others all over the globe. “Early on, I wanted to make a difference,” said David. “I aspired to design structures that conveyed my passion for architecture. One thing I learned very quickly was that if I wanted to work on buildings — specifically arenas, stadiums and entertainment venues where tens of thousands would gather — there was a strong likelihood that my path would keep me rooted right here in Kansas City, the sports architecture capital of the U.S.” So, fresh out of architecture school at the University of Kansas, David explored local firms to forge his path. That’s when he landed at HOK Sport (now known as Populous). “When I first joined the team, computers were just making their way into the field, so the only computer they had was in the supply closet,” he smiled. “As other architects would come in for their pencils, pens and tracing paper, I was the kid in the closet learning how to design. It was a unique and fortuitous beginning to my career.” The confines of that closet created something magical. He hit his stride and relentlessly worked his way up within the architecture firm, establishing himself as one of the top sports architects in the United States. Then, in 2007, he decided to venture out and open a business of his own — Manica Architecture. Launching his own firm was a calculated risk but one he felt confident taking. As projects began coming in — primarily overseas — his international success translated into domestic opportunity, as he expanded his team, business and U.S. footprint and, years later, worked his way into a new industry: Kansas City’s cocktail scene. Continued “I love to travel and experience different cultures. So when I’m in a new city, I draw inspiration from what its nightlife offers — both from design and unique experience,” he reflected. “I wanted to bring some of that luxury and international flavor back home.” A self-proclaimed “side hustle,” David made his statement in 2017 with The Monarch Bar — a chic, contemporary bar bursting at the seams with style and class. Its immense success paved the way for Verdigris and The Mercury Room — two elevated cocktail experiences where the ambiance is rivaled only by the quality of the drinks served. His newest location, Bar Medici, mirrors the international inspiration that’s continuously served as a blueprint for his ventures. As David often reflects, “Those who are fortunate enough in their careers, not only get to choose what they do but who they embark on that journey with.” For this Kansas Citian, that journey began sketched on a piece of paper and huddled in a supply closet. Yet, through determination, drive and support from his community, David Manica has forged forward, a foundation paved and defined by design. n

> Acts of Kindness: A KC Story For Noeida Kuhnert, family and community mean the world. By ANN CLIFFORD
Noeida Kuhnert’s Kansas City story begins in Cuba before she was even born. Her parents and brothers fled the country in the early 1960s with little more than the clothes on their backs. Once in the U.S., the family was “adopted” by the First Southern Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas. The warm welcome they received became a family legacy. “My parents and brothers were greeted at the airport by a crowd of members from the church, the mayor and newspaper reporters,” Noeida says. “Though it was difficult for them to start over, the experience was beautiful. The whole community, churches of different denominations, and businesses came together to help. The sense of support and inclusion is one of the reasons why I chose to stay here, start my career and raise my family.” Noeida carries the spirit of inclusion and giving back through her work and community engagement. An engineer, she has worked for Hallmark for more than 30 years. As the general manager at the company’s Leavenworth facility, she champions the company’s beliefs and values. At my plant, we have a Diversity, Inclusion and Acts of Kindness team that focuses on using our differences to work toward a common goal and make a difference in our community.”
Kansas City’s welcoming nature and inclusivity are at the heart of the region’s strength, according to Noeida. “Born and raised here, it’s exciting to see that Kansas City is booming,” she says. “Just like they did for my family, the people in this community continue to come together to make the city a great place to live, work and make lifelong connections.” n

Engineering His Own Future How one KC transplant has found his groove. By RANDY MASON
Like many of us, Godfrey Echekwu is a big fan of tacos and barbecue. Like some of us, he hits the gym early before heading to his job in the city. Unlike many of us, he faced and overcame
And his time isn’t spent in just an office — he endures freezing temperatures and heat waves to be in the middle of the action throughout the process.
the challenges of coming to a new country just eight years ago. Godfrey was 18 when his family moved from Nigeria to Jefferson City, Missouri. He enrolled at Lincoln University and turned his sights to engineering. “I had a teacher who told us a civil engineer could get a job anywhere,” he recalls. That led him to the University of Missouri Science & Technology in Rolla, Missouri. After an internship with Kansas City’s Turner Construction, Godfrey joined the company fulltime as a civil engineer. “People are surprised that I’m only 26, but I’m good at learning from other’s mistakes. I just don’t like to fail.”
“You need to know how a building is built,” he says. “That means not just sitting in a trailer or inside the office. You’ve got to learn how to keep learning.” Godfrey lives on the Kansas side of the state line with friends from college. The drive to his office takes 20 to 30 minutes — that is, once he’s finished his 4 a.m. workout at Lifetime Fitness. It’s a routine that Godfrey picked up at school, and it includes trying to eat well, too. “I never get tired of plantains,” he says while admitting that a good taco is hard to resist. As for his favorite… Carniceria y Tortilleria in Kansas City, Kansas, gets the nod. “As soon as I tasted it,” he grins, “I said, ‘that’s the one.’” n

KC’s Hidden Gems How KC native, Lisa Peña, is uncovering local history. By LAKEN HORTON
In the heart of Kansas City is an experience that spotlights hidden treasures of the urban landscape. Lisa Peña, the mind behind Urban Hikes KC, has a passion for sharing the narratives, history and vibrant culture that often go unnoticed by visitors and even the most dedicated Kansas Citians. Having always lived in Kansas City, Kansas, Lisa has a deep-rooted connection to her hometown, its history and community. The inspiration for her venture came while listening to a podcast highlighting California’s urban hikes — an experience that involves journeying through a city’s alleys, under bridges and along sidewalks to gain deeper insight into its untold stories. Soon, Lisa began a journey to bring this experience to KC’s urban communities, with a goal to reshape the way people would view and experience the city. Urban Hikes’ four to five-mile guided tours, led by Lisa and her team members, take hikers or bicyclists through a variety of neighborhood options. Every step becomes an opportunity to chip away at surface knowledge and dive into lesser-known aspects of KC, from the historical architecture and artwork to the stories of perseverance etched into the city streets and walls. Drawing on her experiences in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic, Lisa’s ambition for community connection and empowerment shines through Urban Hikes, as she guides each tour with a goal of unity and shared exploration. Each stop unravels a narrative waiting to be heard — from the vibrant Mexican heritage of the Westside neighborhood to the Quindaro Ruins, a key stop on the Underground Railroad and site of the first school for African Americans west of the Mississippi River. For history lovers eager to uncover the layers of Kansas City’s past, Urban Hikes offer a new chance to discover a vibrant canvas of diverse stories, demonstrating that the true beauty of a city lies not only in its skyline but in the intricate tales woven into its streets and neighborhoods. n

If the great outdoors inspire you, get ready for the pleasures that four distinct seasons can bring. Nature’s changes are constantly on display here — from subtle to spectacular — every time you walk, hike, bike or paddle. The only question is where to start! Every city in the metro has numerous parks and playgrounds, with greenspaces that range from cozy and cute to breathtakingly vast. Kansas City’s Swope Park spans 1,805 acres, room enough for the Kansas City Zoo, a treetop zip line and the Lakeside Nature Center. Hiking trails and bike paths crisscross our region on both sides of the state line. Try Johnson County’s Mill Creek Streamway for a walk on the wild side or travel an old railroad right-of-way to explore the Rock Island Trail. Shawnee Mission Park is a recreational treasure, offering paddle boats, horseback riding and an off-leash dog park — complete with its own beach. Rocky bluffs and dense woods make Wyandotte County Park and Lake in Kansas City, Kansas, a great place for both birding and mountain biking. And though it’s not far from major roadways, the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit feels like a world apart. It’s filled with streams and trails, twelve lakes for fishing and an archery range to help hone your skills. When cooler weather rolls in, festive happenings crop up around the region. From autumnal activities at Louisburg Cider Mill to annual lighting ceremonies at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, Powell Gardens and beyond. Undoubtedly, this Midwest landscape has heaps to offer. n

As a Kansas City transplant of almost 15 years, I have explored the ins and outs of the region while raising my now four kids, discovering diverse, accessible and fun destinations. It doesn’t hurt that my role as the owner of Kansas City Mom Collective — a parenting resource site that connects KC parents to resources, information and each other — gives me the opportunity to explore family-friendly attractions all over the metro. Here are some of my favorites.
MEADOWBROOK PARK IN PRAIRIE VILLAGE This golf course turned massive park features three playgrounds including a treetop-themed play area and a charming cafe, The Market. The best feature, though, is the sledding hill that the developers specifically planned for kids, who flock here on snowy days. No matter where you find yourself in the metro, you’ll find parks, splash pads and nature centers to love.

STREETCAR ADVENTURES THROUGH DOWNTOWN The FREE KC streetcar makes for a great urban adventure. We start at the downtown Central Library and take the route to Union Station, which boasts Science City, a model train gallery, featured exhibits, the largest movie screen in the city and a planetarium.
SPORTS FOR ALL There isn’t anything that makes me more proud than our city’s support of the first professional stadium dedicated to a women’s sport in the world. Our kids won’t remember a world that didn’t include a sold-out crowd in an impressive new stadium centered around female athletes. In my kids’ short lifetime, we’ve also seen two Super Bowl wins and two World Series appearances. (And, they get an extra day off school for championship parades!)
BARBECUE When you live in KC, you must have an answer to the question: “What is your favorite barbecue restaurant?” My kids started eating ribs in their toddler years, and we treasure the pictures of sauce dripping down their chins. There is something for every style and perhaps most importantly, you can order meat by the pound (we recommend chopped burnt ends) when cooking is too much effort.
THE NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART It might be surprising that an art museum lands on this list, but hear me out. With family programming for special holidays, along with weekly kid-focused activities, the Nelson is truly a family destination. Our favorite is the Art Course — an annual mini golf course with holes designed after art from the museum. This is also where you’ll find those iconic shuttlecock sculptures that adorn the lawn.
BEST IN SHOW Kansas City attracts all kinds of performances — from Disney on Ice and Monster Jam to Taylor Swift and a lineup of Broadway shows. Our own KC Symphony even has a family series that includes movies on the big screen with live soundtracks, holiday shows and petite performances where the littlest ticket holders can try out instruments. That’s just a small snapshot of all KC offers kids and their families. Follow @KansasCityMomCollective for even more ideas for kiddos in KC. n

Cultivating Community: One Heart at a Time By WESTON OWEN
There’s no denying that Kansas City is a special community — supportive, welcoming and proud of the hidden gem that we call home. So, it’s no surprise that Kansas Citians have rallied around the Parade of Hearts, a public art exhibition representative of, and dedicated to, our diverse and eclectic region. Parade of Hearts was born during the COVID-19 pandemic and intended to help raise funds and awareness for the industries that had suffered the most. Yet this annual installation has achieved an even grander vision in the years since its inception, combining the iconic and beloved KC heart logo with the unique stories, art and design of the Midwest. The hearts, each measuring about five feet tall, are placed around the Kansas City metro area, interweaving a narrative of hope and inspiration. From healthcare to hometown pride, each tells a different story. Showcasing local artists’ abilities, every installation embodies a unique viewpoint and perspective,
all with the goal of bolstering our community. The culmination of the parade is an auction, where every dollar raised is donated and recirculated to specific facets of Kansas City. Those include focused areas of arts and culture, health and wellness, hospitality and tourism, education and minority-owned businesses. Now entering its third year, the he(art) installations have become an integral component of the community — spotted in parks, next to local businesses and alongside busy streets throughout the region. And while the amount of talent and creativity in Kansas City is remarkable, what’s even more inspiring is our ability to band together, as one community, around a common cause. To date, Parade of Hearts has raised more than $2.5 million for local charities. That’s what the Parade of Hearts is truly about — supporting one another through the tough times and the good, giving a voice to worthy causes and elevating everyone that makes Kansas City great. n

THE RESTAURANT AT 1900 Its one-of-a-kind service aligns with its one-of-a-kind location, the iconic 1900 Building in Mission Woods, Kansas. A semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, the restaurant serves modern American-style cuisine and cocktails with creative flair. Its Executive Chef, Linda Duerr, is a past semifinalist for James Beard’s Best Chef: Midwest.
THE TOWN COMPANY This eatery is a downtown star at the Hotel Kansas City, due in large part to Outstanding Chef semifinalist Johnny Leach. His hyper-seasonal menu elevates Midwestern classics and highlights ingredients from local farms. Many dishes get their flavor from the white oak burning hearth in the middle of the restaurant.
YOLI TORTILLERIA The first tortilla bakery to be nominated for a James Beard Award earned Outstanding Bakery honors. Specializing in authentic Sonoran flour and corn tortillas, the bakery is in Kansas City’s Westside neighborhood. Yoli Tortilleria supplies tortillas to many of the city’s best restaurants. More about Yoli on pg. 89.
DRASTIC MEASURES Its eclectic mix of creative cocktails propelled the neighborhood bar in Shawnee, Kansas, straight to the James Beard Awards’ shortlist of finalists for the nation’s Outstanding Bar. The ever-changing menu at this spiritsonly establishment comes from the imagination of founding bartender Jay Sanders. More about Jay on pg. 86.

Three KC-area chefs were recognized as semifinalists for Best Chef: Midwest.
MICHAEL CORVINO Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room in the Crossroads Arts District offers an array of innovative dishes for foodies. The restaurant’s seaweed doughnuts got a shoutout from The New York Times as one of 2022’s most memorable dishes.
NICK GOELLNER In the heart of Kansas City, The Antler Room serves up new menu changes daily with elegant small plates. The restaurant’s name is inspired by a famous Kansas City prohibition-era bar.

Bringing Paris to the Plains Heather White’s penchant for French culture offers a refreshing perspective on Kansas City cuisine. By WESTON OWEN
Kansas City is home to an eclectic, diverse community; personalities and backgrounds of all types abound, woven into an elaborate fabric that creates something extraordinary. This is especially true when lifting the veil of Kansas City’s food scene. Yes, we’re known for barbecue, but international inspiration has congregated to please the palate of any patron. One of the undeniable trailblazers in this food and bev space is Heather White, a Canadian connoisseur whose fervor for hospitality, approachable plates and delectable drinks have positioned her frontand-center among the city’s best. Heather, a Kansas City transplant, had created quite a life for herself in her native British Columbia. A passion for pastries, cupcakes in particular, afforded her the opportunity to open multiple patisseries within her hometown of Vancouver. In fact, her shops — Cupcakes by Heather & Lori — were so popular, a reality television show chronicled her and her business partner’s operations for three seasons. Aptly named, The Cupcake Girls even won a Gemini Award (Canada’s Emmy equivalent) and beat out some of the biggest shows north of the border. So when work opportunities relocated her family to the Midwest in 2016, Heather saw an incredible canvas to create something truly special in Kansas City. “The moment I arrived, I immediately saw the potential this city offered,” she reflected. “The people, the community, the bones and structure were there. I just had to bring a different and unique perspective to the table — literally.” And Heather’s perspective has certainly made its mark. After only a year, her first successful endeavor was co-founding The Russell, a popular and easygoing
restaurant based in Midtown. Its popularity and success helped solidify her place as one of Kansas City’s premier restaurateurs, but Heather was just getting started. Her love for Parisian culture and acute attention to detail is intertwined throughout each of her concepts. Her most notable and popular restaurant, Tailleur, opened its doors in 2021 and exemplifies an ambiance plucked straight from Paris. It yields a very tailored experience (hence the name) to each of its patrons and is revered as one of the best restaurants in Kansas City. Right across the street, Heather introduced Cheval and Enchanté — the former offering up beautiful and thoughtfully-orchestrated cocktails, the latter presenting a myriad of French-inspired pastry and coffee options. Heather also admires her peers that serve up incredible culinary excellence on a daily basis in Kansas City. “Having Tailleur, Cheval and Enchanté within steps of each other, I spend most of my time within this block — that includes for meals, too,” she joked. “Yet there are some incredible restauranteurs in Kansas City that I admire and try to visit as regularly as possible. The team at Earl’s Premier is helping change the game of Kansas City’s seafood offerings. The Antler Room is a must, along with the Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room and so many more. We’re really fortunate to have such world-class options in Kansas City.” What an appropriate designation — Kansas City is world-class. A destination thrilled to embrace the flavors and inspiration of cultures from around the world and also, where top-notch talents see a canvas to breathe life into their culinary masterpieces. To that, we’ll raise a glass. n

Cheers to Beer in KC By RANDY MASON
It all started in 1989. That’s when the Boulevard Brewing Company opened the only brewery in Missouri not named Anheuser-Busch, in a warehouse on Kansas City’s Southwest Boulevard. Since then the world of craft beer has changed exponentially, and microbreweries and brewpubs dot every corner of the metro. Continued

FRESH ON THE SCENE
ALMA MADER BREWING
VINE STREET BREWING CO.
Craft Beer and Brewing Magazine named its Premiant pilsner one of its Top 10 Beers of 2021.
A thriving Black-owned brewery — the first in Missouri — that opened in Kansas City’s Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District in 2023.
BKS ARTISAN ALES Swiped its name from an abbreviation for the Brookside neighborhood. Its flagship brew, Rockhill & Locust, won Gold in the “English Mild or Bitter” category at the 2022 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition.
TRANSPARENT BREWING COMPANY Only a few years old, this Grandview brewery — which shares a home with farm-to-table restaurant, The Chive — focuses on locallysourced ingredients.
CITY BARREL BREWERY
FRICTION BEER CO.
Its audaciously named Rad AF took home the Bronze in the “Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale” category at the 2022 GABF.
Brand new to the Shawnee brewery “hot block,” this new spot offers a music-themed taproom, including a cassette tape mosaic.
RIVER BLUFF BREWING
SERVAES BREWING CO.
New to the River Market, but already striking gold (or silver rather) in St. Joe. Its dark ale “O Brother!” earned Silver in GABF’s “International Dark Lager” category in the brewery’s very first year (2019) and again in 2022.
This LGBTQ/woman-owned brewery in Shawnee has been around a few years — but since they purposefully shy away from flagship beers, you can always catch a new and off-thewall sour here.
GOOD OL’ STANDBYS CINDER BLOCK BREWERY A local fan favorite. Every winter around Super Bowl time, this North Kansas City hotspot brews a batch of Il Padron pilsner — that’s Italian for “the Chief.”
MARTIN CITY BREWING COMPANY Now entering its second decade, Martin City offers taprooms in both Kansas and Missouri.
KC BIER CO. Located in Waldo and focused on authentic German beers. In 2020, its Hefewizen and Pure Pils picked up a GABF Silver and Bronze, respectively.
SANDHILLS BREWING Take flight with this bird-themed brewery. Originated in Hutchinson, Kansas, its natureinspired Mission taproom offers beers for everyone — even beginners.
CRANE BREWING Located in Raytown near the Rock Island Trail, this brewery is perfectly placed for hikers and bike riders to gather. Tacos from the food truck that often parks here add to the fun.
CASUAL ANIMAL BREWING CO. A Crossroads standby that welcomes dogs and dog lovers both inside and on the patio, while serving up a Grizzly Bear Ale that bites in a good way. n

Wild Child
How Jay Sanders’ approach to hospitality has him front and center of Kansas City’s cocktail scene. By WESTON OWEN
Kansas City is rapidly gaining national recognition as one of the top cocktail destinations in the country. While many have contributed to the industry’s meteoric rise, one of the main influences behind its growth is Jay Sanders — owner of the popular, James Beard Award finalist, Drastic Measures and the brand-new wine, cocktail and non-alcoholic bar, Wild Child. A master of creating immersive experiences and dynamic drink menus, Jay has drawn inspiration from over a decade behind the bar, especially in his hometown of Kansas City. He’s certainly seen a lot during that time. Concepts that have flourished and others that have floundered. Yet, above all else, there’s one constant as to what experiences resonate with him most. “I’m always impressed by those who don’t want to bring a New York or LA experience here, but rather work with what Kansas City has to offer. Where you build something that’s true and authentic to our city. Sometimes that’s finding flavor combinations that resonate within our community or developing something special within the city’s pre-existing footprint. Those experiences always catch my attention.” And Jay certainly knows a thing or two about capturing attention. Drastic Measures, a self-proclaimed “rustic, neighborhood bar” with equal parts mood, ambiance, incredible staff and surreal cocktails, was recently a finalist for the prestigious James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar. It’s garnered both local and national attention for its unique and beautiful drink menu, often made up of very few ingredients but done so in an incredibly elevated fashion. Riding the wave of Drastic’s success, Jay recently opened its sister location, Wild Child. While the two bars may only be a few steps away from one another, each exudes vastly different vibes. Drastic, embracing a moodier, darker persona, is in deep contrast to the lively, bright and floral personality of Wild Child. But both exemplify the warm, welcoming setting that Jay is so passionate about: setting a tone for the community to come together, enjoy each other’s company, spark conversation and do so over a thoughtfully-presented, laboriously-crafted cocktail. Jay’s accomplishments have been met with praise and admiration from his peers and he’s fond of the landscape that Kansas City has cultivated. “What makes our city’s cocktail scene so good is that everyone is always very supportive of one another. We know this is an overlooked market, so when somebody does something cool, we meet that with respect instead of envy. And that makes us all work a little bit harder to up our game. It’s a very healthy competition.” As Kansas City continues to grow and become a destination location, Jay is one of the driving forces behind keeping our community truly unique. n

The Humble, Award-Winning Tortilla By WESTON OWEN
How a lifetime of cultural influence propelled Marissa Gencarelli and Yoli Tortilleria onto the world’s biggest stage.

As the lights dimmed and the nominees for Outstanding Bakery reverberated throughout the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Marissa Gencarelli turned to her husband Mark and both exchanged soft smiles. They understood how difficult it was to win a James Beard Award and it was an honor to have even made it this far. By that point in the ceremony, Marissa had already loosened the straps on her high heels. After all, she probably wouldn’t be making the long walk to accept the prestigious award. There was just no way the winners would be seated that far back in the auditorium, she thought. But it was fine. Alongside so many great nominees — some of the best bakeries in the nation — being mentioned in the same breath was enough for her. The crowd cheered as the anticipation grew. Then silence, deafening. “And the winner is…Yoli Tortilleria!” Disbelief and excitement overcame. Heel straps were tightened hastily as Marissa stood and began that long, unexpected walk to the stage. In many ways, it was representative of the long, unconventional journey she’d made to arrive on that spring afternoon in Chicago. Born in Sonora, Mexico to a local lawyer and a teacher from California, Marissa’s upbringing was woven with multi-cultural experiences. From a young age, and as far back as she can remember, her parents instilled the importance of her heritage and the celebration of her culture in all that she did. Every summer, her family would load up their car and travel across Mexico, making frequent stops along the way to experience the rich history and beauty of Mexican culture — including its local flavors and cuisine. “Some of my earliest and fondest memories completely transformed how I perceived Mexican culture and food,” Marissa smiled. “For a young girl, those long trips on unpaved roads could be exhausting, but seeing the countryside and experiencing the culture has had the biggest influence on my life.” Continued

Looking back, those road trips meant the world to Marissa, not only because they offered an authentic, invaluable glimpse into a country she cherished but because they were spent alongside the family she loved. So, once she began a family of her own, it was of the utmost importance to preserve that tradition. After meeting Mark abroad in Italy, they had their first child, Santiago, and moved to Mark’s hometown of Kansas City. They began traveling to Mexico to help pass that cultural love and understanding along to their son. But something interesting happened during those frequent trips. That adoration turned into a desire to bring authentic Mexican cuisine back home. “Whenever we’d travel, we always brought highquality tortillas back so we could enjoy authentic meals throughout the year. But when we ran out, there were never good local alternatives,” said Marissa. “So, nearly a decade ago, I began cooking tortillas myself. Mark and I would improvise, trying recipes that would introduce different flavors and ingredients to our family. We’d cook two to three times every week, which allowed me to put my heart and soul into the food we prepared.” Her focus and dedication to create something authentic served as Marissa’s guiding light and thus, the idea of owning their own tortilleria was born. She and Mark continued prepping and honing their craft, all while holding down full-time corporate jobs and welcoming their second child, Siena, to the world. And then there was the brand’s name. It had to pay homage to Marissa’s history while honoring those experiences that had influenced her path. And that’s how Yoli Tortilleria came to be. Yoli, meaning “to live,” embodies an adventurous lifestyle, travel and memories — fully embracing those bumpy rides and cultural encounters. And the emblem, prominently displayed on every product that Yoli creates, is a representation of Marissa’s mother, who was her biggest inspiration and advocate. Yoli now had an identity and that’s when the magic grew. Local restaurants began carrying Yoli products, exposing the community to incredible Mexican cuisine. Pop-ups showcased the brand, relationships were developed and word spread about this new, up-and-coming tortilleria in Kansas City. That hype — built upon love, hard work, bravery, exploration and passion — eventually led to the long walk one spring afternoon in Chicago. Continued

As Marissa made her way onto the stage, a medallion with James Beard’s likeness — the first of its kind for exemplary bakeries — waited to take its place around her neck. She fumbled through her purse, looking for the scrap of paper she had scribbled a speech on. The spotlight shone bright. All eyes on her. “Thank you. I wrote this just in case and I’m glad I did. Yoli was born out of dealing where life had taken us. We were in a very weird space and reaching our forties and, more than twenty years ago, I’d lost both of my parents. I have now lived most of my life without them. Baking became our therapy. A way to connect and honor my ancestors, in the middle of North America. Thank you for the opportunity and for helping us honor the very humble tortilla. Gracias totales to the Beard Foundation, to our friends, family, our children — Santiago y Siena, who put up with us so much and all our crazy schedules. And our city, Kansas City. Without you, we would not be here, so thank you so much. Muchas gracias.” Long, bumpy road trips paved the way to create the truly remarkable. Genuine desire for others to experience Mexican cuisine created the foundation for Yoli Tortilleria, and the influence and support from Marissa’s family dissolved any doubt from those who discounted her dreams. Now, an excited and invigorated industry is fixated on those humble, award-winning tortillas. n
