Julia Haile
Sings Kansas City’s Praises After a gig at a hotel restaurant, a man approached singer/songwriter Julia Haile to tell her he was moved by her performance of the classic Nat King Cole song “Unforgettable.” “He said it was his late wife’s favorite song, and he started to tear up,” she recalls. “It was a reminder to me of how powerful music can be. The fact that I can evoke those kinds of emotions in people is such an amazing feeling.” As a neo-soul, jazz and funk vocalist, Haile is wellknown on the Kansas City music scene. From 2008

to 2012, Haile was the lead vocalist for MoTown and soul cover band The Good Foot. She joined The Buhs—an 11-piece pop, soul and hip-hop group founded by trumpeter Hermon Mahari—in 2013. Her latest project is full-time solo artist and frontwoman for Hi-Lux. With many achievements under her belt, Haile points to a 2017 showcase at The Folly Theater as one of the highlights of her career. Accompanied by Barclay Martin on guitar, she premiered an original song called “Guide Me” inspired by her late grandmother. “That show was the perfect introduction for putting that song out into the world,” she says. “It

flowed so easily, and we got great reactions from it. That was a recent experience that I felt driven by. It came across beautifully, and people really enjoyed it.” Born in Milwaukee, Haile moved to Kansas City with her family at the age of six. She is a graduate of St. Teresa’s Academy. She studied at the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City but left before graduation to pursue music professionally. “It was pretty clear early on that I was not a scholar,” she says. “I was never good at school work and discipline. Music was always fun for me,
and because I was good at it, I always knew it was what I wanted to do in life.” Although she once considered moving to New York City to attend music school, Haile says she is excited to be in her hometown. She notes that local artists are supportive of each other and there is a push to advance Kansas City’s rich music history. “I’ve decided that Kansas City is an amazing base,” she says. “Even if I get to the point where I am on the road playing shows for several months, I am always going to call Kansas City home. I love this city. It only has great places to go from here, and we have wonderful leaders guiding us forward.
I want the rest of the world to know that there is great stuff happening here.” As Kansas City evolves, Haile is looking forward to the future of her career. She has goals to release more music and book gigs at venues and events around the world. “Sometimes I’ll have a moment on stage when I am taken out of the element of being a performer,” she says. “I realize that I am not being told what to do, I am not at a job that I am not into, and I am in front of people who are really into what I am doing and are moved by it. To understand the allure of Kansas City, we turned to four residents. Enjoying a bite at an East Crossroads hotspot, Brewery Emperial, they shared some unique perspectives on why they choose to craft their story in KC.
What makes KC special?
How is the KC business climate?
Davyeon: “Everybody who’s come here has been very inspired by what’s going on from the tech perspective. Kansas City’s an entrepreneurial town, but I think we just laid low and didn’t really broadcast to everybody what’s going on. I think people are very humble.”
Celina: “I think it’s the best place to start a business and keep a business—definitely.”
Jacob: “Diversity is what I look for, and the inclusiveness, the coming together. It’s kind of nice to see this small city growing up.” Celina: “Kansas City has the convenience and culture of a much, much larger city but the people are way nicer. It’s not so cutthroat-here. There’s a whole community of people out there who really want to help you succeed and do anything they can.” Amina: “I think it’s really important to have a sense of diversity in a city. I think Kansas City is diverse... it’s a place where you don’t feel out of place.”
Davyeon: “We’ve been able – at least on the entrepreneurial and tech side – to get some wins, when you think about startups being acquired by large companies on the coasts. That kind of sets a precedent.”
What keeps you here? Amina: “Kansas City will embrace you no matter the sort of vibe you have or what you’re into, there’s always going to be a place for you … It gives you the feeling of home even if you’re not from here.” Celina: “I could do this in other places, but I don’t think it would be as cool of a city as KC. Cooking was always my passion. But my passion has changed from that to people, so I’ve become more front of the house now. And maybe that passion transferred to people because of the people here.” Jacob: “I found love—or it found me. How about that?”
ABOUT THE FOUR: Davyeon Ross After moving to the U.S. from Trinidad & Tobago in 1996 on a basketball scholarship, Davyeon landed in KC at Sprint, which offered him an engineering job and paid for his green card. He’s now co-founder of ShotTracker, a wearable technology with NBA and NCAA endorsement that provides elite-level analytics to improve the performance of basketball players and teams.
Amina Barnes A Kansas native, Amina found her passion for fitness following her first pregnancy. Now a health and wellness influencer with features in PopSugar Fitness, Women’s Health and Shape Magazine, Amina shares her transformation story as fitness practitioner and indoor cycling instructor while also pursuing a career as a grant/sponsored projects specialist for the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Celina Tio Celina moved from Philadelphia to KC in 2001, serving as head chef at The American Restaurant for seven years, then ran her own restaurant, Julian, for 11 years. Today she runs The Belfry, which features a wide range of bourbon and craft beers and a small menu of creative pub grub. After being named James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef: Midwest in 2007, Chef Tio made national television appearances on the Food Network’s “The Next Iron Chef” and Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters.”
Jacob Maraya Originally from California, Jacob turned down an acting scholarship and instead started a career in advertising, with moves to San Francisco, New York, Miami and Chicago. A local ad firm brought him to KC in 2014, and today he is the loyalty art director at KC-based AMC Theatres. n

Healthcare is booming in the area. Children’s Mercy has a major expansion in the works with the construction of a nine-story pediatric research tower. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is building a new facility to offer therapeutic treatments and early education for children with developmental challenges and special needs. Saint Luke’s Health System will open its state-of-the-art Rehabilitation Institute at the South Hospital campus in mid-2019. The University of Kansas Health System invested $100 million into a new hospital in Overland Park that boasts 34 private patient rooms, eight operating rooms, and comprehensive cancer care for women. SmartAsset’s 2018 study reveals that Kansas City is number two in the country for women in technology. The KC Tech Council’s strategic focus on workforce development, policy advocacy, and industry access aim to make KC the foremost tech hub of the Midwest. KC Global Design reports that the Kansas City region is one of the top five largest concentrations of architecture and engineering employment in the U.S. The group leads the charge to establish KC as a premier destination for talent and innovation in the engineering, architecture, and technology sectors. Engineering News-Record ranks KC metro-based Burns & McDonnell, Black & Veatch, HNTB, Terracon Consultants, TranSystems and Populous among the top 100 design firms in the country. KC SmartPort is an advocate for freight-based economic development. General Motors, Ford and French automaker Faurecia all have plants in the region. Well-known brands, such as Amazon, CVS Pharmacy, Staples, Jet.com and Kubota Tractor have invested millions of dollars into the local economy with major distribution centers. The Kauffman Foundation empowers local entrepreneurs through programs that target policy, market gaps, research, learning and communities. These programs include 1 Million Cups, a weekly gathering where entrepreneurs get feedback on startup ideas from mentors and advisors and Kauffman FastTrac, a free online entrepreneurship course that provides solid framework for business concepts. The Foundation also awards grants to level the playing field for entrepreneurs impacted by demographic, socioeconomic and geographic barriers. Libby Abbruzzese and her husband Nick wanted to raise their daughter, Zoe, in the Midwest and reestablish the values and ethics that had been instilled in them. So, when Libbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s employer offered her a job transfer from San Diego to Kansas City it seemed like the ideal move.

“We had never been to Kansas City, but we had heard great things about it,” she says. “We fell in love just by looking up information online. We could tell that it was an authentic, up-and-coming city, with an impressive technology and business landscape — not to mention — a great food and arts scene.” The Abbruzzeses came to Kansas City in July of 2017 and made Prairie Village their home. “Coming from San Diego, we were in awe of the sizes of homes we could afford here,” she says. “We like the mix of urban and suburban living. We like the school district. We can walk to dinner and to parks. It’s the perfect fit.” Since relocating, the family has joined the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City and Libby has gotten involved in volunteering with the Junior League of Kansas City. They have also discovered their favorite places for recreation, dining and entertainment, including Franklin Park, the Crossroads Arts District, Westport and the Country Club Plaza. Libby says her role as the director of business operations at Aerotek is challenging and rewarding every day. Nick is thriving in his position as a project engineer at Honeywell FMT. “We have everything we want here,” she says. “The community wraps its arms around you as soon as you get here and makes you feel welcome.” n

LOCAL RESIDENT CHOOSES KANSAS CITY ALL OVER AGAIN It’s easy to favor your hometown when that’s all you know, but Chelan David has a broader experience. After growing up in the region, David lived in New York, Los Angeles and Seattle. But in 2009, he decided to come back home to raise his two daughters and be close to family. “I think I have a pretty good perspective,” he said. “Every city has its unique benefits, but I think Kansas City has a lot to offer that I took for granted when I was growing up in this area.” Once back, he wasted no time getting involved. After graduating from the Centurions Leadership Program through the Greater KC Chamber of Commerce, he was inspired to pursue a career in nonprofits, now serving as the director of
development for the Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City. “I thought I knew a lot about Kansas City before I entered the program, but it really opened my eyes to all the organizations,” he said. “I wanted to be a part of that and give back every day.” Between his home in Overland Park and his office in the Quality Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, he and his family have many favorites, including the City Market and Union Station, the views from Case Park and the baked lasagna at Garozzo’s. “It’s a great vibe and the food’s really good, too. It seems like a place Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack might hang out at.” Most of all, he’s grateful he made the decision to come home. “The people are really open and embrace newcomers. That’s one of the things I love about Kansas City is just the welcoming attitude, the Midwestern hospitality.” n

When Lisa Sanesanong returns to her hometown in the San Francisco Bay area she can’t help but sing the praises of Kansas City. “I tell my friends about the high quality of life, including lighter traffic, and good neighborhoods and schools,” she says. “The lower cost of living allows my fiancé and I to have a second home at the Lake of the Ozarks for weekend getaways.” Lisa got a job with Google Fiber as a contractor when she moved to KC in 2008 and worked there for four years. Now, she’s started her own IT training and consulting business with a focus on developing and creating a talent pipeline in Kansas City. Lisa says Kansas City is an “absolutely amazing” place for entrepreneurs. Continued

In fact, the recent revitalization made Kansas City much more attractive to Schulte— especially as he received a dream offer to work for his hometown team, the Kansas City Royals. After nearly eight years, he now serves as senior manager of special events and promotions. “It was definitely a good experience going to New York, but it’s also really good to be back in Kansas City. When I started living in KC as a ‘young professional,’ the whole dynamic of the city changed, and I’ve really been able to enjoy a whole new vibe.”

As an out gay man, much of that vibe comes from a supportive and engaged LGBT community. He not only serves on the board for the Heartland Men’s Chorus (composed of gay men) but also volunteers on the UMKC Chancellor’s LGBT Council, and plays on a gay softball league and tennis team. “You can feel safe, you can feel comfortable, you can feel welcomed,” he said. “I’ve never had any issues being an out gay man here. I’ve been impressed.” He also spends much of his time volunteering in the arts, such as the Youth Symphony of Kansas City, and spending down time at the Country Club Plaza. Through it all, he said he just appreciates the feeling of inclusion he’s received from his hometown. “I think we’re doing really well,” he said. “I’m very proud of Kansas City. n KC OPTIONS 2018 | 2019

“I had no notion of Kansas City before I came here,” she says. “I didn’t even know it was a hub for barbecue. For Aaron Ellison, MD, breaking the news to his patients was tough. “I had been in my practice for 12 years, so telling patients I was leaving and relocating was very difficult.” While Ellison had certainly settled into his North Carolina home over the course of 18 years, raising a family and a thriving practice, he wanted a different life for his two boys. “The big thing was I had no family there,” he said. “We really did want them to grow up with that ‘village.’” Born and raised in Kansas City’s urban core with a large extended family, Ellison played football at Lincoln Prep and attended medical school at the University of Missouri.
After evaluating local health systems, he chose HCA, joining an established physician group at Research Medical Center. The practice – and the setting – felt like a perfect fit. “The draw was being in that urban core,” he said. “I like to say the city raised me, and now I’m coming back to take care of it.” Ellison’s wife, also a physician, joined Encompass Medical Group, a move that will allow the couple to really explore the various health providers in the region. The couple has now settled in the Northland, and Ellison said he’s been impressed with the growth and development of the area and the city overall. He’s excited to begin seeing patients, and he’s excited to explore more local attractions with his family. But he’s most excited about the positive impact the move had had on his two young sons. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen them as happy.” n

“Just get involved.” The advice is always the same – and quite sound – but jumping into the civic or social scene is always easier said than done. Of course, sometimes you just need a few good ideas to light a fire. Daniel Lacy is vice president of operations at McCownGordon Construction. He says he found a path to a clearer understanding of Kansas City through the Centurions Leadership Program led by the Greater KC Chamber of Commerce. “The program provides backstage access to all the major initiatives in KC and the individuals who are leading them,” he said. “I like to say you get a master’s degree in all aspects of Kansas City.” Making connections is a priority for many other groups as well. Young Latino Professionals includes more than 350 young leaders across a variety of industries and backgrounds. And genKC emphasizes networking, community involvement and professional development for young professionals through a variety of partnerships with local organizations. If philanthropy is more your style, try the Bacchus Foundation, KC’s oldest philanthropic organization for young professionals. The Red Shoe Society is also very active, hosting leadership initiatives and building awareness of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City. Of course, if you’re just looking to meet some new friends over a glass of wine, Underground Social KC specializes in “purpose-driven networking” to develop the next generation of female leaders. While just a few years old, the group grew by 850 percent in its first year. Getting involved in KC is actually much easier than it looks. n

Kansas City is rife with art, culture, shopping and sports, but if we’re being practical, numbers matter too. Short-term and annual memberships are available for the nonprofit’s BCycle bike sharing program which has 41 stations around town. BikeWalkKC’s latest push, Complete KC, aims to develop new sidewalks, trails, crosswalks and bike lanes that make transit safe, comfortable and convenient for people of all ages. In 2018, a new form of transportation joined bike lanes. Bird Rides, Inc., landed hundreds of motorized scooters on the streets of KC, available for rent using an Uber-like app. Continued

Public Transportation RideKC is the regional public transit system. It includes buses, paratransit for the elderly and people with disabilities, and vanpool. The MAX bus rapid transit line serves densely populated areas with more frequent and faster service. The free-to-ride KC Streetcar follows a 2.2-mile route from Union Station and Crown Center to River Market, and runs daily reaching each stop every 10-15 minutes. Kansas City’s low-income, urban students benefit from PREP-KC’s college and career preparation programs. KC Scholars, a program through the Kauffman Foundation, provides college scholarships and support systems to traditional and adult students with low to modest income. Through the Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC), STEM-minded high school students can earn a bachelor’s degree in two years after graduating, incur little to no student debt, and
gain paid internship experience. With Degree in 3, high school students get a jump-start on college and earn their bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas (KU) in three years. The iconic Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a crown jewel in the region, welcoming 500,000 visitors a year to view its collections of more than 35,000 works of art. The pregame parking lot bash known as tailgating is a timehonored tradition in sports, and Kansas City is one of the best places in the country to take part in this cultural experience. Kansas City Chiefs fans hold the Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no surprise that our football spectators have also set a national example for tailgating done right. Yahoo! and Food & Wine magazine rank Arrowhead Stadium as one of the top tailgating destinations in the U.S. Enthusiasts in trucks, campers, RVs and buses fill the parking lots hours before the game to socialize, eat (barbecue reigns supreme), play lawn games, and show off their team spirit.
