SENSORY EXPLORATION
Y R O S S E N ION
T A R O L EXP
Young children are naturally curious and have a physical and emotional desire to see, hear, touch, smell and taste things that are new to them. Think of a baby – if they can reach it and grab it, the chances are the next thing they will do is to put that item in their mouths. This is how they learn. By being exposed to different tastes, textures, sights, smells and sounds, children’s senses are stimulated and they have new experiences from which to draw upon and to help make sense of the world around them. Sensory play helps to build new connections in the brain’s pathways, which in turn helps children to complete more complex learning tasks – ultimately supporting cognitive growth, language development, motor skills, social interaction and problem-solving skills.
