What’s Different? Read It & Experience it Live Though a lifestyle publication isn’t unique, TWELVE evolves the genre. It’s the only magazine that you both read and live. We set out to create more than a literary piece. We’ve merged both the online world and the live event into the “magazine experience”. Once a month, we release a new issue of the magazine. The release is paired with a live launch event, where the feature elements and characters of our magazine are brought to life for you to touch, taste, feel and experience. The live experience becomes part of gathering ground of additional stories, photos, and more for the final written magazine.

I “One of the reasons we wanted to keep the movie here in the Kansas City area was to showcase the rich AfricanAmerican culture here.”

13

t’s easy to think that if you want to make it in film that the first thing you need to do is head to Hollywood or New York. The presumption is those are the only places that you can get noticed as an actor, produce a blockbuster hit, or make it as a director. The whole time a lot of people miss out on opportunities in their own backyard and it’s not just BBQ. For decades Kansas City was once the hub for major Hollywood films. Film Row, now known as the Crossroads, was home to many distribution offices in the 1920s to the 1960s. Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Allied Artists, MGM, Universal Pictures, United Artists, and (Continued on page 14)

Walt Disney are a few of the major names with direct connections to Kansas City. Kansas City's film industry is rich with culture. In fact, you can still find movies being produced here. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with the creators and directors of “Coach Carter’s Next Big Thing” co-directors, The Dumas Brothers, Clifton and Ralph, as well as the cast. I was elated after hearing the passion everyone had when discussing the movie, what it means to Kansas City and how you shouldn’t categorize this film by any means. The movie idea developed after Coach Ken Carter attended a 4HIS WILL event in KC. 4HIS WILL is the open mic event, designed for faith or Christian-based artistry. The talent that night was the creative genesis of The Next Big Thing and the movie retains its Christian essence. 14

“When people think of Christian films, they really don’t think of mainstream movies. They kind of write them off, so we want people to know that you can actually have a film that’s about raising His name that’s still entertaining”, says director, Ralph Dumas. “Just because it’s a positive Christian film doesn’t mean that it’s corny. It doesn’t mean that it’s low budget.” seconds codirector, Clifton Dumas. “The diversity of the characters and what our characters are about will distinguish us from other movies”, explains Jamie Lynn who plays Mia Coleman, one of the film’s stars. By early accounts, the movie is filled with an array of plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You’ll watch a vibrant cast tell the stories of three main characters auditioning for the chance of a life time to follow their music dreams and to win the talent contest produced by the legendary (Continued on page 15)

Coach Ken Carter. The movie is exudes positivity and also highlights the extensive musical talent of the cast, “There’re a lot of talented artists here in Kansas City. I’m surprised the artists out here aren’t signed. After this movie I believe these artists are going to blow up with not just acting but on a musical level”, Ralph predicts. You’ll find scenes filmed around historical areas in the city, showcasing the vast history

plain the movie to people it’s really, at the core, about three main characters, the lives that they were brought up to live, and the lives they choose to live.” explains Nikol Booker who plays Kita.

The movie was written By Clifton Dumas, Ralph Dumas, Pierre Johnson, Monique Lucas and Komica Purnell. "There are three different story lines. Each teaches you something and I think at the end of the day, that's what

The movie was produced by Coach Ken Carter, whose life was depicted by Samuel L. Jackson in the 2005 movie, “Coach Carter”. His beliefs are based on being positive, exemplary, and inspiring others while pursuing your dreams. The “Next Big Thing” message espouses these same beliefs. “When I ex-

it's all about…learning. It’s for entertainment but you learn a lesson and you’re able to apply that lesson to your personal life," says Jacoya Rivers who plays Stacy. Professional production, quality actors, and making it happen in the heart of Kansas City, you’ve got to love it! ith the mindset of ministering through worship, The MAC Family is on a mission to inspire others one song at a time. Born and raised in Kansas City, MO, the trio which includes Magen, Mamie, and Chet McIntyre are no strangers when it comes to music. "We couldn't go outside and play," said Magen as she jokingly talked about her parents being heavily involved in music as well. "We had to practice." With practice came the start of writing their own music, which turned out to be the beginning of a Christian Contemporary music career, spawning the ministry known as The MAC Family. "We want to relate to the young people," said Chester. "Through action you can show somebody how to be like Jesus." “I minister through music, particularly rap. I allow God to help me become transparent enough to be relatable to my generation while giving Christ/inspirational/positive music. We have real testimonies. Ones that most are ashamed to tell and speak on, but we've allowed God to make us confident in His grace and favor to share our life experiences through music. I feel like this world needs a lot more young people to stand up and out from the usual. Youth that are born leaders open and willing to be used by God to be living examples of His word. Ministry through music is my calling, my assignment. Not doing it is being outside of God’s will and I know exactly what that life is like. Not interested.” What the world needs now is… “Jesus and followers to show that He is real.” What are your future plans? “I don't make plans, literally. MUSIC

Photo: Raye Jackson

Born Steven Brundidge, Prince Flash grew up in historic Tuskegee and Montgomery, AL. He’s been blessed with the rare ability to truly inhabit a song, delivering the lyrics with an intensity that brings the message to life, and he does just that throughout each track. Flash knew from an early age he wanted to use his voice in ministry, but caught in the allure of the bright lights, fame, and fortune. Like many other artists, he went astray. Now taking a "prodigal son" approach he has truly sacrificed it all for Christ, and is using his talents to glorify God with each lyric. "Even if one person hears my music and decides to give their life to Christ I would feel like “Mission accomplished!" "It’s all about being a disciple for Jesus, and spreading the message about Him," says Flash. Flash grew up with the foundation being laid by his parents. In addition to a love for God, Flash's dad also instilled a sense of determination in him, he says. Flash's first Christian rap installment, Amnesia, has been released and is now on iTunes. He hopes that it can be influential to people of all ages to give their lives to Christ and sacrifice it all. It clearly shows that his heart is vested in helping the youth reach their full potential in Christ, and live to the higher purpose which He has called all of us to do. He aspires to show youth that it’s cool to follow Christ, and that they don't have to be afraid. "Each day is a walk with Jesus, I just want to do what God has put me on this earth to do." KEITH DIXON

By Iman Lott

HISTORY AND MUSIC NEW MUSIC INSPIRED BY KCK ROOTS

K

eith “KD” Dixon is a product of his environment. His upcoming project “Quindaro” comprised of music and a documentary based on the once city, screams cries of pride for where he was born and raised. “I’m from Quindaro - a place that has a stigma where it’s viewed as a rough part of town but a lot of people don’t understand the history.” (Continued on page 47)

46

KD’s love for the city and its history coupled with his love for music led him to this popular avenue of storytelling. The title track, “Quindaro”, showcases multiple artists that are actually from the area.

QUINDARO Located on the south bank of the Missouri River in what is now Kansas City (where Interstate 635 crosses the river), Quindaro was developed after the Kansas-Nebraska Act to create a free state port of entry into Kansas Territory. The land was part of an area the Wyandot Indians had purchased from the Delaware. When the Wyandot tribe disbanded, the land was divided among tribal members who wished to remain in the area and become U.S. citizens. Among these people were Abelard Guthrie and his wife, Nancy Quindaro Brown Guthrie, for whom the town was named. Guthrie was the Vice President of the Quindaro Township Company and was its principal promoter. The town’s founders and first residents included other Wyandots and abolitionists.

47

Because it was close to the Missouri River, Quindaro was in an ideal location for helping slaves move to freedom. This was more by design than by chance. “Pretty much where the Argosy casino is currently located, that’s where the Underground Railroad was” says KD. “Slaves escaped from what is now North Kansas City, Missouri and traveled the Underground Railroad to the site in Kansas.” Knowing these facts KD recognized the story that needed to be told. The name Quindaro means “bundle of sticks” or “in union there is strength”. “What made me passionate about it was when I found out what it stood for. This made me research it more. I grew up on Quindaro and it definitely impacted me and my upbringing. High speed chases, (Continued on page 51)

The town ran into financial problems and ended up being annexed by Kansas City, Kansas however, in commemoration they named a street after the former town. “I would never move back but I will never forget it. Growing up in an area where there is nothing but setbacks, going to college saved my life and made me that much more proud to come from and go through what I went through and say I made it out”. KD’s love for the city and its history coupled with his love for music led him to this popular avenue of storytelling. The title track, “Quindaro”, showcases multiple artists that are actually from the area. “It sort of started that way and I decided to keep it that way. I notice music is changing but I noticed there is still some good music out there and that motivated me to do my own album, where I would release a lot of talented artists that need and deserve the exposure”. KD sites influences ranging from Dr. Dre, Outkast and A tribe called Quest to newer artists such as Kendrick Lamar. “This project, this is bigger than me. This is about us as a culture and the way we portray and carry ourselves. I would say the theme is: we can’t be broken. We may think it and carry ourselves that way but we’ve been through so much as a people that we can’t be broken. We’re unbreakable. “You will see it mostly in the KC area and if it bleeds over, it bleeds over. This is my ‘do this so I can walk away and say I tried’. I want to be able to say that I did share something of myself with the world and that I don’t regret any of it.” 51
