Though a lifestyle publication isn’t unique, TWELVE evolves the genre. It’s the only magazine that you both read and live. We set out to create more than a literary piece. We’ve merged both the online world and the live event into the “magazine experience”. Once a month, we release a new issue of the magazine. The release is paired with a live launch event, where the feature elements and characters of our magazine are brought to life for you to touch, taste, feel and experience. The live experience becomes part of gathering ground of additional stories, photos, and more for the final written magazine.

BEHIND EVERY GREAT PLAYER…

Takes More than Players & Coaches for a Winning Team

B

y the time they reach adolescence, most men have cultivated a serious passion for sports.

They grow up having a favorite team, a favorite player and a natural love of the game. It’s almost as if their very DNA spawns aspirations of becoming a professional athlete.

“Like most people I envisioned myself playing in the league but I was never the biggest nor the fastest individual however, I definitely held my own.” After tearing his ACL in high school Rahman Anjorin decided that if he couldn’t play football in the NFL he could still be a part of it. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he attended Georgia Southern University obtained his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, and immediately went to work for the Professional (Continued on page 8)

Golfer’s Association of America (PGA). “I did some of everything for them which made me realize I needed to do a little more schooling so I went back to get my Master’s degree with the DeVos Sports Business Management program at the University of Central Florida.” The DeVos program offers students the opportunity to earn a Master in Sports Business Management (MSBM) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). This curriculum provides a unique, teambased, business approach within a global sports network in a hands-on environment. “While there you are assigned a mentor in the field you desire to work in. Mine was Robert Morrissey who works with the NFL player engagement office in New York. I knew very early in graduate school the route that I wanted to take. I did whatever I could to surround myself with people that I thought I could grow and learn from.”

“It worked out phenomenally for me and helped me with transitioning into the professional sports arena. Also, don’t be too prideful to accept internships. A lot of them are unpaid so the earlier you start the better.”

Rahman Anjorin KC Chiefs Corporate Office

As the current Player Engagement assistant with the Kansas City Chiefs Anjorin is a part of a two man system helping men transition into and out of the League. “Anything dealing with rookies or free agents coming to Kansas City, we assist in that process. We teach them 8

Anjorin advises if anyone is looking to get into a career in sports, visit the website www.teamworkonline.com. “Thousands of jobs go up every day in the world of sports that you can apply for on that website. I also recommend www.linkedin.com as it was vital in helping me obtain my position with the Chief’s organization. Keep your resumes and profiles up to date on there as well.” He also recommends obtaining a graduate degree. “I had to get my second degree and will probably get my doctorate at some point in time. If you want to be in this [sports business] world, having several degrees is only going to help.” Lastly, Anjorin suggests looking into positions at the collegiate level as well.

Anjorin began his post graduate career at New Mexico State University as their life skills coordinator for the student athletes. Still keeping in touch with his mentor Mr. Morrissey, he was presented with an opportunity that would eventually lead to an introduction to BJ Stabler, the current Kansas City Chiefs Player Engagement Manager. “Mr. Morrissey initiated the relationship between me and my current boss and I began last summer with the Chief’s organization. The first day of training camp last year was my first day.”

how to transition from student athletes to professional athletes and how to conduct themselves as professionals. For our veterans we do things to enhance their resumes like job shadowing opportunities or internships during the off season. We even have guys who are in grad school at the moment so that when they are done playing the shift out of the league and into our world it comes off as seamlessly as possible. When they are brought to KC we aspire to assist in the enhancement of them becoming a citizen of Kansas City and an upstanding man.”

When asked about making Kansas City his permanent place of residence, a smile of inner contentment radiates. “I feel very blessed and very fortunate to be at the age that I am and be able to do what I do on and day-to-day basis while surrounded by the incredible people that I’m around. I have no complaints at all. This is something that I plan to do for decades to come. I love everything about this organization and I plan on being here as long as possible.”

MUSIC

Just Listen

Dominic Manning better known by his stage name of ChosenVoice is straight out of the heart of Kansas City,

MO. He was born in Kansas City to Randal and Angela Manning on May 27, 1987. Chosen was raised in the church seeing his father is an Elder and his mother a missionary. This is where Chosen at the age of 5 discovered his gift from God of singing. This is nothing new considering in the Manning family, you either sing or play an instrument. Describe Your Music? My music is straight from the soul. I sing and write songs because it is my gift from God and my passion. I like to call it music with substance. That is something I think our generation overlooks and needs to get back to.

What makes you unique? What makes me unique is that I sing from the heart. I come from a family that is very musically inclined. My aunt Marva Whitney sang with James Brown for years. Also my family had a known gospel group by the name of the Ray Manning Singers. So music flows through my blood and pours out of me.

What’s your impression of the KC music scene? The music scene in Kansas City is big right now. It has grown over the years back to what it used to be in the 50's 60's and 70's. I’m just sad I know live in Dallas, TX and will be missing out on the excitement. Kansas City is a big market full of a lot of hidden talent and the world will be ready to receive it soon. Outside of music, any special skills or talents? Military soldier outside of music and I also draw a lot.

What’s your ultimate goal with music? My ultimate goal with music is to go down as one of the best male vocalist to ever be heard by my generation and any other generation. Also to continue a musical legacy seen by the world which started with my Aunt Marva Whitney and family. I know this will take a lot of hard work and long hours to my craft but I believe it can be done.

Collaborations? Who have you worked with on your current music? I got a couple of great collaborations coming up later this year. On my current EP, called Love is Music Music is Love, I worked with the great Kerwin Young. Kerwin has hits with Public Enemy and more . Also I had my brother Kevin "Churchboi" Johnson on my Interludes where we included some live recordings. We recorded at Weights and Measures Soundlab which is the best studio in KC hands down. Also Mix and Mastering, I worked with my boy Duane Trower. Duane has worked with MMG and even the home town artists, killing the game now, like Tech N9ne. Shoutout the Big Homie Tech for putting on for the city no matter the obstacles at hand.

How can people hear or purchase more of your music? My music is on iTunes AmazonMp3 and GooglePlay all you have to do is search my name ChosenVoiceKC and Enjoy.

What’s next for you? I am taking on a new chapter in my life recently getting married and moving to Dallas. I am going to attack the music seen down here in Dallas full steam ahead and hit the music industry from the hidden shadows. Being from the Show Me State, now it’s time for me to show the world my gift from God.

HANDS UP. DON’T SHOOT! Know Your Rights. Three words, simple enough, but in today’s world, they could be the saving grace from imprisonment to death. The shooting death of Michael Brown on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, MO, sparked discussions, rallies, and protests across the country. Amidst confusion of actual accounts, and questions of his true character, few dispute the fact that Brown was an unarmed teenager who lost his life at the hands of a police officer. This incident was unfortunately only one of several recent accounts tainted with racism and abuse of power. Saturday, September 20th at United Believers

14

Church, a “Know Your Rights” symposium was hosted by the American Coalition for Good Government along with Kansas City's Beta Lambda Chapter and Omicron Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This forum focused on shedding light and imparting wisdom. Separating emotion from facts, the forum featured three experts: State Representative Randy Dunn, Judge Ardie Bland, and Major Karl Oakman of the Kansas City Police Department, along with moderator, former KCMO Councilwoman and State Representative Sharon Sanders Brooks. The following are key learnings from the event::

Stopped by An Officer. Do your part to avoid on-site escalation. Provide basic information upon request. If you feel you’ve been unlawfully stopped or are being treated unfairly, you have the right to request a supervisor on-site. Remain civil throughout your encounter. Be mindful that the side of the road is not the place to hold court. Instead, follow up after the incident to properly protest unfair treatment in court or through the Office of Community Complaints, which is a non-police, civilian oversight committee that will help oversee complaints and initiates investigations with Internal Affairs. Video. Video has become the ultimate witness. Where personal accounts and eye witnesses falter, video doesn’t lie. In Kansas City, MO, police stops are recorded to protect both citizens and officers. Keep it In Perspective. There’s no excuse for abuse of power and all at fault should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. In Kansas City, there are approximately 1,500 officers who make about 500,000 contacts a year. Among these, few are challenged or result in officer complaints. Fortunately, the overwhelming number of police contacts are without an incident of abuse. Know Your Rights. In the end, we share in the personal accountability of ensuring our protection by knowing our rights. City ordinances, state statutes, and police procedures are all readily available. Two key resources are the KCPD Policies & Procedures (http://kcmo.gov/police/policies-and-procedures/) and the Office of Community Complaints, 635 Woodland Ave., Suite 2102 Kansas City, MO 64106, 816889-6640, communitycomplaints@kcpd.org.

The Perfect Style Boutique offers several strata of services all within the boutique that would normally take a huge effort of coordination to pull off. Following are a the core services:

NAVIGATION KEYS FOR YOUR DIGITAL CAMPAIGN ou know enough about marketing to realize that a website is a necessity today. Take your pick of solutions and tools ranging from free starter sites to full-blown professionally built online applications. In the end, those are tools. What do you do with them? Knowing the correct application of those tools is the key for business development. Digital marketing expert, Derrick Idleburg, took a few minutes to share some strategic advice. He has tips for both the novice as well as more learned business developers. Content is still KING. When it comes to attracting visitors, whether via websites or social media portals, delivering fresh, unique content is the single most important task for digital

1

CONTENT RULES  

 

Develop a schedule for your content, outlining what to post and when. Repurpose content. Address a topic you’ve addressed before in a new way. Freshen it with new facts and resources. Develop case studies that deliver facts. Ensure that the content is useful to your target audience. Keep it relevant to the theme you’ve announced and promoted.

fographics to attract visitors to your website. Blog about what you know. Here’s your chance to show your expertise and garner followers. Design for impact. You’ve got only a short time, maybe 10-30 seconds to grab the interest of a reader. Be sure the new and relevant details are readily seen and content is easily accessible. Tenacity wins the race. Attracting attention and visitors requires constant work. Don’t fall for quick schemes of false likes and followers to inflate your pages with people who don’t really care about your service. Content should be shareable. Once you have content, encourage fans to share. Choose social media accounts wisely. There’s a plethora of options, however most businesses should have no more than three social media accounts to ensure that you can properly manage them. Choose two that are popular with your target and LinkedIn as the third one. Your content is your advertising. Most small businesses can rely on their content vs paid media. Advertising is best used by corporations or those with large advertising budgets to maintain a campaign. Going viral. There’s no true formula. It’s the right person at the right time, with the right content or offer. Manage your brand. It’s easy to hit the share button and share a link, but it can damage your reputation and risk your credibility if you’re promoting gossip. Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Want to be found by your customers? For a good start, use Google’s keyword search options to find top keywords searched for in your category. Incorporate 5-10 words on every webpage you have. However, be sure that it makes sense and avoid “stuffing” words that don’t make sense or are not in alignment with the content on that page. Apply these tips today and build your business. Stay tuned for future issue of TWELVE as we continue our MAXIMIZE business sessions.
