MICHAEL STERN, music director
I ALWAYS RELISH THE CHALLENGE OF PUTTING A NEW
season together, finding new and illuminating ways to experience every program, so I’m thrilled to invite you to our 2018/19 season. Our successful musical adventure together continues to accelerate, as we make the case for music in this great American city by featuring multifaceted American composers such as John Adams, Samuel Barber, John Corigliano, Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Augusta Read Thomas and Aaron Jay Kernis. A wonderfully eclectic work for percussion and orchestra based on Pat Metheny’s music receives its Kansas City premiere, as do three splendid works by Anna Clyne, Sarah Kirkland Snider and Michael Kurth. We continue our Mahler cycle with his transcendent Third Symphony, which has not been performed in Kansas City for more than three decades. We welcome esteemed guest conductors, with first visits from Andrey Boreyko and Edo de Waart, plus exceptional soloists including our own Noah Geller, Mark Gibbs and Julian Kaplan. Of course, we also have great music by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Haydn and Schubert as well as Orff ’s everpopular Carmina burana. There’s something for everyone in this season, and I can’t wait to share all of it with you!

STRAVINSKY Chant funèbre GLAZUNOV Violin Concerto TCHAIKOVSKY Suite No. 3 We’re bringing St. Petersburg to Kansas City with three Russian greats — Stravinsky, Glazunov and Tchaikovsky, led by Andrey Boreyko who makes his Kansas City Symphony conducting debut. Presumed lost for more than a century, the recent rediscovery of Chant funèbre allows audiences to hear a young Stravinsky’s rise to prominence before he wrote his famed Firebird. Glazunov’s passionate Violin Concerto blends colorful, freewheeling melodies with impressive technical feats. Tchaikovsky’s triumphant Third Suite features a powerful theme-and-variations finale.

Gershwin’s rowdy Cuban Overture, a souvenir from his wild trip with friends to Havana, begins this concert celebrating the melting pot of American music. The songs of Kansas City jazz icon Pat Metheny are showcased in Imaginary Day, a brilliant concerto for vibes and marimba, which will feature Kansas City Symphony Principal Percussionist Christopher McLaurin and Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Percussionist Christopher Deviney. While living in the U.S. in the 1890s, Dvořák’s study of American folk melodies resulted in an affectionate tribute to this remarkable “New World.”
