WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to KCYA, where we believe every child deserves the transformational spark the arts ignite.

Through our in-school programs, we place professional teaching artists in the classroom to inspire students to discover new perspectives and new forms of expression. Our teaching artists integrate the arts into your classroom to support curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and more. Dynamic programs covering numerous academic topics in many artistic disciplines can be found in our catalog. This belief is at the heart of all we do. Since 1961, KCYA has been providing Kansas City’s children with high-quality arts experiences, often the first arts encounters they’ve ever had. PROGRAMMING AT OUR LOCATION

School & Community Programs (SCP), KCYA’s original programming, places the finest professional artists in the classroom to deliver arts programming integrated with core curriculum. Educators, PTAs, librarians, and community service providers can select from a wide variety of quality programs that are specifically designed to deliver school curriculum in highly engaging ways.

Established in 1985, Arts Partners (AP) is a unique consortium of premier arts organizations collaborating to provide high–quality arts programming to school districts across the Kansas City metropolitan area. Arts Partners is an innovative arts–in–education program, successfully integrating the arts into the curriculum of participating school districts.

With performances, workshops, and residencies in many artistic disciplines, covering numerous academic topics, educators look to KCYA to enhance and reinforce their students’ classroom learning.

Arts Partners programs are implemented across the participating district ensuring every student has an opportunity to receive the benefits of arts enriched learning experiences. Students are engaged in arts programs tied directly to their math, science, literature, reading, and social studies curriculum provided by the Arts Partners organizations.

Opened in 2004, the Community School of the Arts (CSA) provides students within our community a comprehensive arts experience that inspires them to discover and develop their unique talents. At KCYA, we believe we have the opportunity to do something extraordinary – to help students discover new ways of seeing things & expressing themselves.

Kansas City Young Audiences (KCYA) has been the leading provider of high–quality arts education since 1961. Established as a non–profit agency by a group of dedicated volunteers, KCYA’s original mission was to provide children in Kansas City schools an opportunity to see and hear classical music performances. Since that time, Kansas City Young Audiences has expanded and now provides programs in creative writing, dance, theatre, visual arts and music, serving the greater Kansas City area, Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri. KCYA is an affiliate of the national Young Audiences Arts for Learning network, the leading provider of arts education programs in the United States. Kansas City Young Audiences arts programs have helped more than 5 million children discover new ways of seeing things and expressing themselves.

WHAT WE DO Kansas City Young Audiences works with a roster of more than 150 artists to provide dynamic and educational arts programs to children throughout the greater Kansas City area in schools, libraries, community centers, and at our facility. We offer performances, residencies, workshops, professional development, and after–school programs in most artistic disciplines.

WORKSHOPS

KCYA performances are designed to be most effective for a maximum of 250 students, and are approximately 45–60 minutes in length.

KCYA workshops are designed to be most effective for a maximum of 25–30 students and are approximately 45–60 minutes in length.

For audiences that exceed 250, double (back-to-back) performances are available.

Workshops typically take place in the classroom.

Performances typically take place in an auditorium, gym or large multipurpose room. RESIDENCIES Many workshops are offered in residency format, which allows for more in–depth arts and learning experiences with the Teaching Artist. Residencies that are three days or longer require a 45-minute paid planning meeting with the artist and a Kansas City Young Audiences staff member prior to the residency. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Because the arts are an extremely effective educational tool, we offer professional development workshops for educators, facilitators, and administrators working in schools, pre-schools, libraries, after-school care, camps, and hospitals. Our trained programming staff and teaching artists have worked with thousands of children, accumulating a wealth of information to instruct educators on how to incorporate the arts into their daily curriculum.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL KCYA PROGRAMS Teachers are required to be present during the entire performance, workshop, or residency. Teacher program guides with descriptions of the program will be sent with your program confirmation and invoice. Specific requirements are available in the detailed program descriptions online at KCYA.org. Multiple programs from the same artist may be scheduled on the same day at a discounted price. The break between workshops or performances must not exceed 90 minutes to receive the reduced rate.

KCYA will notify you immediately if an artist is unable to perform due to inclement weather or illness. We will make every effort to reschedule the program or offer a different program. TITLE I SCHOOLS in both Kansas and Missouri are eligible to receive programs at a discounted price. These funds are limited and provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once your program has been confirmed you will receive an email with all the details of your booking. A confirmation invoice, Teacher Program Guide, and program evaluation will be mailed to you three to four weeks prior to your program.

Through the generosity of the Missouri Arts Council and other donors, KCYA provides subsidies to qualified schools. These limited funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

A variety of grants are offered by the Missouri Arts Council. The School Touring grant and the Artist in Residence grant for after–school programming are both available for schools and community agencies. The Big Yellow Bus grant will pay for transportation to arts–related activities.

Performance and lecture give insight into the culture and traditions of India. Samarpita Bajpai explains the structure and history of Indian classical dance forms, performs dances from two major styles, and answers questions. Each dance is preceded by a short narration to illuminate the meaning and cultural context of the dance.

A vibrant trio of professional dance artists will perform original dance pieces based on the theme of simple machines. Students will mirror and model the simple machine movements inspired by wheels, gears, pulleys, levers, wedges, and inclined planes. This program is especially effective when paired with the dance workshop Simple Machines: Bodies at Work with Jane Gotch.

Pre-schoolers will delight in the opportunity to watch professional dancers perform and then dance themselves with activities such as “The Elevator Game”, “The Museum is Open” and “Slowland/Fastland.” Students will explore shape, space, level, and time. This program is a great way for students to discover dance in a structured and safe environment.

Students will experience one of the biggest tragedies in New York City’s history through dance, video, and text. Kaciko Dance performs a piece about the Triangle Factory Fire of 1911, which killed 146 young immigrant garment workers and began a revolution for workers’ rights and safety in America. Please note: this piece contains potentially disturbing imagery.

Rodney and Vanessa Gibbs will teach students concepts and techniques of West African dance from Mali and Senegal. Students will learn dances that honor kings and queens, celebrate weddings, and begin harvests.

Healthy Living

Have a ball with ballroom dance! Through Merenge, Swing, Salsa, Rumba, Bachata, and the Tango, students learn self-esteem, grow in confidence, and learn teamwork in an atmosphere that celebrates physical education through partner dance. This workshop promotes respect, courtesy and etiquette, important life skills, and is fun to boot. This interactive dance class would make an excellent residency program within a PE class. A writing component may be added to this program and can be aligned to State Standards.

Students learn the building blocks of a healthy lifestyle through song, dance, or visual arts in this fun and engaging workshop. Healthy eating, activity, and limited screen time are emphasized through exercises that spark kids’ imaginations.

Anansi is in trouble! Each of his six sons has a special gift they use to help Anansi get out of trouble. Students will use the instrument of their body and design six shapes that represent the six sons. Using the ideas of motif and variation, students will explore different ways to move the shapes. This workshop links art skills with learning skills, and arts with academics. It is structured around an axis of dances, of cultures taken from Africa and the Diaspora. Each student will be given individual attention in an effort to develop intelligences centered around linguistic, musical, bodily kinesthetic, logical mathematic, spatial awareness, and interpersonal skills. This workshop promotes an awareness, understanding, and appreciation for dance as a means of cultural, artistic, and educational development.

This high-energy dance class is enjoyed by both boys and girls who want to learn the latest urban dance steps. Influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreography, these dances are presented in an age-appropriate manner while combining elements from traditional African, jazz, and street dance styles. The class will include proper conditioning and warm-up, individualized dance steps and full-bodied combinations. Dancers will love learning these expressive dance steps while getting the physical education they need to stay active.

Join a magical, instructive journey through the dance, music, and culture of India. Learn some of the hand gestures and meanings associated with Indian dance. The Nature Dance presents connections between the elements (earth, wind, moon), our bodies, minds, and peace. A brief history is given with examples of Indian artwork, clothing and crafts.

This high energy workshop uses creative movement to introduce the elements a healthy mind and body need: exercise, good nutrition, and less screen time. Students will learn how food fuels your body with movement activities. Master Teaching Artist and Lighton Prize winner Kim Shope’s fun and imaginative workshops provides students with the tools they need to make healthier choices.

Rain Forest Jane Gotch Grades: 1 – 5

This workshop uses movement to illustrate rain forest concepts. Jane Gotch will teach students about various flora and fauna of the rain forest and the circular and interconnected relationships that exist between them. The participants will explore the illustrations and characters in the book Here is the Tropical Rain Forest by Madeleine Dunphy. They will then create their own shapes based on the characters that co-exist in the rain forest.

Simple Machines: Bodies at Work Jane Gotch Grades: 1 – 6

Using Shel Silverstein’s book The Giving Tree, students interpret the words and images of the story into movement phrases. They explore the similarities between how authors and choreographers create their work. They learn that while authors use words and choreographers use movement, both create images that communicate a message.

This workshop helps students experience and understand the forces at work in simple machines. Through creative movement, Jane Gotch works with students to reinforce principles of simple machines. Ideas of wheels, gears, pulleys, levers, inclined planes, wedges, and screws are explored and structured into a movement class.

Playful drawing and writing exercises will develop skill, confidence, and joy in the young author and artist. Led by book designer and editor, Susan Schurman, sessions will focus on concepts of texture, color, pattern, shadow and shape in words and pictures, and practical book-building skills. Each participant will create, edit, revise, and assemble a book of original writing and art.

From natural treasures to store-bought stuff, from museums to knick-knack shelves, humans find artifacts fascinating. Many students are enthusiastic collectors of sports cards, movie toys, bugs, rocks, leaves, and other things. Tapping into these interests helps promote more engaged and focused writing. This workshop encourages students to become object detectives and artifact scribes. Note: This workshop is 60 minutes.

Become a hip hop poet with Stacy “Reach” Smith, winner of the National Next Up contest sponsored by Toyota Scion. Reach will introduce students to the pioneers of rap & hip hop and explore the social conditions in which the art form has evolved. As students complete the writing and performance exercises, they will develop a fundamental knowledge of theatre arts, public speaking, and creative writing, combined into a fun and interactive display of hip hop-filled defpoetry.

Creative writing is an excellent way for students to learn about themselves and the world around them. Young writers will learn important story writing techniques and get to express their creative side. They will explore the important components of storytelling or playwriting and have the opportunity to share their work with the group.

Dramatic Art & Rhythm demonstrates spoken word performance poetry at its finest. Learn the various writing and performing techniques and life skills that have helped “The Recipe” mold their combined 30+ years of poetic experience. This workshop is also available for a residency. “We believe that by exemplifying excellence and teamwork as spoken word we can influence, change and encourage people by example to work together towards common goals.”

How tall do sunflowers grow on the Great Plains? Young students will explore several kinds of tall tales so prevalent during pioneer times. They will each create an accordionstyle book to use to tell a tall tale. This tale reiterates the concept of size comparisons (tall, taller, and tallest) in a fun and sunny way. Oral Tradition, with Master Teacher and storyteller Susansylvia Scott, will inspire children to explore their culture, family history, and background. The workshop increases pride in the ownership of their family and community. The gathering and telling of a story from an elder will enhance creative language, organizational skills, and focusing abilitilies. Susansylvia has two other workshops that emphasize story writing: Storytelling: The Reading & Writing Connection and What’s Your Story: All Writing’s Creative.

Using a collection of video clips from plays and movies, and scenes from which students will read, Frank teaches the basics of dramatic structure. This performance is intended to introduce students to ragtime, a syncopated musical genre that directly preceded jazz and developed in Missouri at the turn of the twentieth century. In addition to being a joyful and infectious music to listen to, ragtime is inextricably tied to the civil rights struggles in America, as it provided black Americans with an early opportunity for their voices to be heard by a national audience. The program is equally divided between ragtime performances and concise lectures about various aesthetic and socio-political aspects of the music.

In this interactive character education program, Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove helps students identify personal rhythm through music, and he leads a discussion about respecting personal rhythm, the rhythm of others, and rhythm of the earth. Audience volunteers help demonstrate rhythm concepts and participate by playing along in one of two impromptu “jam” sessions. Students identify three specific ways they can exemplify respect in their communities.

Several student volunteers will be dressed in period clothing as a U.S. soldier and Jewish students. A Holocaust timeline will be included and most importantly, how today’s students can fight against racism with their own sense of right and wrong.

Jamie uses slides, woven examples, and other visual aids to discuss how communication is used through symbols. Indigo is called the king of colors with a rich history in the middle east, Asia, West Africa and South America most notable. This workshop centers on political cartoons that use famous art as a means to encourage viewers to think anew. While contemporary cartoons will be used to illustrate how parody and caricature come into play, Cynthia will also include a brief history of political cartooning. As visual allusions to artwork by Grant Wood, Leonardo da Vinci, Auguste Rodin, and others will reveal, this medium of illustrated humor has always relied on “shared culture” to lampoon prominent figures and comment on current events.

Let’s Create! This process-based workshop gives students an opportunity to experiment creatively with anything from painting using matchbox cars and gold tempera paint to building sculptures out of wood and recycled materials. The use of acrylic water-based paints was discovered by artists in the 1950’s and are becoming the medium of choice for many professionals. Acrylics can be used in transparent washes to resemble watercolor or opaquely to resemble oils. It is a fast drying paint which is both a blessing and a curse. The students will be able to practice working with the medium on a variety of surfaces, including watercolor paper or gessoed boards.

As an introduction to the art of murals, students will engage with one another to research new ideas while sharing their own stories and listening to the stories of others. This multiworkshop residency, led by professional mural artists who have worked throughout the US, explores murals as a means for civic engagement, visual narratives, and beautification. In addition to being introduced to works by other artists, students will have the opportunity to collaborate on a mural of their own.

Missouri native Thomas Hart Benton had, arguably, the most recognizable style of all 20th-century American painters. Ignoring the Modernist movement, he developed a style that would come to be known as Regionalism. Local teaching artist Jean Cook guides students through a hands-on study of the Benton style. Students will learn, through application, Benton’s philosophy toward his subjects and how it is essential to understanding his work. Through composition, drawing, and painting, students will attain the look and style of Thomas Hart Benton and the Regionalist artists of his time. Residency can be completed in 5 days.

Oils are a time-honored medium that has lasted for centuries. Students will learn the fundamentals of oil painting and the safe handling of the solvent and paints. The students will be introduced to the Pop Art Movement. The use of industrial processes and materials will be discussed as well as Andy Warhol’s use of high intensity color, pattern, and other elements of art. Students will create an edition of a multi-colored screen print using embroidery hoops and sheer fabric. Printing vocabulary such as registration, edition and traditional documentation will be stressed. Choose 1 of 2 methods for your residency, using contact paper or glue to make your screen. Residency can be completed in 3 to 5 days.

Students create their own collograph plate to be inked and printed in this workshop. Using found textures and objects in conjunction with created textures, students will ink and print their collograph plates with an end result of a unique print or editions of prints. This workshop introduces students to an essential form of relief printing. Bill Hargraves’ class includes a presentation of his work, discussion about jewelry design, and a demonstration of techniques used. Each student will be guided through the process of making their own ring or pendant. Day 1: 45-minute presentation. Day 2: An explanation and demonstration of design, tools, safety, stone selection and preparation, and soldering and finishing techniques. Students are encouraged to draw several designs for the next class. Days 3: Students complete jewelry projects. Residency can be completed in 3 to 5 days.

KCYA and the KC STEM Alliance are pleased to offer grant funds to support a limited number of STEAM Residency programs for elementary school classrooms implementing Launch or other STEM curriculum this year. This workshop teaches the educator how to energize subject matter, enhance student retention, and increase class involvement by guiding students to research, write, and present their findings. Puppetry is a powerful tool for learning because it teaches children through play. Puppetry incorporates visual art, theatre, and music. The use of these arts disciplines forms a foundation around which teachers are able to integrate the curriculum and support a child’s success. Puppetry can be used to develop creative writing and body coordination. Through writing and movement exercises, all students are encouraged to express and formulate their own ideas and emotions. This seminar provides practical, hands–on experience for elementary teachers.

This seminar is designed to use creative movement and dance as tools for curriculum integration and introduce teachers to use movement to expand their instructional effectiveness. The workshop is a practical, hands–on introduction to the fundamentals of creative movement and the use of movement to teach the core curriculum. The seminar includes a look at the relationship between movement and learning, the basics of creative movement, and creating lesson plans that incorporate movement as a teaching tool. Seminar participants will be able to demonstrate, lead, and facilitate movement activities for the purpose of teaching a lesson about specific curriculum concepts and ideas.

Reading and Rhythm: Enhancing Reading Skills Through Drumming (Music) Bird Fleming Master Teaching Artist, Lighton Prize $450 for 3-hour seminar

Using the West African drumming technique and style as a method and format, teachers will learn how the flow and pulse of beats within the rhythm patterns help students increase their reading fluidity and speed. This hand drumming involves a concentrated effort of maintaining eye/hand coordination when playing the drums, which enables students to develop a consistent connection between their eyes and their reading assignments. Teachers will see how, through the complex but attainable nature of assembling tones, patterns, and rhythmic phrases, students will learn composition and improve memory retention as well as reading comprehension.

This professional development seminar teaches the value and importance of play by emphasizing and incorporating aspects of play throughout the workshop. This seminar offers strategies for infusing storytelling and creative dramatics into lesson plans and classroom activities. The exercises involve the senses and offer techniques to involve the students as active learners. When students learn to picture the setting, imagine character traits, and make connections between story characters’ experiences and their own experiences, listening and comprehension skills intensify and their attention span and retention skills increase. Join Tracy Milsap, professional storyteller and story educator for this insightful, innovative and inspiring seminar experience. Tracy Milsap is the founder and president of Story Vision. She is the recipient of the 1991 Missouri Lottery “Real Winner” award and the 1992 Missouri NEA “Horace Mann” Award. Tracy has participated in KCPT’s “History Weavers” series.

Motion is the medium to explore our fluid and changing weather. Learn strategies that relate movements of the body and elements of dance to the dynamic exchanges of heat and pressure that rule weather conditions in the atmosphere, cloud formations, and other weather phenomena. This seminar was developed in association with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

WE HAVE A NEW HOME! We’ve created a permanent home for our arts education programs in the heart of the city! We opened the doors of our new home at 3732 Main Street in January 2017. Our new building allows us to fully embrace our role as an arts education leader and hub of creativity. With increased space we can host new field trips, workshops, and professional development. Having a space for artists and educators to gather and collaborate will lead to exciting new programs that will benefit children all over the city – especially those without equal access to arts educaton.
