SPRING Kansas City Young Audiences
Impact Report
2017
Dear Friends, As many of you know, 2016 was one of the most exciting in the 56 year history of KCYA. In the past 12 months we located, purchased, renovated and moved into our new home at 3732 Main Street. It’s been a remarkable experience; one that could not have happened without the abundant help of our community. The impact of our relocation continues to unfold as we discover new ways to introduce the arts to more and more of Kansas City’s youth and collaborate with other Arts Partners in our Midtown home.

We also launched the HeART of the CITY Capital Campaign in 2016. We are thrilled with the progress we’ve made so far and it’s difficult to express how grateful we are for the many generous supporters who’ve shared their gifts with us. You’ll find a brief synopsis inside. In October, we gathered with many of our steadfast supporters at the 2016 Arts for Learning and Living Luncheon. Honorary Co-Chairs Bill and Christy Gautreaux helped us celebrate the important work of Kellie Brady (recipient of the Distinguished Educator Award), Heather Nisbett-Loewenstein (recipient of the Lighton Prize Award), and Katie Wendel (recipient of the Trudy Award). Please save the date (Saturday, October 7) for our 2017 Benefit Concert for Arts Education with the Kansas City Symphony. We are thrilled to announce that this year’s artist is Tony Award winning actor and singer Brian Stokes Mitchell. Sponsorships for this exciting event are now available. (Contact Christian Buller at 816.531.4022 ext. 1015) We cannot thank you enough, our KCYA family, for your support and encouragement this past year. With your help, we are able to fully embrace our role as an arts leader and hub of creativity in Kansas City. Our new home gives us the opportunity to expand our scope and reach out to even more children with the transformational power of the arts. Thank you. Sincerely, Martin English Executive Director

S.t.e.A.m. Residency project phase ii summer at St. Agnes Catholic School in Westwood, KS and at Mark Twain Elementary in Kansas City, KS. In these summer enrichment programs, students worked together using the arts to master STEM concepts. In October KCYA offered a professional development seminar to explore best practices in arts integration. Classroom teachers and KCYA teaching artists attended. Later in the fall KCYA and the KC STEM Alliance expanded the residency project to twelve schools, including schools in Shawnee Mission, Liberty, Belton, Grandview, and Kansas City, MO. Classroom teachers and teaching artists developed arts-based lesson plans and co-taught STEM concepts. Students used collaboration and the engineering design process to learn the curriculum.

Through the generous support of DST Systems and the Francis Family Foundation, KCYA and the KC STEM Alliance are continuing our partnership and finishing up Phase II of our STEAM residency project. The project pairs KCYA professional teaching artists with classroom teachers to present science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum (STEM). By using the arts to learn STEM curriculum, students build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In the spring of 2016 the program was piloted at Lewis and Clark in Liberty, Hillcrest STEAM Academy in Belton, and Crossroads Academy in Kansas City, MO. Additional residencies took place last
Financial Summary
“I loved the opportunity of having a resident artist from KCYA in my classroom with my students and me. It’s one thing to plan a lesson together, but actually co-teaching with them brings the lesson to life. I know I will be able to take things I learned from Jay Cady (teaching artist) and implement them in other areas of learning with my students!” Brandon Lewis Lewis and Clark Elementary We look forward to further collaboration with the KC STEM Alliance to bring more arts into the STEM curriculum!

A dream so big we had to grow into it After sixteen months of searching, visits to nearly fifty properties, and seven months of planning and construction, KCYA finally has moved into the first permanent home in our 56 year history! Designed by Helix Architecture + Design and renovated by McCownGordon Construction, our new home at 3732 Main Street has quickly become a hub of creativity in the heart of Kansas City. On January 21, we welcomed nearly 600 children, families, teachers, and supporters to an inspiring Grand Opening Celebration.
Our new home: 3732 Main Street
In just three months since the grand opening, 3732 Main has allowed KCYA to host a professional development workshop with KC STEM Alliance, art exhibitions with Community Linc and The Whole Person, a student theatre performance with our tenant partner, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, and one of the most exhilarating Community School of the Arts sessions in recent memory! “We cannot underestimate the value of the arts, not just in our city, not just as an economic driver, but as something that brings peace to our souls and our minds.” Mayor Sly James at the KCYA Grand Opening Celebration Since announcing the HeART of the CITY Capital Campaign less than a year ago—and thanks in part to leadership gifts from the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation and Hall Family Foundation—we have raised more than $3 million towards the purchase and renovation of 3732 Main Street! The journey is not over, but we look forward to

continued support from the Kansas City community to help us reach our goal. Owning a building has certainly presented KCYA with a new set of challenges, but we are eager to explore the opportunities our new home will create for our students, teaching artists, educators, Arts Partners, and the greater Kansas City community!

CSA Summer scholarship fund
January was an exciting month here at KCYA. We were thrilled to open our doors and introduce our Community School of the Arts (CSA) students to their new creative space! It is so rewarding to see our new home filled with children dancing, singing, acting, drawing, playing and expressing themselves. We are pleased to report that the CSA is thriving in our new home. A variety of dance, theatre, music and visual arts classes are held nearly every day of the week. We were even able to add some new classes to our schedule. And this spring we saw the number of enrollments increase 30% compared to last spring’s numbers! As part of this growth, we have also seen
an increase in the number of students who need financial support in order to participate in our classes. This spring we provided 83 scholarships, up from 60 last spring; and we saw the total amount of scholarship money awarded soar 65% (to more than $9,500). Our scholarships are funded entirely by DONORS LIKE YOU! Please consider a donation to our summer scholarship fund – because every child deserves the transformational spark the arts ignite! Summer is right around the corner. And again this year, the CSA is offering 8 weeks of engaging arts camps and classes. We
anticipate the upward trend in our enrollment numbers will continue. We need your help to fill the $5,000 scholarship gap for summer.
