WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR
WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR
Welcome to KCYA, where we believe EVERY CHILD DESERVES THE TRANSFORMATIONAL SPARK THE ARTS IGNITE. This belief is at the heart of all we do. For more than 55 years, KCYA has been providing Kansas City’s children with high-quality arts experiences, often the first arts encounters they’ve ever had. We see first-hand the positive, and often life-changing, impact the arts can have on students, and on our community as a whole. It’s proven that when arts education is woven into classroom curriculum, students are more excited about learning, achievement levels rise, and school attendance soars. Arts programming in schools leads to more engaged, higher achieving students who grow into more culturally aware, engaged citizens as adults. Through our in-school programs, we place professional teaching artists in the classroom to inspire students to discover new perspectives and new forms of expression. Our teaching artists bring their art into your classroom to help bring curriculum to life. Dynamic programs covering numerous academic topics in many artistic disciplines can be found in our catalog. Explore what KCYA has to offer and empower your students with confidence, curiosity, and boundless opportunity.
PARTICIPATION IN THE ARTS RESULTS IN . . . ...increased ENGAGEMENT ...higher GRADUATION rates ...better ATTENDANCE ...fewer BEHAVIORAL issues ...better CULTURAL AWARENESS ...enhanced LEADERSHIP SKILLS ...greater CIVIC PARTICIPATION

WELCOME TO KCYA
WHO WE ARE Kansas City Young Audiences (KCYA) has been the leading provider of high–quality arts education since 1961. Established as a non–profit agency by a group of dedicated volunteers, KCYA’s original mission was to provide children in Kansas City schools an opportunity to see and hear classical music performances. Since that time, Kansas City Young Audiences has expanded and now provides programs in creative writing, dance, theatre, visual arts and music, serving the greater Kansas City area, Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri. KCYA is an affiliate of the national Young Audiences Arts for Learning network, the leading provider of arts education programs in the United States. Kansas City Young Audiences arts programs have helped more than 5 million children discover new ways of seeing things and expressing themselves.
WHAT WE DO Kansas City Young Audineces works with a roster of more than 150 artists to provide dynamic and educational arts programs to children throughout the greater Kansas City area in schools, libraries, community centers, and at our facility. We offer performances, residencies, workshops, professional development and after–school programs in most artistic disciplines. DINO O’DELL

TOGETHER WE CAN SPARK SUCCESS IN STEM LEARNING THROUGH ARTS INTEGRATION!
In a climate of economic uncertainty, America is once again turning to innovation as the way to ensure a prosperous future. Often, innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects. However, Art + Design are equally poised to transform our economy in the 21st century. Adding Art + Design to the equation transforms STEM into STEAM and leverages the inherent creativity needed to drive innovation. Kansas City Young Audiences and KC STEM Alliance are partnering to develop strategies to power the STEAM initiative – the movement to integrate the arts into STEM curriculum – in our region.
“The collaborative nature of the teaching put me in a position where I could react to the flow of ideas in the classroom and enhance the learning with largely improvised arts activities.” Jay Cady Teaching Artist 62

“I loved the opportunity of having a resident artist from KCYA in my classroom. It’s one thing to plan a lesson together, but actually coteaching with them brings the lesson to life. I know I will be able to take things I learned from Jay and implement them in other areas of learning with my students!”

CLAY AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR SELF–EXPRESSION (Visual Art) MYRNA MINNIS $450 for 3-hour seminar For many students, clay is their favorite medium. This hands–on seminar introduces teachers to the exciting and no–fail concept of the ‘Oogly.’ The ‘Oogly’ gives students a structure for experiencing their creative spirit and a comfortable medium for self–expression. Participants will learn how to help each student create a unique and individualized creation. CURRICULUM ALIVE: READERS THEATRE (Theatre) SUSANSYLVIA SCOTT Master Teaching Artist, Lighton Prize $450 for 3-hour seminar This workshop teaches the educator how to energize subject matter, enhance student retention, and increase class involvement by guiding students to research, write, and present their findings. Workshop participants learn how to help students create a script and then use gesture and vocalization to enliven their presentations. This powerful team-building process helps students improve comprehension skills and reading ability, as well as strengthening the teacher-student dynamic. Teachers will leave the workshop with a sample Readers Theatre script and a book to use as reference. DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS THROUGH PUPPETRY (Writing, Theatre, Visual Art) LISA JORGENSEN $450 for 3-hour seminar, plus $5 per participant Puppetry is a powerful tool for learning because it teaches children through play. Puppetry incorporates visual art, theatre, and music. The use of these arts disciplines forms a foundation around which teachers are able to integrate the curriculum and support a child’s success. Puppetry can be used to develop creative writing and body coordination. Through writing and movement exercises, all students are encouraged to express and formulate their own ideas and emotions. This seminar provides practical, hands–on experience for elementary teachers. READING AND RHYTHM: ENHANCING READING SKILLS THROUGH DRUMMING (Music) BIRD FLEMING Master Teaching Artist, Lighton Prize $450 for 3-hour seminar Using the West African drumming technique and style as a method and format, teachers will learn how the flow and pulse of beats within the rhythm patterns help students increase their reading fluidity and speed. This hand drumming involves a concentrated effort of maintaining eye/hand coordination when playing the drums, which enables students to develop a consistent connection between their eyes and their reading assignments. Teachers will see how, through the complex but attainable nature of assembling tones, patterns, and rhythmic phrases, students will learn composition and improve memory retention as well as reading comprehension.
