“A Dream Ring”
How to Choose a Diamond Engagement Ring
For one of the most memorable moments of one’s lifetime, selecting an engagement ring is at the top of the list. It will follow with more moments to remember. When shopping for the special diamond, be sure you have an idea of the style and how much you can afford to spend. Buying a diamond is a large investment of money, so knowing the personality of the person you are buying the diamond for is important. What type of jewelry do they wear? Contemporary, antique, modern, etc.? Do they like a solitaire diamond or do they like accents? Does their job restrict the kind of rings they wear? Do they have a stone shape they like? Social media has played a big part in trending of styles and cuts of diamonds. While trends are fun, knowing 12
the four C’s when picking a diamond is very important. Cut – the cut grade determines how much light is returned out of the top of a diamond. In layman’s terms, the sparkle and wow of the diamond. Color – refers to the whiteness or lack of color in a diamond. Clarity – is based on the type and size of natural occurring inclusions found within the diamond. Carat – is the actual weight or size of a diamond. Knowing the four C’s is great, but more important in choosing YOUR special diamond is to go to someone you can trust to give you the correct information and lead you to a wise choice. In today’s world, be sure to be wise and know the details. Before you buy, you should see, touch and feel to know you have made the right choice by getting as much information you can.

UNITY CEREMONIES
Including a unity ceremony is one way that you can make your wedding day
truly personal for you and your spouse-to-be. Lighting a unity candle has long been a traditional part of the wedding ceremony – providing the bride and groom with a visual symbol to display the joining of their lives. Today, creative couples have found a myriad of new (and old) ways to celebrate and symbolize their unions. If you are looking for a way to add a unity element to your nuptials, here are a few ways you can go, based on you and your intended’s own preferences and styles. If none of these ideas are quite your style, another option is to create your own, unique unity ceremony. In addition to the ideas listed here, you can find even more suggestions by searching online for “unity ceremonies.” Offbeatbride.com also offers examples of couples who have designed their own personalized unity ceremonies.
TRADITIONAL
Unity Candle: The bride and groom each take a lighted candle and use them to light one candle together. Each then blows out his or her individual candle. Rose Ceremony: The bride and groom exchange roses as their first gifts to one another. Wine Ceremony: The bride and groom each take a carafe of wine and pour it into a single glass, from which they both drink. Sand Ceremony: The couple pours different-colored sands into a single vessel. Salt Covenant: The couple pours two separate jars of salt together.
COMMEMORATIVE
24
Wine Box/Love Letter Ceremony: A wine box is sealed during the ceremony with a special bottle of wine to open on the first anniversary. Sealed letters expressing what the bride and groom love about each other can also be included. Branding Ceremony: The couple brands a piece of decorative wood or pallet with new married monogram to display in home Hour Glass Ceremony: This is basically the same as the sand ceremony (see above), but the sand is poured into an hour glass that can be used in the couple’s home. Tree Planting Ceremony: The bride and groom plant a tree together with a little dirt from each of one’s childhood home. An option is to have the parents water the tree. Tying the Knot Ceremony: Both the groom’s mom and the bride’s mom present the couple with a long piece of thick ribbon or cord (two different colors) which the couple ties in a knot. The couple can also plan to “tie the knot” every year on their anniversary with the same piece of ribbon/cord. Truce Bell: A bell is rung on the wedding day, and then is placed in a central location in the home. If the couple starts to argue, one of them can ring the truce bell. Painting Ceremony: The couple creates a painting together during the ceremony.
RELIGIOUS
The Cord of Three Strands Ceremony: Taken from Ecclesiastes 4:12, the braiding of rope together symbolizes the joining of one man, one woman, and God into a marriage relationship. Foot Washing Ceremony: The couple washes each others’ feet as described in the Bible when Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. The Unity Cross: This is a multi-piece sculpture: The groom places the outer cross in a wood base. The bride then places a more delicate cross inside of the groom’s cross, and the couple then uses three golden pegs to lock the cross together in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
CULTURAL/ETHNIC
Celtic Oathing Stone: The couple holds or puts their hands on a stone during their vows to “set them in stone.” Handfasting: A simple and traditional ceremony used in Irish, Scottish, and Welsh weddings, handfasting involves wrapping different colored ribbons into the infinity shape on the couple’s hands during the wedding vows. Tasting of Four Elements: An African-American wedding tradition, this ritual symbolizes the wedding promise to love “for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.” Lemon, vinegar, cayenne pepper, and honey represent the sour, the bitter, the hot, and the sweet times of marriage. German Wedding Cup: This ritual involves a special cup that swivels to allow two people to drink from it at the same time. Red String of Fate: Originating from Asian legend, the couple ties their small fingers together with red string. Broom Jumping: A centuries-old African American tradition involves a handmade natural-bristled broom decorated with ribbons, flowers, and mementos. The bride and groom jump over the broom as an act of sweeping away any past wrongdoings and welcoming new beginnings as husband and wife.
GET THE GUESTS INVOLVED
The Pebble Tradition: Have everyone who attends the ceremony hold a rock and bless it during the ceremony. After the ceremony, each attendee places his or her rock in a vase or other container for the newlyweds to display in their home. Ring Warming Ceremony: The wedding rings are passed around the room on a pillow or in a bag. Everyone holds the rings for a few seconds and says a little blessing/prayer for them. When it is time for the vows, the rings will have made their way all the way around the room. An alternative is to have the rings displayed at the ceremony entrance and have guests convey blessings before they take their seats. Flower Circles: Guests come forward, pick flowers out of a vase, and lay them in two conjoined circles, forming an eternity symbol. The couple stands in the circles throughout the rest of the service. Reverse Unity Candle: After the bride and groom light the main unity candle, they continue down into the pews to begin lighting the candle of the maid of honor and best man, who then continue passing the flame one by one until every candle in the crowd is lit. This is especially beautiful for evening weddings.

At midnight, a cascade of balloons fell on the dance floor to celebrate their wedding and the welcoming of a new year. They used many of the holiday decorations at LeGrand and added some personal touches throughout the venue. Thank you Brittany and Jason for allowing our readers to get a peek at your reception.
