Visitors Are Talking!

We had a wonderful time. All of us left Shelby with a memory of a lifetime and a yearning to return next year. The people of Shelby are awesome. Everyone and I mean everyone was excited to meet us, talk to us, serve us, and welcome us. Bob G. – Coach - Omaha, Nebraska Legion Team after their appearance in the 2014 American Legion World Series. I’d like to bring hard-core Scruggs banjo freaks to visit Earl’s home town. We love to feel the air and everything around there. I had the greatest time in Shelby this year Toshio W. - Earl Scruggs Center visitor – 2013 and 2014 - Japan My favorite things are the people we have met here, the real hospitality, and making friends with someone from Shelby (or Moss Lake) just because we sat next to them. Laura F. – ALWS visitor for 4 years – Converse, Texas Your town is beautiful and when I was at the Earl Scruggs Center, “you treated me like I was the King of Holland.” Peter C. -Earl Scruggs Center visitor – 2014 – Netherlands My husband and I walked the majority of this trail recently. It was well maintained and gave us a variety of scenery, surfaces, and difficulty levels. We will be returning again to complete the 2.8 Foote Trail. OUTDOORS IN CLEVELAND COUNTY

The highs are seldom so high and the lows are seldom so low that visitors to Cleveland County can’t experience the outdoor life every day of the year. Right in the heart of Shelby on Sumter Street is Shelby City Park with a children’s playground, ninehole golf course, tennis court, 1,600-seat gymnasium, an Olympic pool that hosts swim meets, and athletic fields that draw baseball and softball tournaments. The park is also popular for its 1952 Rotary Special Miniature Train and one of the few year-round carrousels (circa 1919) still found in its traditional city park location. The 29-horse carrousel is the centerpiece of the Foothills Merry Go Round Festival every April. Visitors interested in hiking and history can take a walking tour of the Central Shelby Historic District that passes homes and businesses built from the 1850s forward and Sunset Cemetery, established in 1841, the same year Cleveland County was carved from the already existing Lincoln and Rutherford counties. A printed guide for the tour is available at the Cleveland County Chamber. Anyone eager for a longer stretch of the legs can investigate the Carolina Thread Trail, a network of greenways and trails that reaches 15 counties. The Kings Mountain Gateway Trails (807 South Battleground Avenue, Kings Mountain) constitute 5.5 miles of scenic trails for hiking and biking and provide restrooms, a picnic area and a shelter. The Broad River Greenway portion of the Carolina Thread Trail (Highway 150 South, Boiling Springs) has 15 miles of multi-use trail and 1,900 linear feet of trail accessible for handicapped individuals. The Greenway has a picnic shelter and areas for swimming, boating, tubing and horseback Photos by www.CCEDP.com

CLEVELAND COUNTY Any month is a good month for visitors who have a fondness for museums, like the Earl Scruggs Center: Music & Stories from the American South, Kings Mountain Historical Museum and the Presidential Culinary Museum. In addition, performance centers such as the Don Gibson Theatre, Gardner-Webb University’s Blanton Auditorium and Dover Theatre, and the Joy Performance Center offer a variety of live artists and stage plays year-round. Here’s a brief guide to some of each month’s activities, the average temperature during the month and suggested clothing for comfort, depending on your personal thermostat. JANUARY & FEBRUARY: Average temperature of 45˚F can dip to 12˚ or zip to 77˚. Bring a jacket with a hood, gloves and thick socks plus a light longsleeved shirt in case the 70s make an appearance in Cleveland County’s two coldest months. You may see some snow, but the average annual snowfall is only 4 inches. February is noted for the “Treasures of the Earth” Pottery Show and Sale. MARCH: Average temperature of 53˚F, but can plunge into the teens or escalate to the mid-80s. Plan to dress in layers so you can add or peel. If you are planning a wedding The Cleveland County Bridal Fair is held the first Saturday and Sunday in March . APRIL: Average temperature of 61˚F with some lows in the 20s and highs hitting 90˚. April is another month for layered clothing. You can enjoy Easter egg hunts, Civil War period re-enactors, Arts on the Square and the Foothills Merry Go Round Festival. MAY: Average temperature of 67˚F with lows touching 40˚ and highs reaching 90˚. Tuck a lightweight jacket in with your shorts and T-shirts. Whether you compete or cheer from the sidelines, take in the Over the Mountain Triathlon, one of only six National Championship Qualifiers. JUNE: Average temperature of 76˚F with lows around 50˚ and highs touching 100˚. Shorts and T-shirts rule but a lightweight jacket will feel good at 50˚. Join cowboys and cowgirls for the Polkville IPRA Rodeo, a tradition since 2000.

BY THE MONTH JULY: Average temperature of 77˚ with lows that may reach 55˚ and highs that could push 100˚. In addition to warm weather attire, add a layer of sunscreen! Fourth of July celebrations abound, plus the Real to Reel International Film Festival and the Kings Mountain Beach Blast. AUGUST: Average temperature of 79˚, the highest monthly average of the year. Minimum temperatures may touch the mid-60s and the maximums may reach 102˚. Wear your coolest gear! The county’s only annual national sports event, the six-day American Legion World Series, is held at Keeter Stadium. SEPTEMBER: Average temperature of 72˚F with the lows heading into the mid40s and the highs in the mid-90s. Most days call for T-shirts and shorts but you might carry a lightweight jacket to the Cleveland County Fair, the state’s largest county fair, which runs for 11 days. OCTOBER: Average temperature of 60˚F with minimum temps down to 30˚ and maximums up to 90˚. Lightweight long-sleeved shirts usually suffice but a medium-weight jacket feels good from the middle of the month when Mush, Music and Mutts (the Official N.C. Fall Liver Mush Festival) comes to Shelby’s historic Court Square. The Art of Sound and certain haunted events come ‘round later in the month. NOVEMBER: Average temperature of 51˚F with the possibility of high teens for lows and low 80s for highs. Layered clothing is recommended with a medium-toheavy jacket on hand. Barbecue fiends gather for the Hog Happnin’ Kansas City BBQ Competition and those ready for the holidays visit the Enchanted Forest at the Broad River Greenway. DECEMBER: Average temperature of 45˚F but Christmas could see the high teens or the high 70s. The county’s highest monthly rainfall is recorded in December, so have some headwear handy, along with some thermal underwear and several top layers, including a heavy jacket, gloves and thick socks. Gardner-Webb University’s Festival of Lights, a party with Santa at Shelby City Park’s Carrousel and the Gingerbread Exhibit at the Presidential Culinary Museum are holiday highlights. Out-Of-The-Way Food We also want to tell you about some out-of-the-way places you might want to put on your list to discover... Bolton’s Grill 2312 S. Post Road, Shelby Located between Earl and Patterson Springs, this is a hidden secret you would miss if you didn’t know it was there. Serving breakfast that’s affordable and just plain good, they are open Monday – Friday 6 am – 9 pm and Saturday 6 am – 4 pm. Of course, their hot dogs and hamburgers are a must-try for a quick tasty treat. Bulldog Quik-Snak 131 N. Main St., Boiling Springs As you walk in the door, the first things you notice are the large photos of Gardner-Webb University today and in the past. While it’s popular with GardnerWebb students, you will also find locals joining them for down-home cooking from breakfast to dinner. The menu is affordable and the food is like your mama makes so you can have that touch of home while you are away from home. Carolina Crossing Restaurant 218 N. Main St., Grover Carolina Crossing is home-style cooking with Southern hospitality. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday – Saturday and breakfast and lunch Sunday. Everybody in your group will find something to like, thanks to the diverse menu. The Depot Café 202 Price St., Lattimore This is hometown charm at its best, the owners post their menu on Facebook every day and the servings are very generous. Since opening in 2008, the café area has expanded twice into space adjacent to the café. The spaces they expanded to were once used by the Lattimore Barbershop and Accounting Service of Lattimore. You might spend more time looking at all the history on the walls than you’ve allotted for your lunch break. Now that gives you something to talk about!

Jan’s Restaurant 4902 Fallston Road, Fallston Jan’s is a favorite of many in the upper end of the county for breakfast, lunch or an early dinner. Open 7 am – 7 pm Tuesday – Friday and 7 am – 3 pm Saturday. Whether you just want a good cup of coffee, full breakfast or lunch on the run, the menu at Jan’s has what you need. You might even get a chance to hear the locals “talking about” the latest happenings in the area. Love’s Fish Box 1104 Shelby Road, Kings Mountain Looking for the old-time fish camp atmosphere? Then Love’s Fish Box is for you. The portions are hearty, the staff is friendly and the rustic décor in the dining room give you that feel. Open Tuesday – Saturday for lunch and dinner, the Love’s menu is so varied even the pickiest eaters can find something they’ll love to talk about after your trip is over.

People Are Talking FOOD!!!

To find out what “People are Talking About” when it comes to restaurants, we went to social media to gather some comments: “Upscale Dining on Main Street Shelby”

NiFen Bistro Linda H. Parks: Ni Fen is a nice treat. The food is presented well, great service and very friendly. Owner, Jeanette is accommodating and makes guest feel welcome. Must tries: Fried oyster salad, pot stickers and a fabulous banana ice cream dessert with bourbon liqueur that you must see to appreciate. (Posted on NiFen’s Facebook page) “Juicy burger”

Newt’s Pub Burgers Marie Walker: My burger was juicy as ever! Everything was excellent! The chicken wings were great too! I do believe if you have had a bad experience anywhere you need to always give them a second chance. Great beer choice too! Music was great at outside seating. Kids played with chalk on the sidewalk while me and my husband relaxed. Cheers! (Posted on Newt’s Facebook page) “Newcomer Finds a Favorite”

Smoke on the Square

Katie Lee Clark: We recently moved to Shelby, and although very apprehensive about this new move... we now know we will be fine as long as we have Smoke on the Square! We ate here for the first time last night, and 24 hours later we are still talking about our food and the overall experience. Wonderful service, delicious food, and great atmosphere!! Thanks for exceeding our expectations! Excited to make this establishment a weekly regular for us!! (Posted on Smoke on the Square’s Facebook Page) Toll Free: 866-305-9973 e 35
