Proposal Stories

Erin Davis and Justin Witherspoon “Our Story”As told by Erin and Edited by Justin

6

Justin and I met at Bible study (“Foundation”) somewhere around 2008. We became fast friends (she paid me no attention), kind of went on a date (I asked her on two dates!), but the timing must have been off because for the next five years or so we remained just friends. We would occasionally (I would send her messages trying to give her a hint!) (every 6 months or so) chat via Facebook or text and never lost contact completely. In the summer of 2012, I decided it was time for us to chat in person, so we met at a local country concert to have a free beer (or two) and size each other up (I was going to the concert anyways; it’s not like she forced me to go). I liked what I saw, and I’m guessing he did too (she was right)! Ha! (He was also funny, sweet and charming) So, we decided to hangout again that Friday night (I decided I would be nice and hang out with the poor girl). After an evening of learning to play Mexican-Train Dominoes (and kicking Justin’s butt!) (I’ve never lost at this game), a couple Corona’s with lime and laughing until my face hurt, I knew there was something special about that boy (duh). We started to spend much more time together. Our friendship and feelings grew deeper as the talks got longer. We would play 20 questions and talk for hours while sitting on the back porch swing (I miss swing time). In December 2012, Justin told me he loved me! (FINALLY!!) (Any sooner would have been too soon) Obviously I felt the same way, and we began to talk about a future together and what we both wanted from life (I think we only agreed on a wrap around porch). In June 2013, Justin snuck over to my parent’s house and asked them for permission to marry me (they said yes)! (HOW SWEET!!) My family sure can keep a secret better than I thought (and better than Erin), because he waited until October 19, 2013 to propose! He had planned do to is sooner, but due to some hiccups in his perfect plan, it had to be pushed back a time or two. He schemed with our families (and friends) for a long time to pull off this secret surprise. He chose the absolute perfect proposal for this runner-girl!! He started the 5K (3.1 mi) race at the same time as me, and he should have been behind me (I’m currently 2-0 in races against Erin), so that contributed to my confusion of why he was at the finish line(I finished in under 5 minutes, current world record). At the end of the race I was out of breath, overwhelmed, and so happy I could have popped! There were tears of joy, hugs, and lots of laughter! (I still can’t believe he got me so good!) I am so excited to call Justin Witherspoon my fiance, and I cannot WAIT (you’re gonna have to) to call this sweet man my husband. I am so happy and at peace knowing I will spend the rest of my life with my best friend and the love of my life! (I love you babe)

Jada & Matt Henderson – One evening Matt and I were riding around town looking at a few of our favorite places to hang out. I was really confused at what we were doing, because while we were looking at all of these places…we were never getting out of the car! We finally pulled over on a spot near the lake and watched the sunset. Still nothing. When we left, I asked him to take me to McDonald’s for a McFlurry, (another one of our favorites) then we went back to Matt’s apartment which was actually a room he set up in my daddy’s barn! I was lying on the couch watching TV, eating my McFlurry when I looked over and saw Matt beside me on his knee with a ring in his hand! I jumped up and said “ARE YOU SERIOUS? DID YOU ASK MY DAD!?” Thankfully he had and we have been happily married for 11 years! Vonn & Mike McGee –

One day while at work Mike called me up and asked if I wanted to go hike Crowders Mountian. We did that often as a date night, because it was one of our favorite spots to go pray together. However, it was a very windy day, pretty, but windy, and I wasn’t that excited about going. When I got off work, he came and picked me up like he always did. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. All the way up the mountain he kept saying, “this is going to be great when we get to the top.” In my head, I was thinking “how could this be great? This wind is terrible!” When we got up to the top, he wanted me to check out the view through the binoculars… he stood me up on a rock where we always go and said, “Look at this view today, isn’t it beautiful!” When I held it up to my eye, he had put the ring in the eye piece! He asked me if I would spend the rest of my life with him, and I said Yes! Because of the weather, we were the only ones on the mountain that day with the exception of one lone hiker who Mike had found on the way up (he beat me to the top because he was so excited). He handed him his camera and asked him to take a picture! Totally unplanned! The guy took a picture on the mountain, and I will cherish that photo forever! After that, the guy disappeared and we couldn’t find him anywhere! I never even saw him! Mandy Jefferies and Brent Knight I had been dating Brent for a while and knew that we would spend the rest of our lives together, but I didn’t know how it would begin. It was a Tuesday and the Weather Channel had been calling for snow. All of a sudden, the principal at the school where I work announced that we needed to release the students at noon, because it had started snowing and the roads might freeze. Brent was in the process of purchasing a house in Shelby and had an appointment for the home inspection at 12:30. When he heard about the early release, he asked if I could come to the home inspection with him. I was able to get to the house around 1:00 and ended up socializing with the couple he was buying the house from instead of following the inspector around. I explained to them how I hoped it would be my future house if we were to get married someday. After the inspection ended, Brent took me down to the basement to update me on everything that had been said. After I thought I had heard everything, I started going upstairs because I was ready to grab some lunch. As soon as I made it to the top of the stairs, he yelled for me to come back down because there was something he forgot to show me. When I made it to the bottom of the stairs, he was on one knee holding the most beautiful ring in the world. He explained that it was important for the inspection to go well, but that the house meant nothing if he didn’t have me to share it with. He asked me to marry him, and once I was able to process the question, I happily agreed!

Brides and Grooms Tell All Alexa Shull: My fit-and-flare lace dress was exactly what I had envisioned myself wearing on my wedding day; however, it was June and it was HOT. I wish I would have had a cute LWD (little white dress) to slip on for the reception! Will Shull: I wish she would have told me that there were two garters on her leg and I was only supposed to remove one of them to toss. How was I supposed to know?!

Katie Ringley: Fitness is a huge part of my life, so, naturally I agreed when the DJ asked my husband and I to have a push-up contest on the dance floor. Too bad I forgot I was in a wedding dress! I had dirt on my dress for the rest of the night! Tanner Ringley: I wish Katie would have told me to have a snack before all the festivities! Between all of the greetings and “thank you for coming,” we hardly had time to eat! Maybe this was a good thing though; I wasn’t too excited about sitting at a round table in the middle of everyone eating while our guests stared at us.

Deshay Oliver: It was always a dream of mine to get married on the beach, but with a beach ceremony comes beach wind! I wish someone would have said “Hey, that lip gloss probably isn’t a good idea!” My hair was stuck to my mouth the entire time! Ty Oliver: Lose the shimmer. I’m bald so my head shines enough, but on our wedding night I spent most of the evening explaining why I had glitter on my lips. Thanks Shay, but pink isn’t really my color!

Brittany Bailey: It poured rain on our wedding day (it was an outdoor ceremony by the way), and most of our guests had to hold umbrellas. I wish I would have provided umbrellas or asked everyone to bring a black one. ALL of our pictures look like we are under a circus tent! Brad Bailey: I work outside, and the weekend before the wedding I jammed my finger. I wish Brittany would have made me try my ring on before the ceremony! By the time we got to the alter, my finger was still swollen and she had to do some serious wiggling!

Your Dress, Your Body

Your wedding dress needs to show your assets and hide any imperfections. Knowing your shape is the best place to start understanding what styles will suit you and what you need to avoid. If there is a particular design you have set your heart on, it is always possible to just make a few simple adjustments to make it suit your shape, keeping the personality of the dress that made you fall in love with it.

There are 5 main body shapes:

Pears have larger hips than bust/shoulders. Columns are straight with bust, waist and hips of roughly the same measurement. Apples are round with a larger waist measurement than hips or bust. Hourglasses have bust and hips of about the same measurements with a smaller waist. Strawberries have larger bust/shoulders measurements than hips. Pears have larger hips than shoulders/bust. This is probably the most common shape in Ireland with most of us carrying our weight in our hips, and is really quite simple to find the right shape for if you just keep a few simple things in mind. What to avoid: Steer clear of dresses that are fitted over the hips such as columnar, mermaid and fishtail styles. If you have small or undefined shoulders strapless gowns will only draw attention to them. What to go for: Ball-gown and most a-line dresses will skim over your hips and show off your small waist. For pears with high hips an empire line dress with a short fitted bodice will move your waistline up to the smallest part of your body. High necklines such as boat necks can be great at maximising your bust and off the shoulder portrait styles with draping can create volume on your shoulders. If you have a small bust but well defined shoulders assymetrical one shoulder dresses will show off your shoulders and draw the eye away from the hips

18

Columns are roughly straight up and down with similar width shoulders, waist and hips. The best designs for columns are ones that create a waist while subtly creating volume on the hips and neckline detail that draws attention to the bust. What to avoid: Plunging necklines will only serve to emphasise what you don’t have, and empire line dresses will leave you with no clear waist. Stay clear of overly elaborate waist detailing that create extra width where you don’t want it. What to go for: Flared skirts will create volume on the hips and give you a waist. Instead of deep cleavage go for low backs which bring the attention down to your waist, and necklines that give the illusion of a bigger bust than you have.

Apples have a larger waist than shoulders or hips. Probably one of the more difficult shapes to dress but a few simple tricks will balance out your shape and create the illusion of an hourglass silhouette. What to avoid: Bodices that are fitted all the way to the hips will only make you look rounder. Slinky mermaid or fishtail dresses will cling to your hips and make your top half look bigger. What to go for: Empire line dresses are the best choice as they will show off your bust and then fall over your waist disguising your mid section. A-line dresses can also work if the flair starts high enough to give you a waist. Deep ‘v’ and crossover necklines will show off your bust and sleeves, straps or a bolero or shrug will take some of the width off your shoulder and create balance with your hips. Hourglasses are the classic ideal shape, with bigger hips and bust or shoulders and a small, well-defined waist. These very lucky brides have few limitations when choosing a wedding gown. What to avoid: Empire line dresses or anything without a natural waist will hide your beautiful curves and make your waist look bigger than it is. For those hourglasses with bigger busts it is best to stay away from high necklines which will elongate your chest. What to go for: Trumpet, fishtail or sheath gowns will hug your beautiful curves. Ballgowns and princess dresses can also be beautiful on you, as long as the bodice is long enough to show your shape. For larger busts go for scoop or fairly deep v necklines to modestly show off some décolletage. Strawberrys carry most of their weight in their shoulders or bust with smaller hips. This can be a difficult shape to find a wedding dress for. You will need create a waist by adding flair on the hips and also minimise your bust to keep it balanced with your hips. What to avoid: Overly ornate neckline or shoulder details will create even more volume around your bust. Neither show too much cleavage nor too little, a neckline that is too low will make your bust look even bigger, while one that is too high will make the distance from your neck to waist look too long. Also avoid slinky mermaid or fishtail dresses that cling to the hips you don’t have. What to go for: Sweatheart, scoop and other gently curved necklines will show just enough of your best assets. Gowns that are fitted at the waist and flare out over the hips, such as a-line or ballgown dresses, will create balance in your figure. Petite brides, or “cute as a button” as I like to call them! This is very common in Ireland with the average height of an Irish woman standing at just 5’5”, there are many women in Ireland below this mark. A petite frame can be a fantastic asset but there are certain styles that will overwhelm your short stature. What to avoid: Styles that are fitted below the hips will make your torso look longer and dwarf your legs. Floor length ballgowns will simply be too much for your small frame and too much draping or pleating across the body will create width and make you look even shorter. What to go for: Make sure any details such as bows or embroidery are small scale enough to be in proportion with your body. If you’re set on a full skirt consider a ballerina length that stops just above the ankles, this can be very cute on smaller brides and stops the volume of the dress from engulfing your frame. Sheath dresses are fantastic for elongating your shape and higher waistlines create the illusion of longer legs. Our Thanks to
