WORLDWIDE ADVENTURES FOR KIDS TIMES OF WONDER ON AN AFRICAN ADVENTURE
Alex, our Head of Marketing, usually travels solo with her daughter, Cecily, aged 10. Will her first group family holiday abroad be a success and what does East Africa hold for first-time travellers?
It’s an annual tradition that Cecily and I go camping each year in Scotland with Bunty our dog. It’s one of the most highly anticipated adventures of the year and, to be honest, one of the most back-breaking for me. As any single parent will know, it’s not just the hard work, it’s being sole entertainer. I wrote a feature on the KE website which struck a chord with fellow adventurers, Pete, Jill and their daughter Lizzie, also 10. And before we knew it, we were going to Africa together.

I’m not sure it’s possible to have a more varied and exciting introduction to Kenya and our welcome by Faith and Manu to their traditional Maasai village was a brilliant start. We stayed in a manyetta, a mud-hut and cow-dung cottage, with a bucket shower (scene of a hysterical shower that evening), tracked our first zebra and giraffe through the bush and learnt to brush our teeth Maasai style.
FAMILY ADVENTURE HOLIDAYS Later we sat round the bonfire and sang songs and learnt our first Swahili. Jambo. Jambo Kenya. Wageni Mwakaribishwa. Hello you’re very welcome to Kenya. The next day it was off to wild camp under the acacia trees high in the Chyulu Hills with Kilimanjaro as a majestic backdrop. Once dark, the Milky Way seemed close enough to touch as we sat by the bonfire each night. Our Maasai walking guide, Eno, mimicked the slow, measured huff of a lion breathing which mesmerised the girls. Safari was next, and what a safari it was. Our driver, Jamal, asked the girls how many elephants they wanted to see. They decided ten would be enough. Out by the waterholes of Amboseli National Park, amongst vast herds of zebra and wildebeest, we saw over two hundred.

And finally Zanzibar, of spices and white beaches. Cecily and Lizzie, now firm friends, spent two full days in the pool or in the sea or snorkelling, making a huge amount of high octane fun look effortless. At the Spice Farm, on our last day, we wore coconut leaf crowns, smelled spices straight from the trees and sadly sang Jambo Bwana for the last time. My first trip to East Africa truly surprised me. It’s a wondrous place and having an amazing adventure organised for us every day was, simply, incredible. But more importantly, for me to be alongside Cecily as she discovers the world was a magical opportunity in her final years of childhood. This is a trip that Cecily and I will now share forever. It was a true time of wonder.
The Safari Camp in Tsavo West we will remember for the rest of our lives. The swimming pool was by a waterhole where zebra drank and in the evening our Maasai guide shooed a herd of elephants away from our tent. On our final safari, we saw a huge leopard lazing in a tree, but lions remained elusive. And yes, perched high on a viewpoint, we did all sing songs from the Lion King.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE IN PORTUGAL Parents comment happily that there’s enough space for the kids to find some independence but still be safe. There are swings, hammocks, an outdoor African shower and, best of all, a fresh water lake for swimming with a jumping deck, a zip-wire and paddle boards.
A day in the life of our Portugal family holiday by Alison, our Family Product Manager. Today is our kayaking and bodyboarding session. There’s the expectation of some serious paddle splashing and potential for foul play as we kayak down the river to the beach, but it’s all good fun. Bodyboarding is awesome and then it’s back to our base, the organic farm.

Tonight it’s pizza party night, made in the wood-fired oven on the veranda where the table-tennis sits – a fierce competition has been running all week with a grand final tonight. Tournament over, the cheesy tunes go on, the Vinho Verde flows (for the grown-ups) and everyone dances. A perfect end to the most brilliant family holiday.

TECH-FREE IN SLOVENIA
Busy working mum of two, our Account’s Manager Martina, on her first ever adventure holiday with her son, aged 8.
The last day was so adventurous. We went tobogganing, then we rode the steepest zip wire in Europe and finally it was time for outdoor rock climbing. And the kids still went swimming in the hotel pool before dinner!
Going to the high ropes adventure park the parents become kids again. Laughing, screaming, shouting and words of encouragement were heard aplenty! Even more fun was the rafting - a 7km stretch of the beautiful River Soca. The kids – and some brave parents – slid down into the water on a boat turned improvised slide.
All week, I sat back and let our wonderful guides Ales and Jernej organise everything while the kids had the time of their lives – and not a piece of technology in sight. It will take something very special to beat the high Lennon and I experienced over there. Just an unforgettable, amazing time.
