Feeling the Bern “Hundreds of thousands of bright, young people in this country who have the ability or qualifications cannot go to college for just one reason… their family does not have the money. That’s crazy,”
DEVON ROBERTS

The involvement of young adults was apparent during a town meeting held by democratic candidate Bernie Sanders at the University of New Hampshire. With all of the current issues this country is facing, now is the time for college students and younger generations to become informed and involved in politics, and to get out and vote in the upcoming election. On September 20, college students, community members and others from all over the state gathered in the Hamel Recreation Center to hear Sanders’ ideas and support his campaign. Sanders said that it was the biggest turnout for any presidential candidate in New Hampshire. According to realclearpolitics.com, Sanders currently holds second place in the democratic polls at 23.8 percent. Sanders’ son Levi opened the discussion. “He is the candidate that gives people hope that things can change, and that there can be a better America,” Levi said. Some issues Sanders mentioned included campaign spending, wealth distribution, unemployment and the cost of college. “One of the good things that I think we can do with this campaign is focus on the real issues facing the middle class of this country,” Sanders said. He continued, “If we are going to transform America, we have got to place the major issues facing our country on the
- Bernie Sanders V e r m o n t Senator table.” According to Sanders, the most important issue in this election is the amount spent on campaigns. Sanders said that millionaires and billionaires put so much money into the campaigns in order to elect candidates who will represent them. He said that just one family alone plans to spend 900 million dollars on the 2016 election campaign. “You are not looking at democracy, you are looking at allegarcy,” Sanders said. He said that he plans to vote to overturn Citizens United and give the vote back to the people. Sanders said that this country is the wealthiest in the world, yet so many do not realize this. “In many cases, [people] are working two or three jobs, they are living in poverty, and in some cases they are living out on the street. The reason that we do not believe that we are the wealthiest country in the history of the world is that almost all of that wealth in all of our economy today is going to the top one percent and, together, we are going to change that,” Sanders said. Sanders said that 58 percent of all new income is currently going to this top one percent, and aims to change that. According to omy includes raising the minimum wage. “The reason that people are working so hard, and the reason that in America we work the longest hours out of any people… is that wages in America for millions of

Rethink Marlboro Street supports convenient bicycle travel ALEX ENAYAT
equiNox staff The residents of Keene united Saturday for “Rethink Marlboro Street,” an event that displayed the street as a sustainable and safe environment for pedestrians. The Southwest Region Planning Commission, which currently has two Keene State College Geography majors as interns, was majorly responsible for the event. They helped portray Marlboro Street as a place where people could easily travel through everyday while also being an aesthetically pleasing sight. Spectators spent the day riding their bicycles, utilizing the temporary bike paths on the street. A small park was set up on the corner of Marlboro and Adams

Internet connectivity sparks controversy DEVON ROBERTS
News editor The internet provides a window of opportunities for people to learn, communicate or entertain, and for students it can make or break their ability to participate in class. When the network does not work, it can create a Last Thursday, September 10, the on-campus network at Keene State College was unavailable for stufor day-to-day campus life. ogy, Laura Seraichick said that the outage lasted for about 12 hours from around four in the morning until four in the afternoon. “There was an extensive outage, meaning that it was any kind of information coming in or out. Our network was basically down,” Seraichick said. Without access to the Internet, a number of students were unable to hand in their assignments on time. First-year KSC student Pete Dubois was among these students. He said that his professors were understanding of the situation. “My teachers made accommodations because they realized that it was a school-wide issue,” Dubois said. On the other hand, KSC sophomore Melissa Munoz
Seraichick also said that a part of the problem is that the piece of equipment that was not working did not indicate that there was anything wrong with it. “We did have failure in a piece of equipment that wasn’t actually reporting failure so the vendor engineers are going to take that piece of equipment and do some forensics on it to see what caused it to fail and why it wasn’t reporting that it was failing,” Seraichick said. According to a number of students, it is rumored that the Science Center building was struck by lightning in an electrical storm, resulting in the outage. “That’s speculation, there was a big electrical storm that night, but there was a piece of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning), which is not in our network equipment, which did have something that melted from something kind of like that,” Seraichick said in regards to the rumor. After the long day without any Internet access on back up and running later that afternoon. “We had both our internal engineers and our external engineers, pulled in our peers up at UNH so we could have lots of sets of eyes on the problem,” Seraichick said. At this point, students are still facing issues with their internet connections on campus, preventing them from using it the way that they are used to be able to do, mainly that the Internet has been very slow. First-year student Dan Dubicki said that his major requires him to be able to access the Internet. “I’m a computer science major and everything that I do is on

their IDs to a desk attendant upon entering their dorm late at night. Because of recent budget cuts, Keene State College has been forced to dispose of the desk attendant position. “Budget is budget,” Kent Drake-Deese, Director of Residential Life at Keene State College said. The budget cuts are a result of Keene State’s drop in enrollment for the 2015 fall semester. According to data from The University System of New Hampshire published in the Sentinel, there were a total of 1,458 new students admitted in 2014. This year 1,109 new students were admitted, a 23.94 percent decrease. While some students saw desk attendants as an annoying stop on the way home at night, some saw them as a second line of defense against intruders. “In terms of safety and security… If someone’s alarmed that we don’t have desk attendants, they never were there for [it],” Drake-Deese said. Deese continued, “They’re not trained, they don’t have a badge and they don’t carry guns. They were actually just a monitor.” The desk attendant was a recent implementation The program started in 2008 and was preceded by a night attendant position. “There’s nothing unusual about not having them...most Colleges don’t,” Drake-Deese said. The necessity of the job has been in question even before the drop in enrollment. “Even before the budget cut there was a lot of discussion about not having the desk attendants or cutting them back dramatically because there’s no evidence of

any kind that suggests that they prevent one thing or the other,” Drake-Deese said. He continued, “We have just as much damage, just as much judicial as we did before… so it didn’t stop that. It wasn’t necessarily intended to stop that.” The death of the desk attendant posiincome for some students. Former desk attendant Pam Delisme said “I’m a little upset…it was a job and I really needed it.” “That’s the biggest problem for me,” Drake-Deese said. He said the biggest problem for him is the cut in student jobs. Approximately $60,000 went into the program each year. While it might have made some feel better, paying students was not a good enough reason to keep it, Drake-Deese said. “I don’t mind spending money on students and their employment, but I’d like students to get something out of it,” Drake-Deese said. Desk attending is now the responsibility of Resident Assistants (R.A.s) and they do not have to check IDs. “The R.A. sits there and makes sure nobody who looks out of place enters the building,” said an R.A.
who wishes to remain anonymous because of contractual obligations. If someone who does look out of place enters the R.A. stops them “With the massive budget cuts I can understand why [desk attending] was one of the positions that needed to go,” the R.A. said. “But making the R.A.s replace that time slot without either getting more compensation or checking the IDs was a very silly move because they don’t actually do anything. The entire point of them sitting there for six hours every night is to sign in guest passes and the only time when those would come into play would be a time when campus safety comes into play.” Students also play a role in the security of their dorms. Dorms like the Owl’s Nests and Pondside Two never had desk attendants. “Ultimately our resident halls are locked, which gives students who live in the building ultimate control over the security,” Drake-Deese said. “Nobody gets into our buildings unless someone who has access lets them in.” Alex can be contacted at

Making safety a main concern ing and exciting topic to discuss, but the Equinox believes it’s a conversation worth having. Over the past decade, we’ve heard heart-wrenching news about several shootings. It seems as stores and even the workplace for some, have been targets for these deadly shootings. The purpose of this editorial is not to scare Keene State College students, but rather to new way of looking at our safety as human beings in general, and our safety here on this aware of your surroundings. A scary but worthy question to ask is this: are we ever really safe? This is not to say that Keene State College doesn’t do a good job ensuring our safety, that is not the case at all. However, some instances are extremely unpredictable and we can only hope to be prepared for these kinds of situations. Statistically speaking, we are fortunate to be living in one of the most peaceful centuries yet. The Equinox found this to be very interesting because it seems as though nearly each week, we hear about the latest shooting or tragic event. How can this be possible? cal advances. Think about how quickly the news can spread today. to smartphones where we have news apps. Even for those of us virtually instantly. So it isn’t necessarily that more shootings or violent acts of this nature are happening, but rather we hear about these cases at a much more rapid pace. The era we live in is exposed to so much of what is going on in the world at all times. It’s tough to take a stance on whether this is good or bad. Being an informed citizen is certainly good, however sometimes it’s important to question whether or not we are being exposed to too decades back, we might not be experiencing as many tragedies as it seems. Twenty or thirty years ago these types of shootings were still happening, but it to create and understand a balance. The balance we’re talking about is understanding and being cautious of the fact that danger is always a possibility; it can be lurking around anywhere at anytime. But this should not stop us from conducting ourselves in a normal fashion.Take safe precautionary measures. If you’re walking back to your apartment from campus late at night, try calling a friend to pick you up. Or maybe invest in some mace or something you can defend yourself with. Make use of campus safety in uneasy situations. If you are questioning your safety, don’t wait. Make the call to campus safety. Report any suspicious behavior. Know that its job is to help protect you, the student. Take advantage of the fact that you have constant scared. Don’t be too naive and trusting of those around you. But at the same time, try to remind yourself that you need to take your life one day at a time and not let your fears get in the way of leading the normal life you wish to have. Member of KSC Republicans group on campus talks about what it means to be a Republican here at Keene State College. KATE CHARRON
Equinox Staff College Republicans, as an organization on campus, took part in the Student Involvement fair on September 10. Many students came up to our table and said things like, “Where has this group been?” “We’ve been looking for you” and “I’m so happy there is a Republican group on campus.” These people are interested in the political process, but they feel underrepresented on a campus where the political views are so insulated and painfully similar. When I started my internship at the New Hampshire Republican Party in Concord, N.H., I didn’t know what to expect. I’m not a political science major, but politics has always interested me. I wasn’t entirely sure I would make it in this environment. I tried to imagine who I would be working with, who I would be learning from and what they would be like. I pictured older men, who would probably be boring and quite intimidating. antly surprised that there weren’t any old men in sight; there were men and women, and the group was the epitome of diversity. They were all young, fun and welcoming. I’m going to take a guess that almost anyone would
have made a similar assumption. One would think of words like “old,” “white” and “rich” in Republican politics. These words might describe a generation of leaders and policy makers on both sides of the aisle, but we need to come to the realization as college students that we will be, and already are, creating a new generation of leadership. With another presidential election approaching fast, it’s of the utmost importance that people our age become more engaged. Of course, it’s always easier to know what Kendall and Kylie are up to this week, but what does that really do besides aimlessly amuse us? It never hurts to be political and understand the process through which the roads we drive on, the school we attend and even the values, be in the best interest of humanity, and set future generations up for success? As a 21-year-old, it’s easy to remain neutral and say that you’ll care about all that my time at the NHGOP. Issues that actually matter to me, like how much I’m paying for my education and where by the quality of policy makers that we, the voters, put
to be engaged. I want the power of this country to be placed in the hands of voters, not the hands of a bloated, over-reaching Washington. Essentially, I believe in “we the people,” not “we the government.” For our generation, entering the world after college is coming at a challenging point for our country. At many times it feels like we’re stuck and not making progress on issues that matter, and with all that our generation has on its hands from those who have come before us, like a national debt of about $19 trillion, it might be easy to believe that we’re stuck. The problem is that we need to dispel the stale, outdated notions that don’t work. No other generation has the ability to be so innovative in this new, incredibly fast and diverse world. I’m not saying you should stay in on a Thursday night and read up on all the reasons the Iranian Nuclear Deal is one of the worst negotiations of all-time (go to dollar drinks like a normal person), but what I’m saying is that our generation has some important decisions to make. It’s our turn to decide what we want the United States’ future to look like. I’m a Republican because I’m passionate about not settling for a watered-down, socialistic version of America. Our generation can do better. Kate Charron can be contacted at kcharron@kscequinox.com

Student attempts to understand social psychological phenomenon VERONICA REEDER
Equinox Staff Situation: You are at the mall. You see a man grab a child and begin to walk away with her. The child immediately begins to yell and cry, saying things like, "You're not my daddy. Let me go!" What would you do? Think about yourself. For most people this would appear to be a temper tantrum. Again, think about who you are and the morals you choose to stand by. What would you actually do? Would you walk by or would you do something? According to a survey done on Keene State College students, most say that they would do something, or intervene with the situation. An experiment conducted by the TODAY show would suggest otherwise. In the experiment, there was a staged child abduction in which a man was to try and abduct a child (both were knowingly involved). Over the course of three hours, the child abduction was staged repeatedly. Shockingly enough, no one intervened. People continued to walk by. Now think about the actions you made today. Did you see something possibly dangerous happening and just choose to walk on by? In the staged experiment most people walked right by. This psychological phenomenon is commonly
When studying topics we never thought about we are gifted with a new perspective. These are as learners, when it is not easy and when we are truly expanding our minds into new directions. I remember a few people asked me if I as a transfer student I did not push myself to try any clubs. I was concerned that I would be overwhelmed. Looking back I know I was just too nervous to take on learning a whole new hobby. Hosting a radio show seemed like a dream unattainable back in my high school days, but here the day-to-day opportunities we are presented with are ample. This is my third semester hosting Arline Live in Keene and I would not sacrithat I have chosen over the airwaves of Keene has become one of my most favorite pass times. It required some learning. It has taken practice and experience to become comfortable, but it is a new skill set that was once just a “what if? There are many opportunities to expand your interests within the classroom. For example, I took two semesters of singing lessons that counted for credits. I was able to explore a new hobby with one-on-one lessons as well as rack up more credits for my transcript. Being that Keene State is a you to explore a variety of interests while heightening your education in such subjects. Last spring I took an American Studies course on The Beatles and earned credit for delving deeper into a love of a legendary music group. The class are all familiar with through an analytical lens. The class taught me a lot more about band members Paul, John, George and Ringo, but what it really taught me is that there is always much more to understand than just what is at the surface. This whole production is grabbing them and pulling them away. Each student was given this scenario and asked to respond as honestly as possible. Most explained that they would have either watched to see what else happened or said that they would continue to walk by. Students declared that it would be hard to know what to do in those situations. For each answer though, only a few said that they would directly intervene with the situation. This is something that shocks a lot of people. The term "safety in numbers" is not a true statement. It is hard to go against the group
going to be part of your journey. During the early weeks of any semester the various studentrun organizations and clubs on campus are just starting back up from break. This is a perfect time and opportunity to go check out that club you were thinking of joining. Now, don’t get me wrong, it is rarely too late in the semester to join a club, so if you are late to start do not be discouraged. I am simply stating that the early weeks of the semester are likely to be the best for joining new groups because lots of other people will be joining at the same time. This is a great time to get acclimated, meet members of the group and start participating. School is meant to teach us both book smarts and life smarts. What I mean by this is that while you are in the classroom gaining knowledge about a subject, you should take away lessons that can enhance your own life experiences. College is great because we pick our courses and therefore we can study what we like. My belief is that when studying something we love it is likely to be something we are comfortable with and probably something we already understand to an extent. In order to open your mind in unexpected ways it is necessary to go beyond that comfort zone and take a class in a subject you have never studied or join a club for an activity you have never tried but always thought sounded cool. This is when we really learn. It is in the class that we are unfamil-

Equinox Staff For most young adults, the prospect of moving away from home to share a living space with a friend, or even a stranger, could be an experience to look forward to. Keene State College students spoke out on their roommate experiences. KSC roommates Kate Marinelli and Amy Buonpane said they knew they were meant to be best friends. “We locked eyes across the Quad one day, and knew it was destiny,” Marinelli joked. Surprisingly, the roommate/best friend duo has managed to make it work. Buonpane explained, “We work great as roommates because we respect each other’s living habits.” When asked, Buonpane and Marinelli had a hard time coming up with issues they have with each other. Marinelli agreed, “Amy and I just get along really well.” The pair of roommates explained that they acknowledge each other’s schedules and habits, and that respect is key to sharing a space with someone. “I like to nap and she is good with doing her work silently so I can sleep,” Marinelli said.

Johnny Depp captivates ‘Mass’ audiences MATT BILODEAU
Equinox Staff Once the powerful teaser trailer for “Black Mass” made its way online, I was tember to roll around. My main reason for this excitement being the “return” of Johnny Depp. I put “return” in parenthesis because Depp never left us per se, but it felt as if he was ditching Tim Burton and his goofy makeup to play a serious role again. It only took him two minutes to grab my attention and chill me to the core. trailer was selling? Boston in the late 70s, James “Whitey” Bulger [Johnny Depp] was a common household name. He ran the streets as the head of the Irish-American Winter Hill Gang with a chilling demeanor. As another group [Angiulo Brothers] looms on the horizon, FBI agent John Connolly [Joel Edgerton] takes this opportunity to get close with Whitey, and maybe gain his trust. Once an agreement is made, Whitey becomes a secret informant for the bureau in exchange for getting the Angiulos out of his territory. Boston, Whitey takes this opportunity to commit dirty deeds all over town, all while being protected by the FBI. The main selling point of the trailers was the transformation of Johnny Depp. Yes, he’s still wearing the heavy makeup, but he’s not making a fool out of himself. With the slicked back hair and soulsucking eyes, Depp disappears and becomes Whitey almost immediately. There are times when we ask ourselves how people can commit such heinous atrocities without even blinking an eye. “Black Mass” chillingly shows Bulger at his absolute worst and, as we’re watching, we ask that very question. Bulger is, quite simply, a monster, a vampire that lurks in the shadows as a foreboding menace. involving Whitey at a dinner party with a few close colleagues.

He asks one of his men about a secret family recipe that was used on his steak. Where this scene goes from there shows that the smallest little thing, like a recipe, activates a switch in Whitey’s head that turns him from humorous to intimidating. That said, while I’m okay with portraying him as a cold-blooded monster, I could have used more of a psychological analysis on why he does what he does. Depp is great in the role, but there was more to his character that could have been explored. To dive deep into the psyche of a powerhungry and deranged individual could have easily placed Whitey Bulger as one of the best screen gangsters to date.

Other than those two, everybody else is merely a means to an end. Certain characters will enter the movie, leave, then come back a half hour later to suddenly be relevant again. Carson blames 'PC culture' for Muslim comment flap DAN SEWELL & JULIE CARR-SMYTH
AssociAted Press CEDARVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson on Tuesday blamed "P.C. culture" for the political fallout over his statement against electing a Muslim president. Carson told reporters in Ohio that his view is that anyone wanting to be president must embrace the Constitution and American principles. He added that he would oppose a Christian for president who wanted to establish a theocracy. Asked how his campaign can recover from the controversy, the retired neurosurgeon replied: "The only way we fix that is fix the P.C. culture in our country," referring to political correctness. "We fix America, and we get people who actually start listening .... and stop trying to fit everything into a P.C. model," he said. Carson's remarks came amid a backlash over his comments last weekend that Muslims shouldn't serve in the presidency. In an interview with Fox News, Carson then retreated slightly, saying he would be open to a moderate Muslim who denounced radical Islam as a White House candidate. But he also said he stood by his original comments, saying the country cannot elect people "whose faith might interfere with carrying out the duties of the Constitution." The Constitution clearly states "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." On Tuesday in Ohio, Carson called the Muslim president question "a theoretical issue" that's distracting from important national and international problems, from U.S. income inequality to the Syrian refugee crisis. Carson's campaign estimated more than 2,000 supporters came to the Sharonville Convention Center, the first of his three appearances planned Tuesday in swing-state Ohio. Carson got strong cheers and applause for calling for action on the national debt and for strengthened border security to keep out "radical jihadists."

American trade delegation DAVID WARREN
AssociAted Press Phan Phan-Gillis was visiting China last spring as part of an American trade delegation that included the mayor pro tem of Houston and others who were promoting business opportunities in the nation's fourth-largest city. But after passing through security at a border checkpoint, the 55-year-old Texas businesswoman mysteriously disappeared from her group. On Tuesday, her husband disclosed that she's been detained by the Chinese government for the last six months on suspicion of spying and stealing state secrets. Now he's asking the president and the State Department to help win her release. Jeff Gillis denies the accusations against his wife, who has been accused by the Chinese Foreign Ministry with threatening China's national security. Although she has not been charged, she was formally arrested over the weekend and moved to a more secure detention facility in the southern city of Nanning, according to her husband, who said the arrest allows Chinese authorities to continue their espionage investigation. His wife has been visited six times by American consular officers since her March 20 arrest, according to the State Department, which said it was closely monitoring the case. "We've raised her case with Chinese government officials on multiple occasions at a very senior level," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Tuesday during a media briefing. The White House has also raised the matter with the Chinese foreign ministry and "not received what we believe to be an adequate response." Phan-Gillis, known as Sandy to family and friends, is a VietnameseAmerican of Chinese descent who has lived in Houston for about 30 years. Gillis, who until now has not publicly disclosed his wife's detention, decided to discuss her arrest with reporters because Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting the U.S. this week. Gillis said he hoped the timing of the publicity would pressure Beijing and Washington to act. "If nothing else, at least convey to the Chinese about the idiocy of arresting an American citizen on these politicized charges of spying
and stealing state secrets," he said. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the woman was healthy, but Gillis said his wife suffers from high blood pressure and other complications and has been hospitalized twice during her incarceration. Chinese law allows authorities to detain a suspect for up to six months during an investigation, Simon Tang, a lawyer for the Gillis family, told the Houston Chronicle. After that period, the government has a month to issue charges or present its case in court, although it can seek extensions. Tang did not return text and phone messages from The Associ-

Gonzalez said members of the delegation were surprised when Phan-Gillis did not meet them after the group passed through the checkpoint at Macau, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. She later contacted the delegation to say she was attending to a "personal matter." "It's just so bizarre," Gonzalez said. "There was nothing out of the ordinary for a business development trip." Acting Wilkinsburg School Board Superintendent Joseph Petrella, right, follows students and their parents after students were released from Wilkinsburg High School in Wilkinsburg, Pa., Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, because a student poured gasoline on a security guard. A spokesman for a Pennsylvania school district says the student attacked a security guard by pouring gasoline hidden inside a soda bottle on him. The spokesman says the student poured the fuel on the guard and the floor after 9 a.m. but didn't light it. The student is in police custody. The guard isn't believed to be seriously injured.

AssociAted Press A 16-year-old girl poured gasoline on two Pennsylvania high school security guards and unsuccessfully tried to ignite it using a grill lighter, police said Tuesday in announcing charges against the girl. Wilkinsburg student Imani Knight-Brantley was jailed, unable to post $100,000 bail, after being arraigned Tuesday and charged as an adult with aggravated assault, risking a catastrophe, reckless endangerment and bringing a weapon onto school property.

was being suspended and had to return Monday with her guardian. The girl screamed at him and threw an open milk carton, which hit him in the head, Murray told police. Knight-Brantley told police she threw the milk at Murray only after he slapped a food tray she was holding, and that he also put her in a headlock and threatened to bite her. She also told police that a friend overheard Murray using a crude term to describe her. The girl said "this angered her and she could not wait to see Murray on Monday," the criminal complaint said. The girl's grandmother told police that neither her granddaughter nor the school told her about the Friday confrontation. OSA Global, the New Castle company that contracts to provide the school guards, did not immediately return a call for comment. School spokesman Pete Camarda, who told reporters Monday that the girl hadn't attempted to light the gasoline, said Tuesday, "As the day unfolded, we found out more and more." Murray was working Tuesday but was unlikely to return to the school on Wednesday, Camarda said. "As we're looking into this, he may not be here tomorrow," Camarda said. "You have to take action while you're assessing what went on." The girl wouldn't tell police where she got the gasoline, but she acknowledged confronting Murray on Monday, then throwing gasoline onto him, hitting the

Online court records don't list an attorney for Knight-Brantley, who was interviewed by police while accompanied by her grandmother, the girl's legal guardian, according to the complaint. Although Knight-Brantley acknowledged pouring the gasoline on Murray — with some spilling on Pyle — she told police she had been provoked during a confrontation with Murray on Friday. Murray told police he escorted Knight-Brantley from school on Friday for using her cellphone, a rules violation. The school — one of the poorest in the Pittsburgh suburbs — has an after-school food program and the suspect returned at the end of the day to eat ing that afternoon, Murray told police. Murray told police the girl became upset when he the school and classes were canceled for the day as the again escorted her from school property, told her she smell of gas permeated the building.

when we lose, but it’s just interesting to see those reactions,” Sylvester said. Win or lose, junior and men’s basketball player Rodney Jean-Marie said that the fan support does not go unnoticed. “They play a huge role in big games where it comes down to the wire. They’re in it. They’re active. It is sort of motivation to be like ‘Let’s win this game for the fans. They’re supporting us. They’re rooting us on, let’s do this for them’,” Jean-Marie said. Jean-Marie also said that when he found the strong fan support to be rather unexpected “For me, I was really surprised, because I didn’t think that many people were fans of basketball. I didn’t think we had huge supporters like the ones here at Keene. It’s a great fanbase,” Jean-Marie said. Sylvester said that winning isn’t what being an Owl fan is all about; it is about sticking through tough times and showing support for the players that represent their school. “Hopefully people look at it as supporting the teams instead of just going because we’re good or something like that. Yes, that’s an awesome part of it, having a good team and winning, but it’s not just about that, it’s about showing your support for the players and what they do as well,” Sylvester said On September 26 Owl Nation will be present at the KSC meetings are Tuesday’s at 7:30 p.m. in the Young Student Center. Sheikh-Yusuf was certainly not alone when he came to Keene State. Many of his cross country teammates and friends are running by his side to make sure he runs away from the negatives, and sprints towards the positives as a student athlete. Senior on the KSC Cross Country team Mark Rabasco spoke highly of his new teammate. “[Sheikh]Yusuf is a quiet leader, he is able to get the job done and [is] extremely intellectual at team building and helping others surrounding him on the cross country team to do better,” Rabasco said. Rabasco continued to say, “He is our top freshman performer; [he] always puts in the most work day in and day out.” After numerous attempts to contact KSC Cross Country Coach Tom Pickering, he denied comment. Sheikh-Yusuf is majoring in business management here at KSC and said he hopes to one day own a successful business. Sheikh-Yusuf will still be running free as a cross country star as his biggest goal is to bring home a Division III championship and hoist it over the campus community. League, I can’t just ignore it. And when that quarterback is Tom Brady, I have to scream it from the mountaintops. I mean, is Tom kidding me with that performance? Every time I feel like it can’t get any better being a New England Patriots fan, Tom Brady has to go out and make me fall even deeper in love.
