History of the November Breeding Stock Sale
Keeneland Catalogs 3,958 Horses for 2012 November Sale
The November Breeding Stock Sale is the world’s premier sale of its kind, featuring broodmares and broodmare prospects, weanlings, horses of racing age and stallions. This year will mark Keeneland’s 69th annual November sale, which began in 1944. With the exception of the early years and dispersals, yearlings have not been sold in November.
Keeneland has cataloged 3,958 horses for its 2012 November Breeding Stock Sale, to be held November 6-16.
November Sale Graduates
“The November Sale is unmatched in terms of the selection of stakes-winning and stakes-producing fillies and mares in foal to the world’s leading sires, as well as foals by today’s most fashionable stallions,” said Walt Robertson, Vice President of Sales. “That international appeal sets it apart from any other sale of its kind in the world.”
A November Sale record for a broodmare or broodmare prospect was set in 2007 when Group 1 stakes winner Playful Act (IRE) sold for a then world-record $10.5 million. Recent November Sale alumni sold as weanlings include graded stakes winners To Honor and Serve (Woodward-G1 and Cigar Mile-G1); Lady of Shamrock (Del Mar Oaks-G1 and American Oaks-G1); Gemologist (Wood Memorial-G1); The Factor (Malibu-G1 and Pat O’Brien-G1); Next Question (Nearctic-G1); My Best Brother (Del Mar Derby-G2); City to City (John C. Mabee-G2 and Buena Vista-G2); Thunder Moccasin (Hutcheson-G2); Drill (San Vincente-G2); Guys Reward (Firecracker-G2); Pool Play (Hawthorne Gold Cup-G2); Mystical Star (New York-G2); Naples Bay (Noble Damsel-G3); Went the Day Well (Vinery Racing Spiral-G3); Stealcase (Ontario Derby-G3); Stars to Shine (Ontario Matron-G3); Derwin’s Star (Bed o’ Roses-G3); Cozzetti (American Derby-G3); Daddy Nose Best (El Camino Real Derby-G3); Bank of Burden (Stockholm Cup International-G3) and All Squared Away (Coolmore Lexington-G3). A complete list of stakes winners sold as weanlings in November (2007 – October 31, 2012) can be found on page 15 of this press kit.

Keeneland Sales Staff Walt Robertson | Vice President of Sales
formerly served on the board of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders.
Walt Robertson, a long-time leader in the equine auction industry, was named to the newly created position of Vice President of Sales in January 2011. Robertson, who joined Keeneland following 35 years at Fasig-Tipton, oversees and directs all functions of the Keeneland sales. In addition to his extensive work in the Thoroughbred industry, Robertson also has been active in the Central Kentucky community for many years. He has served as the Chairman of the Kentucky Horse Park Commission, is a former director and past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and is a past member of the Sayre School and The Lexington School boards of trustees. He continues to serve as President/Auctioneer for SwinebroadDenton, Inc., a full-service real estate auction company in Lexington.
Ryan Mahan | Senior Auctioneer Keeneland’s senior auctioneer, Ryan Mahan, considered following his stepfather, Dr. Robert Copelan, into veterinary medicine. Instead, he finds himself in the auction stand at the leading Thoroughbred sales in the world. Mahan initially had his own auction company but in 1977 he came to work at Keeneland as a bid spotter and later chief announcer for several years following the departure of Tom Hammond. Promoted to auctioneer in the mid ‘80s, he succeeded the late Tom Caldwell in 2001 as senior auctioneer. Mahan also serves on the inspection team for Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale.
Geoffrey G. Russell | Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell has served as Keeneland’s Director of Sales since June 2001. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Russell gained early experience at Coolmore Stud and as a bid spotter at Goffs. He came to the United States in 1982, first working at Fasig-Tipton Sales and then Elmendorf Farm. He returned to FasigTipton as Vice President of FasigTipton Appraisals and Director of Sales Administration prior to joining Keeneland in 1996 as Assistant Director of Sales to Rogers Beasley. Russell represents Keeneland on the Sales Integrity Task Force, International Catalogue Standards Committee (NA) (ICSC) and the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA), having served as the organization’s chairman in 2003 and 2004. He also sits on the board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation.
Mark Maronde | Sales Account Executive Mark Maronde brings more than 20 years of experience in the Thoroughbred industry to the Keeneland sales team, which he joined in April 2009. As account executive, he assists with recruiting and marketing efforts for the Keeneland sales and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Maronde spent five years in the bloodstock division of WinStar Farm prior to Keeneland. He honed his inspection and sales recruiting skills as National Field Representative for Barretts’ Equine Ltd. (1996 – 2009) and with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (2007- 2009). He also worked for Cromwell Bloodstock from 1990 – 1995.
Will Mayer | Sales Associate Will Mayer joined the Keeneland sales team in July 2011 following his graduation from the Darley Flying Start program. During that two-year course he worked at stud farms and racing stables in five countries and completed internships under some of the world’s top trainers, including Sydney’s leading metropolitan trainer Chris Waller. He interned with Keeneland in 2008–2009, and previously worked at Fares Farm. A native of Winchester, Mayer is a 2008 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Transylvania University, where he earned a B.A. in Finance and French.
Thomas J. Thornbury | Associate Director of Sales Tom Thornbury was named Keeneland’s Associate Director of Sales in June 2002. In his position, Thornbury acts as liaison to consignor interests, cultivates relationships with horsemen in emerging racing markets, and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Thornbury grew up on the farm owned by his father, John Thornbury, and his partner, Dr. Robert Copelan, where he was involved in training and farm management, and assisted in equine orthopedic surgery. Thornbury spent nearly 10 years at Airdrie Stud, owned by former Governor and Mrs. Brereton C. Jones, working first as yearling manager and later as general manager. Shadai Farm Location: Hokkaido, Japan Principal: Teruya “Terry” Yoshida Background: The Yoshida family’s Shadai Farm is one of the world’s most famous Thoroughbred operations. Shadai Stallion Station, home of such leading stallions as the late Northern Taste and Sunday Silence, is located on the island of Hokkaido in Japan. Principal Teruya “Terry” Yoshida’s grandfather, Zenuske Yoshida, was one of the first Japanese to import Thoroughbreds from the United States on a major scale. He died in 1946, leaving the family business to his son Zenya Yoshida (Terry’s father) and his two brothers. Zenya Yoshida founded Shadai in 1955. Zenya Yoshida had formerly owned a stud farm in the Tokyo region that the Japanese government purchased in 1958 as part of the land for Narita International Airport. Yoshida used the money to buy land on Hokkaido, the northern island that is now Japan’s principal center of Thoroughbred breeding, and developed Shadai Farm there. When Teruya Yoshida graduated in economics from Keoi University in 1969, his father sent him to Kentucky to manage Fontainebleau Farm, then the American branch of Shadai. He spent five years at Fontainebleau, during which time he spent $100,000 for Northern Taste, a son of Northern Dancer who won the 1974 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp and became the champion stallion in Japan for 11 consecutive years. Sunday Silence, winner of the 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) entered stud at Shadai in 1991 and became a perennial leading sire. He died in 2002 at the age of 16. Shadai Stallion Station currently stands about 27 stallions. They include 2002 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner War Emblem and champion Deep Impact. Shadai purchased Lucky One, carrying a full sibling to champion Blind Luck, for $1.85 million at the 2010 November Sale.
