Keeneland Sales Staff Walt Robertson Vice President of Sales

Walt Robertson, a longtime leader in the equine auction industry, was named to the newly created position of Vice President of Sales in January 2011. Robertson joined Keeneland following 35 years at Fasig-Tipton. He oversees and directs all functions of the Keeneland sales. In addition to his vast work in the Thoroughbred industry, Robertson also has been active in the Central Kentucky community for many years. He has served as the Chairman of the Kentucky Horse Park Commission, is a former director and past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and is a past member of the Sayre School and The Lexington School boards of trustees. He also continues to serve as President/Auctioneer for Swinebroad-Denton, Inc., a full-service real estate auction company in Lexington.

Geoffrey G. Russell Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell has served as Keeneland’s Director of Sales since June 2001. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Russell gained early experience at Coolmore Stud and as a bid spotter at Goffs. He came to the United States in 1982, first working at Fasig– Tipton Sales and then Elmendorf Farm. He returned to Fasig–Tipton as Vice President of Fasig–Tipton Appraisals and Director of Sales Administration prior to joining Keeneland in 1996 as Assistant Director of Sales to Rogers Beasley. Russell represents Keeneland on the Sales Integrity Task Force, International Catalogue Standards Committee (NA) (ICSC) and the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA), having served as the organization’s chairman in 2003 and 2004. He also sits on the board of the Grayson–Jockey Club Foundation.

Thomas J. Thornbury, Associate Director of Sales Tom Thornbury was named Keeneland’s Associate Director of Sales in June 2002. In his position, Thornbury acts as liai-

son to consignor interests, cultivates relationships with horsemen in emerging racing markets, and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Thornbury grew up on the farm owned by his father, John Thornbury, and his partner, Dr. Robert Copelan, where he was involved in training and farm management, and assisted in equine orthopedic surgery. Thornbury spent nearly 10 years at Airdrie Stud, owned by former Governor and Mrs. Brereton C. Jones, working first as yearling manager and later as general manager. He is a past–president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers Club, and formerly served on the board of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders. Thornbury and his wife, Barbara, have two children.

Ryan Mahan Senior Auctioneer Keeneland’s senior auctioneer, Ryan Mahan, considered following his stepfather, Dr. Robert Copelan, into veterinary medicine. Instead, he finds himself in the auction stand at the leading Thoroughbred sales in the world. Mahan initially had his own auction company but in 1977 he came to work at Keeneland as a bid spotter and later chief announcer for several years following the departure of Tom Hammond. Promoted to auctioneer in the mid ‘80s, he succeeded the late Tom Caldwell in 2001 as senior auctioneer. Mahan also serves on the inspection team for Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale.

Mark Maronde Sales Account Executive Mark Maronde brings more than 20 years of experience in the Thoroughbred industry to the Keeneland sales team, which he joined in April 2009. As account executive, he assists with recruiting and marketing efforts for the Keeneland sales 4

and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Maronde spent five years in the bloodstock division of WinStar Farm prior to Keeneland. He honed his inspection and sales recruiting skills as National Field Representative for Barretts’ Equine Ltd. (1996 – 2009) and with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (2007– 2009). He also worked for Cromwell Bloodstock from 1990 – 1995.

Will Mayer Sales Associate Will Mayer joined the Keeneland sales team in July 2011 following his grad– uation from the Darley Flying Start program. During that two–year course he worked at stud farms and racing stables in five countries and completed internships under some of the world’s top trainers, including Sydney’s leading metropolitan trainer Chris Waller. He interned with Keeneland in 2008–2009, and previously worked at Fares Farm. A native of Winchester, Mayer is a 2008 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Transylvania University, where he earned a B.A. in Finance and French.

Julie Cauthen Director of Owner and Client Development Julie Cauthen recently joined Keeneland as Director of Owner and Client Development, tasked with expanding Keeneland’s efforts domestically to draw new owners to the Thoroughbred industry and managing relationships with existing Keeneland clients. She previously served as Chief Operating Officer of Donegal Racing where she managed the day-to-day operations of the racing syndicate, including selection of horses and management of their training, and acted as a liaison with clients. Cauthen is a fourth-generation horseman, growing up in Midway, KY, near her grandparent’s Nuckols Farm. She is married to fellow horseperson Kerry Cauthen and they have two children, Thomas and Julia.

Background: Niall Brennan has been involved with Thoroughbreds his entire life. At age 16, he won his first race on his way to a successful career as a jockey in Ireland. He later switched his focus to a training career and traveled around the world expanding his knowledge of the industry. He worked at tracks and farms in New Zealand, Australia, California, and Kentucky before settling in 1987 to train for George Steinbrenner at Kinsman Farm in Florida. Brennan debuted his first two-year-old sales consignment in 1991 and has since become one of the most prominent juvenile consignors in North America. In 1999, he was noted as the leading juvenile consignor with gross sales of $8,483,500. Brennan’s program has produced four champions - Meadow Star, Term Limits (Canada), KissANative (Canada), and Kurofune (Japan) – and more than 16 Grade 1 winners. Prominent April Sale Graduates: Grade 1 winners Golden Ticket, Love and Pride, Carson Hollow, Fabulous Fast, Panty Raid, and Twice the Vice; Grade 2 winners Bowman’s Band, Roshani, Supremo, and Star of Manila; Grade 3 winners Summer Front, Ijigen, Diggins, Drum Major, Elusive Bluff, In Contention, Noonmark, Pleasant Temper, and Snowdrops (GB).

Background: Ciaran Dunne, a native of Kildare, Ireland, grew up on the grounds of the Irish National Stud where his father was the master gardener. Right out of high school, solely due to his father’s position, Ciaran enrolled in the Stud Management Course at Irish Stud. After graduation, he worked in English stables but soon headed to Kentucky to find a job and raise money to go to Australia. In 1987, Steve Johnson gave him an opportunity to work at Margaux Stud and Dunne has been in the U.S. ever since. That position led to jobs at the racetrack and at Glenwood Farm where he met his wife, Amy. Amy, a graduate of the University of Louisville’s Equine Program, worked as an exercise rider at Glenwood Farm when she met Ciaran. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Amy was making her own way in the industry by working as a stud groom at Three Chimneys and for bloodstock agent Mike Ryan. In 1994, the couple moved to Ocala and started their own training program a year later. In 2002, they purchased their own farm and continue their primary focus of pinhooking and starting young horses. Since then, they have become one of the top juvenile consignors in North America. In 2009, Wavertree Stables was the second-leading juvenile consignor overall, selling 59 horses for $7,846,500. Prominent April Sale Graduates: Grade 3 winners What a Name (IRE), Grab Your Heart, Gone Fishin, and Stream Cat; and stakes winners Karama and My Heavenly Sign.

In 2009, he ranked as the leading juvenile consignor with gross sales of $8,061,500. He has prepped and sold three champions – Big Brown, Left Bank and Midnight Lute.
