Welcome to the 2014 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale
F
125 horses cataloged to the 22nd annual auction
irst held in 1993, Keeneland’s April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale has produced more classic winners than any other 2-year-old sale, the most recent being 2013 Belmont (G1) winner Palace Malice.
“The April Sale gives buyers the opportunity to select quality, ready-made horses,” said Keeneland Vice President of Sales Walt Robertson. “This sale has a proven record of producing top performers, with graduates including recent classic winners Palace Malice and Big Brown and classic winner and champion Lookin At Lucky.” Keeneland has cataloged 125 juveniles for this year’s April Sale, which will be held Monday, April 7, at 4 p.m. (ET).
A Preview Show is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, beginning at 10:30 a.m. On March 8, Palace Malice made his 2014 debut in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) and won by a head over another April Sale graduate, Grade 1 winner Golden Ticket, to improve his career record to four wins in 13 starts and earnings of $1,631,135. Other April Sale graduates in 2014 include stakes winners Euphrosyne (Honeybee-G3), Summer Front (Ft. Lauderdale- G2), Vinceremos (Sam F. Davis- G3) and Warm Breeze (Happy Ticket). Another is Normandy Invasion, who won his Feb. 22 return to competition at Gulfstream and is expected to be a factor in this year’s handicap 3
division. Successful April Sale alumni in 2013 include Bashart (With Anticipation- G2), Cigar Street (Skip Away-G3), Summer Front (Miami Mile-G3 and Cliff Hanger-G3), What a Name (IRE) (Prix Impudence-G3) and Winning Cause (Coolmore Lexington-G3). The 2014 April Sale has cataloged 76 colts and 49 fillies that represent 54 stallions. Among the freshmen sires with progeny in the sale are Blame, Eskendereya, Lookin At Lucky and Quality Road. Leading sires who are represented include Galileo (IRE), Giant’s Causeway, Harlan’s Holiday, Indian Charlie, Kitten’s Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, Pioneerof the Nile, Smart Strike, Speightstown, Tapit, Tiznow, Unbridled’s Song and War Front.
Keeneland Sales Staff Walt Robertson | Vice President of Sales
Julie Cauthen | Director of Owner and Client Development
Walt Robertson, a longtime leader in the equine auction industry, was named to the newly created position of Vice President of Sales in January 2011. Robertson, who joined Keeneland following 35 years at Fasig-Tipton, oversees and directs all functions of the Keeneland sales. In addition to his extensive work in the Thoroughbred industry, Robertson has been active in the Central Kentucky community for many years. He has served as the chairman of the Kentucky Horse Park Commission, is a former director and past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and is a past member of the Sayre School and The Lexington School boards of trustees. He continues to serve as president/auctioneer for SwinebroadDenton, Inc., a full-service real estate auction company in Lexington.
Julie Cauthen is tasked with expanding Keeneland’s efforts domestically to draw new owners to the Thoroughbred industry and managing relationships with existing Keeneland clients. Before joining Keeneland in April 2013, Cauthen was chief operating officer of Donegal Racing. She selected horses and managed their training, and was a liaison with clients of the racing syndicate. Donegal’s standouts include 2012 Toyota Blue Grass (G1) winner Dullahan. Cauthen, who grew up in Midway, Ky., represents the fourth generation of her family involved in the Thoroughbred industry. Her grandfather was longtime Keeneland Trustee Charles Nuckols III. Her husband, Kerry Cauthen, also is involved in the industry.
Geoffrey G. Russell | Director of Sales
Ryan Mahan | Senior Auctioneer
Geoffrey Russell has served as Keeneland’s Director of Sales since June 2001. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Russell gained early experience at Coolmore Stud and as a bid spotter at Goffs. He came to the U.S. in 1982, first working at Fasig-Tipton and then Elmendorf Farm. He returned to Fasig-Tipton as vice president of Fasig-Tipton Appraisals and director of sales administration prior to joining Keeneland in 1996 as Assistant Director of Sales to Rogers Beasley. Russell represents Keeneland on the Sales Integrity Task Force, International Catalogue Standards Committee (NA) (ICSC) and the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA), having served as the organization’s chairman in 2003 and 2004. He also sits on the board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.
Keeneland’s senior auctioneer, Ryan Mahan, considered following his stepfather, Dr. Robert Copelan, into veterinary medicine. Instead, he finds himself in the auction stand at the leading Thoroughbred sales in the world. Mahan initially had his own auction company, but in 1977 he came to work at Keeneland as a bid spotter and later chief announcer for several years following the departure of Tom Hammond. Promoted to auctioneer in the mid-1980s, he succeeded the late Tom Caldwell in 2001 as senior auctioneer. Mahan also serves on the yearling inspection team.
Mark Maronde | Sales Account Executive
Mark Maronde brings more than 20 years of experience in the Thoroughbred industry to the Keeneland sales team, which he joined in April 2009. As account executive, he assists with recruiting and marketing efforts for Keeneland sales and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Maronde spent five years in the bloodstock division of WinStar Farm prior to Keeneland. He honed his inspection and sales recruiting skills as national field representative for Barretts’ Equine Ltd. (1996-2009) and with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (2007-2009). He also worked for Cromwell Bloodstock from 1990-1995.
Thomas J. Thornbury | Associate Director of Sales
Tom Thornbury was named Keeneland’s Associate Director of Sales in June 2002. In his position, Thornbury acts as liaison to consignor interests, cultivates relationships with horsemen in emerging racing markets, and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Thornbury grew up on the farm owned by his father, John Thornbury, and his partner, Dr. Robert Copelan, where he was involved in training and farm management, and assisted in equine orthopedic surgery. Thornbury spent nearly 10 years at Airdrie Stud, owned by former Kentucky Gov. and Mrs. Brereton C. Jones, working first as yearling manager and later as general manager. He is a past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ Club, and formerly served on the board of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders.
Will Mayer | Sales Associate
Will Mayer joined the Keeneland sales team in July 2011 following his graduation from the Darley Flying Start program. During that twoyear course, he worked at stud farms and racing stables in five countries and completed internships under some of the world’s top trainers, including Sydney’s leading metropolitan trainer Chris Waller. He interned with Keeneland in 2008-2009, and previously worked at Fares Farm. A native of Winchester, Ky., Mayer is a 2008 magna cum laude graduate of Transylvania University, where he earned a B.A. in finance and French. 4
