Wireless improvements
Over the summer, Keeneland made improvements to the Internet access in the barn area and replaced the entire wireless network. The wireless extends to all open areas between barns (show areas), the show ring near the Sales Pavilion and the Sales Pavilion. Please look for the “Keeneland Guest” Wi-Fi network on your mobile device. This network is complementary and open to the public (does not require a password). If you have any issues, please let us know.

Users also have the freedom to update their contact information.

Vast stallion representation
Keeneland.com also features searchable catalogs and results for sales dating back to 1999 as well as sortable lists of stakes-winning Keeneland sales graduates available by year from 2010 to present.
This year, 4,181 yearlings were cataloged to the September Sale; 2,215 are colts, 1,962 are fillies and four are geldings. Yearlings represent 246 of the world’s elite stallions, headlined by Arch, Awesome Again, Bernardini, Blame, Danehill Dancer (IRE), Dansili (GB), Distorted Humor, Dubawi (IRE), Empire Maker, Eskendereya, Fastnet Rock (AUS), Galileo (IRE), Giant’s Causeway, Hard Spun, Harlan’s Holiday, High Chaparral (IRE), Kitten’s Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Lonhro (AUS), Lookin At Lucky, Lucky Pulpit, Malibu Moon, Mastercraftsman (IRE), Medaglia d’Oro, Montjeu (IRE), More Than Ready, Oasis Dream (GB), Pioneerof the Nile, Pulpit, Quality Road, Rip Van Winkle (IRE), Roderic O’Connor (IRE), Scat Daddy, Sea The Stars (IRE), Smart Strike, Speightstown, Street Cry (IRE), Street Sense, Super Saver, Tale of the Cat, Tapit, Tiznow, Unbridled’s Song, War Front and Warrior’s Reward.
Keeneland’s industry commitment The September Sale is the most important event of the year at Keeneland, which holds four sales every year and offers world-class racing in April and October. The sales division is the engine that drives Keeneland. Revenue from sales fuels race meet purses, which are among the richest in North America. Concurrently, many of the stakes winners at Keeneland are graduates of our auction ring. Because of the synergy between its racing and sales operations, Keeneland plays a unique role in the Thoroughbred industry. Keeneland is structured as a private, for-profit corporation with a not-for-profit mission, and reinvests its earnings in the Thoroughbred industry.
Also cataloged are yearlings by such freshman stallions as Archarcharch, Cape Blanco (IRE), Desert Party, Drosselmeyer, Gio Ponti, Girolamo, Haynesfield, Munnings, Paddy O’Prado, Sidney’s Candy, Tizway, Trappe Shot, Twirling Candy, Uncle Mo and Wilburn.
Additionally, sales revenue pays for the operation of Keeneland’s racing and sales facilities; enables Keeneland to make charitable contributions that benefit the Thoroughbred industry and the Central Kentucky community (since 1936, these contributions have exceeded $18 million); and allows Keeneland to pursue innovative safety and welfare initiatives for people and horses and to fund equine research that benefits all breeds and disciplines.
Keeneland enhances technology service, online tools for sales clients Keeneland continues to expand its technology service and improve its online sales tools for the convenience of its clients. Keeneland has hardwired the tack room of each barn in the main stable area to provide consistent Internet access for consignors and buyers. Meanwhile, Keeneland.com hosts userfriendly tools designed to streamline the sales process for clients.
Several notable developments at Keeneland occurred during the summer of 2014: • Conversion of the 1 1/16-mile main track from a Polytrack surface to dirt. Horses began training over the new track in late August. • Announcement that Keeneland will hold the 2015 Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Oct. 30-31. This will mark the first time the season-ending championship event has been held at the track. • Announcement that the purse of the 2014 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) has been increased from $750,000 to $1 million, creating the first million-dollar race in Keeneland history. The race will be run Saturday, Oct. 4, during the second day of Fall Stars Weekend.
The redesigned Keeneland Portfolio (keeneland.com/ sales/Keeneland-portfolio) maximizes valuable information about horses cataloged and sold at Keeneland sales. This tool provides a number of new and enhanced features which allow clients to create a sortable “short list” of horses; enter evaluation notes including a grade and free-form comments for each horse; and establish text or email alerts on its status, i.e., pedigree updates, when the horse is in the ring, its hammer price and if it has been withdrawn. Clients may also research a horse’s Keeneland sales history back to the 1999 July Selected Yearling Sale. 4

Mahan initially had his own auction company but in 1977 he came to work at Keeneland as a bid spotter and later chief announcer for several years following the departure of Tom Hammond. Promoted to auctioneer in the mid ’80s, he succeeded the late Tom Caldwell in 2001 as senior auctioneer. Mahan also serves on the inspection team for Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale.
Geoffrey G. Russell | Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell has served as Keeneland’s Director of Sales since June 2001. He returned to Fasig-Tipton as Vice President of FasigTipton Appraisals and Director of Sales Administration prior to joining Keeneland in 1996 as Assistant Director of Sales to Rogers Beasley. Russell represents Keeneland on the Sales Integrity Task Force, International Catalogue Standards Committee (NA) (ICSC) and the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA), having served as the organization’s chairman in 2003 and 2004. He also sits on the board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation.

Maronde spent five years in the bloodstock division of WinStar Farm prior to Keeneland. He honed his inspection and sales recruiting skills as National Field Representative for Barretts’ Equine Ltd. (1996–2009) and with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (2007–2009). He also worked for Cromwell Bloodstock from 1990–1995.
Thomas J. Thornbury | Associate Director of Sales
Will Mayer | Sales Account Executive
Tom Thornbury was named Keeneland’s Associate Director of Sales in June 2002. In his position, Thornbury acts as liaison to consignor interests, cultivates relationships with horsemen in emerging racing markets, and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Thornbury grew up on the farm owned by his father, John Thornbury, and his partner, Dr. Robert Copelan, where he was involved in training and farm management, and assisted in equine orthopedic surgery. Thornbury spent nearly 10 years at Airdrie Stud, owned by former Governor and Mrs. Brereton C. Jones, working first as yearling manager and later as general manager. He is a past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America
Will Mayer joined the Keeneland sales team in July 2011 following his graduation from the Darley Flying Start program. During that two-year course he worked at stud farms and racing stables in five countries and completed internships under some of the world’s top trainers, including Sydney’s leading metropolitan trainer Chris Waller. He interned with Keeneland in 2008–2009, and previously worked at Fares Farm. September Yearling Sale 71st Annual
The Keeneland September Yearling Sale has evolved from humble beginnings to become the global marketplace for Thoroughbred yearlings.
In 2013, M.V. Magnier of Irish-based Coolmore Stud paid the sale-topping price of $2.5 million for a colt by War Front during the sale’s fourth session. Woods Edge Farm consigned the colt, who is out of the stakes-placed During mare Blading Gold Ring.
Price
From 1944, the inaugural year, through 1948, the fall yearlings were sold in an auction which included broodmares, weanlings, stallions, and horses of other ages. In 1949, approximately half of the yearlings were sold in a separate October sale and the remainder in a November mixed stock sale as usual. In 1950, the yearlings were sold separately by session, but in the same week as the other stock. In 1951, the fall yearling sales were set farther apart from the fall mixed stock sale, with the yearling auctions preceding the other sale by a week or more. In 1960, the yearling sales were moved to the month of September. In 1981, the yearling sale was held in two four-day segments. Selected sessions were inaugurated in 1989.

Among them are successful young sire War Front, whose sire, Danzig, stood at Claiborne; champion Blame; and 2013 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb.
Background: Craig Bandoroff was a jockey in New Jersey in the early 1970s until a spill at Garden State Park in 1974 left him without the use of Craig Bandoroff his right arm, forcing him to explore other career paths within the industry. He and wife Holly each gained experience working in various bloodstock and sales capacities, and in 1990 they opened Denali Stud. “Denali” is derived from the name given by the Eskimos to Mt. McKinley and means “the great one.”
In 2014, Claiborne became the sponsor of Keeneland’s $500,000 Breeders’ Futurity (G1), which will be run for the 101st time on Oct. 4 during Fall Stars Weekend. The stakes for 2-year-olds is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race, awarding the winner a berth to the $2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
