Denali Stud

Eaton Sales

Background: The Hancock family’s Claiborne Farm, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010, is a world-famous Thoroughbred breeding and racing operation. Claiborne won Eclipse Awards as outstanding breeder in 1979 and 1984, and received the 2010 Eclipse Award of Merit for outstanding achievement in the Thoroughbred industry.

Background: During Keeneland’s 2014 November Breeding Stock Sale, Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud sold 72 horses for a grand total of $4,706,400. At $700,000, Denali’s high seller was My Wandy’s Girl, a champion in Puerto Rico sold to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings.

Background: Eaton Sales Inc. is owned by Reiley McDonald, who purchased the sales agency from its founder, the late Lee Eaton, in the 1990s.

President: Walker Hancock Location: Paris, Ky. Website: claibornefarm.com

Walker Hancock represents the fourth generation of the family to serve as farm president. His father, Seth, took over running the farm in 1972 following the death of his father, A.B. “Bull” Hancock Jr. Seth’s Walker Hancock sister Dell also has taken an active role in the farm, racing stable and sales consignments. Claiborne is famous for being the home of Secretariat. The 1973 Triple Crown winner is buried at the farm as are some of the most influential Thoroughbreds of all time. Each year, Claiborne welcomes thousands of fans to visit Secretariat’s grave, as well as see its 12 stallions. Among them are outstanding young sire War Front, whose sire, Danzig, stood at Claiborne; champion and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Blame; and 2013 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb. In 2014, Claiborne became the sponsor of Keeneland’s $500,000 Breeders’ Futurity (G1), which was run for the 102nd time on Oct. 3 during Fall Stars Weekend. The 1 1/16-mile stakes for 2-year-olds was a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race, awarding the 2015 winner a berth to the $2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Oct. 31 at Keeneland. Claiborne has been a longtime consignor to Keeneland Sales. At last year’s November Sale, it sold 21 horses for $6,616,500. They were led by the Giant’s Causeway mare Naples Bay, a half-sister to leading sire Medaglia d’Oro, sold in foal to War Front and purchased for $3.6 million by M.V. Magnier. At the November Sale in 2013, Claiborne, agent, sold the sale-topping weanling, a colt by War Front, to Aisling Duignan for $800,000.

Owners: Craig and Holly Bandoroff Location: Paris, Ky. Website: denalistud.com

Craig Bandoroff was a jockey in New Jersey in the early 1970s until a spill at Garden State Park in 1974 left him without the use of his right arm, forcing him to explore other career paths within the indusCraig Bandoroff try. The Bandoroffs each gained experience working in various bloodstock and sales capacities, and in 1990 they opened Denali Stud. “Denali” is derived from the name given by the Eskimos to Mt. McKinley and means “the great one.” Today, Denali Stud covers 700 acres. In the late 1990s, Bob Lewis and his wife, Beverly, sent their champion racemare Serena’s Song to Denali when she was retired. Denali has sold several of Serena Song’s offspring, including Group 1 winner Sophisticat, by Storm Cat, for $3.4 million at the 2000 Keeneland July Selected Yearling Sale; Grade 2 winner Harlington, by Unbridled, for $2.8 million at the 2003 Keeneland September Yearling Sale; and Colourful Score, a colt by Storm Cat, for $3.5 million, at the 2005 September Sale. Among Denali’s achievements at Keeneland sales are two milestones from the November Sale. In 1998, Denali recorded its first seven-figure sale when it sold the Seattle Slew mare Calendar Lady, in foal to Mr. Prospector, for $1.1 million to Reynolds Bell Jr., agent. In 2008, Denali Stud, agent, sold future champion Uncle Mo as a weanling to Moon Bloodstock for $160,000. The Bandoroffs’ son, Conrad, is among the 12 people from seven countries selected for the 2015-2017 class of the Darley Flying Start program.

Reiley McDonald

A Maryland native, McDonald holds a degree in Animal Sciences from Cornell University. He worked at various Maryland race tracks as an exercise rider and assistant trainer. McDonald was an officer of FasigTipton Co. Inc. prior to buying Eaton Sales.

Eaton Sales served as agent for the dispersal of the W.T. Young family’s Overbrook Farm, which in 2009-2010 sold 205 horses for $38,606,000. At the time, the dispersal was the second largest in Keeneland sales history. It is now third behind the Edward P. Evans Spring Hill Farm dispersal, which sold 221 horses for $62,364,000 in 2011-2012, and the Nelson Bunker Hunt dispersal, which sold 580 horses for $46,912,800 in 1988. In 2004, Eaton Sales, agent, purchased fourtime Keeneland graded stakes winner Take Charge Lady, who was in foal to Seeking the Gold, for $4.2 million at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. From Take Charge Lady, Eaton bred Grade 1 winner Take Charge Indy, a colt by A.P. Indy colt, and 2013 champion 3-year-old male Will Take Charge, a colt by Unbridled’s Song. Successful horses Eaton Sales, agent, has sold as weanlings at the November Sale include two future Breeders’ Cup winners: 2014 Juvenile Turf (G1) winner Hootenanny, purchased in 2012 by Winding Oaks Farm for $120,000 in 2012; and 2008 Filly and Mare Turf (G1) winner Forever Together, sold in 2004 to Alistair Roden Bloodstock for $30,000. Eaton sold 2015 Grade 1 winner Cavorting as a weanling at the 2012 November Sale. At the 2014 November Sale, Eaton sold 54 horses for $9,303,000. Its high seller, at $1.8 million, was Precious Stone (IRE), a daughter of Galileo in foal to War Front. She was sold to Don Alberto Corp.

John Sikura

Following the death of his father in 1994, Sikura began to build the Kentucky farm into a prominent breeding and sales operation. Hill ‘n’ Dale encompasses 1,300 acres and stands 12 stallions, including Midnight Lute and Stormy Atlantic. In 2016, Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Bayern will enter stud at the farm, the final resting place of 1977 Triple Crown winner and leading sire Seattle Slew. At the 2007 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent for Swettenham Stud, sold the highest-priced horse in the sale’s history – Playful Act (IRE) – for $10.5 million. The amount is the thirdhighest price ever paid for a horse at any Keeneland sale. Hill ‘n’ Dale sold a weanling Tapit filly for a North American record $3 million at last year’s November Sale. Bridlewood Farm bought the filly, whose third dam is Racing Hall of Famer Serena’s Song. For the 2014 November Sale, Hill ‘n’ Dale sold 73 horses for a grand sum of $18,994,000 to rank second among consignors.

Antony Beck

Gainesway includes two historic operations, Greentree Stud and the C.V. Whitney farm. Beck and his wife, Angela, have nurtured Gainesway into a facility known for more than Thoroughbreds. An emphasis on trees and spectacular gardens helped the farm earn official status as an arboretum from the American Public Garden Association.
