Key sale attracts major international and domestic buyers
he 72nd Keeneland September Yearling Sale on Sept. 14-26 kicks off a momentous two months at Keeneland that will showcase the world’s best Thoroughbred sales and racing and focus attention on the Thoroughbred industry in Central Kentucky. In October, Keeneland will present racing during the 17-day Fall Meet from Oct. 2-24, Prelude to the Cup on Oct. 29 and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Oct. 30-31. Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale follows on Nov. 2-14.

Keeneland is the world’s leading Thoroughbred auction house, selling more champions and stakes winners than any other sales company. This summer, Keeneland sales graduates showcased their talents at the highest levels of racing, winning more than half of the combined 56 graded stakes during the Saratoga and Del Mar meets. Keeneland sales alumni accounted for 13 of the 22 Grade 1 stakes, winning eight of the 15 at Saratoga and five of the seven at Del Mar. Highlighting the outstanding performances this summer were four graduates of the September Sale. At Saratoga, the gritty Keen Ice captured the Travers (G1), and Liam’s Map scored an easy gate-to-wire win in the Woodward (G1). At Del Mar, champion Beholder followed her win in the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) with a history-making romp over males in the TVG Pacific Classic (G1), and Nyquist won the closingday Del Mar Futurity (G1).
Curalina (Acorn Coaching Club American Oaks) Dame Dorothy (Humana Distaff) Embellish the Lace (Alabama) Gabriel Charles (Eddie Read) Include Betty (Mother Goose) Jack Milton (Maker’s 46 Mile) Keen Ice (Travers) Lady Eli (Belmont Oaks Invitational) Liam’s Map (Woodward) Materiality (Besilu Stables Florida Derby) Molly Morgan (La Troienne) Mshawish (Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap) Nyquist (Del Mar Futurity) Private Zone (Priority One Jets Forego) Ring Weekend (Frank E. Kilroe Mile) Runhappy (NYRA.com King’s Bishop) Secret Circle (Dubai Golden Shaheen Sponsored by Gulf News) Sharla Rae (Del Mar Oaks) Undrafted (Diamond Jubilee).
The September Sale is globally regarded as the primary barometer of the health of the Thoroughbred industry and attracts the world’s major foreign and domestic buyers, top trainers and bloodstock advisers, and prominent juvenile sales consignors. For 2015, 4,164 yearlings in the catalog represent the world’s elite stallions and include five horses from the first crop of undefeated European champion Frankel (GB).
As of Sept. 9, September Sale graduates had won 119 graded/group stakes in the U.S. and abroad. Among the 25 Grade/Group 1 stakes winners are: • Air Force Blue (Keeneland Phoenix) • Beholder (TVG Pacific Classic and Clement L. Hirsch) • Carpe Diem (Toyota Blue Grass Stakes)
This year, Keeneland is the only U.S.-based sales company to offer offspring by Frankel, who stands in England. “We are delighted to have yearlings by Frankel in the September Sale,” Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell 3
Keeneland adjusts format of opening week
said. “The presence of his yearlings and those by other highly prized international sires reflects the fact that U.S. breeders have traveled overseas to buy mares in foal to these stallions or breed mares to these stallions with the intent of selling the resulting offspring at Keeneland.”
The September Sale will open with a three-day Book 1, spanning Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 14-16, one day less than previously. The sale’s traditional “dark day,” when no sales are conducted, has been moved from Friday of opening week to Thursday, Sept. 17. The Book 2 sale will be conducted Friday-Saturday, Sept. 18-19, followed by Books 3-6 beginning Sunday, Sept. 20.
Other prominent foreign-based stallions with yearlings cataloged in September are Dansili (GB), Nathaniel (IRE), Pivotal (GB), Royal Applause (GB) and Sepoy (AUS) from England; Myboycharlie (IRE) and Redoute’s Choice (AUS) from France; and, from Ireland, Dream Ahead, Excelebration (IRE), Fastnet Rock (AUS), Galileo (IRE), High Chaparral (IRE), Invincible Spirit (IRE), Lawman (FR), Lope de Vega (IRE), Mastercraftsman (IRE), Power (GB), Raven’s Pass, So You Think (NZ) and Teofilo (IRE).
“Offering the highest-quality catalogs and conveniences to our clients is Keeneland’s No. 1 goal, and these tweaks will further streamline the sales process and enhance momentum for the whole sale,” Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason said. “We’ve listened to our consignors and buyers, who prefer a tighter Book 1, offering more horses each day over fewer days and starting earlier,” Russell said. “They also want a more immediate, smoother transition to Book 2 horses. This change affords buyers the opportunity to inspect a greater number of horses during Week 1.”
Established North American sires with yearlings cataloged for the sale are Arch, Awesome Again, Bernardini, Blame, Candy Ride (ARG), City Zip, Congrats, Curlin, Distorted Humor, Elusive Quality, Exchange Rate, Flatter, Ghostzapper, Giant’s Causeway, Hard Spun, Harlan’s Holiday, Kitten’s Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, More Than Ready, Pioneerof the Nile, Quality Road, Scat Daddy, Smart Strike, Speightstown, Street Cry (IRE), Tapit, Tiznow, Unbridled’s Song, Uncle Mo and War Front.
Book 2 horses now will be available for buyer inspection beginning Wednesday, Sept. 16. In previous years, which featured a four-day Book 1 and a break on Friday, Week 1 buyers were exposed only to Book 2 horses through Sunday. A three-day Book 1 offers Week 1 buyers the ability to inspect Book 1, Book 2 and some Book 3 horses.
Notable freshman sires with yearlings in the catalog include Algorithms, Astrology, Biondetti, Bodemeister, Creative Cause, Dialed In, Dominus, Excelebration (IRE), Frankel (GB), Gemologist, Jersey Town, Maclean’s Music, Mission Impazible, Nathaniel (IRE), Power (GB), Sepoy (AUS), Shackleford, Tapizar, The Factor, To Honor and Serve and Union Rags.
The stabling format returns to a traditional barn rotation, with Book 1 horses in Barns 1-24 and Book 2 horses in Barns 25-49.
Market Stability is Recent Trend
Of the total yearlings cataloged, 2,168 are colts, 1,995 are fillies and one is a gelding.
Results of the 2014 September Sale were nearly equal to 2013, continuing a healthy trend toward market stability and confidence in the Thoroughbred industry. During last year’s 13-day sale, 2,819 yearlings were sold for $279,960,500. The average was $99,312, and the median, the critical indicator of a healthy market, remained the same as the record $50,000 from 2013.
Twelve yearlings in the catalog represent Phase 1 of the Complete Dispersal of Jerre Paxton’s Northwest Farms LLC, Greenfield Farm, agent. Phase 2 of the Paxton dispersal, which consists of 42 broodmares, weanlings and broodmare prospects, will be held during Keeneland’s 2015 November Sale. 4
Thirteen yearlings sold for $1 million or more in 2014. Topping the sale at $2.2 million apiece were two colts: a son of War Front sold to M.V. Magnier of Ireland-based Coolmore and a colt by Tapit purchased by Shadwell Estate Co. Ltd. of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum of Dubai. Buyers represented the U.S., Europe and Dubai, along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Japan, Korea, Russia, and Central and South America. The sale’s 10 leading buyers by total purchases were fairly equally divided between U.S. and international interests.
Keeneland Pedigree: Catalog Updates Feature Race Replays Keeneland.com/sales has a wealth of free and useful sales information for horsemen and the media. For Book 1 horses, Keeneland Pedigree has enhanced catalog updates with links to race charts and race-replay videos for active members of their family.

To access Keeneland Pedigree, click on Keeneland.com/ sales, Catalogs, Interactive Index and the blue Keeneland Pedigree icon. Catalog updates are in red. Links to charts and videos of recent races are in blue.
Consignors also can receive alerts about deadlines and when Keeneland has processed their entries, when catalog updates and Repository activity occur, when a horse is nearing the sales ring, its hammer price and the buyer’s name.
For example, Hip No. 414 is the colt by Malibu Moon-Lotta Kim, by Roar. Click on the Keeneland Pedigree icon to see the enhanced catalog page featuring current race information about active members of the colt’s female family, including Rachel’s Valentina, winner of the recent Spinaway (G1) at Saratoga, and impressive maiden winner Jess’s Dream.
Equineline Sales Catalog iPad App Another popular online tool is the Equineline Sales Catalog iPad App, which can be downloaded free from the App Store on iPad or at iTunes. The app loads sales catalogs to an iPad and enables users to write on and highlight pages in color; assign ratings; make conformation notes; record veterinary information; create short lists and view mini-catalogs; take, view, store and email photos; see catalog updates; perform various catalog searches; and access sales results.
Other information on Keeneland.com/sales includes a list of outs for the current sale; searchable catalogs and results for sales beginning with the 1999 July Selected Yearling Sale; and lists of stakes-winning Keeneland sales graduates that can be sorted by sale and are available by year back to 2010. The sale also is streamed live, and each yearling’s catalog page appears when the horse is in the ring.
Keeneland’s industry commitment
Catalog updates for all horses in the sale occur daily and are sortable.
Keeneland’s sales division is the engine that drives Keeneland. Revenue from sales fuels purses at the two racing seasons, which are among the richest in North America. Concurrently, many stakes winners at Keeneland are graduates of our auction ring.
Keeneland Portfolio: Management Tool for Buyers Keeneland Portfolio (Keeneland.com/sales/Keenelandportfolio) streamlines and maximizes information about horses cataloged to the current sale and previous Keeneland auctions. Buyers can create short lists of yearlings and receive alerts if the horse is withdrawn, has a catalog update, is nearing the sales ring and has a hammer price. Users also can research whether a horse appeared in a previous Keeneland sale. Clients can manage and update their personal account information and can apply for credit, check their credit balances, assign authorized agents for their account and monitor sales activity.
Because of the synergy between its racing and sales operations, Keeneland plays a unique role in the Thoroughbred industry. Keeneland is structured as a private, for-profit corporation, and reinvests its earnings in the Thoroughbred industry. Sales revenue pays for the operation of Keeneland’s racing and sales facilities; enables Keeneland to make charitable contributions that benefit the Thoroughbred industry and the Central Kentucky community (since 1936, these contributions near $20 million); and allows Keeneland to pursue innovative safety and welfare initiatives for people and horses and to fund equine research that benefits all breeds and disciplines.

From 1944, the inaugural year, through 1948, the fall yearlings were sold in an auction which included broodmares, weanlings, stallions, and horses of other ages. In 1949, approximately half of the yearlings were sold in a separate October sale and the remainder in a November mixed stock sale as usual. In 1950, the yearlings were sold separately by session, but in the same week as the other stock. In 1951, the fall yearling sales were set farther apart from the fall mixed stock sale, with the yearling auctions preceding the other sale by a week or more. In 1960, the yearling sales were moved to the month of September. In 1981, the yearling sale was held in two four-day segments. Selected sessions were inaugurated in 1989.
