Welcome to the 2017 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale

eeneland has cataloged 1,892 horses for its 59th Horses of All Ages Sale, to be held Jan. 9-13, 2017. The catalog includes 726 broodmares, 147 broodmare prospects, 732 yearlings, 280 horses of racing age and seven stallions and stallion prospects. “The January Sale traditionally is a solid market for broodmares, broodmare prospects and short yearlings, which we expect will be popular because not all buyers filled their orders when weanlings were offered at the November Breeding Stock Sale,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston said. “The January Sale also affords breeders the opportunity to replenish or upgrade their broodmare bands with many quality mares in foal to top stallions and numerous young broodmare prospects from which to choose.” Yearlings representing 165 of the world’s top sires are cataloged to the 2017 January Sale, including Arch, Awesome Again, Bodemeister, Cairo Prince, Candy Ride (ARG), City Zip, Declaration of War, Dialed In, Distorted Humor, Exceed And Excel (AUS), Ghostzapper, Giant’s Causeway, Into Mischief, Kitten’s Joy, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, More Than Ready, Orb, Pioneerof the Nile, Scat Daddy, Shanghai Bobby, Tapit, Tapizar, The Factor,

Uncle Mo, Union Rags, Verrazano and Violence. Grade 1 winners in 2016 who were consigned as yearlings to the January Sale include Miss Temple City, winner of Keeneland’s Maker’s 46 Mile and Shadwell Turf Mile and the Matriarch at Del Mar on Dec. 4; Mind Your Biscuits, winner of Santa Anita’s Malibu on Dec. 26; and Practical Joke, winner of the Hopeful and Champagne in New York. Grade 3 winners Alert Bay and Noholdingback Bear were purchased as yearlings at the January Sale.

KEENELAND SALES STAFF Bob Elliston | Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston joined Keeneland in August 2016 as Vice President of Racing and Sales. He previously held the position of Executive Vice President and COO of Breeders’ Cup Limited since 2012. Keeneland’s globally significant racing and sales business lines are consolidated under Elliston to align resources, foster relationships with horsemen and continuously improve the Keeneland experience from sales ring to winner’s circle. Elliston oversees departments that provide support for racing and sales, including Broadcast Services, Communications, Marketing and Sponsorship. Prior to joining Breeders’ Cup, Elliston was President and CEO of Turfway Park. He has earned the Kentucky HBPA’s Man of the Year distinction and the Kentucky Harness Horsemen’s Presidential Award for distinguished service. Previously, he was Executive Chairman of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) Board. He also is on the boards of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, Lexington Center Corporation and LexArts. Bob and his wife, Sharon, an attorney, have two daughters, Abby and Haley.

Mark Maronde | Director of Sales Development Mark Maronde brings more than 20 years of experience in the Thoroughbred industry to the Keeneland sales team, which he joined in April 2009. He assists with recruiting and marketing efforts for the Keeneland sales and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Maronde spent five years in the bloodstock division of WinStar Farm prior to Keeneland. He honed his inspection and sales recruiting skills as National Field Representative for Barretts’ Equine Ltd. (1996–2009) and with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (2007–2009). He also worked for Cromwell Bloodstock from 1990–1995.

Geoffrey G. Russell | Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russell has served as Keeneland’s Director of Sales since June 2001. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Russell gained early experience at Coolmore Stud and as a bid spotter at Goffs. He came to the U.S. in 1982, first working at Fasig-Tipton and then at Elmendorf Farm. He returned to Fasig-Tipton as Vice President of Fasig-Tipton Appraisals and Director of Sales Administration prior to joining Keeneland in 1996 as Assistant Director of Sales to Rogers Beasley. Russell represents Keeneland on the Sales Integrity Task Force, International Catalogue Standards Committee (NA) (ICSC), International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee (IRPAC), and is Chairman of the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA). He is also on the board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation.

Thomas J. Thornbury | Associate Director of Sales Operations Tom Thornbury was named Keeneland’s Associate Director of Sales in June 2002. In his position, Thornbury acts as liaison to consignor interests, cultivates relationships with horsemen in emerging racing markets, and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team. Thornbury grew up on the farm owned by his father, John Thornbury, and partner Dr. Robert Copelan, where he was involved in training and farm management, and assisted in equine orthopedic surgery. Thornbury spent nearly 10 years at Airdrie Stud, owned by former Governor and Mrs. Brereton C. Jones, working first as yearling manager and later as general manager. He is a past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ Club, and formerly served on the board of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders. 4

Ryan Mahan | Director of Auctioneers Ryan Mahan considered following his stepfather, Dr. Robert Copelan, into veterinary medicine. Instead, he finds himself in the auction stand at the leading Thoroughbred sales company in the world. Mahan initially had his own auction company but in 1977 came to work at Keeneland as a bid spotter and later chief announcer for several years following the departure of Tom Hammond. Promoted to auctioneer in the mid-1980s, he succeeded the late Tom Caldwell in 2001 as senior auctioneer. Mahan also serves on the inspection team for Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale.

Suzy White | Director of Sales Accounting Suzy White oversees the entire accounting process related to Keeneland sales. This includes working closely with buyers and consignors for the collection and distribution of sales proceeds. White was born in Lexington, grew up in nearby Georgetown, Ky., and has family involvement in the industry. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, she has worked at Keeneland for 23 years.

Chip McGaughey | Sales Associate Chip McGaughey joined the Keeneland sales team on Feb. 1, 2015. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, McGaughey gained experience in racing through his father, Hall of Fame trainer C.R. “Shug” McGaughey, and while working as an inaugural Brand Ambassador for America’s Best Racing, The Jockey Club’s initiative to introduce young people to the sport. McGaughey formerly was an account planner at Cornett Integrated Marketing Solutions in Lexington, where, in addition to managing the Brand Ambassador Program, he was responsible for marketing America’s Best Racing and the Keeneland sales.

Jesse Ullery | Sales Associate Jesse Ullery, who has served as a Pedigree Announcer at Keeneland sales since January 2014, joined Keeneland’s Sales Department as Sales Associate on Feb. 22, 2016. He was the director of racing at Fair Meadows and Will Rogers Downs in Oklahoma. Born in Montana and raised in Phoenix, Ullery has a family heavily involved in racing. He was introduced to the sport by his grandfather Burton Farley, a trainer in the Northwest and at Turf Paradise, and by his aunt Coralee Farley, a longtime racing official. His mother, LeAnn Hickman, works for Coady Photography. Ullery’s first involvement in equine auctions came while working in the summers at a monthly sale in Montana managed by his father, Keith Ullery. He later gained experience at Thoroughbred sales conducted by the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society, Heritage Place and the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company. The PA announcer for his high school sports teams, Ullery at 19 became the track announcer at Fair Meadows in Tulsa in 2007. He was named to the same post at Will Rogers and Blue Ribbon Downs in Oklahoma the following year. 5

January Horses of All Ages Sale 59th Annual Keeneland inaugurated the January Horses of All Ages Sales in the 1950s, conducting the first editions of the sale in 1956 and 1957. Following a three-year hiatus, the January Sale was resumed in 1961 and has been held annually since. As the name implies, the January Horses of All Ages Sale offers a variety of racing and breeding stock, including broodmares, broodmare prospects, yearlings, racing prospects and horses of racing age, stallions and stallion prospects, and stallion shares and seasons.
