ABOUT KEENELAND SALES Undefeated 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify, the Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male, is among the outstanding horses who have sold at Keeneland, the world’s leading Thoroughbred auction house. In 2016, the Scat Daddy colt was purchased for $500,000 at the prestigious September Yearling Sale. Keeneland sells more champions and stakes winners than any other sales company while offering state-of-the-art facilities and a range of amenities for its diverse international clients who buy horses at the September Sale, as well as the November Breeding Stock Sale, January Horses of All Ages Sale and April Two-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale. Keeneland employs a year-round outreach strategy to recruit buyers from across the U.S. and all corners of the world. The depth and breadth of Keeneland’s buying bench, assembled by the sales team as part of a global, year-round marketing and recruitment effort, set the auction house apart from its competitors. Major buyers from across North America and more than 20 foreign countries representing Europe, the Middle East, Asia, South America and

Additional measures of the success of the September Sale include: • Overall, Keeneland sales have produced 22 Kentucky Derby (G1) winners, 25 Preakness (G1) winners and 20 Belmont (G1) winners. This year, September Sale alumni won two-thirds of the Triple Crown in Preakness winner War of Will and Belmont winner Sir Winston. • Seven graduates of the September Sale received 2018 Eclipse Awards as North American champions: Accelerate, Game Winner, Jaywalk, Justify, Monomoy Girl, Roy H and Unique Bella. • September Sale graduates that won Breeders’ Cup races in 2018 were Accelerate (Classic), Bulletin (Juvenile Turf Sprint), City of Light (Dirt Mile), Game Winner (Juvenile), Jaywalk (Juvenile Fillies), Monomoy Girl (Distaff) and Roy H (Sprint). • The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities recognized four graduates of the September Sale for their performances in 2018, naming Accelerate the world’s third highestrated horse and highest-rated horse on dirt; Group 1 winner Roaring Lion the world’s top-rated 3-year-old; Justify the highest-rated 3-year-old in the U.S.; and Roy H the world’s top-rated sprinter.

WELCOME TO THE 2019 SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE Keeneland has cataloged 4,644 yearlings for the 76th annual Keeneland September Yearling Sale to be held Sept. 9-22. The auction, which attracts the Thoroughbred industry’s most prominent domestic and international buyers to purchase horses to compete at the highest levels of racing globally, for nine consecutive years has produced the top-priced yearling sold at auction in North America.
adequate time to inspect these horses,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston said. “We feel the revised format of the 2019 September Sale and the other exciting changes at Keeneland will create a successful atmosphere that rewards participants.”
This year’s sale features a revised format for Books 1 and 2 among the changes and enhancements.
The September Sale will cover 13 sessions, the same as in 2018. The format is as follows:
In the adjustment to Week 1 of the 2019 September Sale, Book 1 will encompass the auction’s first three days with 190, 190 and 189 yearlings cataloged, respectively, each day. After a dark day with no auction on Thursday, Sept. 12, the sale resumes with Book 2 featuring 365 yearlings cataloged in each of the fourth and fifth sessions on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14.
Book 1 – Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 9-11. Sessions begin at noon ET daily. A total of 569 yearlings are cataloged over the three days. Thursday, Sept. 12 – A “dark day” when no sale will be conducted. Book 2 – Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14. Sessions begin at 10 a.m. with a total of 730 horses in the two-day catalog. Books 3-6 – Sunday-Sunday, Sept. 15-22. Barn Area Renovations and Hospitality September Sale clients will see the results of the first phase of Keeneland’s multiyear project to renovate the stable area. Barns 11-19, which are located closest to the Sales Pavilion, feature new roofs, regraded walking rings, a new drainage system, upgraded LED lighting, new electrical wiring and new trees. “The goal of this project is not only to enhance the barn areas but to bring the walking rings and areas where consignors present horses for inspection on par with the caliber of horses being showcased,” Keeneland Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Vince Gabbert said. Meanwhile, the September Sale will offer expanded customer service and exciting new amenities. The September Sale will mark the return of the Saddling Paddock Chalet, which debuted during the 2015 Fall Meet and was a feature of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The Chalet, which runs the length of the Paddock, will serve the buffet lunch formerly offered in the Phoenix Room in the Grandstand. And, beginning this year, the buffet will be available the entire sale. In addition, sales clients may take advantage of other upgrades, including an increased variety of food offerings throughout the Sales Pavilion, additional customer service and concierge staffing and a texting platform for golf cart requests, valet and other needs. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, whose first crop of yearlings sold last year, is represented by his first crop of 2-year-olds in 2019. Other stallions with their first crop at the track and also with yearlings in the 2019 September Sale include Bayern, Carpe Diem, Competitive Edge, Constitution, Fast Anna, Gleneagles (IRE), Golden Horn (GB), Honor Code, Karakontie (JPN), Khozan, Lea, Liam’s Map, Palace Malice, Summer Front, Tapiture and Tonalist.

SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE 76TH ANNUAL
The Keeneland September Yearling Sale has evolved from humble beginnings to become the global marketplace for Thoroughbred yearlings.
Keeneland/Photos by Z
From 1944, the inaugural year, through 1948, the fall yearlings were sold in an auction which included broodmares, weanlings, stallions and horses of other ages. In 1949, approximately half of the yearlings were sold in a separate October sale and the remainder in a November mixed stock sale as usual. In 1950, the yearlings were sold separately by session, but in the same week as the other stock. In 1951, the fall yearling sales were set farther apart from the fall mixed stock sale, with the yearling auctions preceding the other sale by a week or more. In 1960, the yearling sales were moved to September. In 1981, the yearling sale was held in two four-day segments. Selected sessions were inaugurated in 1989.
A colt by War Front was purchased by Coolmore’s M.V. Magnier for $2.4 million at the 2018 September Sale and was the highest-priced yearling sold in North America during the year.
