Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale is globally recognized as the epicenter for yearling trade. Year after year, major buyers from around the world travel to Keeneland in September to find horses capable of making history. As such, it is the leading barometer of the health $200,000 of the Thoroughbred industry. The exceptional performance of the 2012 and 2013 September Sales signal resurgence in the Thoroughbred market, and an optimistic outlook for 2014. Buyers are responding with confidence to a fair, realistic market and smaller foal crops in recent years have created strong demand for quality yearlings. The September Sale offers buyers the cream of the North American yearling crop, fueling competition that elevates trade at every level. The buoyant forecast for this year’s September Sale is
based on a number of positive indicators realized during the previous two years. From high clearance rates, to large crowds and even larger gains, all signs point to a healthy and stable market, providing a foundation for vigorous $240,000 growth. In 2013, remarkable num$200,000 bers confirmed the September Sale’s dominance in the yearling market. For instance, it $210,000 produced 18 of the 20 yearlings sold for $1 million or more in North America last year. Furthermore, 15 individual buyers purchased those 18 seven-figure yearlings, and 69 individual buyers spent a total of $1 million or more. The cumulative average topped $100,000 for the first time since 2007, and only the fourth time in September Sale history. Further driving significant gains last year was a new sale format, which recalibrated the two-week auction to reflect
Positive indicators from 2012, 2013 sales: Double-digit gains in cumulative results. Robust commerce evidenced by clearance rates of 80 percent. An exceptionally deep and diverse buying bench, comprising major domestic and foreign buyers. Enormous crowds that energized the sale until the very last day.
three distinct markets – Week One, the Weekend, and Week Two. Consignors and buyers alike applauded the efficiencies created by the changes. Owing to its proven ability to generate momentum throughout the sale, Keeneland sales officials have announced that the format will remain in place for the upcoming 2014 September Yearling Sale.
“Keeneland September Powers On” — Thoroughbred Daily News, September 13, 2013
“The market is excellent. We’re having a great sale top to bottom really and there is just a lot of money around, a lot of new money signing expensive tickets that we haven’t seen in the last few years.”

Of the week’s two toppriced yearlings, one went to a foreign interest, M.V.
