MomOfTheMonth Tanner turns a Wild One! His day is filled with so much love, family, and friends. He beams from ear to ear. He laughs with his belly-jiggling laugh. He tears his smash cake apart, like a boss! This is Heaven. This is perfection. Now, let’s rewind back to behind the scenes (que the chipmunk voices) and see how this all came about. This was my and my husband’s first rodeo…and boy, did the bull take us by the horns! Our little squirt just turned one! Where does the time go? I thought about what his birthday would be like and then…BAM! Here it is. What were my thoughts and plans for him? Where do I gather everything? Most of our family is out of town, so what will be best for them? Brain overload! We were stressed beyond the max having to plan a party three and a half hours away. I know, I know, we should be saying Woo hoo! It’s a party! Who doesn’t like a good birthday party, right? Full of fun, giggles, smiles, cake, ice cream, presents, and stress. Did I just say stress? What’s that? No way! I mean, what mother stresses over the perfect theme for her little one, perfect cake, perfect outfit, perfect present, perfect location, perfect everything? I highly suggest reading this month’s feature Birthday Party Rescue by Laurie Zottmann. You’ll find so many great tips and tidbits on how to have a smooth sailing birthday and a little friendly advice...it is okay to ask for help! No one wants to ask for help, because we can do it all. Well, so we think. I was determined to plan every last detail, bring every single thing, and organize the entire shindig. I only wanted guests to come to a party, with no assigned jobs, and enjoy themselves. My goodness gracious, I was in for a rude awakening. Turns out, I can’t be pulled in 50 directions at one time and I just may need help. Also turns out that I have a pretty amazing family who loves to lend a helping hand. Wonder where you are going to get all the supplies, cake, food, etc. for your child’s next birthday? Ladies, listen up when I tell you, keep this issue and use the Birthday Party Planning Guide to help with your party planning all year long. I wish I had it for Tanner’s fist birthday, but I will definitely have it for every birthday from here on out! Now, back to the party. As I said, this is the first time for his dad and I to throw this “high expectation” party. We had a few blank stares at each other thinking, when do we start? When do we do the cake, presents, piñata? Things started pretty smoothly and it became time for the smash cake! YES!!!! “Alright buddy, all eyes are on you. Show them what you’ve got.” The crowd starts singing Happy Birthday sort of choppy, until we all got into a rhythm. It was going so well until Tanner decides he wants to cry near the middle. “Okay, okay, it’s his party and he can cry if he wants to.” So the crowd then dwindles down, but we have to get through the rest of this! It’s his first birthday, after all. So it picks back up and is finished. Phew! And would you know, this child in all his rolls of glory, dove into his cake and all was well! The rest of the party was a blast. Presents, family, friends, and playing with everyone (followed by a nap) was so worth every little plan, stress, and worry. Have you ever noticed that the day of, everything comes together perfectly? It’s because of you! You come out on top from all of the hard work. I can’t begin to thank Greater Pensacola Parents for allowing me to be Mom of the Month. It is such an honor. And remember, Happy Planning and may the birthday party odds ever be in your favor!

LivingWithChildren by John Rosemond
Addressing Siblings with Different Strengths Q: We have a 7-year-old son and two girls
ages 9 and 6. The girls are gifted academically and athletically. He simply can’t keep up with them. They’re even better at bike-riding. As a result, he doesn’t want to participate in sports. If on a rare occasion he plays with the girls, he has to win and becomes very upset if he doesn’t. He’s making a habit out of feeling bad about himself. My husband and I have talked with him about this issue on numerous occasions, but to no avail. Do you have any advice as to how we can address this with him?
A: My advice is that you stop trying to
address this with him. You’ve no doubt said all there is to say including anything I might suggest that you say. Your son may not be an academic standout, but he’s smart. He’s heard you. He is simply doing what human beings are inclined to do: He’s seizing the opportunity to make his rather good life into a soap opera—an “oh, poor pitiful me” drama.
Sometimes, humans would rather make a drama out of issues in their lives than solve them. The dramas in question get them lots of attention, which is precisely what this drama is getting your son. The fact is that not all of life’s problems can be solved, and the earlier one accepts that fact, the better. It is also a fact that it is not a parent’s job to solve all of a child’s problems and the earlier a parent accepts that, the better for both parent and child. Unfortunately, one of the doctrines of what I call the “Good Mommy Club” says that Good Mommies solve all of their children’s problems (or burn themselves down to a nub in the attempt to do so). Such is the destructive nature of today’s Mommy Culture. Another fact: Because you have no control group, you don’t know for sure whether your son’s avoidance of sports is due to having two very athletic sisters. He might not want to participate in sports if he was your only child. And let’s put this sports thing into perspective: to wit, most of these adult-organized, adult-micromanaged sports will be irrelevant to anything a child is doing
when said child is a 30-year-old adult. I know a good number of successful adults who did not participate in any organized sports as children. Another fact: When children mope, more often than not they need to simply be left alone. The more parents engage children in discussions of their emotions, the worse those emotions get and the more likely it is that the issues in question will become personal soap operas. A personal soap opera is an albatross around the neck, and a personal soap opera that gets its claws (pardon the mixed metaphor) into a 7-year-old child is likely to become permanent. It sounds like you’re about to step over that line. Talking is not the solution to everything. That’s also a fact, by the way. Sometimes, a shrug of the shoulders and “Well, kiddo, I’ve said a whole lot about that and just don’t know what else to say… I guess you’re just going to have to figure out how to live with (whatever)” is the best response. That won’t produce instant improvement, but it will put you and your son on the proper path. Family psychologist John Rosemond answers parents’ questions on his website at www.rosemond.com.

Gulf Coast Kids’ House Benefits from Navy Federal 5k Run/Walk
Leaders from Navy Federal Credit Union recently presented a check for $16,000 to the board of directors and staff of the Gulf Coast Kids’ House. The money was raised during the 2016 Navy Federal 5K Run/Walk which took place April 9 in downtown Pensacola. While Navy Federal may be well known to the Pensacola community for bringing new jobs to the region, the not-for-profit credit union remains committed to community service. Each year the business selects a local 501(c)(3) charity to receive the proceeds raised from the race. This year’s race beneficiary was Gulf Coast Kids’ House. Perfectly timed, the 5K race day occurred in April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. With its highest participation yet, at almost 900 runners/walkers, this year Navy Federal helped make a tremendous difference for child abuse victims and their families in Escambia County.

to prevent mosquitoes and mosquito bites. Drain standing water in and around your home: • Replace water in bird baths and pet bowls at least once a week. • Empty standing water in flower pots, garbage cans, buckets, toys, and other large and small items that collect water. • Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that do not collect water. • Keep swimming pools chlorinated and maintained. Empty kiddie pools when not in use. Cover your skin with clothing and repellent: • Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, shoes, and socks when outdoors; light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothing will be the most comfortable. • Apply repellent to bare skin and to clothing. Always use repellents according to label directions. • Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535 are effective. • Use mosquito netting to protect children younger than 2 months old. Cover doors, windows, porches, and patios with screens. Repair broken screens. On the ECSD homepage – ecsd-fl.schoolloop.com – there is a link to the new “Online Student Registration” page – ecsd-fl.schoolloop.com/focus/enrollment. ECSD asks everyone who meets a family new to Escambia County to please tell them to visit this link and start the process to register their children in their neighborhood school. There is also a link to a form that will allow users to enter a street address to find out which elementary, middle and high school serves their new location. New families will still need to go to the school with birth certificates, proof of residency (such as a utility bill), and school physical/shot records, but starting the “paperwork” online will streamline the process and shorten their visit. Any questions should be directed to your closest school or the School Choice Office at (850) 469-5580.

Ransom Academic Team Competes in Atlanta
Gulf Breeze Middle Students Work Together With Yummy Results
Sixth-grade keyboarding classes and eighth-grade home economics classes from Gulf Breeze Middle School teamed up to make apple pie tarts on National Apple Pie Day May 13. Students prepped and assembled the tasty treats in home ec class, then shared their culinary creations with the staff. Sixth-graders typed and printed the recipe in their keyboarding class; eighth-graders helped the younger ones in the kitchen. From left, eighth-graders Summer Stanley and Emma Chestney work with sixth-graders Olivia Hoffman and Adrienne Flowers to make apple pie tarts.
Greater Pensacola Parents I July 2016
The following Ransom Middle School students traveled to Atlanta May 6-8 to compete for the first time in the 2016 Middle School National Championship Tournament (MSNCT): Maggie Brown, Team Captain, 7th grade; Braden Boutwell, 8th grade; Ravyn Brown, 8th grade; Chris Espy, 8th grade; Natalie Holt, 8th grade; and Elizabeth McConnell, 8th grade. These students played on teams which finished in the top 15% of all teams at tournaments throughout the year. Alternates were players new to the team, who participated in Nationals to gain experience. They were: Katie-Rose Haley, 7th grade; Emmalei Miller, 6th grade; and Lili Rollins, 7th grade. The teams report that the competition was stiff and they played teams from as far away as Oklahoma and New Hampshire. They learned that many of the top teams have been competing since elementary school. After the Friday evening scrimmages (practice rounds), the students were thrilled during the preliminary rounds on Saturday to enjoy a win before lunch and another one in the afternoon! Two players finished in the top 200 among nearly 900 students nationwide! Focused teamwork allowed Ransom to finish ahead of several more experienced teams. Summer practices are in the works with veteran players helping to get the team ready for next year.

East Hill Offers Academic Opportunities
As a college preparatory school, East Hill Christian School offers honors classes, as well as dual enrollment courses on campus. In addition to DE courses offered on East Hill’s campus, juniors and seniors can take classes on the campus of Pensacola State College for high school-college credit. Classes at East Hill are taught from a Christian perspective, and opportunities for Bible classes and weekly chapels only strengthen an education with a Biblical worldview. Preparing students for college is essential, but preparing them for life by partnering with the family is our heartbeat. The 8th-grade class is shown at its Moving Up Ceremony in May 2016.

Creative Learning Academy Summer Camp Honors Hometown Heroes
At Creative Learning Academy, students three years old through eighth grade dedicated a full week of summer camp to honoring local public servants that go above and beyond in our community. The summer camp guest list included a line-up of speakers from the United States Navy, Escambia Search and Rescue, Pensacola Police Department, and the Pensacola Fire Department. Creative Learning Academy welcomed paramedic Walter Kerman, shown above checking blood pressure with a student, and U.S. Navy pilot, Lieutenant Mason Hoyt, to demonstrate and explain different aspects of their jobs. Karen Bowdich is the summer camp director. She says she wanted to offer a unique set of camps that would leave a lasting impact on the students. “We have classic summer fun all summer long and this week offers a unique opportunity for children to learn about how important the jobs of these public servants are and what it means to honor them,” Bowdich said. “These men and women do so much for our community and at the end of the day, they leave others inspired by their efforts. That’s why we invited them to CLA, to share the reasons why they choose to serve and protect our families.” Hometown Heroes Week also included hands-on craft sessions so that each young camper had the opportunity to express their gratitude through pictures and artwork. Creative Learning Academy’s summer camp will continue to offer weekly, themed camps through the month of July. Camp experiences range from water days to Star Wars camps. Why Voluntary Pre Kindergarten?
Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is a FREE program that offers each child an opportunity to learn the skills needed to have a positive experience in kindergarten, which is a jumpstart to a successful life. Parents can choose between private early learning providers and public school providers. There are three VPK Program choices: the School Year Program and Summer Program deliver classroom instruction and are available to all eligible children while the Specialized Instructional Services (SIS) Program is available to children with disabilities for whom one of the mainstream programs may not be an option. School Year Program • 540 instructional hours
Summer Program
• Lead instructor must have training equal to a child development associate credential or greater
• Lead instructor must have a bachelor’s degree or greater
• Classes can have a maximum of 11 students with one Lead Teacher, or a max of 20
• Classes can have a maximum of 12 students with one Lead Teacher
• 300 Instructional hours
students with a Lead and an Assistant
Specialized Instructional Services (SIS) Program This third type of VPK program is available only to children with disabilities who have a current Individual Educational Plan (IEP) from the School District. Services are delivered by specialized providers determined eligible by the Department of Education. This program type is tailored to address the identified needs on a child’s IEP. Anyone who thinks their child might qualify should contact their local Early Learning Coalition for information about this program.
Program entry requirements
There are two eligibility requirements for all VPK Programs; age (four years old by the cutoff date) and residency (must reside in Florida). There is an additional requirement for a child’s participation in the SIS Program (must have an approved IEP). There is no income requirement for any VPK program type. To register a child for the 2015-2016 Summer Program, which begins in June 2016, a child must be born between: September 2, 2010 and September 1, 2011. To register a child for the 2016-2017 School Year Program, which begins in August 2016, your child must be born between: September 2, 2011 and September 1, 2012. Parents must apply online at: https://familyservices2.floridaearlylearning.com In Escambia County parents may use the resources at the Early Learning Coalition, a VPK provider, or the public school system at Spencer Bibbs Elementary, to complete the online application. Staff at these locations are available to assist as needed. Call the Early Learning Coalition at 850-607-8556 for assistance. There are some basic program requirements for parents such as attendance, sign in and out, transportation, and transfers that every parent must agree to. While a VPK program cannot charge parents for the VPK portion of the day, parents should check with their VPK provider of choice to see what, if anything, they may charge for additional child care services, or transportation. All VPK providers are prohibited from charging anything for their VPK classes, this includes registration, material or activity fees. The Early Learning Coalition of Escambia County is a partner with parents. We assist with parents in making VPK applications, researching VPK providers, and downloading other program information. The ELC of Escambia maintains the master list of local private providers and public schools that participate in the VPK program. Call 850-607-8556 or visit the ELC website at www.elcescambia.org for more information. Provided by Vicki Pugh of the Early Learning Coalition of Escambia County.

West Florida High’s Band Learns Marching Strategy
West Florida High School of Advanced Technology recently held Band Rookie Week. Students were taught to match the players next to them step for step as they march forward. Then the learned how to do that while marching backwards, or stepping to the right or left. They also learned to use their peripheral vision to stay in line, adding carrying their instruments at the same height as the rest of their section. All of these steps were learned before the students even played a note! These Rookies were well on their way a couple of days into summer training. By football season, we won’t be able to tell who on the field is a freshman or senior!

Trinitas Christian School said goodbye to its 12th graduating class on May 27. Ten young men and women crossed the stage, received their diplomas and signed the Book of Graduates before processing outside to lay Ebenezer stones uniting them to Trinitas alumni who have gone before them. Dr. Chris Schlect, director of the graduate program at New Saint Andrews College, encouraged the graduates to consider the truest meaning of a “good” education as they leave Trinitas and begin their next chapter at institutions such as Union University, Lipscomb University, Washington and Lee University, the University of West Florida, and New Saint Andrews College. The 2016 graduating class was offered a total just under two million dollars in scholarship funding. To date, the students have accepted a total of $673,000 in scholarships which include the following. Five students were named Florida Academic Scholars from the Florida Bright Futures Program. Sean McGee will attend New Saint Andrews College in the fall. He has been awarded the the Association of Classical Christian Schools Student Scholarship in the amount of $4,000. Chloe Gregg, class salutatorian, and Caleb Heifner will both attend the University of West Florida using Nautilus Scholarships for $24,000 each. Brooks Hunter has received the Barbara Clinger/Elizabeth Madden Memorial Scholarship as well as the Choctaw Teachers Association scholarship. She will study with the prestigious International Performing Arts Institute in Kiesferfelden, Germany. Ben Noland earned both the Presidential Scholarship and an athletic scholarship totalling $95,000 over his four years at Union University. Bekah Hubbell accepted the Trustees Scholarship from Liscomb University for $160,000 over four years. The valedictorian for the class of 2016, Colby Gilley, was awarded both the Johnson Scholarship and a National Merit award totaling $263,000 from Washington and Lee University. Ron Gilley, new headmaster of Trinitas Christian School, encouraged the students during the annual Honors and Awards ceremony to remember, “to whom much is given, much is expected” and also encouraged those that worked “as unto the Lord” but did not receive honors and scholarships to “be neither discouraged nor dismayed.” Colby Gilley, valedictorian of the 2016 Trinitas graduating class, is shown being congratulated by Kenneth Trotter, Trinitas’ founding administrator. 18

Offer Kids More Independence Is your child declaring his or her independence lately? Or do you wish your kid would take more initiative? Striking that balance between trust and capability can be tough when it comes to children. Although truths are “self-evident,” not all kids are “created equal.” I have a four-year old who insists on doing every task herself and an eight-year old who prefers to ask for help, even when not needed. Constantly I walk the fine line between being a bystander and stepping up as a mentor. What I have found helpful for my family to gain more independence is to assign jobs, offer choices, and discuss what-if scenarios.
Assign jobs Young kids like to be helpers. Assign your kid a job. No matter the age, a child can assist in a task. Littlest tots can turn pages while reading a book or pick up toys from the floor. Older children can put their dirty clothes in the washing machine, tidy up a room, and wipe a mirror. If moms and dads are doing all the housework alone, change that! Begin with little or low expectations. At first kids will not perform a duty without some complaining or creating a mess. Over time and with encouragement however, kids will improve and offer to help without parents even requesting it. Meal times are a great starting place for delegating tasks. Usually that is when moms and dads are busiest and stressed. My children often hover near me asking, “Is it ready yet?” I reply, “It will be ready sooner if you can help me.” Then I ask one child to set the table with utensils and napkins. My other child can take out cups and pour drink in them. Afterwards both are required to empty food contents and put away their trash. I explain to them how this helps the chores be completed
more quickly. In addition, by everyone doing a part, we can be a stronger and more grateful family unit.
Offer Choices
I notice my children are more willing to do the most mundane things when I build in options. I give them choices as often as possible. Although not adults, kids want to make decisions. I will ask my daughters, “Do you want to use the blue or the pink toothpaste tonight while brushing your teeth?” Skipping dental hygiene is not an option but a sale at the store could lead to a useful variety. By simply having the option to choose a different type of toothpaste, my kids groan less over brushing their teeth. This notion can apply to nearly every ordinary part of the day. Let your kids select their clothing for weekend outings. Or pull out six different options and have them choose one from the pile. As kids become restless, let them decide between playing a board game or putting a craft together. Whenever you can, give your kids an open option. Let them choose a movie to watch, the dessert you’ll eat, and an outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. Children will become better leaders as we allow them opportunities to take ownership, even in the simplest assignments.
For example, my child was on a field trip with her summer camp group last week. While inside an inflatable device, the machine plug came undone from the wall. The device began to fall on my daughter and her friend. She began to cry and panic. Thankfully she was rescued by staff and other kids in her class with no harm done. I took the opportunity to speak to her about it twice since it happened. I asked her, “What would you do differently if this were to occur again?” She replied that she would yell “HELP!” and look for an exit rather than cry and sitting helpless. In reality, should this ever occur, there is no guarantee what my child may do. She may again retreat to fear. However, by talking about it in advance, we are both more equipped mentally to handle a risky circumstance. Spend some time speaking to your children about how they can practice safety and make sound decisions.
Independent Children Lead to Happier, Capable Adults Our children grow up quickly. One day they will govern their own life path. The above suggestions are just a few ways to recruit children in the daily decision making process. Hopefully these tips will lead to more liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all family members.
Discuss What-if Scenarios
As parents we have natural instincts to protect our kids. When frightening news or bad scenarios happen, I try to keep an open dialogue with my children about what has occurred. I use our conversation as a learning technique. My oldest daughter and I play the “whatif” game. I give her a scenario and let her explain how she might deal with the potential risk. This game offers reasoning practice for kids that may help in the future. We even do this after an accident or scary incident. 21

Keeping Vacation Photos G-Rated Summer vacation photos used to mean snapshots of kids posed in front of landmarks or goofing around with cousins at a family reunion. Only a decade ago, parents knew exactly what photos their kids took if only because the camera was family property and parents had to have the photos developed. Now that cameras are embedded in most cellphones, children can take—and distribute— photos without any consultation with parents. As a result, many young people already have embarrassing and potentially risky photos posted on social networking sites and stored in the cellphones of friends as well as strangers. During the summer, when some kids are bored and less supervised, the odds of making mischief with a camera increase. The thought that some of a child’s vacation photos might be provocative or even nude is understandably distressing to parents. Teens, however, aren’t as appalled as they ought to be. One in four teens has participated in sexting and even more have seen or forwarded the photos. Both genders are involved, though girls suffer disproportionate consequences because boys rarely store or forward photos of naked boys. Technology that will allow parents to preview photos before children send them is likely to be available by the end of the year. For this summer, parents will have to talk— often—about what kinds of photos kids are allowed to take and share. Here’s what you need to know. Start young. Middle school students seem to be at especially high risk for sexting, perhaps because they are just discovering their own sexual feelings and they crave the attention of the opposite sex. Girls, in particuGreater Pensacola Parents I July 2016
lar, may consider using an intimate photo as a way of showing a boyfriend how much they care. In one of the most thorough studies of sexting to date, researchers from the Crimes against Children Center at the University of New Hampshire pointed out that a large proportion of the pictures involved in sexting are taken and sent voluntarily by children as young as nine. Have repeated conversations. Young people are growing up in a highly sexualized culture. The message that sexting is cool comes from music videos and social media. Pornographic images are less shocking because they are so readily available online. Most young people have seen or at least heard about sexual photos of their peers, so they often start with a “no-big-deal” attitude. Parents will need to talk about this topic often to convince them otherwise. Lectures are pointless. Instead, take advantage of news reports about sexting to start open-ended conversations. Predict consequences. Adolescents are not developmentally ready to think carefully about how today’s impulse may lead to future problems. They need adults to help them anticipate potential difficulties created by sexual photos. Talk your child through various scenarios. If a relationships breaks up, how will the partners feel about sexy pictures they’ve sent to each other? How will they feel if the photo gets forwarded to one person or a thousand people or ten thousand people? What if a pedophile gets hold of the picture and puts it on a website? What if the photo is seen by the principal at school, the pastor at church, younger siblings, older relatives? Making these consequences vivid makes it less likely that a teen will impulsively send a compromising photo. Explain legal issues. Sending sexual photos of someone under 18 fits the legal description for distribution of child pornography. Police and prosecutors vary a great deal in how stringently they enforce the law. As a result, many teens don’t understand the legal risk they incur if they press “forward” on a racy picture. Be sure your child knows that 22
some young people have been prosecuted and labeled as sex offenders, a designation that can have lifelong consequences. Talk about tagging. Tagging is a social media feature that allows people to identify people in photos that they post. Although this can be a harmless way for young people to share their photos, it takes control about what images can be seen online out of your child’s hands. In particular, tagged photos can show up in the public photo strip at the top of your child’s profile page. Even if you aren’t your child’s “friend” on social media, you should regularly search his or her name to see what photos appear. If tagged photos of your child are inappropriate, try to delete them. On Facebook, visit the Account settings in the upper right of the page. Click on Privacy, a section that contains many useful tools for controlling who sees what on Facebook. To control tagged photos, choose “Customize settings,” then “Photos and Videos you’re Tagged In.” Choose “Customize” again and then click “Make this visible to”. Choose “Only Me” from the drop down menu. Even if your child would never send a sexually explicit photo, he or she may receive one from peers. Encouraging kids to report such messages puts them in a conflicted position. No teen wants to be responsible for getting a friend in trouble. You can, however, make it clear that your child can do something positive simply by deleting the photo. Sharing sexually explicit photos may actually make your child an accessory to a crime. Pressing “delete” is a small kindness to the young person foolish enough to distribute homemade pornography. Like any discussion with teens about sexuality, conversations about sexting can be awkward. It’s also natural for parents to think their own child couldn’t possibly be involved. The truth is that even “nice” kids get involved in sexting, so parents need to be proactive. Talking to children now makes it less likely they will share summer vacation photos that will haunt them when they go back to school in the fall. Everyday Science Is Child’s Play
Recommending the Best Toys and Products for Kids
Our kids live in a world filled with opportunities for science learning. Finding meaningful ways to explore everyday science can sometimes be a daunting task. Giving kids the tools to explore simple physics, chemistry and structures around them can both expose them to scientific principles in digestible bits as well as generate specific conversations where kids (and adults) can learn much more about what’s really happening right in their own environment. The following toys and tools explore more closely scientific principles that are constantly working in the world around us, everyday.

Primary Science Mix & Measure
Magnetic Match Rings (Popular Playthings)
Early handling of magnets reveals their power to attract and repulse, but there is so much more to be discovered about the positive and negative effects of magnetism. The Magnetic Match Rings set offers a structure to explore not only the polarity of magnets and how they react against each other, but also offers the challenge of creating and matching patterns that use and illustrate how magnetism works. Including 10 color-coded magnetic rings (each with a positive and negative side), a magnetic pole stand and 40 challenge cards, this set’s directed activities are a visible demonstration of the largely hidden power of magnets. An attractive choice for both visual and hands-on learners, this set is easily stored and portable for on the go.
(Learning Resources)
While children are early arrivals to the attraction of scooping and pouring, this kind of play is also an ideal opportunity to fine tune the activity into a primary introduction to volume measurement and very basic math. This set includes four measuring cups, three measuring spoons, a lidded bowl and a simple scale. Designed with small hands and short attention spans in mind, activity cards guide young learners through explorations that expose them to density, quantity, weight and more. Coupling kids’ natural desire to pour, mix and observe results, this kit provides the extra tweaks that enhance learning aspects that support their future understanding of measurement and mixtures. Kitchen counters, tub ledges and bathroom sinks are the new frontiers of early science learning!
Robot Mouse Coding Activity Set
Smartphone Science Lab
As STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning becomes increasingly vital in the academic toolbox of our kids, finding play resources that support STEM is more important than ever. For the kids who are curious about computers, programming, and video games, the Robot Mouse Coding Set is an ideal primer to lay the groundwork for understanding the science behind these marvels. Coding cards guide kids through simple click programming as they plot the mouse’s path through a maze toward the cheese. The mouse features simple directional and action buttons on its back to make programming easy. With 16 maze grids, 22 walls and three tunnels, the maze is ever-changing and the challenges stay versatile. Spatial reasoning, forward thinking and problem solving become child’s play as the basic concepts of coding are made simple.
As smart phones become an increasingly common part of our adult landscape, kids have begun to mimic our attachment to these tech wonders. But what if a smart phone could become a conduit that channels kids’ attention past the screen and toward exploring the world around them? The Smartphone Science Lab comes with a collection of optical attachments (plus slides and an experiment book) that transform the phone into a tool for exploration. Opening young eyes to light waves, pixels, microscopic viewing, satellites, filtered optics and more, the attachments and guided activities encourage scientific learning using the phone as a tool for discovery. The smart phone ceases to be the destination for a child’s attention, but rather a channel for their broader, independent learning.

Q. Our son is 16, and he just got his first paycheck. He asked us about the best way to manage it, and we’re not sure what to tell him. Do you have any advice?
A. Congratulations on a big moment in your son’s life! I’m sure he’s proud, and I’m glad he has parents who want to teach him how to grow into a financially responsible young man. I think giving is a really big deal at this age. I’d recommend putting 10 percent toward your church or a good, local charity. It’s very important to teach kids about the spiritual and financial benefits of being a giver. The remaining 90 percent you might split evenly between savings and spending in the beginning. You can always go a little heavier on the savings portion if there’s a concrete goal, like college or a car, in mind. The pro-
cess of thinking ahead and setting goals is always a good exercise, too. The goal here, in addition to teaching him the value and benefits or work, is to build the muscles of his character. Financially speaking, as parents, we should want our children to grow to be givers, savers and wise, careful spenders. If they become all three of these when they’re young, they won’t be financially irresponsible adults later!
Q. My mom and dad filed bankruptcy recently and are on a fixed income of $2,200 a month. They gave up their house, and my wife and I helped them find an apartment. We’re also trying to give them other help while they’re getting back on their feet. The problem is, we’re paying off debt and trying to get our own finances in better shape. I think my sister should help out
some, too, but I’m not sure how to approach her about this.
A. It’s not out of line to ask her to help and then gauge her interest and willingness. I mean, it’s your parents we’re talking about. Still, you can’t force someone to do something they can’t do or simply don’t want to do. Before you approach your sister, you might try working up a monthly budget on your parents. It doesn’t have to be complicated — just a one-page document showing their situation. Let her see that mom and dad are struggling right now, and suggest that you both chip in a little each month until they’re back on their feet financially. Don’t point fingers or make accusations, because that will ruin things in a hurry. Family should always try to pull together in times like this. In most cases, things like this work out fine and family bonds become even stronger.

“I mo lik mo W did we rig the sim ros wa
Have you ever felt like you didn’t
we divvied up the jobs. We ended up with a fun day at the park. There was a crown, some cupcakes, and lots of balloons in her favorite colors. My sweetheart felt like a princess, and I decided we could keep both kids after all. There are lots of tricks that can help you conjure up lowstress birthday fun. Here are some that helped me and other run-down parents give our children a happy day to celebrate their fantastic self:
have the time or energy to give your child the party she deserved? Maybe the birthday fell when you were sick, moving, or working double overtime. It happened to me when my oldest turned three. I was pregnant, as big as a house, and roughly as mobile. I felt like I was neglecting my daughter, and was eager to compensate with an exciting day that was all about her. The baby was due two months before Big One’s birthday. I told myself that as soon as I delivered this lead-filled watermelon, I would bounce right back to my old self and knock this party out of the park. To my dismay, Sweet Daughter the Second was born almost two weeks late, and she was a colicky handful. I stumbled through those recovery weeks on shattered sleep, and was just beginning to achieve a daily shower, when I realized that this much-hyped fiesta needed assembly. “How on earth do parents do this?” I wondered, as I nursed, rocked, nursed, changed, nursed, served cold leftovers, and nursed some more. Luckily, my wonderful family was there. When they asked, “What does she want for her birthday?” I said, “A party!” and Greater Pensacola Parents I July 2016
1. Ask for Help Grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends might be game to help. Someone might even offer to plan the whole event, or maybe a crew would be happy to each bring a snack, a game, or an item of décor.
2. Go Off-Location Rather than cleaning and decorating your house, why not take the party to a restaurant or pool? For no cost, have a picnic at the park, or ask a generous friend or relative to host for you.
3. Keep it Intimate Instead of inviting the whole class or daycare roster, you could plan a special activity with just one or two close friends. Many kids socialize this way naturally, playing one-on-one or in a small group. A family-only party is another way to keep it low-key and focus on a favorite activity. 26
www.greaterpensacolaparents.com
4. Plan an Independence Day 7. Go Old School
11. Call for Costumes
If you feel your child is old enough, maybe this birthday is a great time for that first unchaperoned trip to the mall or the movies. An older tween might really enjoy helping plan and execute this operation with one or two friends whom you trust to behave responsibly.
Create an effortless theme by having everyone come in their favorite Halloween or dress-up outfit. The kids can grab pots and pans and have a costume parade down the street, or a quieter costumefashion show to show off their best catwalk moves and poses.
5. Gather Up a Potluck In the summertime, a laid-back multi-family potluck picnic can be a relaxing way to celebrate. The park or the beach will provide lots of fun with worry-free décor, menu, and activities.
6. Simplify Your Usual “I love planning parties,” says Angela, mom of two, “especially making cakes. I like to top them with figurines built out of modeling chocolate and work up a theme. When my oldest turned four, though, I didn’t have time for the usual prep. We went on holidays just before her birthday, right when I would normally be working on the party. I changed my plan and made a simple cake with colorful batter and icing rosettes. I got it all done in a day, and it was still very pretty and special.”
Julie, a mother of two and grandmother of five, knows her parties. She says, “We have thrown a lot of parties, and the kids still love the simple games, like threelegged races and wheelbarrow races.” More zero-prep games include freeze tag, hide and seek, Simon says, and follow the leader. Older kids might get a kick out of having a dance-off or lip synch battle to music played on your smart phone.
8. Go Back to School Marlene, mom of three, shares this idea about an easy, athletic party; “My neighbor organized a ball hockey party in the school parking lot one weekend. Since it wasn’t a school day, the lot was empty. The boys brought their own sticks, and she just brought a couple of nets, snacks, and cupcakes.
9. Work the Clock Plan your party for mid-morning or midafternoon, so you can serve some easy snacks instead of a whole meal.
10. Work the Calendar Have a small party now, and plan a lavish un-birthday when the timing is better.
12. Camp Out If you have a backyard firepit, try a campout party. Let the kids roast their own hot dogs and marshmallows, and if they’re old enough, sleep over in tents. “We used to have backyard sleepovers in our tent trailer,” tells Abbey, a veteran party-goer. “It was just like camping, except we could come inside and use the nice bathroom.” If you have a child’s birthday coming up at a stressful time, take heart. There are plenty of ways you can create happy memories for your special kid with exactly the time and energy that you have. GPP Laurie loves sharing simple pleasures with her two girls, and is looking forward to a fun birthday season with these laid-back ideas.

A Page in a Book Getting Lost in a Book The word ‘lost’ is an early arrival in most children’s vocabulary. It applies to every important thing in a child’s world that becomes “unfindable” at some point. One sock, the best pacifier, the last cookie (fallen in the carseat), the favorite blanket, an irreplaceable toy – all these things gain critical importance and meaning in the moment that a child realizes they are ‘lost’. And the search begins. And like every search, unexpected treasures are found along the way. The following titles all examine the process of finding something that is hidden or lost, and what is revealed in the journey of discovery.

Alfie’s Lost Sharkie
by Anna Walker (Clarion / Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) When Dad announces bath time, Alfie becomes instantly aware that his beloved Sharkie is missing. The search begins as Alfie looks for his favorite toy in all the customary places (and many outside the norm). With his Dad struggling to keep the evening routine on track, every step along the way is punctuated by new places that Alfie needs to explore in his effort to find Sharkie. With a Dad who is exasperated by all the side-trips, delays and restless resistance from a child who refuses to give up the search, parents will find familiar scenarios throughout this charming journey toward bedtime. Walker’s expressive artwork and soft colors smooth out the mania that accompanies lost ‘lovies’ making it an ideal find for bedtime reading.
Clark in the Deep Sea
by R.W. Alley (Clarion / Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) It’s a rainy afternoon on the porch as a group of siblings each find their own way to stay busy and dry. But the mood changes when youngest sister Annabelle’s imaginary circus performance flies off the high wire as the star attraction. Her beloved stuffed bear launches out into the soggy sea of the yard. Brother Clark springs into action and dives deep within the wet surrounds (and his own colorful musings) as he seeks to find and bring back the lost bear. The dog plays the shark, an umbrella becomes a bathysphere and siblings evolve into an undersea recovery team with a mission to save the day. A make-believe search and rescue has very real implications when a beloved member of the party needs finding!
Where’s the Elephant?
by Stephane-Yves Barroux (Candlewick Press) An elephant, a snake and a parrot enter a wilderness, effectively disappearing in a riot of foliage and color. With only a brief introduction to the animals, young eyes begin searching each subsequent two-page spread to see if they can find the hidden trio. This becomes more challenging as the elephant, snake and parrot camouflage themselves within a search grid (the forest) that’s becoming smaller with each turn of the page. Inspired by his trip to the Amazon where he saw deforestation first-hand, Barroux subtly illustrates the effects of habitat loss within this colorfully rendered and hopeful adventure. Eye-opening in more ways than one, Where’s the Elephant is an inspirational twist on the traditional seek-and-find title.

When children pitch in with chores they learn more than responsibility. Children also acquire competence, selfreliance and self-worth, and an appreciation for teamwork and cooperation--skills that will accompany them throughout their lifetimes. Follow these tips to chill any chore wars in your home.
Begin Early
by Judy M. Miller
Little ones are eager to help. They can help you pick up and put away their toys, match socks, hand you their dishes, bring you ingredients, or stir the muffin batter. They are learning through your everyday experiences and loving guidance.
Start Small
Tasks should not be overwhelming. For example, asking a threeyear-old to clean the bathroom by himself is too much. So is folding all of the laundry. He can, though, learn how to rinse out the tub with a plastic cup after it is used or fold the washcloths and smaller towels.
Provide Choices
One of our jobs as parents is to raise the future’s responsible adults. Doing so begins at home. Parents can begin to build the foundation of responsibility through teaching and expecting their children to do their fare share around the house. Greater Pensacola Parents I July 2016

When your child is older he can take on additional and more complex tasks like taking out the trash, walking the dog, and doing the dishes. These chores have multiple steps involved and will likely require some supervision and training until your child is doing them correctly. Have a family meeting for the purpose of discussing what chores need to be done and how often and who will be assigned to do them. Also make sure everyone understands that they may have to pitch in where needed, say another family member is sick or otherwise unavailable.
Do Your Part
Chores are part of daily life for every person, whether they live with others or not. Model a good attitude about doing chores. Be calm and matwww.greaterpensacolaparents.com

ter of fact when you are doing chores or asking your child to do them. A child who observes his parent doing a chore in this manner is more likely to cooperate when asked to do a chore. Consider partnering with your child, working along side them to complete a task. Partnering offers you the opportunity to explain why you do the task the way you do and demonstrate the steps you take. Ask your child to copy you. You are there to gently and lovingly encourage and guide him.

Provide Incentives and Rewards

5 Tips for Guilt-Free Healthy Living If you have ever felt the need to shout “I need a break” welcome to parenthood! Being a parent is one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever have. However, there are times when being a parent can become overwhelming. Work responsibilities, financial concerns, community obligations and what about your health? Typically in the grand scheme of responsibilities your health takes the back seat. Has the happened to you? Have you ever tried to stick to a fitness regimen and healthy eating plan but your responsibilities and guilt of being away from your family keeps you from focusing on your health? If this is you, don’t feel bad, you’re not alone! At some point, most parents have felt guilty about taking time away from their family
to devote to themselves. Therefore exhale and allow me to provide you with five tips for guiltfree healthy living! Are you ready? Here we go: 1). Ask for what you need: Too often we forget to articulate what we need for ourselves. Therefore have a family meeting and explain what you need. Clearly explain your needs and tell your family how you need to be supported. If this means you need your significant other to help more with the chores to free up healthy time for yourself, be very specific and don’t be afraid of the responses you receive.
and expensive. Therefore discover healthy foods as a group and everyone will be happy! (Or so we can hope!) 4). Find a special place: After a long day of taking care of your family, it is essential to unwind and breathe. Breathing and relaxation can decrease your blood pressure and relax tense muscles. Therefore create or find a special place to claim as your own. Sit for at least 1015 minutes per day and just relax. Your body and mind will thank you.
2). Make yourself a priority: Being a parent is a fulltime job, but you can’t take good care of your children if you don’t take good care of yourself. Therefore schedule at least 3 days per week to work out for at least 1 hour. If you need to, break your work outs into two 30 minute sessions.
5). Laugh out loud: Too often as parents we take ourselves too seriously. Therefore, the next time you forget to do something on your check list, laugh at yourself and let go! Laughter is a great medicine and healing for you and your family. Your health is important to you and your family. Therefore take these five tips and make them a daily habit. Your family and body will say thank you!
3). Invite the family: Invite your family to help plan, shop and prepare healthy meals. Often parents prepare separate meals for different family members. This can be time consuming

Finding Dory MPAA Rating: PG Overall: A Violence: B+ Sexual Content: ALanguage: AAlcohol / Drug Use: A The MPAA has rated Finding Dory PG for mild thematic elements. Picking up where Finding Nemo left off, Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks), his son Nemo (voice of Hayden Rolence) and their good-butforgetful-friend Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres) are happily settled in the clown fishes’ coral reef. Then a discussion about aquatic animals migrating home suddenly reminds the blue tang fish that she once had a family. Eager not to let the memory slip away, Dory determines to search for her mother and father (voices of Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy). Although she usually doesn’t remember important things, Dory knows she will need someone to go with her so she can stay focused on her quest. Reluctantly the risk-adverse Marlin and the naïvely-optimistic Nemo agree to accompany her. With only a cloudy clue about a California location, the trio crosses the ocean. However, once within the shadow of their destination (which turns out to be an aquarium for injured and/or endangered marine life), Dory’s reckless enthusiasm, coupled with her memory lapses, soon separates the group. And that leaves the father and son desperately trying to find Dory, while she distractedly seeks the whereabouts of her parents. Both hijinks and peril ensue as the befuddled Dory evades predators, swims in and out of trouble, and befriends an octopus named Hank (voice of Ed O’Neill) who is on the run from the Institute’s staff. While the danger never seems too intense, the many times the tang fish gets lost and is left all alone may generate some emotional distress for young audience members – especially if any of them have ever had the misfortune of misplacing their caregivers. Yet in true Disney/Pixar style, this animation offers an amazing visual feast, along with a plot full of food for thought. Using Dory’s short term memory loss as a spring board, the script explores learning disorders and other types of challenges. While her friends and some strangers aren’t always as patient with her shortcomings as they could be, the feisty fish’s determination in the face of obstacles soon solicits their sympathy. Meanwhile, her disability becomes a motivation for her to find other hidden abilities. Her example is an inspiration to all, because everyone comes with faults and failings – including many of the other depicted characters. The trick is to learn how to have our strengths compensate for our weaknesses, while in the process remembering to show kindness and understanding to those who have imperfections different from our own. With a minimum of content issues and plenty of creative humor, this powerful message, plus themes of teamwork and the importance of friends and family, are sure to make Finding Dory unforgettable.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Overall: C Violence: CSexual Content: BLanguage: D+ Alcohol / Drug Use: C+ The MPAA has rated Central Intelligence PG-13 for crude and suggestive humor, some nudity, action violence and brief strong language. Dwayne Johnson is known for his philanthropic work with young people and that theme is a strong component in Central Intelligence. We meet Johnson’s character, Robbie Weirdicht, when he is an obese, bullied high school senior. Inexplicably, he’s enjoying a long shower and dancing up a storm in the locker room while the final assembly of the year is taking place. That’s when a small gang of kids find and drag him, literally butt naked (his rear is seen), into the center of the gym. The only classmate that comes to his rescue is Calvin (Kevin Hart), the coolest, can-do-anything guy in the school. Fast forward twenty years and Calvin has married his high school sweetheart (Danielle Nicolet) and works as an accountant. He’s just been rejected for a promotion, which has left him feeling disenchanted with his life. His anxiety is even more heightened when the man who used to be Robbie contacts him through Facebook and convinces him they should meet. Calvin quickly discovers that a different name (he now goes by Bob Stone) is not all that has change about his former acquaintance. He has also morphed into… well… Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Yet for all his newfound assurance, bulging muscles and ability to take down thugs (which he soon demonstrates), Stone still retains much of his former persona -- evidenced by his black fanny pack, rainbow enhanced unicorn t-shirt and quirky personality. After a few drinks the towering, charismatic character talks Calvin into helping him sort out some financial issues… and that’s when the adventure begins. Before he knows what’s happening, Calvin finds himself in a violent situation and isn’t sure if he should be joining the tough guy and accepting his offer of protection, or assisting the CIA agents who are pursuing Stone. Built to showcase the comedic talents of Hart and Johnson, the action plot is merely a framework that strings together a myriad of comedic setups. Still the fun fades after the first half-hour when we begin wanting more story to go with the snickers. Perhaps the greatest disappointment is the amount of violence that obscures a potentially powerful lesson about self-confidence. As well, salty language is peppered throughout the film, including a single sexual expletive, many scatological slangs and crude anatomical terms.
