GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN

Aim is to build the glasshouse office to produce as much energy as possible from renewable sources as it will consume This concept is going to be a zero fossil fuel energy green building and will reduce co2 emissions. Harvests the sun energy for power, heating, cooling and lighting.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN The office needs to achieve some form of measurable sustainability.

Avoid wasting energy by importing materials from across the other side of the world or by transporting skilled labour from the rest of Britain and Europe.

The rating of excellent from the BRE Building research establishment was chosen for the level of sustainability -this was seem ably no problem for the rural zed building

Allow in light for passive solar gain as well as reducing glare and overheating to the interior space, the temperature you need to maintain inside is around 21o. The sun is dynamic , changing according to time of day, time of year and according to the sites latitude. The office buildings orientation and the passage of the sun across the sky is a fundamental step to ensure the orientation works for passive solar so the building can be heated by the sun, and for natural lighting during the day. In the UK the most intense sunlight will fall on the South facing of buildings

In the UK the most intense sunlight will fall on the South facing of buildings, in the development of the office they are going to need a South Facing side so you can receive maximum Solar Heat gain, this falls under the category of Passive Technologies.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN * Passive solar design requires the knowledge to design and orientate buildings so that they can be heated by the sun. * You need fresh air in winter, without heat loss, summer cooling during summer heat waves and you will need shading required in the summer.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN To further reduce the use of unsustainable energy resources we use PV panels to produce electricity and a biomass boiler will provide hot water, and other efficiency measures such as Heat Exchanging Ventilation and Water Conservation Systems will be installed.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN Modern buildings rely on a massive supply of cheap fossil fuels for heating, cooling, and lighting. Take the supply of cheap fossil fuels away, and they become completely uninhabitable for most of the year.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN The offices are constructed using Thermal Mass Materials, what these materials do is to store heat when temperature is high and to discharge the heat at cooler times. Concrete is used to line the inside of the walls ceilings and floors in a 40mm thick lining to maximise thermal mass potential. The pre cast concrete sections are used internally for thermal mass. The point is to capture as much sunlight as possible within the conditioned space or via surfaces that will otherwise harness the energy using material specially designed to store heat when warm and release heat when colder.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN Lower air pressures at higher heights can passively pull air through a building. Stack ventilation uses temperature differences to move air. Hot air rises because it is lower pressure. For this reason, it is sometimes called buoyancy ventilation.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN Incorporate wind driven ventilation that directs air into the building, whilst also drawing used, stale air out. The ventilation unit is an efficient heat recovery unit that transfers the heat from outgoing air to the fresh incoming air. Recovers between 50% and 70% of the warmth from the outgoing stale air When aiming to combine the advantages of solar access and wind conditions, similar compromises can be found using wind cowls or a heat exchange system using the zedcowl.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN Solar panel slates are installed in the same manner as normal roofing slate. massive asset to the office as it is a safeguard against rising energy costs. The energy you create is green and carbon free. Any angle due south at 45o will provide satisfactory results. For each kilowatt of power solar slates require 10m of roof area.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN

We will have a huge energy deficit to face how will we manage when we have to reduce our energy consumption and harness energy from carbon free sources.

GLASSHOUSE STUDIO DESIGN We will eliminate the need of preservatives on timbre used in the building. Try and use the style and structure of the building to achieve character rather than fake layers more natural and minimalist layers is better.
