View from the Director's Box Welcome to week 5 of what now is a 40 match season instead of 42, with the return of Orihuela to division 2B. Of course this now means that we will have two "holidays" during the season, the first being the first Sunday in November, when we were scheduled to visit the Los Arcos stadium in Orihuela. We also will be free at the end of March 2013, when a midweek clash with the same team was promised. We wish Orihuela well as they play a bit of catch up with their opponents, who have games and points in the bag already. It remains early days in our own group and therefore not really possible to draw any sound conclusions as to which sides appear to be those who will form the core of the play off contenders in eight months time. We failed to find the net at Novelda, despite creating a fair number of good chances, and that early reversal has in no way dampened the spirits of the players or backroom staff. La Magdalena is an unhappy hunting ground for Torry, as we still await our first victory there. However, there was considerable doom and gloom following one of our worst home defeats for a while when Muro came and conquered to the tune of 3-0. Our third penalty taker of the month missed our third penalty of the month and we are at risk of becoming a laughing stock if we don't drive home the next twenty! I am sure that a few old hands from the stands would fancy their chances from 12 yards out! Ahead of their away match at Gandia, Llosa showed what a tight defense can achieve as they kept a clean sheet in all their first three games and headed the table with two wins and a draw. They finished two points above relegated Requena last term, much thanks to three valuable points awarded by the league, when Castellon protested their plight by refusing to fulfill the fixture. Had that been played and they lost, they would be playing Preferente football now instead of being near the head of the division three table. It is indeed a funny old game. Gandia put an end to their immaculate defensive record with a 2-0 win Just a reminder that this season the club will be expanding our horizons in relation to social events and we have a big Hallowe'en night of entertainment lined up for 31st October. It will be choc-o-bloc with fun and laughter, dancing and singing and will be well worth the 5 Euro ticket price to the theatre. We hope you will all come and enjoy the evening, whilst at the same time supporting your team in another way.

Only Sixteen It was a weekend to forget for several reasons, emphasised by the paucity of goals - only sixteen from all ten matches. First off Novelda moved 3 points clear at the top of the table thanks to a 2-1 win at Jove and an early Saturday fixture. They netted in the third minute but were pegged back midway through the second half. It was a Ricardo Cavas winner on 78 minutes that secured them all three points, but only after they endured a tense finale when José Sánchez received his marching orders late on. The other Saturday match saw Saguntino move above Torry on to seven points with a 1-0 win at home to Acero. The visitors have only won once at this venue in sixteen tries, so it was much as expected. Borriol stay in the bottom four relegation places as they had the weekend off, with Orhiuela scheduled to have been their opponents. Denia hosted Crevillente and a goal in each half saw them triumph 2-0. Gervaso with a super free kick on the quarter hour mark and Roberto nodding in the second shortly after the break. Nine yellow cards were issued, par for the course in this group! Villarreal C entertained new boys Burriana and somewhat of a shock result, the visitors emerging 6
TERCERA DIVISIĂ“N: Grupo 6 / Day 4 victors by 2-0. It was counter attacking tactics by Burriana in this derby match that won the day and they were pummeled for most of the match, but held firm. Emilio Tauste netted both Burriana goals in 28 and 53 minutes. Last year's 4th played 5th as Alzira looked to put a poor start behind them against thus far undefeated La Nucia. The 500 strong crowd will want to forget this dull, listless affair, only enlivened by a 75th minute brawl that saw considerable pushing and shoving for well nigh on three minutes, before Juan was shown a red. Eight others were admonished including our old pal, Petu. It ended 0-0 with a crashing shot to the crossbar in injury time courtesy of a good save from Flor. Utiel sought a return to joint top by beating visitors Elche Ilicitano whilst Llosa attempted the same at Gandia. Utiel managed the win through a 52nd minute penalty conversion by Cardona, whilst Llosa conceded their first league goals, Canet hitting them both for the home side. Llosa dominated early play and looked confident and capable, but Gandia are well organised and efficient, ultimately deserving their win and looking ominously dangerous as they now enter the top four, one of only four teams yet to taste defeat. The goals were on the board before Llosa lost Santi Villanueva to a straight red, after which their goose was cooked. Eldense hosted pointless Catarroja and played out a goalless draw in a match with numerous chances and much open play. Catarroja enjoyed slightly the better openings and this first point is enough to take them off the bottom on goal difference, leaving Crevillente languishing there. Castellon and Ribarroja completed week 4 matches, sharing the points in a 1-1 stalemate, Marc Trilles equaslising in the 89th minute for the home side, much to the relief of the 1200 strong crowd. Alberto Pomer had opened the scoring in the 49th minute, but a draw was a fair result. Jeff 7
FĂştbol Club Jove EspaĂąol de San Vicente Today's Visitors Jove were only founded in 2004 and made it to the third division in 2006, where they have remained since. They achieved their best ever finishing position last term, ending up in 10th place, just three behind Torry. They had a terrific run of seven wins and a draw between late November and the end of January, as well as finishing the season with a flourish of four wins and a draw from their last five games. They drew 1-1 in this corresponding fixture last season, Petu equalizing for Torry just before half time after Ousmane (who now plays for 2B side Teruel) had given Jove a lead on the quarter hour mark. In the six encounters between the sides in the league at the Vicente Garcia, Torry won the first three, but two 1-1 draws and a Jove 1-3 win, form the last three contest results between the teams. Jove come here today on the back on wins against Acero and Crevillente and a narrow defeat at home to table toppers Novelda. They have yet to break into the group that constitutes the "likely lads" but it is very early days in their history Let's hope it is an enjoyable game today and that Torry can resume winning ways against a side that looks set for a good season. As a teenager he was with Real Madrid, progressing from their juvenile side to their third team before returning to his home club of Cartagena. Spells in Greece and Armenia followed before he returned to Spain and played three season for Caravaca, joining Torry in the summer. Pedro is an efficient central defender, patrolling his area with the minimum of fuss, but maximum effectiveness. He reads the game well and his positional sense is first rate. There are high expectations that his central defensive partnership with Jorge will be the bedrock of many a clean sheet and wins, both home and away. 9
THE TORRY ARMY Proud to Support FC Torrevieja TORRY ARMY NEWS The Torry Army took a coach to the last away game at Novelda and it was two thirds full. If there is sufficient demand, it is the intention to arrange a coach to take supporters to the away games this season which are this side of Valencia – Eldense, Elche Ilicitano, Crevillente, Jove Espanol , Muro and Alzira and also to the away games against teams which play close to the coast – Denia, La Nucia and Gandia and in these cases to make a fuller day of it and spend some leisure time by the Mediterranean sea before going to the game. The next away game is next Sunday 30 September 2012 against Denia. If there are sufficient numbers to make the trip viable there will be a coach going. It will leave mid-morning to allow supporters time to enjoy a few hours on the beachfront of Denia before going to the game. A great way to spend a Sunday, promenading and having a “bite to eat” by the sea, and then watching your favourite football team in Spain play. Match Report: Day 4 FC Torrevieja 0:3 Muro Two up two down Yep, it is terrace house time for Torry with two up, two down after the first four matches. The joy of being the only team with a 100% win record after two matches has been chastened by consecutive losses at Novelda and at home to Muro. Where has it all gone so badly wrong? First port of call must be the absence of Ernesto and Pedro for the Muro game. Pedro is a class act at the back and does everything with great efficiency. He reads the game well and oozes class and confidence. Just his presence adds solidarity at the back and we hope he can keep off the reds and in the side week in week out from now on. It also did not help that Rafa sustained a head injury early on in the Muro clash and had to be replaced, This young left back is a talent, not just defensively as he has a great eye for goal from set pieces, as he has ably demonstrated already. The lack of the talented and creative Ernesto meant that we played far too many long balls and hopeful kicks in to the opposition area, scarcely giving Gasch any chance of being productive. We needed the guile and ingenuity of Ernesto to wreak havoc with visiting defenses. He is able to control the ball wonderfully and then ghost past players who have no idea how to stop him, other than by illegal means. Then his passing and shooting is so accurate that we are in the driving seat and ready to tear defenses apart. . It is not unjust to say that much of our play off hopes rest on his shoulders. Here's hoping he's up for it. Muro did not have their strongest side out at the Vicente Garcia last week, themselves ravaged by injuries and this showed. I did not rate them highly, but nonetheless they were well organised and took their chances very well indeed. I just had to admire their opener as Alex Pascual made the space for the shot, then placed it with magnificent precision into the side of the net and just beyond the reach of Manolo. It was well crafted and well taken and gave them the confidence to go on and win the game. 20
Their second goal just a minute later and on the very stroke of half time was a body blow. Again it was well worked and getting to the byeline always causes panic and trouble for defenses. It did so for us as Muro were sharp and first to the ball for a simple knock in. Simple might have been the final execution, but like most things the simple looking things take great practice and skill. That 2-0 half time deficit looked like a mountain to climb. Torry played better in the second half, with less reliance of long, speculative balls upfield. Gasch was still deprived of the service he and every centre forward needs, but at least Torry were seizing the initiative and creating half chances. Gasch almost got the team right back in it in the opening minute of the half when he broke clear and rounded the keeper at the edge of the box. Javi Lloret just got his fingers to stop forward progress and Gasch was forced wide and the opportunity lost. Luis Carlos struck an inch perfect cross field ball to Inarejos, who cut inside and left three players for dead before trying an audacious chip, which just went over the bar. It was all Torry for an extended period, with Dani getting in on the act and digging one just wide. Then a good move from Cuco Ros saw him bewilder opponents in the box, culminating with Lloret pushing him over to get at the ball. Twenty minutes left to play and a penalty kick to get Torry right back in the picture. Cuco Ros elected to take the kick himself, but blasted it high. That's three missed penalties from three in our two home matches. Simply put, this is terrible. Having forced the second half pace, Jorge got caught just inside his own half and fouled his opponent and thus earned Torry their only caution of the game. This was in the last minute of the game and Torry were punished as the free kick was sent to the right where Mario seemed to impede Sergio before flicking it past Manolo for Muro's third. Game over and best forgotten. Let's hope we put Jove to the sword today!

Coming up next week Next weekend sees the completion of week six games, which should give us our first clues as to which teams are likely to last the course as possible promotion contenders. Then the hard slog into October starts as we get down to seeing who can grind out results, whether they play well or otherwise. There are always pre season "teams to watch" and Torry were very much in that category. The only side to win their first two matches, suggested they would blaze a trail, but a failure to score at Novelda put an early spoke in the wheels. Then the home defeat to a weakened Muro side had many reaching for the strong liquor! However, Novelda are regarded as one of the sides sure to be there or thereabouts and it it always better to lose and beat them, rather than draw twice with them - just as long as we win the return match then! Likewise Muro are strong contenders for the play offs again BUT these are the teams we have to beat so that we are in the top four! The trip to Denia for us next weekend is a "big one". Forced down to our devision in the summer, Denia will be seeking to bounce right back up to 2B and normally has a mean defense, though Acero cracked three past them. They won the 3rd division championship six seasons ago and have held their own in 2B since. This game could tell us a lot about Torry's ability to stay the course.

Acero and Muro once more are seen as teams who will play a big part at the top of the table, but Acero are struggling to hit top form with one win from four. Muro are back in the top four places and will be hard to shift from that group. This season many pundits have been eyeing Eldense as a team to watch. They have a super good looking stadium to make them feel good (which we will see in November) and have supplemented their squad with several interesting signing, including ex Torry defender Diego Meijide. They have an extremely tough opening six match schedule, so it may mean that they will have to come from behind, once they encounter the less fancied sides. After week six I expect to see Gandia and Villareal C emerge from the pack. They have the quality to beat any side on their day and have "soft" fixtures this coming weekend. Once they slip into the top four, both will be hard to dislodge. Gandia has spent half of the last 25 years in 2B, so feel it is their more natural home. They even have a president called Boix, though this one boasts a first name of Jesus!. Last season was a rarity for Alzira - they made the playoffs but failed to get promotion. That is normally not the case and in fact only 13 years ago they were playing in the Segunda! Not bad for a team only founded in 1977. My early doors predictions for the top four play off sides: Gandia, Muro, Denia and Torry! What's your pick? Jeff

Man in the Middle Care to Share? Do you have a funny or entertaining sporting memory you would like to share with fellow fans in the match day programme? We keep hearing that football is a "funny old game", so perhaps you participated in one of these silly clashes, or perhaps were a spectator when something hilarious happened? Maybe you just remember an incident from time gone by that is worth sharing with your fellow sporting friends. If so, then write it on a piece of paper and give to me, or preferably email me (jeff53ref@yahoo.co.uk) if you are online and we will publish your story to share with Torry fans. Something that invariably makes me laugh is a bit of a cruel tale about my very generous and helpful dad. When we lived in East Sussex I refereed at various levels and when my father visited from Northern Ireland, I usually pressed him to "run the line" at one of my games. This was better for me, as otherwise it would have been a substitute or manager doing this task and their neutrality could not always be relied upon. In a bog in Heathfield on a wet and miserable Saturday afternoon in the late eighties, my dad wrapped up in many layers and took the flag with good grace, but much trepidation, especially as he knew from experience that offside or not offside decisions would often result in a flurry of dogs abuse hurled his direction. Luckily he knew I was vicious when it came to dissent, ploughing my way through the mud to put the fear of dismissal into any such miscreant. With hindsight, I make today's multiple card dishing Spanish refs look positively restrained! However, my dad's more worrying concern was when to indicate that the ball was out of play, as the line was erratic and invisible in parts, mainly due to the muddy, if not downright mucky conditions end to end. 28
He would have been better off in Wellingtons, but he had failed to bring them with him on his vacation, so it really was his own fault that he was ill prepared for the job at hand. Nonetheless, I was not going to criticise him, before the game anyway. I would leave that until the drive back home when I would challenge him about his new signals, that I could never find in the Laws of the Game handbook. Midway through the second half, with the rain at his back, I noticed he wasn't as fast at keeping up with the play. "Add an inch to it" I suggested to which he responded by lifting a leg and showing me a stone of mud clinging to his virtually invisible shoe. I think he also made another physical gesture. but he had gloves on and I wasn't sure. On a quick counter attack (well quick for this level of football), I was off like a gazelle in pursuit of the attacker, expecting him to be unrighteously felled by a lumbering defender. As he passed the ball out the wing I quickly looked to the linesman to see if he felt the winger was on or offside. What met my gaze was the most confusing signal I can honestly say I have ever had from an assistant. The flag was twelve feet up in the air and my dear old dad was en route to the muddy deck, belly first. I ask you, is that an offside indication or what? We played on and a winning goal was the net result, but not before a few burly chopper experts had formed a small arc around my dad, enquiring as to why he had not flagged for offside! I was glad my father was still chewing mud and not seeing or hearing clearly, as I rather suspected he might have lost my flag for good with a demonstrative answer! I got the Neanderthals away from the touchline and barely stifled a guffaw as I saw what was now a mud drenched scarecrow of a linesman, where once my proud father had stood. Fair play to the good old soul. He finished the game, refused the offer of a shower on the grounds he didn't want to frighten the horses, then rifled through my bag for a hip flask whilst I was getting my match fee. Luckily I had put the dosh in my zipped pocket by the time I met him at the car, else he might have been looking a share, as he did mumble something about dry cleaning. I ignored it, there was no way dry cleaning was going to help those clothes! 29
