What is CBD (Cannabidoil) CBD (Cannabidoil) is a key chemical component (molecule) of the Hemp plant (Cannabis Sativa) being a member of the Cannabis plant family but having very low levels of THC (Tetrahyda). History of Hemp Hemp is an ancient plant with carbon dating suggesting that the use of wild Hemp dates back to 8000BC. In the 16th century Henry VIII encouraged farms to grow Hemp to provide materials for the British navy. Rigging, sails, rope etc. were made from Hemp. Hemp paper was used for maps and ship's logs. In America, by the early 18th century, a farmer could be sentenced in Court, if they weren’t growing Hemp on their land. An 1850 US census documented approx. 8400 Hemp plantations of at least 2,000 acres each. Following the Industrial Revolution and beyond, factories could produce more than 1.000 lbs of Hemp per hour. Add to this the car revolution, starting with the invention of the diesel engine in 1896 by Rudolph Diesel, Diesel designed his engine so that it could possibly be run on a variety of biofuels. In 1941,Henry Ford not only designed a car that had its body made from Hemp but it was also fuelled by Hemp derived product. He also operated a successful biofuel conversion plant providing Hemp fuel. Ford engineers also extracted methanol, charcoal fuel, tar, pitch, ethyl acetate and creosote, Many of the basic ingredients for modern industry which are now supplied almost exclusively by oil related industries.
The Hemp Threat By the 1930’s Hemp was seen as a major threat by competing industries (timber and petrochemical to name but a few) and there was also a new name on the scene Harry Anslinger (1st Commissioner of Federal Bureau of Narcotics), who was looking to make a name for himself. He needed more than Heroin and Cocaine to ensure his government department's growth and success following the end of alcohol prohibition. So he begain a smear campaign of not only Marijuana but also added Hemp into the campaign as they are both members of the Cannabis family. The film ‘Reefer Madness’ was the final nail in Hemp's coffin. American congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937 making Hemp cultivation nearly impossible for American farmers.
Anslinger also made it his mission to spread anti Cannabis legislation around the world. Using the new technology of radio and television, the combination of smear campaigns and the Marijuana tax act successfully removed Hemp from industry and the benefits of CBD from the general population. It may seem ironic that 81 years later, the rise in information availability and technology has brought Hemp and the benefits of CBD to the front of peoples' awareness
So what is CBD ? There are two main groups of molecules with bioactive properties found in hemp. These are terpenes and cannabinoids - CBD being a molecule of the latter. Cannabinoids are compounds that can influence the function of the human nervous system. Hemp contains a high level of Cannabidiol or CBD. CBD has been seen to have many therapeutic applications including but not confined to anti-inflammatory and relaxation properties. Unlike its infamous cousin THC, CBD does not give a psychoactive effect and is not addictive. How does it work ? The human nervous system contains a large number of receptors. Receptors are like mobile telephone masts transmitting signals. But if a mobile mast accepts an electromagnetic wave as a signal, receptors use specific molecules to transmit messages. One of the receptor systems is the so-called endocannabinoid system (ECS). ECS receptors are located in the human brain and in the peripheral nervous system – spinal cord and nerves. In the brain, the receptors reside in areas responsible for perception, concentration, memory and movement. That’s why the ECS is involved in the regulation of many physiological processes including the feeling of pain, mood, and appetite. Interestingly, the ECS is also a part of in neural system response to physical excise. “Runner's high” is caused by ECS action.
The ECS receptors are CB1 and CB2, 5-HT1A, Ο, and δ. The receptors bind cannabinoid-like molecules produced by the nervous system, endorphins. One of the endorphin molecules transmitting signals in the ECS is 2Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). It binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors. Cannabidiol, CBD, also bind to these receptors and replicates the effects of 2-AG. CBD binds to the same receptors as psychoactive THC but has an opposite effect. If THC gets your nervous system into overdrive CBD makes it slow down. In research, CBD has shown anti-spasmodic, antipsychotic, anti-convulsive, and neuroprotective properties. Therefore, using CBD containing oil is a good way of muscle and general relaxation. CBD also alleviates everyday stress and makes the nervous system more resilient.

The company has been lauded by Olivia Wilde, Jessica Seinfeld, Busy Philipps, Stacy London and more. “Recently I did a play on Broadway for six months, and my body was wrecked,” Wilde told the New York Times earlier this month. “My neck was really tight. The CBD has relaxing benefits, and the idea is to avoid using too many painkillers.” London wrote on social media about not having to depend on medication as she recovered from spinal surgery last year.
“I am not a fan of prescription painkillers though they were kinda unavoidable after spine surgery,” she wrote. “I am so sensitive to medication the side effects were awful. Parents' emotional pleas grant CBD use for autism treatment By Tommie Clark, KCCI Posted: Sat 4:35 PM, Dec 15, 2018 DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) -- The Iowa Board of Medicine voted on Friday to add autism to the list of medical conditions that can be treated with cannabidiol thanks in part to a dedicated Iowa mother. Lindsay Gaunt said she filed a petition to get autism added to the list of debilitating diseases eligible to be treated with medical marijuana in Iowa to give her 6-year-old daughter, Obreigh, a better life. Gaunt said Obreigh is nonverbal and cannot tell her parents how she's feeling. Instead, she shows them. "It's heartbreaking," said Gaunt. "Especially when they're nonverbal and they can't tell you what's wrong." Gaunt said that when Obreigh is upset, she bangs her head, cries or worse when she takes her medication. "She stuck all four fingers down her throat," Gaunt said. "She made herself throw up. I just lost it as a parent and I thought, 'I cannot do this to my kid and I can't be the only one who's going through this.'" The Autism Research Institute says that CBD oil alleviates the symptoms such as anxiety and aggression in children with autism. Mary Roberts, an Iowa mother of two children with autism, said making CBD oil available could change her family's lives.
"To have the opportunity to have this medication as an option is something that would be absolutely fantastic for families like mine," Roberts said. In the end, the board approved an amendment that will make patients with a certain form of severe autism, as well as ulcerative colitis, eligible for CBD oil usage. When the board announced its decision, Gaunt said she couldn't help but cry tears of joy.

A 60- to 90-day rule-making process will now start to get the conditions onto the list of debilitating conditions. At the meeting, the Cannabidiol Board also brought forward a draft rule to add inhaled forms, like vaporizing, to approved methods of taking medical cannabis in Iowa. A vote of 5-3 means it will move forward to the next step toward becoming legal.

Can I get a prescription for medical cannabis? Very few people in England are likely to get a prescription for medical cannabis. Currently, it is only likely to be prescribed for the following conditions: children and adults with rare, severe forms of epilepsy adults with vomiting or nausea caused by chemotherapy And it would only be considered when other treatments weren't suitable or hadn't helped. Epidiolex for children and adults with epilepsy Epidiolex is a highly purified liquid containing CBD (cannabidiol). CBD is a chemical substance found in cannabis that has medical benefits.
It won't get you high, because it doesn't contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the chemical in cannabis that makes you high. Epidiolex is not yet licensed in the UK but is currently going through the licensing system. In the meantime, the unlicensed medication can be prescribed for patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome (both rare forms of epilepsy). Long-term pain There is some evidence medical cannabis can help certain types of pain, though this evidence is not yet strong enough to recommend it for pain relief. What about products available to buy? Some cannabis-based products are available to buy over the internet without a prescription. Health stores sell certain types of "pure CBD". However, there's no guarantee these products will be of good quality. And they tend to only contain very small amounts of CBD, so it's not clear what effect they would have. Is medical cannabis safe? "Pure" products that only contain CBD, such as Epidiolex, do not carry these unknown risks linked with THC. We tried everything: We gave him plenty of physical exercise, worked on a variety of mental training tactics, set up daily routines, and showered him with treats. The day care staff, who likely were as exasperated as we felt, suggested CBD oil as a next step, and our veterinarian agreed. He still dislikes the coffee grinder and would prefer never to be left alone, but he can direct his attention to a task for longer and is content to spend most evenings cuddling rather than bouncing off walls. The US Farm Bill passed on Wednesday legalizes hemp, a plant that's roughly identical to marijuana and is a key source of highly
touted wellness ingredient CBD. The bill defines hemp as an agricultural product for the first time and amends a major drug law that hadn't been altered in 50 years. Experts said the shift could spike interest in CBD, which is also the active ingredient in the first cannabis-based medicine to gain federal approval in the US. Despite its hazy legal status, CBD already makes up a roughly $1 billion industry. This week, a plant that's nearly identical to marijuana is set to become legal to grow in the US. Thanks to the US Farm Bill, which the House passed on Wednesday in a 369 to 47 vote, American farmers will be able to plant and harvest hemp, a strain of the same plant species from which marijuana originates. The bill passed the Senate Tuesday in an 87 to 13 vote, and President Donald Trump has indicated his support.
Hemp legalization has been a longtime goal of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, who believes it can help replace tobacco as a key crop for his state's farmers. The move alters the language of a major drug law that had previously remained unchanged for half a century and loosely defined hemp alongside marijuana as a controlled substance. The new bill exempts hemp from that law and defines it as an agricultural product.

That means farmers and researchers of hemp now get some of the same benefits as farmers and researchers of other crops, like the ability to apply for insurance and federal grants. "The era of hemp prohibition is over," Jonathan Miller, legal counsel for a lobbying coalition of over 60 hemp companies called the US Hemp Roundtable, told Business Insider. That's a key change for scientists, many of whom say previous drug laws deterred them from studying hemp because it was regulated like marijuana. The bill may also boost interest in a nascent but booming $1 billion industry based on a component of the cannabis plant called CBD, which has been touted for a variety of health and wellness claims. CBD is popping up in more and more products, from coffee and tea to supplements and beer. But because CBD can be sourced from both marijuana and hemp plants, its legal status, set by the Drug Enforcement Administration, remains somewhat hazy. CBD from marijuana, just like marijuana as a whole, remains illegal. But now that hemp is legal, CBD from hemp may be legal, too.
"The devil is in the details, and we don't know yet how the DEA will act to implement the law," Daniele Piomelli, the director of the University of California at Irvine Center for the Study of Cannabis and a professor of neuroscience and pharmacology, told Business Insider. The DEA, which controls the scheduling of substances, has not said how it will respond to the new bill. As it stands, so long as a CBD product is "intended for human consumption," it remains a Schedule 1 drug, DEA spokesperson Katherine Pfaff told Business Insider on Tuesday. She said she couldn't comment on how the bill might affect the DEA's approach. Both contain THC and CBD. But each plant is its own unique strain of cannabis. Until recently, hemp was bred almost entirely for industrial uses like manufacturing. As a result, hemp plants today have very low amounts of THC, the psychoactive chemical responsible for marijuana's high. Instead, hemp plants are often higher in CBD, or cannabidiol, which is also found in marijuana. CBD is now thought to be responsible for several of cannabis' therapeutic effects. For example, marijuana-derived CBD is the active ingredient in Epidiolex, a syrup that is the first cannabis-based drug to gain US government approval for medical use. The government approved the drug over the summer. The drug treats two rare forms of childhood epilepsy. One thing that is clear from the new bill is that commerce involving hemp is now in the clear. Federally insured banks, for example, have the green light for the first time to work with industrial hemp producers.
From A to CBD: cannabis is showing up in everything Because CBD can come from either marijuana or hemp plants, it is unclear whether or not hemp-derived CBD products are now legal. Previously, thousands of manufacturers and entrepreneurs glommed onto the CBD wellness trend By Chloe/Leslie Kirchoff with the awareness that CBD products existed in a legal gray zone. Part of the reason for this was that there was no specific language in the DEA's main drug law, called the Controlled Substances Act, that used the word "hemp." Thanks to that fuzziness, you could find everything from CBD lattes in New York to CBD teas at grocery stores across the country. But now that hemp is legal, some experts expect the trend to really take off. "The passing of the farm bill will most certainly open up the marketplace for hemp products, specifically hemp extracts that are high in CBD," Josh Hendrix, the director of domestic product business development for cannabis company CV Sciences, told Business Insider. "It will provide a higher comfort level for retailers and consumers and will lead to more investment and opportunity in the industry as it will continue to see rapid expansion." Still, other experts - particularly scientists - have expressed concern that while the bill itself is a step in the right direction, what remains to be seen is how the DEA will respond to it. Until the DEA decides to change the status of CBD, researchers can't expect too many changes to their current work.

Roughly seven out of 10 items had different levels of CBD than what was written on the label. Of all of the items tested, roughly half had more CBD than was indicated; a quarter had less. And 18 of the samples tested positive for THC, despite it not being listed on the label. "I've seen a lot of dirty CBD manufacturing facilities," Kelvin Harrylall, the CEO of a company called the CBD Palace that audits CBD companies and creates a list of vendors it deems safe for customers, told Business Insider in June. "It's tough to know what you're getting." The farm bill itself won't directly affect product safety. But experts believe that as these laws move toward legalization and an increased role for regulators, the companies that abide by strict manufacturing conditions will come out on top, while those who run fast and loose with rules will suffer. "I believe if you are a CBD manufacturer and you can say that you're making a quality product ... then you have nothing to worry about," Harrylall said. A touch of Reefer Madness By Keith Nicol Reefer Madness is considered to be a cult classic and one of the best examples of a midnight movie. It was also one of the classic films discussed at my Film School and part of our studies. Its fans enjoy the film for the same unintentionally campy production values that made it a hit in the 1970s. The Los Angeles Times claimed that Reefer Madness was the first film that a generation embraced as "the worst." Leonard Maltin has called it "the granddaddy of all 'Worst' movies." Las Vegas CityLife named it the "worst ever" runner-up to Plan 9 from Outer Space, and AMC described it as "one of the worst movies ever made." The film holds a 46% approval rating on aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
According to an article in Wikipedia, in 1936 or 1938, the low budget film: 'Tell Your Children' was financed and made by a church group and intended to be shown to parents as a morality tale attempting to teach them about the dangers of cannabis use. It was originally produced by George Hirliman; however sometime after the film was made, it was purchased by exploitation filmmaker Dwain Esper, who inserted salacious shots (into the film, for the shock effect). In 1938 or 1939, Esper began distributing it on the exploitation circuit where it was originally released in at least four territories, each with their own title for the film: the first territory to screen it was the South, where it went by Tell Your Children: West of Denver, Colorado, the film was generally known as Doped Youth (1940): In New England, it was known as Reefer Madness (1940 or 1947), while in the Pennsylvania/West Virginia territory it was called The Burning Question (1940). The film was then screened all over the country during the 1940s under these various titles and Albert Dezel of Detroit eventually bought all rights in 1951 for use in roadshow screenings throughout the 1950s. Such educationexploitation films were common in the years following adoption of the stricter version of the Production Code in
1934. Other films included Esper's own earlier Marihuana (1936) and Elmer Clifton's Assassin of Youth (1937) and the subject of cannabis was particularly popular in the hysteria surrounding Anslinger's 1937 Marihuana Tax Act. The concept of after-market films in film distribution had not yet been developed, especially for films that existed outside the confines of the studio system, and were therefore considered "forbidden fruit." In May 2018, Angry Demon Productions out of Detroit, MI, in collaboration with LegacyVerse Productions from Sandusky, OH, started filming a low-budget Independent Film remake under the original working title 'Tell Your Children'. While most of the film has been modernized a bit through cell phones and laptops instead of desk rotary phones & filing cabinets (as examples), this remake still has about 75% scene for scene and use of original dialog with deliberate liberal use of overacting and campy humor .
