Cinema Tourism Comes to Cuenca

by Bob Yareham

Cinema Tourism (Set-Jetting) is a reality, and you only have to do the Math to realise that. Following the release of Out of Africa, the number of visitors to Kenya increased by 500%, while visitors to the Wallace Monument rose by 300% following the release of Braveheart. The Crown Hotel, Amersham, had to put up the ‘No Vacancies’ sign for three years following the hot, steamy scenes between Hugh Grant and Andy McDowell filmed there during Four Weddings and a Funeral. And the list goes on. Spain has been slow to follow the trend, which is surprising considering that it is the non-English speaking country with most English language films ever shot; over 700 and still counting. From Valencia I have been trying to do something about that for years, encouraging Town Halls and provincial governments to develop this rewarding form of tourism. My book ‘Movies Made in Spain’ identifies the locations of 720 films and mini-series filmed partly or wholly in Spain and shot in English. There isn’t a country in the world (and one or two planets) that haven’t been represented by Spanish scenery. But it’s been an uphill task; the authorities in Valencia, for example, have done nothing to take advantage of the filming of Tomorrowland with George Clooney and Hugh Laurie at the City of Arts and Sciences; the authorities at Trebuena, Cádiz tore down the Japanese POW camp built there by Steven Spielberg for Empire of the Sun, and with a few glorious exceptions, the making of all these films is not being harnessed by tourism entities in order to attract new visitors. Putting my money where my mouth is, a colleague, Jaume Palau, a Catalan expert in tourism, who is the author of books about the locations of James Bond films (many of them in Spain) and Game of Thrones, and I are organising an event in Cuenca in an attempt to encourage a private-public cinema weekend (or week), visiting

the main locations in that province, which has witnessed filming by Richard Lester, Sergio Leone, Stanley Kramer, Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, “Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan,” Charlton Heston, Benicio del Toro, Tim Robbins, Robert de Niro, Oliver Reed, Michael York and Geraldine Chaplin, to name but a few.

Cuenca is an enchanting province, but not one that is saturated by tourists, and apart from the spectacular old town, perched on a hill, it has three major international filming locations; the castle of Belmonte, the monastery of Uclés and the bizarre, geological rock formations of La Ciudad Encantada and Los Callejones de Las Majadas. Local politicians, tourist organisations, film producers, tour operators, hotel and restaurant owners and other potential merchandising manufacturers have started signing up for the event, to be held on February 4th 2017 at the Parador Nacional de Cuenca (where Pierce Brosnan stayed while filming The World is not Enough). It will be a round table meeting, with presentations from experts in cinema history, tourism, local monuments and products, from which it is hoped to go beyond talking and produce a pilot tour to tap into the unexploited market for cinema tourism.

If the project is a success, we hope that the idea will spread to other provinces, especially to places where few tourists have gone before, but where the stars have been seen, such as Atienza in Guadalajara, where Katherine Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave made The Trojan Women, or Artajona, Navarra, where Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn shot Robin and Marian. The resulting tour, a unique experience combining films, locations, local gastronomy and products and varied forms of entertainment, could take place in Spanish or in English (or both) depending on the demand. It will probably happen in spring 2017. Participation in the event on February 4th is free and open to anyone who is

interested. If you think you might like to participate in the event or the resulting tour, send an e mail so that you can be put on the mailing list to bobyareham@gmail.com. Who knows, perhaps we can organise a trip just for Costa Blanca residents or a special coach for CoastRider readers. About Bob Yareham Bob Yareham is the author of ‘Movies Made in Spain’ the story of 720 English language films shot in Spain. Available in paper or as an e-book: http://www.obrapropia.com/Obras/1664/MOVIESMADE-IN-SPAIN. His latest book Movies Made in Spain was published on June 14th, 2016 and represents the climax of a never ending story of 10 years work. The book tells the story of over 700 (720 actually) English language films made in Spain since the 1920s, culminating with Brad Pitt’s recent filming in The Canary Islands. The purpose of the book is to encourage cinema tourism in Spain and to help people find the locations of all those films. Bob Yareham has taught English and History and written in Valencia since 1981. The author has also devised an activity for educational institutions, through which students can learn about the rich history of the international cinema industry in Spain. He has also been running an activity in collaboration with Valencia’s L’Iber Museum, the largest collection of toy soldiers in the world, called Hollywood & History for Valencian school students. Here are some of the questions that the book will answer: In which small village in Guadalajara did Katherine Hepburn spend a summer making a film about Troy? Where did Steven Spielberg build his prisoner of war camp in Spain for ‘Empire of the Sun’? Which famous British actor tried to steal some jewels from the Spanish royal family’s summer palace in Majorca in 1969? Which Spanish city has a cinema called ‘Lara’ because ‘Doctor Zhivago’ was made there? Which village in the province of Granada has a monument to the Marx Brothers, and why? For James Bond fans out there, locations used in Spain for The World Is Not Enough included the dramatic, action-packed opening scenes of the pre-title sequence take place in the penthouse office of a Swiss bank situated on the banks of the Nervion River in Bilbao, overlooking the new Guggenheim Art Gallery. The Bardenas Reales, near Tudela, was the setting for sequences above the underground nuclear test facility, supposedly in Kazakhstan, and the vast construction site and pipeline in the shadow of the Caucasus Mountains were filmed in Los Callejones, Las Majadas, near Cuenca.

Arab Influence in Spanish food It really isn't possible to speak about Spanish food or the Mediterranean diet without noting the importance of the rich legacy of Al-Andalus gastronomy. Much of the current cuisine of the Iberian country is heir of the Muslim tradition, an empire that occupied up to 70% of the country at some point. This occupation extended from 711 to 1492, the year that Spain was unified and America was discovered. Al-Andalus gastronomy is much reflected in the Mediterranean diet, with some variations of course, such as the consumption of pork. This inheritance is specially marked in Andalusia, where gazpachos and other cold soups are originally from, but this influence is also reflected in other areas such as Alicante (Valencia) where a typical nougat is made, Murcia, Almeria and many more regions. Just like in any other gastronomy, different food was consumed according to social class, cities and rural areas. The preparation methods varied as well. The tradition of AlAndalus gastronomy is very rich and varied. They had less prohibitions than Jews, in fact mainly pork and fermented drinks were forbidden, however this precept was not always respected or followed 100% in Muslim Spain. The Arab tradition in Spain also contributed to the Spanish vocabulary. If you study Spanish in Spain you will learn all about this.

The higher classes consumed little or no fish and shellfish. There was no religious prohibition related to products from the sea, but rather it was the doctors that discouraged them from the kitchens, arguing that it's pestilent odour and strong taste was not healthy. Nowadays fried fish is very common in the gastronomy of the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. However the Al-andalus gastronomy of the more humble classes, specially those who lived near the coasts ate plenty of fish; raw, fried or salted, the most common were sardines and tuna. In fact, one of the main cookery techniques that the Arabs brought to Spain was pickling, especially fish in vinegar solutions. Today, you will find that pickled anchovies and sardines are commonly eaten as a tapa when served on a piece of bread. There are many products that the Arabs introduced in the Iberian peninsula: eggplant, spinach, sugar cane, rice, apricots and citric among others. It's true that olives have been

Halve half the tomatoes, leaving the rest whole, then add to the pan with the wine. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, or until thickened. cultivated in Spain from pre historic times, but the olive culture increased considerably under the Al-Andalus empire. The introduction of irrigation ditches, cisterns and draining systems contributed largely to it. But it wasn't only the olive production that increased with these improvements, but all kinds of crops. The meats that the Arabs preferred were lamb and poultry; basically with little grease. They would be marinated overnight in milk or vinegar, seasoned with vegetables such as onion, garlic, fennel and olives and spiced with cinnamon and coriander. Overall, the Al-Andalus diet was very healthy, especially compared to those typical from other

The Moors brought heaps of technology to the Iberian peninsular, but not all of them were for food. It is thanks to the Moors that the Spanish learnt how to use stills for distilling alcohol. The Moors didn't drink alcohol for religious purposes so they have developed these stills to create alcohols for medicinal purposes instead, as well as to produce perfumes. However, the Spanish used them to make alcohols that were able to be drunk such as licor de orujo, which is made from grape must. Other areas of the Spanish gastronomy that were affected by the Moors include desserts. The Moors brought sugar-cane to Spain and taught the Spanish how to refine it. This helped to revolutionise Spanish cakes and other sweets which has generally been made in a similar fashion to bread and then sweetened with honey. Other desserts influenced by the Moorish culture include arrope, a syrup which is used in a similar way to marmalade.

The publication’s 2016 Readers’ Choice Awards included input from more than 300,000 readers, who cast votes for more than 7,000+ hotels, 500 cruise ships, 600+ cities and 200+ islands, resulting in a preeminent list of more than 1,400 of the world’s best travel experiences. “To again be recognized as the world’s best by an audience as astute and selective as Condé Nast Traveler’s subscribers is high praise, and validation that our commitment to not only meeting, but exceeding, guests’ wishes and expectations continues to be invaluable,” says Crystal CEO and president, Edie Rodriguez. “Since our first sailing more than 25 years ago, we have set a new standard of luxury and excellence for selective travellers, and we are proud and honored that this standard has surpassed other ‘one hit wonders’ in the travel industry.” The Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards are the longest-running and most prestigious recognition of excellence in the travel industry and are commonly known as “the best of the best of travel.” Under Editor in Chief Pilar Guzmán, the Readers’ Choice Awards have become more selective and specific to the passions that inspire today’s travellers.

Crystal’s score of 92.24 topped the list of 12 finalist cruise lines in its category, with a margin of 4.8 – the highest in Crystal’s 23 years of winning the award and among the ocean ship categories this year. Criteria voted on included accommodations, service, dining, activities, design and value. Spanish hoteliers fight back against rise in false holiday sickness claims Spanish hoteliers are taking action to fight a sharp rise in fraudulent holiday sickness claims from British holidaymakers. Hoteliers from Benidorm, the Costa Blanca and Valencia say they have decided to take a stand against a growing compensation culture in the UK which, they claim, has prompted a huge increase in claims this summer. They claim the majority of cases are fraudulent and are not backed up with evidence. They are putting the blame on the growing number of specialist claims management companies which are increasingly targeting Brits abroad. These companies are using aggressive sales tactics, including cold calling, recruiting resort-based salespeople, and even dressing up as

tour operators at hotels to reel in customers, hoteliers claim. The problem, they say, is costing the Spanish hotel industry over €60 million a year. "We feel the British complaints procedure, which allows claims to be processed when there is no evidence of truth, creates a grossly unfair and disproportionate system," said Nuria Montes, general secretary from HOSBEC which represents the resorts' hoteliers. "It unreasonably inflates the cost for the hotelier by adding fat profits for lawyer firms who bill for 90% of the total amount of the claim, while only 10% of the amount is allocated to offsetting the alleged damages to the tourist. This system is completely contrary to the Spanish one, whereby the claimant must prove the accuracy of what they are claiming." She said the problems are unique to the UK market, with guests from other popular inbound countries such as Belgium, Holland and Portugal, and even the British direct sale market, having no grounds for complaint. She said the problem is only for bookings made via tour operator partners under the EU Travel Package Directive 2015. "This is yet another example of how the legal and regulated accommodation sector is the

victim of such practices, whereas online booking platforms are operating 'soundly' without being subject to any similar mass complaint campaigns," she said. Spanish hoteliers are urging ABTA and major UK tour operators to lobby the Government to radically overhaul the claims system, but in the meantime they are introducing short term measures. Hotels will be using traceability systems for guests so they can continuously track their meals and drinks consumption and use of dining areas and restaurants. "These systems will allow hotels to check whether consumption patterns are compatible with the causes alleged in the complaint form, which mostly have to do with gastrointestinal illnesses," it said. They will also ensure guests are told that fraudulent claims are illegal and could result in a prison sentence. ABTA said its members have reported a significant rise in the number of gastric illness claims being made by holidaymakers. It also blamed the aggressive sales practices of some claims management companies. It said it will be meeting with the Ministry of Justice, which regulates claims management activities, to highlight concerns and to ensure it takes action to safeguard the system from fraudulent claims.

Cultural Society Casino of Torrevieja On New Year's Day 2017, one of Torrevieja's classic attractions, The Casino, will celebrate its 150 anniversary. While the connotation of the word 'Casino' is of a gambling attraction, in Spain the first casinos were places for social activities and public rooms of music and dance. The same format appeared in England in the eighteenth century, expanding its focus in the mid nineteenth century, becoming a club and then becoming a place more associated with fun with gambling. One of the earliest and most popular was in Belgium in Liéja, on a site called Redoute, adding games in their program in 1763. Naturally these sites were also at other places but we consider Redoute as the first casino. Prime Minister, Canovas del Castillo. The Casino was becoming the meeting place of the local bourgeoisie, most of the rich shipowners and merchants who

A couple of hundred yards to the south of the Casino you will find Eras De La Sal hidden in plain sight behind a couple of huge wooden doors, and close to the Habaneras Fountain. Eras de la Sal is a fine example of Spanish industrial architecture from the 18th century. It served as a storehouse and wharf for salt from 1777 until 1958. Now it has become one of the most authentic landmarks in Torrevieja and is a prime example of the restoration project that has brought back its former splendour, reminding us of the hard work of so many generations of “Torrevejenses”. Inside we

should highlight the recovery of the so-called “Caballete", the wooden platform from which the salt was loaded on ships after being brought from the factory next to the lagoon of Torrevieja on trolleys.

It is hoped that in the near future the Museum of Sea and Salt will have its permanent location in this area. This structure, which rotted away at the beginning of the 70s, has been rebuilt as a true replica using very sim-

Spain, A Location For Game Of Thrones

Season after season ‘The Lannisters always pay their debts.’ Many people on reading these words will already have a good idea of what we're talking about. Yes, one of the most famous series in recent years, ‘Game of Thrones.’ For the uninitiated, ‘Game of Thrones’ is a story set in an imaginary continent where several royal houses vie for power by means of intrigue and betrayal. This successful series has filmed many locations around the world, including Spain. We encourage you to watch this video about the sixth season of ‘Game of Thrones’ with images from the shooting in Girona, Bardenas Reales de Navarra, the Castle of Zafra (in Guadalajara), Peñíscola and Almería. Sixth season: In the kingdoms of the north Fans of the medieval fantasy, drama and adventures featured in this televised adaptation of the novel ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R. R. Martin will be pleased to hear that in the sixth season there are several Spanish locations that receive “visits” from its main characters. These include: Gerona (Catalonia). This was the first city chosen by the American cable channel HBO as a location for the sixth season of Game of Thrones. The action takes place in the cathedral, the Jewish Quarter and the Arab Baths. Also in Catalonia, the Castle of Santa Florentina (in Canet de Mar, Barcelona) has been chosen to film some of the battle scenes in the season’s final episodes. It was chosen because of its resemblance to one the main kingdoms, which, incidentally, is now being seen for the first time in the saga. Bardenas Reales Natural Park (Navarre), particularly known for its striking desert beauty and rock formations, has also been selected as a lo-

cation for the series. Its atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for Queen Daenerys Targaryen as she rides through these lands on horseback. But that’s not all; the Castle of Zafra (Guadalajara), known as the fortress of “Spanish Siberia”, has also been selected to appear in the series. Locals claim that series directors took advantage of the shoot to enjoy the area with their families and friends, impressed as they were by its natural beauty. Its exterior will be a location for some of the most surprising episodes of the long-awaited sixth season.

site by the UNESCO and is one of the oldest active palaces in the world. It has been used by a number of cultures since the 11th century, and now it has even played a role in the world of fiction. If you decide to come and see for yourself, remember that in addition to normal visits you can also enjoy dramatized visits by night. Osuna is a little over 80 kilometres from Seville. Strolling around this ducal town with centuries of antiquity and seeing its white houses, palaces, bullring, university and collegiate church is a real delight. Some of these buildings served as locations for the series. For example, the bullring in Osuna was the setting for the incredible scenes of the fights presided by Daenerys Targaryen in Meereen.

Game of Thrones producers were wowed not only by Zafra but also by the Castle of Peñíscola (Valencia), which will be used for landscape shots in the kingdom of Dorne. Key patents related to 3D printing technology are going to expire in this year, thus giving rise to explosive demand, lower prices and a larger scope for technology betterment.

Geographically U.S. contributes to the majority of the materials market share and consumer materials like Plastics are expected to develop more in this region in the near future as we notice the trend of increasing consumer 3D printers year by year. Germany is the major industrial hub and its materials revenue is mainly because of metal powders. Countries in APAC like China, India and Japan have at present relatively smaller market but are expected to grow at the high CAGR than America and Europe. In short, 3D printing materials market is growing more rapidly than the 3D printers market as it is not a one-time investment which is in case of 3D printers as the printers needs to be refilled regularly and its demand increases based on the number of 3D printers in the market.

Song Facts: Good Vibrations Let's take you back half a century this day, October 22nd 1966, and an all time classic: Good Vibrations: On this day back in 1966, The Beach Boys ‘Good Vibrations’ made its debut on the US singles chart. Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, the track was recorded over a period of six weeks in four different Los Angeles studios, at a cost of over $16,000. The recording engineer would later say that the last take sounded exactly like the first, six months earlier. The record would reach No.1 on the US charts in December 1966. Brian Wilson told Rolling Stone magazine: "My mother used to tell me about vibrations. I didn't really understand too much of what she meant when I was a boy. It scared me, the word 'vibrations' - to think that invisible feelings existed. She also told me about dogs that would bark at some people, but wouldn't bark at others, and so it came to pass that we talked about good vibrations." Brian Wilson called this song a "Pocket Symphony," and experimented with it over the course of 17 recording sessions. At the time, it was the most expensive pop song ever recorded, costing about $50,000 to make.

Brian Wilson worked on this obsessively. At the time, he stayed home and wrote music while the rest of the band toured. Wilson was just starting a very bizarre phase of his life where he would spend long periods in bed and work in a sandbox. During this period, many considered him a genius because of the groundbreaking songs and recording techniques he came up with. This was recorded over a two-month period using top Los Angeles session musicians - the Beach Boys didn't play any instruments on the track. About 90 hours of studio time and 70 hours of tape were used, and at least 12 musicians played on the sessions. It's hard to know whose performances ended up on the record, but some of the musicians involved were Glen Campbell (lead guitar), Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Knechtel (organ) and Al de Lory (piano). Brian Wilson played bass when the Beach Boys went on the road, but he brought in Carol Kaye to play bass guitar and Lyle Ritz to play upright bass on these sessions. Kaye recalls, "He did the very first take on that with Ray Pohlman at Goldstar and scrapped that. And the other 12 dates I'm playing

on - that's 36 hours - he did not change that bass part all during that time. He changed all the rest of the music, he didn't change the bass part. This is what he wrote. It was both bass players at that point - I'm playing the upper part and Lyle's playing the lower part. If you listen to jazz, that's the feel that he wrote."

found an inventor named Paul Tanner who'd been a trombonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra between 1938-42. Tanner had developed a similar device with Bob Whitsell called an electrotheremin, which unlike a regular theremin, had no antennas. Tanner was brought in to play the device on the recording.

Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love wrote the lyrics for this song, which said were "basically a flowery poem." For the time, the music of 'Good Vibrations,' was so unique and psychedelic in itself. Just the instrumental part of it alone was such a departure from what we have done, like 'Surfin' USA' and 'California Girls' and 'I Get Around' and 'Fun, Fun, Fun,' all of which I had a hand in writing. I wanted to do something that captured this feeling of the track and the times, but also could relate to people. Because I thought that the music was such a departure that who knows how well it would relate to Beach Boys fans at that time.

According to Wilson, Capitol Records didn't want to release this as a single because they thought it was too long at 3:35. He pleaded with them to put it out, and felt vindicated when it shot to the top of the charts.

The unusual, high-pitched sound in this song was produced using an electro-theremin, which produces a similar sound to a traditional theremin, an instrument that uses electric current to produce sound (you don't touch a theremin to play it, but move your hand across the electric field). The theremin was invented in 1919, but was very hard to play, and ended up being used mostly as a sound effects device. Brian Wilson was familiar with the instrument, as it was used to create eerie sounds in low budget horror movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still and It Came from Outer Space. When he put cellos on "Good Vibrations," he envisioned an unusual high frequency sound to go along with them, and he thought of the instrument. Wilson couldn't track down a real theremin, but

This was the beginning of what was going to be an album called Smile. Wilson recorded the album in about 50 sessions, but it was never released. Considered a "lost album," Wilson finally finished it in 2004. When he played the album on tour that year, "Good Vibrations" got a rousing response. This was the last US #1 hit for The Beach Boys until "Kokomo" went to #1 22 years later, setting the record for longest gap between #1 hits on the Hot 100. This record was broken by Cher when "Believe" hit #1 in 1999, 25 years after her previous chart-topper, Brian Wilson was the only songwriter credited on this track until a 1994 lawsuit awarded Mike Love composer credit for his contributions to the lyrics on this and 34 other Beach Boys songs. Love maintains that Murry Wilson (Brian's father), handled the publishing details and screwed him out of the songwriting credits.

Live and Enjoy Time Concord car watch Who doesn't have a need for speed? Strikingly reminiscent of the awesome designs and fascinating engines that distinguish iconic luxury cars, Concord launches a magnificent new iteration of its powerfully masculine 47mm diameter C1 Chronograph in luxurious and rare rose gold with racy black ceramic details. Drawing a proud parallel with the aesthetics and high-tech design of the supreme automobiles from which it takes its inspiration, the C1 Chronograph Gold's

trademark octagonal counters gleam richly from the depths of a dial made of deep black carbon fiber - a material prized in car construction for its lightweight, strong and resilient characteristics. The association is further extended by the black ceramic octagonal sub-bezel, dial accents and chronograph pushers which evoke the ceramic brakes on racing cars. Ray's Rant: The UN; a force for good in the world? By Ray Kearney The United Nations was founded 72 years ago this year, shortly after the end of World War II. Today the UN membership is an impressive 193 countries. The UN is best known for the multinational peacekeeping force normally deployed to keep opposing factions apart on agreed or disputed borders. The UN and all its various branches became synonymous with “Peace, help, aid and fairness”. If the UN said something, it had to be right, after all, it was the entire human family coming together to ensure balance and fairness. Organizations can become corrupt, bigoted and unfair and the UN is not an exception. Bullies emerge who try to control others. The UN has an inner sanctum called “The Security Council” made up of 15 member countries, 5 of whom are permanent. These 5 permanent members have more power than the other 188 member countries. If some of the permanent members want a little country to be reprimanded, sanctioned or even invaded they can have the Security Council vote for resolutions and sanctions whether they be fair or not. Some years back the Security Council was assured by two of the most respected permanent members that Saddam Hussein of Iraq had vast stores of weapons of mass destruction. We were

told that the proof was 100% certain; the whole world was in danger from this madman. This war was approved by the Security Council and the madman was toppled. Unfortunately or fortunately, no weapons of mass destruction were ever found. A clever and well-engineered lie had started the invasion of a sovereign state. The bombing of Libya led to the toppling of another madman, General Gadhafi. ISIS was born and nurtured as a result of these two UN approved invasions. The UN regularly passes resolutions to keep rogue nations in check. In 2016 the UN passed a total of 24 resolutions, amazingly 20 were passed against Israel. With all the strife in the world, with all the terrorist activity perpetrated by ISIS and other Islamic terrorists, why is the UN so biased against one little country; half the size of Ireland? Why did outgoing President Obama orchestrate last month’s UN Security Council resolution against Israel? Last week the “Paris Peace Talks” were designed to manoeuvre Israel into a corner, demanding adherence to the failed two-state solution, conceived in the 1970’s and became official UN strategy in 1993. In June 1967 Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq backed up by Kuwait, Algeria, Sudan and Saudi Arabia gathered an army of 465,000 troops, almost

3,000 tanks and 800 military aircraft besieging Israel and declaring that they were going to promptly obliterate them. The UN did not intervene. As the best form of defence is attack in a situation like this, the Israeli air force destroyed the Arab fighter planes on the ground in a preemptive strike and after just six days Israel accepted a proposed ceasefire from a position of strength. They had pushed the besieging forces back and regained some of their own territory that had been stolen from them centuries earlier including a portion of Jerusalem. The Arab aggressors then wanted the occupied territories they had “gambled and lost” to be returned to them. When you go to war, shed blood and then lose, you’ve got to live with the consequences, ask Germany. The Palestinians want Israel to give up their land which historically had been theirs anyway. Israel wants peace but the Palestinians won’t even sit down with the Israelis until they give this land to them. The Palestinian Authority is using the UN to pressure Israel. The Palestinians believe that there should be no negative consequences to their aggression, past or present. The lands referred to as the “occupied territories” should be more correctly referred to as the “Israeli Reoccupied territories”. So now you decide, is the UN what you thought it was? Is the UN a force for good and fairness in the world?

Corgi Top Ten are added to the totals already received.

It may be hard to believe that model toy maker Corgi celebrates its 60th anniversary next year and to celebrate, they are working on their Ultimate Top Ten and want lovers of the model cars, plans, trains and accessories to cast their votes. While nobody would dare play with an original James Bond DB5 from Goldfinger, or a Batmobile or even Captain Scarlet or a Black Beauty from the Green Hornet, they want to hear from you.

Last month the ‘Ultimate Corgi Top Ten’ was announced and they say: “we have been absolutely inundated with nominations and photographs from our readers, determined to help us mark this 60th Anniversary year in style. With entries coming by e-mail, on our social media sites, or on the Corgi forum, Corgi collectors have been keen to register their votes and help to ensure that their favourite models appear in our top ten list at the end of the year. If you have yet to place your vote, please do so as soon as you can, as the open voting will end on Sunday 13th November, when the top 20 model nominations will go forward to the final stage and the creation of our ‘Ultimate Corgi Top Ten’ list. Many of the nominations received so far have also included some quite humbling descriptions of how much Corgi models have meant to people over the past 60 years and how model collecting continues to be enjoyed by many. Some respondents describe how their favourite models were the ones they remembered playing with as youngsters and how the Corgi catalogue would be required reading throughout the years and

especially in the weeks leading up to birthdays and Christmas. Others describe how they attempted to build a collection of models when they became older and had more disposable income, but collecting the models they played with when younger, or buying the models they always wanted when young, but were never fortunate enough to get. What has proved to be quite surprising is the fact that very few models from the past few years have been nominated so far, which is clearly suggesting that many of the classic, earlier Corgi models are held in great affection by model collectors. Perhaps the least surprising aspect of the nominations received so far is the almost total domination of TV and Film related models in our list. Some readers have voted for just a single model, whilst others have nominated a full list of ten, but in many of these cases, either the James Bond Aston Martin DB5, or the Batmobile feature prominently, with both of these classic models currently vying for the top spot in our list. Some of the more unusual suggestions that are currently doing extremely well in the poll are the American La France Aerial Rescue Fire Engine and the Ford Holmes Wrecker, which tells another story about the Corgi models that youngsters enjoyed playing

with in their formative years. The top performing Aviation Archive model is currently the 1/72nd scale Avro Lancaster ‘S for Sugar’, although it is still some way behind the leading TV and Film nominations. This is the last opportunity for all Corgi collectors to make sure that their favourite models have a chance of appearing in our ‘Ultimate Corgi Top Ten’ list – with open nominations closing on Sunday 13th November, there are just THREE WEEKS left to register your votes. Registering your nominations could not be simpler – please send your voting email list and any photographs to us at diecastdiaries@hornby.com, using Ultimate Top Ten as your heading, or via our Facebook and Twitter accounts using #CorgiTop10. This will allow us to quickly access your votes and make sure they

Your collections need you - this is a final call to action for collectors who have yet to vote in our poll and have enjoyed collecting with us over the years. With certain ranges currently lagging a little behind, we need Modern Truck, Vanguards, Military Vehicle and Aviation Archive collectors to send us their nominations, to see if any of these models can stand a chance of appearing in the ‘Ultimate Corgi Top Ten’ list and challenge the domination of the TV and Film models. Whichever models you nominate, please help us to mark this 60th Anniversary year in style and find the Corgi models that deserve to be classed as the most popular in our history. Ultimately, one model will be crowned

the most popular Corgi model of all time and only our readers and collectors can influence this decision. At the moment, any Corgi model is in with a chance of winning our poll - perhaps it could be a Blackpool Balloon Tram, or FAB 1 that takes this significant model collecting accolade, but if either of them do, they will have been voted for by the most important people in our 60 year history – our model collectors. In the next edition of Die-cast Diaries, we will publish the final list of the 20 most popular models, from which readers will be invited to choose just one – your choice of the model that deserves the title of the ‘Ultimate Corgi Model’. You have just three weeks left to make sure your favourite model appears in this definitive list.” So to get involved just E-mail: diecastdiaries@hornby.com and find out more on the Corgi Facebook and Twitter using #CorgiTop10 and make sure your favourite Corgi model is in the Ultimate Top Ten list!

The role that the SEAT 600 played in the democracy of modern Spain By David Hudson The SEAT 600 is not just an iconic car but possibly the only car that helped with bringing modern democracy to Spain. It all started just after the end of the Spanish Civil War, when almost 90% of Spain's population were peasants. However, due to government policy, in just ten years almost 80% were able to read and write. This gave everyone the ability for independent information and decision making unlike before, when they had to rely on being told what is what. The government also provided a scheme for basic cheap food similar to the UK after the war with subsidised bread and milk. The Bars were also encouraged to produce a cheap midday meal – Menu del Dia or Menue diario for workers. This was to help in building a healthier population and for the first time in Spanish history, there was an agricultural policy that made working on the land more prosperous. Now the final part on the road to democracy came when the directors of a new company in Barcelona called SEAT, visited the Geneva Motor Show in 1954 and returned with the licence to produce the FIAT 600. This little economical, easy and cheap to maintain and run car that could hold four people, was an overnight success and after two years the order book had to be closed to meet demand. Now the working class could freely explore their country and meet their countrymen and not rely on public services and their attitude that the 600 could go anywhere

including off road, meant nothing was unattainable. As this is the 60th Anniversary of the SEAT 600 we thought that we should do something to help in celebrating its 60 years. Thus we set about trying to inform as many countries as possible of the Anniversary. We ask all you motoring enthusiasts out there if you could help us promoting this event And I have attached a tale of the Guinness World Record which is quite a turn around because in the 90s the 600 was in risk of being crushed out of existence. On 9th January 2003 I joined thirteen Spaniards to form the first Spanish speaking 600 & Classic club in this area and became their Vice President. It was their attitude that the 600 could go anywhere that gave me the sense of adventure and the idea to drive from Torrevieja in Alicante to Madrid with my wife Angie taking with us a gift and letter from the Mayor of Torrevieja, to the Mayor of Madrid to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 600 and cement the relationship between the two cities. Driving in the Centre of Madrid in a little 600 is an experience that not many Spaniards would do by themselves without a police escort. Besides travelling 2,500kms in five days on a round trip to Portugal for our 45th Wedding Anniversary in 2007, we have also visited the walled cities of Toledo and Avila, the historic cities of Valladolid, Burgos and Segovia, driving under, over and around Madrid, Cordoba, Jaen, Cuenca, Sevilla, Merida and a weekend drive over five mountains to Ubida in Andalusia. When I was running late to lead a carnival procession in Roldan, I drove through a storm drain that was just inches bigger than the 600, under a dual motorway to get there in time. Once when we were bored I took the mountain dirt track a little wider than the 600

from Lorca in Murcia with a 200m sheer drop to the river below for 20kms: a bit hairy! Another time I was paid a 100â‚Ź and joined a hundred 600s to chauffeur 3,000 delegates at a Conference near Alicante. To date, we have driven a total of 90,000kms in Spain and Portugal. Recently we formed an On Line Classic Club with the aim to encourage owners of classics to David & Angie Hudson with Coche Fantastico visit Spain and enjoy the magnificent scenery and the countries and it provides information history of Spain. Why not make it a on the Spanish Classic scene with special holiday starting with a cruise information on driving in Spain, help (ferry) to Santander, then enjoy and advice plus free information driving in a country that is so big and sheets on all aspects of driving in different. However, the distance from Spain. Thank you for reading this and North to the South is only 700kms anyone who is interested in a free please email: which could be done easily in two membership days. The club has members in five davidclubtorre@gmail.com.

Health & Wellness Diabetes patients often skip eye exams: Survey

By BPT The leading cause of blindness, diabetes, is steadily growing and is expected to affect one in 10 people worldwide by 2040, the International Diabetes Federation predicts. As prevalent as the condition is, 79 percent of Americans don't know diabetic eye diseases have no visible symptoms and more than half do not know comprehensive eye examinations can detect diabetes. Those findings are from the 2016 American Eye-Q Survey conducted by the American Optometric Association (AOA).

"In 2014 alone, eye doctors found diabetes-related manifestations in 240,000 patients who were not aware they had diabetes, leading to a prompt diagnosis and care which minimizes the risk of complications," says AOA President Andrea P. Thau, O.D. "A comprehensive eye examination with a doctor

of optometry is important not just to maintain eye and vision health but can be a first line of diagnosis for many systemic diseases." The AOA advocates for regular, dilated eye exams for those with diabetes, or at risk for diabetes, because the alternatives, like online vision apps, only check for refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and cannot detect diabetes. "When the eyes are dilated, an eye doctor is able to examine the retina for signs of diabetic eye disease and prescribe a course of treatment to help preserve an

25

individual's sight," Dr. Thau says. The survey, designed to drive education of eyehealth issues, also found that people diagnosed with diabetes are acutely aware of its effect on eye health and are more likely than the average American to worry about their eye health. Only 54 percent of people with diabetes who were surveyed regularly visit their doctor of optometry to understand the toll diabetes is taking on their overall eye health. Visit www.aoa.org for more information on diabetes and comprehensive eye examinations.

Confidence-boosting tips for fitness class first-timers By BPT You've joined a health club and now you're curious about fitness classes. You're almost ready to sign up for an indoor cycle, yoga or strength-training class, but something stops you. You feel nervous and uncomfortable and decide to wait. Group fitness classes are a fantastic way to exercise because you're guided by an expert, plus the energy of the group keeps you motivated. However, because it's something new that puts people outside their comfort zone, it's common to feel apprehensive in the beginning. To help you gain confidence to try any type of group exercise class, consider these tips from three health club members. Comfort over style. "Trust me, no one cares what you're wearing," says Deb Kampe, a member at Life Time, which operates 122 destinations across the United States and in Canada. "If you want to wear gym shorts and a T-shirt, do it. Head-to-toe athleisure? Do it. A tutu? Do it. Just make sure you're comfortable and safe. Don't spend a fortune on the latest fitness clothing trends or labels. Expensive does not equal better." Don't be self-conscious. "It's easy to assume everyone in class is fit, knows all the moves and is judging you. No one cares," Kampe says. "Once the music starts and the instructor begins, all eyes are up front taking direction and being lifted into the moment."

Everyone was a newbie. "Everyone was a first-timer at some point, so they know how it feels," says Dustin Meriwether, member at Life Time. "They're not going to judge you for it, and many - hopefully all will be willing to answer any questions and help in any other way." Instructors want to assist. "All instructors and other members want to help you," says Kelby Mezzenga, member at Life Time. "So just walk in and let the instructor know you are new or have a question. That welcoming feeling takes the edge off and chances are, you'll have met a new friend." Keep an open mind. "Group fitness classes are designed to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone. You may be unfamiliar with the equipment you'll use or how hard it might be, but I guarantee you will feel the burn," Mezzenga says. Listen to your body. "You know your body best," says Meriwether. "If something doesn't feel right or if you

know you have problems with something, modify the workout correspondingly. People do that all the time and many instructors are good about suggesting such modifications." Give it 100 percent. "You get out what you put in," Meriwether says. "If you put in minimal effort, you can expect minimal results. But if you give it your all, you can expect some pretty fantastic fitness changes." Bring water. Hydration is important, but you don't need to worry about anything else. "Life Time has everything you'll need for any class, from yoga mats to towels," says Mezzenga. Celebrate victories "During the cool-down and stretching segment of class, take a moment to celebrate your victory," says Kampe. "Look around, everyone no matter what their age and ability will be seriously sweaty, all there with you sharing the same endorphins. Take that feeling with you and own it. Then look at the class schedule and commit to another one." For more information about group fitness, visit www.lifetimefitness.com.
