View from the Director's Box What a terrific performance from everyone last weekend in biting conditions at one of the higher placed teams. With several regular first choice players missing, then the withdrawal of the experienced Abel and Dani, it was delight and credit to a mainly youthful outfit who battled out the draw. There is immense talent within the town which is being incorporated into the football club. In recent years we have lost talent such as Belima and Damian Aguero, which we intend to remedy with a more concentrated policy that binds these exceptional young players to FC Torrevieja, ensuring they receive professional coaching, first team opportunities and then the club benefits when they move on. It augurs well for next term that the likes of Sergio, Patri and Matias have amply demonstrated their capability of holding their own in senior company. And there are more to come. But first of course we must ensure our Tercera survival. At only four points off the drop zone we are in dangerous territory. This season, group six is weaker than usual. Last term both Catarroja and Levante B wracked up 92 points (albeit playing 2 games more than teams will this season). It will surprise me if the top two this time round break the 80 mark. Four of the five relegated teams from last season finished with 29 points or less already attained by the bottom five as the table currently stands! We need at least four more wins from our remaining 14 fixtures to see us continue in this tier. Here's to one of those vital wins today.

Battle of Sagunto The wind threatened to blow the posts down on Saturday as Torry shivered up a mountain top seeking points against high flying Saguntino. This match may not have had the feral rawness of the 1962 World Cup encounter between Chile and Italy, known as the Battle as Santiago, but was brutal enough, with Abel scythed down and off injured in the first half and tackles flying in willy nilly as the partisan Saguntino fans screamed for a winner. Torry had the fierce wind at their backs in this inhospitable wilderness in the first period and made the most of the advantage. Gasch surged down the left flank in the second minute, cutting the ball back for Jose Manuel who over reached when blazing high. Without regulars Koeman, Burguillos, Juanfran and of course Ernesto, this Torry line up was choc full of youth. When Manu Amores replaced Abel and Sergio deputised for Dani, it looked a team for the future, but one rife with talent and desire. Jose Manuel was returning from injury and led the line with gusto, whilst reinstated captain Jorge dominated at the back in indomitable style. However, it was he who fell victim to the swirling wind, losing the flight of the ball and allowing Borja Mir a one on one with Tur. The young keeper was fast off his line and extended his body bravely, deservedly blocking the shot with his legs. Tur's punching was also solid and authoritative as he was called into action from several corners and free kicks but it was Torry who took an unexpected lead in the 17th minute. Dani was felled whilst on the rampage and took the free kick himself, finding his captain's head. Jorge muscled himself into pole position and glided the ball into the far corner of the net. Torry began to get a grip on the game and it was a surprise when the hosts equalised in time added on at the end of the first period. A free kick award to the hosts 25 yards directly in front of goal provided the injury time leveller. The ball was struck cleanly and Tur did well to push it on to the bar. It fell but a foot from the line and Fran GimĂŠnez was the first to react, getting his body to the ball and 4 forcing it over the line as Tur attempted to retrieve it. It was a

Saguntino 1: 1 Torrevieja body blow to the Salineros, who are beginning to make a bad habit of conceding goals in time added on. Sergio replaced Dani Meseguer at the start of the second half, thus reducing experienced Torry personnel to a minimum and for the first fifteen minutes were put under maximum pressure. Tur was called into action time after time, but on each occasion he was up to the task. Torry relied on fast breaks but Villanueva was not getting the service he needed and struggled to trouble the target. Cuco Ros and Manu Amores were working tirelessly, but Saguntino were in full control of the midfield and raided the Torry goal time after time. However, Boix, Rafa and Sergio all raised their game to join Jorge as being impenetrable. Jorge even found time to go raiding. Gathering the ball deep in his own half, he surged forward, accelerating past opponents with power before it fizzed out at he reached the penalty box. Saguntino were frustrated but pressed for the winner. Torry worked hard to keep them at bay and in the final analysis, thoroughly deserved their point. Torry are now unbeaten in their last three matches but other results demonstrated that they are far from safe. The remaining third of the season will prove tense and difficult. Here's hoping the unbeaten run can continue against Villareal C today.

FC Torrevieja: Tur, Boix, Rafa, Jorge, Dani Meseguer (Sergio, 46 '), Cuco Ros, Abel (Manu Amores, 51'), Luis, Gasch, Jose Manuel (Patri, 65 '), Villanueva..

Group Six Roundup Six draws, a mere 16 goals and two bottom four teams winning made it clear that in group six this season, any team is as good as any other and nothing is guaranteed. Crevillente lifted themselves off the bottom, but still stay just one off that spot with a 2-1 win at third place Castellon. The hosts took the lead but Carrasco levelled from the penalty spot before the interval, then Aleo won the points on 62 minutes. Eldense did just as well with a home success over 2nd placed Elche Ilicitano, Alex Pascual grabbing the vital only goal. Denia continue to battle for scraps with a goalless home draw with Jove whilst struggling Llosa did well to find an equaliser at Alzira after William had given the hosts a 12th minute lead. Alzira fall to fifth, replaced in the top four by La Nucia who secured all three points at the Camilo Cano against Muro courtesy of a second half Juan Fran strike. Gandia were the only other victors at the weekend pleasing home fans with a 2-1 success over Acero. Gandia leapfrog Acero in to 11th place on 36 points. Catarroja return to the bottom of the pile despite a draw with Borriol. Granero put them ahead on 58, but Eixea continued Borriol's great 2013 sequence with a strike with a quarter of an hour left on the clock. Borriol are unbeaten since before Christmas. Utiel and Burriana both failed to find the net and five points continues to keep them apart in 8th and 15th places respectively. League leaders Novelda struck first at Villareal when Gomis netted after 20 minutes. The yellow submarine equalised on 37 through Ivan Aguro and with no further score, it finished 1-1, Novelda six points clear at the top on 51 and Villareal in sixth place on 42. No match for Ribarroba who tumble into the bottom four on goal difference. 6

Villarreal CF Today's Visitors Villarreal CF Villarreal celebrate their 90th anniversary next Sunday, being formed on 10 March 1923. They have three teams in the national divisions, with their current first team in the Segunda, though with a rich history that saw them Champions league semi finalists (losing to Arsenal) in 2006. The team that plays in the Tercera division is their third team Villarreal C - and is usually full of exceptionally talented young players, all hoping they will progress through the ranks to first team football. They are based close to Castellon and these games take on an added significance. Division three history between FC Torrevieja and Villarreal C has been dominated by the visitors, with last season's 2-1 Torry win our first and served up courtesy of an injury time winner from Juande. This term Torry drew 1-1 at Villarreal, with Gasch getting the leveller with less than ten minutes on the clock. It has been a frustrating season for Villarreal, defeating all the top teams, but losing to many of the lesser lights. Hence they occupy 6th spot, scoring 2 more than Torry and conceding one more that Torry. Midfield sides Acero and Burriana have notched 4 and 3 goals respectively against them landing their heaviest defeats this term, whilst strugglers Catarroja and Llosa have enjoyed shut outs. Who knows how today's contest will go! Let's just hope for a good game - and a Torry win!

THE TORRY ARMY Proud to Support FC Torrevieja TORRY ARMY NEWS A week or so ago the Torry Army took a full coach for a day out to the Jalon Valley to see the Almond Blossom. Things didnʼt quite work out as planned and the travellerʼs didnʼt see too much Almond Blossom. They did, however, sample a glass of wine or two at the bodega in Jalon village followed by a carvery lunch at Monroeʼs in Pedreguer and it was generally a good day out. There was a quiz on the way up to test the “old grey matter” and some impromptu singing on the return journey from the back of the coach. A song-sheet will be handed out on the next day out so the coach can “rock” on the journey home. Arthur ran one of his popular fun quizzes last night at the Casa Ventura in San Luis and I am sure those that attended had a good time. On Tuesday 26th March, a Session of Prize Bingo, with the prizes having an Easter theme, run by the dynamic duo of Paddy and Mick, will held at the Washington Bar, Washington Square, San Luis with “Eyes Down” at 2.00 pm. Please come along for a bit of fun and the chance to win one or two of the “Easter” prizes that are on offer. Another social event being planned after Easter is ten-pin bowling at the new bowling alley in Quesada followed by Fish & Chips for those that want to sample what are probably the best Fish & Chips in Spain at the nearby Quesada Fish & Chips restaurant. 10

Copa del Rey to be a Madrid Derby

According to Marca.com, the venue for the Copa del Rey final is once again keeping the finalists' fans guessing. Both Madrid teams won the right to play in the most special match on the calendar and possible stadiums are beginning to be suggested with a view to hosting the clash which is provisionally scheduled for the 18th May. It's the only Final played in the Spanish top flight which is decided on a nuteral ground, The 'Blancos' are yet to make any official comment on the subject but Barcelona and Valencia are the favourites. The president of the Federaci贸n de Pe帽as del Real Madrid (Real Madrid Supporters Club), Alejandro Lora, said as much to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope: "We want a ground that is neutral. We like Mestalla as it is close by and because they look after us there, but Camp Nou is in with a chance, it's an option which can't be ruled out because of its capacity". What is clear is that Real Madrid seems to feel comfortable of late in the 'Azulgrana' domain. The players, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, would prefer a larger ground where they can develop their game and Camp Nou is ideal for that. A meeting will be held in the next few days between the finalists and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to set the date and venue. As is customary, the official body is waiting to collect the various proposals together. In the event that the teams do not reach an agreement, it will be for the RFEF to decide which city will host the final.

Xabi Alonso: "Tiki-taka isn't our style" The Real Madrid anchorman was full of praise for the 'Los Blancos' attack, claiming "we have players who are on another level compared to my previous clubs". Speaking to UEFA's 'Champions' magazine, Xabi Alonso contrasted the differences between the footballing philosophy at Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. "Tikitaka isn't our style. We have a clear aim, which is to get into the opposition box as quickly as possible". The midfielder also looked forward to the upcoming clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford, a ground he graced on several occasions when he plied his trade for Liverpool. "From the fans' point of view and because of the history of both clubs, this meeting is pure football. Winning the club's 10th European Cup mustn't become an obsession, because that doesn't help, but it is a major target". The Real Madrid anchorman was full of praise for the 'Los Blancos' attack, claiming "we have players who are on another level compared to my previous clubs. Our forwards can create chances at any given moment". Alonso believes his own form is a reflection of the team as a whole: "My performances always depend on the team. That's what really matters to me: the team. When I see things that can be improved, that means I have room for improvement, too". The silky midfielder hailed JosĂŠ Mourinho's "ability to empathise with his players, which is no mean feat. When you see that a group is behind you and believes in the ideas you're trying to get across...that's what being a leader means. And our coach is just that. In my opinion, he's one of the best in the world". "Leaving aside his knowledge of football, he has an amazing grasp of a variety of tactical approaches, which he sometimes uses even within the same game", Alonso concluded, after lauding the Portuguese tactician for showing his players "how to psyche yourself up for every single match".

Bobby Moore Tribute Englandʼs 1966 World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore died 20 years ago on February 24, 1993 aged just 51 following a battle against bowel cancer. Here, we take a look at what some of the gameʼs leading figures said about the Bobby Moore, the player and the man.

England World Cup winning manager Sir Alf Ramsey: “My captain, my leader, my right-hand man. He was the spirit and the heartbeat of the team. A cool, calculating footballer I could trust with my life. He was the supreme professional, the best I ever worked with. Without him England would never have won the World Cup.” Brazilian Pele, regarded as the best player of all time: “Bobby was one of the worldʼs finest defenders and a great gentleman. The shirt he wore against me in that 1970 World Cup match is my prize possession.” Fellow England World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton: “Bobby Moore had class and great talent as a defender. He could sense where trouble was coming from and nullify it immediately and his distribution then was superb. His greatest asset was his influence on his team-mates and the confidence he gave them while at the same time demoralising his opponents. A real captain whose success and demeanour put him in the all-time great category and he was a pleasure to be with for so long. His statue at Wembley is a symbol of our greatest man and will be there forever.” German legend Franz Beckenbauer, part of the 1966 team defeated at Wembley: “Bobby was my football idol. I looked up to him. I was so proud to have played against him.”

26

Former England and West Ham forward Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final: “Bobby Moore was a great player, a great leader and a great friend. He was loved and respected by all who played with him and by all who watched him perform.” Current England manager Roy Hodgson: “In recent years people have been honoured for winning the World Cup, and it is unfortunate Bobby died so young and was not knighted for it.” Former England captain David Beckham said: “Bobby Moore is a legend. He is real hero of mine and a great example to every professional footballer.” Football Association director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking, and former team-mate at West Ham: “Bobbyʼs contribution to football and history has sadly only been recognised after his premature death. He was an astonishing footballer, but also a great man and an important footballing friend to me in my early days.” QPR manager and friend Harry Redknapp: “Can you tell me why he hasnʼt got a knighthood? Why wasnʼt Bobby Moore Sir Bobby Moore? No disrespect, but there are a lot of footballers who couldnʼt lace his boots, or done as much in the game as he had, who get all kinds of accolades bestowed on them. Thereʼs never been a nicer man or classier man on and off the field to ever grace the game.” Jeff Powell, award winning sports reporter and one of Mooreʼs closest friends, wrote the inscription on the Wembley statue: “Immaculate footballer. Imperial defender. Immortal hero of 1966. First Englishman to raise the World Cup aloft. Favourite son of Londonʼs East End. Finest legend of West Ham United. National Treasure. Master of Wembley. Lord of the game. Captain extraordinary. Gentleman of all time.”

Champion's League Preview Man Utd v Real Madrid Last Sunday saw Swansea dominate a courageous Bradford and run out 5-0 victors. That makes it two out of two for this column with both selections winning at odds against. The next big sporting event is Tuesday's Champions League 2nd leg match at Old Trafford where Alex Ferguson goes head to head with his old foe Jose Mourinho. The first leg ended in a stalemate. Danny Welbeck opened the scoring only to see his effort cancelled out by former red Cristiano Ronaldo. Nonetheless it was a good result for United as many a pundit expected them to struggle in the Bernabau. Just how important that away goal turns out to be remains to be seen. Mourinho first came up against Ferguson in 2004 and who will forget him running down the touchline at Old Trafford as Porto found an equaliser eliminating The Red Devils from the competition on aggregate. All in all the two great managers have met 12 times and there is no doubt who has his head in front. Mourinho has 6 wins to Ferguson's 1. There have been 5 draws. Quite remarkable when one considers the dominance of Manchester United for so long, nobody else has ever or likely will ever get close to bettering Fergie so often. Looking ahead to Tuesday and the line-ups will be interesting, it was a surprise to see Ferguson play such an attacking formation in the Bernabau choosing to start with Van Persie, Rooney and Welbeck and I'm not so certain he will be that adventurous this time around. Nonetheless with the attacking quality the teams have we have the right to expect goals, but like us the bookmakers expect them also quoting only 1/2 for both teams to net inside the 90 minutes. Likewise over 2.5 goals is as short as 4/7 so we won't be able to make hay there. One area that I think has been underestimated by the betting companies is the "To Qualify" market. This means which team will go through to the next round regardless of whether the match goes to extra time or penalties. With an away goal in the bag I would tend to favour Manchester United or at the very least make it a 50/50 chance. The bookmakers are sticking with the La Liga outfit and make them generally 8/11 favourites to go through. This means we can get odds against for Manchester united to progress and I think that's a good price. Old Trafford will be buzzing, expectation will be high. The players will be totally focussed with the league title virtually sewn up so they can attack this 100%. Ferguson would love to get only his second victory against Mourinho and he'll do everything he can to succeed. Take the 11/10 for The Reds to progress it is as short as 10/11 with some of the UK bookmakers. Three out of three would be nice.
