View from the Director's Box Time to step up and be counted With no wins and only one point from our last four games, it is not unreasonable to ask, "what has happened in the last month"? From being the only side with a 100% record after two matches, we find ourselves struggling for goals and points! Are we serious about aiming for the promotion play off matches, or do we now foresee a relegation dogfight on our hands until next May? Right, let's clear the decks and work this thing out. We have lost Josemi who not unreasonably elected for a safe permanent full time job locally as opposed to the insecurity of continuing his football career. We tried to find a way for him to continue with us, but he was unable to make training and we had to release him. Ernesto has been absent for most of September, ever since the loss at Novelda. He has been unwell and missed most of the rest of the month's training, only ,managing the substitute's bench away at Denia, where he clearly was not match fit. He is now back in full training and eager to show fans his true worth. It will be surprising if he does not prove to be Torry's star player by the conclusion of the season. It has taken a little bit of time for Pedro Lopez to gel with the existing defensive set up and he has missed a couple of games already, one through suspension. All players understand the club's policy on needless cautions and there has been a significant improvement in this area in the last few games. It needs to get better still as a side with all squad members fit and available is what the boss needs - every week! Scoring has been at a premium of late, with one penalty conversion and one other strike all to be cheerful for since 2 September. Perhaps we are about to redress that balance with the signing of 25 year old Alberto Fernandez GarcĂa, who will become better known to you through his shirt name of Koeman. Koeman has been training with the side with much purpose for the last few weeks since his departure from Hellin Deportivo in mid September and is now ready to make his mark for the Salineros. Today marks the start of matches in October, when we really need to get down to business and start stacking up the points. It is now time for every member of the club to step up to the mark and show their mettle.

Not all of the events are entertainment based. We are also planning on bringing over legends football teams, such as was the case with Liverpool. Just the Two There remain just two unbeaten teams in group six after six matches, Novelda on top with 14 points and La Nucia in the relegation places with 5. Novelda drew 1-1 with today's visitors, Saguntino, equalising midway through the second half through Perales to cancel out Chiki's first half strike. Meanwhile La Nucia who had neither scored nor conceded before their week six match, went berserk at Catarroja in a 3-3 orgy! Navarro cancelled out the home side's opener on 9 minutes with his first on 16, before shooting his side into the lead early in the second half. Catarroja struck back with goals from Nico and Lopez, before Puncho saved the day from the penalty spot with ten to go.

TERCERA DIVISIĂ“N: Grupo 6 / Day 6 On Saturday evening Jove snatched all three points off high flying visitors Muro when Huertas put through his own goal in the 62nd minute. Gandia scored early and late through Canet and Oscar when beating Burriana 2-0 to take third spot in the table and will be hard to budge from the play off places. Fuster thought he had given Crevillente their first win of the season when scoring midway through the second half of their game at Villarreal C. However the hosts levelled it with 7 minutes left on the clock through Lopez. The point keeps Crevillente off the bottom on goal difference from Catarroja. Despite the 0-0 scoreline Utiel and Ribarroja fought out an exciting affair with chances a plenty on both sides. In the final minutes Utiel had several opportunities to snatch the winner, but could not manage it and are in fifth spot, though level on points with the 3rd and 4th placed teams. Castellon recorded their first win of this campaign with two first half strikes in the bog that is known as the Castalia stadium. Acero finished the match with 10 men, Camarasa off for a second cautionable offence. Elche Ilicitano took themselves out of the bottom four and dumped Alzira well and truly there with an emphatic 4-1 away success. Two goals in each half saw their counter attacking policy reap rich rewards, with star man Carlos bagging a hat-trick. Eldense christened their beautiful new Pepico Amat stadium with a win, Cristian Algaba scoring the historic goal in front of 2000 spectators midway through the second period. Eldense leapfrog Torry, sitting sweetly in tenth place with 8 points. I sign off today with two disquieting and sobering statistics. First off, only three sides in our group have conceded more goals to date than Torry and they sit, 19th, 20th and 21st, rock bottom of the table. Time to shore up that defence lads! Secondly, three of the four relegation places are currently filled by last season's top teams - champions Catarroja, play off combatants Alzira and La Nucia who lost out of 4th spot by 1 point. AtlĂŠtico Saguntino Today's Visitors TThe current club was founded in 1951, although a previous side from the region was established in 1922 and this is being celebrated this season by the club as their 90th anniversary. AtlĂŠtico Saguntino play in the intimidating CAMP NOU DE MORVEDRE, which has a capacity of 4000, usually filled with hostile home supporters! They come here today in the top four, having retained that position courtesy of a 1-1 draw last Saturday with league leaders, Novelda. They returned to the third division two seasons ago after a seventeen year absence, doing so by defeating John Clarkson's champions, Benissa, in the play off final. Their last two terms in our group have seen them finish 11th and 13th respectively. The port of Sagunto enjoys high employment as one of three key ports in the Mediterranean. The main cargo is liquified natural gas with three million tonnes of this shipped per year due to the regasification plant located nearby. Around 70% of the port's current traffic consists of iron and steel products and the rest of fertilisers, construction materials, timber and perishable products. After losing their opener by 3-0 at Llosa, Saguntino has won three and drawn two, battling their path into the promotion play off places. Last season we beat them 2-0 here with Burguillos and Manu Amores scoring in each half. Two injury time goals (92nd & 93rd mins) at their place earlier in the season had given them a 2-1 win after Torry led through a first half Victor strike. Saguntino has kept one clean sheet in six thus far this term, with Torry failing to attain even that lowly statistic. Does that mean we are in for a goal feast today? I certainly hope so - how about 4-2 to Torry?

F煤tbol Club Torrevieja: Player Profiles Manolo Manolo was understudy to Cristian Mendez last season, unlucky to be the second choice keeper after a stirring pre season display of agility and courage. Manuel Vidal Rodrigues turned 22 years old on 7 September and has firmly established himself as the Torry number one. Born in the town, he played for the juvenile and CF teams before breaking into the first team. He quick off his line and as brave as can be when making last ditch saves. He will prove critical in Torry始s push for promotion.
Rafa Rafa had a great first season at Torry last term, displaying his tenacity in defence, either at left back or in the centre of the back four. This time round he will compete with Jorge and Pedro for a central defensive role. Rafael Candela Campello turned 21 this year and is sure to further improve as the season progresses. He was born in Elche and their second team is his only previous club. 9
TORRY ARMY: Proud to support FC Torrevieja Last Sunday the Torry Army took a half-filled coach to Denia to watch Torry play CD Denia. A few people who were due to go pulled out at the last minute, possibly due to the recent inclement weather, which was a pity, because the weather was absolutely glorious. The coach set off early to allow fans to have a stroll by the harbour, then Sunday lunch at one of the many bar/restaurants lining the harbour front, before going to the game. Everybody enjoyed the day except for the result which was hard to take as Torry deserved to come away with at least a share of the spoils. On Saturday 13 October 2012 there will be a Quiz-night, with the questions being asked by Quiz-Master extraordinaire Arthur, at the Casa Ventura in San Luis starting at 8.30 pm. The cost of participating will be 7 euros per head which includes a very tasty mouth watering buffet. If you would like to attend please register your interest at the Torry Army Office in San Luis. The profit made on this event will be donated to AFA, the Torrevieja based Alzheimers charity. These quiz-nights are always popular so get your name/s down quickly. On Wednesday 17 October 2012 there will be a session of Prize Bingo , at the Australian Bar in Washington Square, San Luis. “Eyes Down” from 2.00 pm. There will be food available before the Bingo at 1.00 pm. Scampi & Chips or Chicken Nugget and Chips for 4.00 euros per head. All are welcome to attend. The Torry Army Office in San Luis is open Monday to Friday between 10.00 and 12.00. Pop in for a chat and a cuppa and lend a book from the lending library and have a look at the merchandise which is available. It is an “Aladdinʼs Cave” and you may be tempted into buying something. Before the game there will be a presentation on the pitch, of a Bottle of Bubbly, to the Torry Army's choice of “Player of the Month” for September 2012. Votes were cast, on the journey home, by the fans who travelled on the Torry Army coach to Denia. Defender Abel just pipped fellow defender and captain Jorge for the honour of becoming the Torry Armys first “Player of the Month” for season 2012/13. Match Report Denia 1: 0 FC Torrevieja Hating the Doldrums I've been in the Dordogne and I've been in Dundrum, but I hate being in the doldrums! That's where we found ourselves at 7pm last Sunday night - the Denia Doldrums, after they mugged us in the 85th minute, albeit with a very well crafted and well taken goal. It was clear from early in the second period that one goal would settle the contest - we just hoped that it was Jose or Luis that would drive it home. It was not to be. Darryll Wright must be something of a soothsayer as on the coach trip up he expressed the view that playing Manu Amores on one flank and Luis Carlos on the other could prove effective. I threw my tuppence worth in and said that if Jose Manuel was the striker, then this youthful, fast and energetic trio could just work the oracle. For a brief period in the second half all three occupied these prescribed positions and although inconclusive at this stage, it looks the way forward to me. I'd much rather have a bunch of committed, rampaging young lads serve the cause than gifted but lacklustre elder statesmen. It was sad that a poor pass from Manu Amores led directly to Denia's winning goal. His errant kick was quickly pounced upon and dashed out to the far left wing. From there Borja delivered a swift cross which Roberto volleyed into the corner of the net. A super strike and one that it was hard not to appreciate, despite it spelling defeat for our heroes. Denia weathered the late Torry storm and were thrilled to have snatched all three points and lever themselves high up the league ladder, with our boys down on their uppers and down to twelfth as they trundled back to the coach. The Torry Army fans were already in their seats and watching the lads, heads down, scuff back for their journey home. Showing their appreciation of the effort of the team, and ably led by Paddy Ramos, the group shouted out their names, clapped and cheered them, bringing a smile from most faces. It was meagre reward for their work on the park, but at least it communicated that win, lose or draw, the Torry Army is 20
with them every step of the way. What a pity that only 23 members made the trip, when 50 would have been so much more fun. Ernesto returned to action at the start of the second half and showed his talent. Opponents simply cannot handle his strength and ability to shield the ball. Like Fellaini of Everton (but without the Afro), he is capable of taking the ball on his chest with his marker struggling to get anywhere near the ball. He is two thoughts ahead of any other player on the park and his vision is remarkable. As soon as Jose gets used to his style and makes those blistering runs, then the goals will flow - I promise you! Several players performed very well, including the entire back four, with captain Jorge being a tower of strength. He was unbeatable in the air and played a truly leadership role. If continuing in this vein, he will become a Torry legend. Abel, Vicente and Rafa must also be mentioned as they too were foot perfect. Abel never gives up and is a constant menace from throw ins, where he never fails to get his head to the ball to flick on into the danger area. The two full backs were super solid and can only get better. We may not have kePt a clean sheet in any of our first six matches, but I am certain there will be very many before the season ends. It was the failure to score that cost Torry dearly and that is an old story. But do not be dismayed as Jose Manuel is a goal machine in the making. Luis Carlos will find the back of the net regularly and Gasch will hit form with a vengeance once he is back to full fitness. But surely our fate rests in the main at the feet of Koeman when it comes to rattling them in. The muscular Koeman is now fit, free from suspension and raring to make his mark. Maybe he will debut today and show us that the only way is up! There remain 34 matches to contest in this group before we know our fate. In these early stages I would say that we are more than capable of beating every other team in our division. It is now critical that Casimiro finds the blend and desire that will deliver this result. It was a good start, followed by a poor spell, but more than most, he knows what his squad is able to achieve. Let's hope that today sees the start of the new drive up the table and on to the play offs. 21

With your boots on ! The Best Way to Go The expression "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" has recently been a world wide smash hit record for American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson - and a right catchy little ditty it is too. However, I do not think that I subscribe to this maxim, preferring the alternative, "what doesn't kill you probably nearly feckin' killed you". I doubt if I had a brush with death I would come out of it feeling stronger. I am sure the legs would be like jelly, the brain a blancmange and my backbone (when I rediscovered it) a very bright yellow. So what is the best way to go? "With your boots on", I hear you yell. But very few of us wear boots in this climate, so stop shouting that out as the preferred method to shake off this mortal coil. And please explain to me anyway, what is the benefit of having one's said boots on at the final breath? I doubt I'll be too worried about chilly feet! Personally I always thought I would like to go with my boots on - no, wait a moment, let me justify the turnaround. I oft daydreamed (what a plonker) of dying with my boots on, my whistle sounding like a steam train and my arm outstretched pointing to the penalty spot - before keeling over and leaving the dazed and confused to ponder if they would be able to take the adjudged spot kick before terminating the game! 28
Many people like to make a dramatic entrance - I prefer the dramatic exit, so long as there is no pain or suffering involved. That's not what I am into in any way, shape or form. Now that I have given up the refereeing, that departure strategy is no longer an option. Though were I to tackle a rigorous match in my current condition, I am well nigh on 100% certain it would be the death of me. My resolve to lose several stones and get back into reasonable mobility are daily thwarted by each sunny day and ice cold bruski - not to mention my inept resolve. So, what is my latest preferred method of signing off from the human race? I am torn between a couple of options. There is something appealing about just not waking up from a bloody good night's sleep and thus knowing nothing about it. This way one misses the distress of those near and dear, or in my case, the delirium as they trash the place looking for the party to end all party preparation papers! Good luck to them, I say. Fill your boots and laugh until it hurts. Maybe a mysterious, unsolved disappearance would suit better. Like a dog who knows the end is close and simply takes off to an isolated spot to lie down and leave it all behind. There are many former cave isolated houses dotted around the mountain ranges in my neck of the woods and some where wild boar still sniff out an existence. Maybe I could time it to slither in to one of these whilst attracting the attentions of a hungry pig! I'd better get the timing right though and not just have a bad dose of the man flu! If one of those beastie boys starts gnawing my extremities when I'm on the mend from a runny nose, I will not be best pleased! I'll maybe put this dramatic exit business on the back burner for a while and let what will be, come to pass. Sure I'm half mental anyway, so why torture my remaining sanity with such things when watching Torry week in week out is punishment enough! 29
