Hello PENS members! I’m so excited to take on this new role as PENS President for the next 2 years, from 20212023. Thank you to Cathy Flynn for her mentorship. I’m so happy that I will continue to work with her as she continues on the Board of Directors as Immediate Past-President. As the pandemic changed our world into many virtual experiences, both socially and professionally, it also offered us a forced opportunity to meet virtually with friends and colleagues who we may have been waiting to see in person. So, now that we are all experts in virtual meetings, I hope that you will reach out to your old and new PENS colleagues! If a virtual meeting is not for you, connecting via PENS Pals is also a great option! What an amazing conference we had in April! Thank you to the Conference Planning Committee for organizing such a thoughtful, educational, virtual experience for us! If you were not able to join us live for the PENS 2021 Virtual Conference, but you registered prior to the conference, you still have access to the content through July 2021. Don’t forget to claim your CEs by July 20, 2021. A big Thank You to all of the amazing speakers! I’m always so impressed by the knowledge and expertise of our colleagues working in clinical care, industry and research. It excites me to hear about their projects and clinical cases. PENS would not be able to provide such a wonderful learning experience without the support of our incredible industry sponsors! As our sponsors know, nurses are integral to the care of patients with diabetes and other endocrine disorders, and I know they love being able to interact with us during our conference, and in our offices. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you to get involved in PENS! This is YOUR organization and we have many committees and task forces that could use your help and experience! It’s a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. Hopefully, as the world starts to re-open, we will be together again at our next conference in Bonita Springs Florida in 2021. If not, I look forward to interacting with you virtually through the next year.

PENS Research Committee Report May 2021 Chair: Andrew A. Dwyer, PhD, FNP-BC, FNAP, FAAN The 2021 PENS National Conference was again held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once again, the Leadership team did an exceptional job holding the meeting in a new format. The Research Committee was pleased to review 8 abstracts submitted for the meeting (Case report: n = 1, Informational: n=1, Research: n= 3, Product: n=2). Committee members provided constructive feedback and mentoring to help individuals publish their abstracts in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing. Based on overall excellence and relevance to pediatric endocrine nursing practice, the Committee selected one abstract for oral presentation at the virtual meeting. Erika McCann gave an excellent presentation of her project “A Quality Initiative: Addressing Deficits in the MultiDimensional Care Associated with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia.” Two prior PENS grant awardees presented their work: Prof Terri Lipman and Dr. Jennifer Morone gave a timely and compelling presentation “Racial Disparities in the Use of Technology in Children with Type 1 Diabetes: Focus on Parents’ Perspectives.” PENS multicenter grant awardee Dr. Meg Keil and her colleagues Drs. Louise Fleming and Kevin Lewis shared their highly innovative work developing a mobile health technology intervention “Development of An Adrenal Crisis Prevention Mobile Health Application: A Multi-Center, Pilot Study.” These are porjects hat all PENS members can be proud of and we look forward to supporting more great resaerch and quality improvement projects through PENS – pleae consider submitting a proposal!

Conference Planning Committee PENS Reporter Update May 2021 We have completed yet another successful Pediatric Endocrine Nursing Society National Conference! We hope that those of you who were able to attend the live conference days felt connected with other attendees and were able to learn through the many sessions available. Don’t forget that the content is still available for those who could not attend the live days, or anyone who would like to watch more sessions (or re-watch!). This past year, the Conference Planning Committee worked quickly between the November 2020 virtual conference and the April 2021 virtual conference to compile a full new program. Conference planning committee members were dedicated and worked very hard to make sure that a full agenda was put together in a short time frame. As with the November 2020 virtual conference, we tried to schedule sessions that worked for both East and West coast time zones to accommodate everyone as best we could. The 2021 National Conference had 314 total attendees which is incredible! There were a total of 21.75 CE credit hours available via a range of diabetes and endocrine sessions. We felt very supported by our sponsors this year and continue to thank them for their ongoing support, even in our virtual setting. Our evening event featured a fun and interactive magic show which was enjoyable for our attendees and their families!

This year’s Conference Planning Committee included Christin Morell as Co-Chair, along with Sheri Luke, Jennifer Anisko, Josie Hong, and Amanda Patterson. We were fortunate to have Cathy Flynn as our ever-supportive board liaison, and as always, we really appreciated the ongoing support from Christie Ross, PENS Educational Program Coordinator, Caitlin Arnold Condie, PENS Meeting Manager, Candice Miller, PENS Associate Executive Director and JerrieLynn Kind, PENS Executive Director. We would really appreciate if you could complete the 2021 Conference evaluations if you have not yet, and be sure to claim your CE credits before the end of 90 days from the conference! Please take the time to think through your evaluations and provide details about what you liked, what you would have changed, and any future suggestions. The conference evaluations provide valuable information so that we can help improve future conferences. I am ‘signing off’ as Conference Planning Chair and passing the role over to Christin Morrell for 2021-2022! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the 2022 National Conference which is scheduled in Bonita Springs, FL at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point from May 18 – 21, 2022. Can’t wait to see you all there! Wishing you health and happiness, Leigh Pughe, RN, CPNP 2020-2021 Conference Planning Committee Chair

Nominations Committee 2020-2021 Report Chair: Cheryl Switzer, Immediate Past-President Board Liaison: JerrieLynn Kind, Executive Director Committee Members: Margaret Garner Courtney Robertson Barb Lightner Michelle Marowitz
Purpose of Committee: The PENS Nominating Committee is responsible for recruiting candidates, and slating of the ballot for the PENS annual election. The following are the responsibilities of the committee members: • Oversee the annual elections • Present a session on leadership at annual conference which meets the following objectives: o Review PENS mission, goals and purpose o Gain a shared understanding of basic responsibilities of nonprofit organizations and their leaders o Discuss the financial responsibilities of a nonprofit organization o Become acquainted with participant colleagues & learn what inspires others to volunteer • Make recommendations to the board of any suggested change in the elections process.
Summary of Projects: It was a challenging year for the Nominating Committee, because most of our recruitment work is done at conference. Unfortunately, since we did not have an in-person conference our committee had to try to reach out to potential candidates via the conference app. This effort was met with varying degrees of success. But we were successful in recruiting candidates for 2 Director positions, 2 Nominating Committee positions and Treasurer. Election results were as follows: Treasurer Jan Foote Director Mandi Cafasso Mary Ann Johnson Nominating committee Meg Keil Melissa Rearson Welcome new Chair Cathy Flynn, our outgoing President!!! Thank you to all the members of the nominations committee for their extraordinary work this year. For 2021-2022 we are looking for candidates to run for President-Elect, Secretary, one Director and two Nominating Committee. Please consider volunteering to run!!!
