or years I thought the sharing of Mother Teresa’s personal letters, the ones she explicitly asked to be destroyed in her will, was a grave injustice to a woman who had done so much for humanity. Having read excerpts, I still think it unfair but find myself grateful to have been able to read them and to see even she had a crisis of faith.

In hard times, people often seek a reason; we ask “why?” or “how did this happen?”—we seek clarity. Perhaps what we should be seeking is not clarity but faith, defined as “complete trust or confidence in someone or something.”

Do you have faith? Every day? Sometimes? Faith in people or in God? Or more like me, do you lose faith continually and pray you don’t lose it forever?

When things are going well, it’s very (VERY) easy to have faith and say, “God is good, people are good, love is good, Mother Earth is good—let’s go plant a tree.”

But when times are bad, this is more my rhetoric: “Is there a God? Is humanity awful? Boy, that tree sure is a pain in the ass to water.”

It is a blessing that Mother Teresa believed enough in Jesus (her Lord), because in his name, emulating his teachings, she brought comfort to thousands living in conditions that we can’t possibly imagine. Yet her faith in that same Lord was lacking at times, and this caused her much pain.

Whether it is in God or in people, we all lose faith. Some recover it—it’s a little broken or badly damaged, but it’s there—and thank goodness because that faith will be necessary to get us through our next struggle. And let me promise you with undue certainty, there will be a next struggle, and a next.

December is a good month to rediscover faith. Yes, I am asking you to take the time to restore your faith—be it in God or in humanity—if it has been lost, or strengthen it if it has been weakened. For me, I have faith in the people around me, my community, my church, and my God. That faith fosters me through my good and bad times, but it certainly is not constant. I doubt daily; hourly; honestly, by the minute. Not even Mother Teresa possessed blind faith. Perhaps that’s the point: Faith is not blind, but it’s not clear either.

My December prayer for you is that you find faith when you lose it, because you will lose it. When you do, I hope you search for it like you would search for your mother’s silver after a house fire. When you find your faith every time after losing it, understand that like that silver, your faith will lack the clarity it once had.

So you will need to dust off the soot and polish it, because, damaged or not, you will need that faith to help you through the next fire or disease or disappointment that you face. When you face a situation that causes you fear and suffering, I hope, like Mother Teresa, you recognize that “clarity is the last thing you are clinging to and must let go of,” so that you can find faith—faith in God, in people, or simply faith that better times are ahead. Quite simply, this month I pray that during times when you have no answers, you have faith.

Yoga Nanda Hosts Guest Presenters This Winter

oga Nanda’s 200-hour Teacher Training Program, The Path to Self-Realization, is running this winter and features special guest teachers presenting a multitude of topics ranging far beyond yoga asanas. igh-cacao dark chocolate contains high levels of flavanol, a compound known for its heart health benefits, but less is known about diluted foods such as milk chocolate candy.

Harvard researchers followed 55,502 subjects for 13 years, comparing levels of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease to lifestyle traits. They found those eating one to three servings of chocolate a month (including milk chocolate) displayed a 10 percent lower risk of irregular heartbeat than those eating an ounce or less a month. Eating one serving per week of chocolate yielded a 17 percent lower risk and two to six servings a week 20 percent, and then leveled off after eating one or more servings per day.

“Eating excessive amounts of chocolate is not recommended, because many chocolate products are high in calories from sugar and fat, and could lead to weight gain and other metabolic problems,” advises Elizabeth Mostofsky, author of the study.

Emerging virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies provide avenues to alleviate such isolation, instilling contentment, peace of mind, enrichment, fun, a sense of companionship and contributing to physical and mental health.

Instead of passively watching TV, seniors can travel virtually to World Heritage sites, revisit old haunts or even attend family events they would otherwise miss. In terms of benefits attained, VR is predicted to measurably improve seniors’ quality of life.

Microplastic Mess Threatens World Oceans Scientists from the University of Hull and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have published research in the journal Science of the Total Environment showing levels of microplastics are five times higher in the Antarctic than previous estimates.

Co-author Dr. Claire Waluda, a BAS biologist, says, “We have monitored the presence of large plastic items in Antarctica for more than 30 years. While we know that bigger pieces can be ingested by seabirds or cause entanglements in seals, the effects of microplastics on marine animals in the Southern Ocean are as yet unknown.”

The tiny beads of plastic come from cosmetics or are shreddings from larger plastic items like clothing or bottles. According to United Nations sources, they may number as many as 51 trillion particles across the seafloor, throughout the oceans and on beaches worldwide. They are considered a serious threat to marine life in general. More international monitoring of the situation is needed, including a requirement for all polar research stations to provide waste treatment options.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has determined that zebrafish are social animals, similar to humans and other mammals—they form friendships, experience positive emotions and have individual personalities. Honey hunters in sub-Saharan Africa have a unique form of communication with honeyguide birds that fly ahead to point out beehives which the hunters raid, leaving wax for the birds to eat. A study in the journal Science reports that they listen for a specific call made by their human collaborators.

Dr. Claire Spottiswoode, of the University of Cambridge, in England, and University of Cape Town, in South Africa, observes, “It seems to be a two-way conversation between our own species and a wild animal.”

Just Do It – The Nike slogan has never been more appropriate. We all have something we’ve thought about doing or trying. Whether traveling to a new location, trying a different sport, joining a new-to-us group or club, or making more friends, don’t put it off— just do it.

Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and happiness in a large group of American adults, they found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were.

Journal – People often journal as a way to reflect upon their lives. This can be helpfully revealing, but rather than looking back, look forward, using a journal as a blueprint to manifest the most inspired year yet. Write out plans and dreams with the steps needed to achieve them.

Defeat allodoxaphobia – It’s the fear of others’ negative opinions. Everyone suffers from this to some extent, and it can hinder us from living our best life.

Gratitude – This is the big one.

One way to be and stay inspired is by starting off each day in a state of gratitude. Every morning before getting out of bed, think of at least three things to be grateful for. Dr. Robert Morrison Chiropractor to the Cast of Broadway’s Hamilton

As D.C. for the cast of Hamilton, what do you find Broadway actors need most?

The performers I work with take their health very seriously and are in excellent physical shape. It’s my job to help them stay that way. I do so by ensuring that their spine, extremities and muscles are in alignment. This is how we prevent injury and optimize flexibility, symmetry of movement, and balance.

A native New Yorker, Morrison has also lived and worked in Italy for 12 years. Morrison has taught applied kinesiology internationally since 2008, and in 2012, he authored a textbook titled Applied Kinesiology Manual Muscle Testing, a Practical Guide (PracticalGuidesToHealing.com). What do you think is the hardest part about being on Broadway?

First, let’s understand a little about applied kinesiology, which is the technique that you utilize.

Before I began my collaboration with Hamilton, I was required to see the show in order to comprehend the physical movements of the performers. To date, I have only seen the entire show once, but I observe rehearsals on a regular basis. I am planning on seeing the show again soon for pleasure rather than with a clinical eye.

Is there one exercise or self-help move you would recommend for Broadway stars or Broadway theatergoers, or just people in general?

Everybody has unique requirements, so I typically tailor my advice for each individual. Generally speaking, staying healthy requires persistent effort for anybody. It’s important to stay clear of negative thoughts and situations, spend enough time in nature, and avoid the temptation of harmful food and drink.

Harvesting Profits: The Roots of Our Food Crisis

very day in America, as we consume whatever food we can access and afford, the system that supplies our sustenance is engaged in its own form of consumption. It feasts on human toil, commodified animals, natural resources, and our own bodies. Food, one of the foundations of life, has become a hub of suffering and struggle.

Surveying the landscape of food, we find a long menu of problems, from farm closures to climate change. Corporate-patented genetically modified organisms (GMOs) threaten farmers, food democracy, and biodiversity. Honeybees, life-giving pollinators central to our food supply, are in mass decline from pesticides and other factors. In the United States and worldwide, hunger and malnutrition remain rampant—affecting nearly 1 billion people globally and at least 45 million Americans— even as United Nations data show we have more than enough food to feed everyone on the planet.

In short, the whole world is imperiled by our industrialized, profit-driven food system—a system that requires constant growth, maximum profit, and an economy that relies on hidden costs and false cheapness. Today’s harvest of disasters is remarkable for its sheer scope:

Public health: The epidemic of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, linked in good part to our sugar-coated, fat-laden diet, annually contributes to hundreds of thousands of deaths and health costs in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Food-borne illnesses, such as the growing salmonella crisis in chicken, sicken 48 million Americans each year, resulting in 3,000 deaths.

Environment: Toxic pesticides and herbicides, roughly 800 million pounds annually, are polluting our waterways, fisheries and air. Globally, industrial agriculture—led by livestock operations, as well as deforestation to produce more crops for feed and fuel—emits stunning quantities of methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other greenhouse gases, making food production one of the foremost contributors to climate upheaval.

Vanishing farmers and farmland: America continues to lose farmers, and farmland, at frightful rates. Some 24 million acres of farmland were gobbled up by development between 1982 and 2010, federal data shows. More than 100,000 U.S. farmers disappeared from the landscape between 2007 and

we eat are subjected to horrific brutality—mass confinement by the tens of thousands in giant warehouses, the ground and air around them filled with toxic fecal matter. Even as “humane slaughter” labels gain popularity, the life and death of the animals we eat remains, as Thomas Hobbes put it, “nasty, brutish and short.”

Everywhere on the planet, food is a source of power and conflict, with disparities of surplus and want used as playing cards in a cruelly stacked deck.

This power is wielded by states and multinational corporations, aided substantially by international “free trade” regimes, such as NAFTA, the WTO and the TransPacifc Partnership. Yet there is one consistent force underlying our troubles with food. It is the same answer doled out by journalist John Reed when asked to sum up what World War I was about: profits. To transform food and farming into a sustainable and equitable force for life, we must address the corporate-controlled food economy, and its deeper root—capitalism.

THE GIFTS OF CITRUS Colorful Good Health in Holiday Dishes

inter citrus fruits that arrive in a gift basket or show up on sale at the grocer present a welcome bright spot on winter’s darker days. Valencia and blood oranges, limes and Meyer lemons are delicious in their own right, and deserve their place on the breakfast table. Yet there are many other intriguing ways to enjoy them in vinaigrettes, salads, main dishes, baked goods and desserts.

Winter citrus is full of health benefits, just when we need them most: during the busy holiday season. To start, they help bolster our immune system, guarding against colds or helping us recover faster. Their high vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, content is water soluble.

According to a comprehensive study by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, a daily intake of 400 milligrams of vitamin C can halve the

incidence of colds in adults and cut their duration by 14 percent.

The flavonoid hesperidin in citrus helps boost “good” HDL cholesterol and lowers “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, report researchers in the Journal of Nutrition. In a new study in Nutritional Neuroscience, hesperidin in citrus also was found to ameliorate brain deterioration found in Alzheimer’s patients.

Other studies further show that the grapefruit diet wasn’t wrong; eating half a fresh grapefruit before each meal can help us lose weight. In a study conducted at the Scripps Clinic, in La Jolla, California, and published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, researchers put overweight volunteers on an exercise plan for 12 weeks and asked them to eat either half a fresh grapefruit or drink apple juice and pop a placebo pill before each meal.

The grapefruit group dropped an average of three-and-a-half pounds, compared to only one-half pound for the apple group.

Limonoids, an antioxidant found in most citrus, may help guard against stomach, lung, breast and skin cancer, according to the U.S. Agricultural Research Service. Animal and human cell studies found that limonoids—especially those in fresh oranges—harbor potential as anticancer compounds. Another study in Nutritional Neuroscience showed that the volatile compound limonene, found in the rind of a lemon, can enhance memory.

As nights grow colder and longer, winter citrus “adds a little sunshine to every meal,” says Jamie Schler, author of the recently released cookbook Orange Appeal: Savory & Sweet. Schler grew up in Florida, surrounded by citrus groves between the Atlantic Coast and Indian River.

“Winters meant Dad’s workbench in the garage groaning under the weight of brown paper grocery bags filled to bursting with navels, tangerines, grapefruits, Valencias and tangelos,” writes Schler. “I fondly recall trips in the old green station wagon to the groves on chilly weekend mornings where we could pick them ourselves.” Today, Schler and her husband own and operate the boutique Hotel Diderot, in Chinon, France, where life’s a feast—especially during citrus season.

Zesty Citrus Holiday Recipes

1 tsp ground thyme 1 tsp ground basil 2 tsp sea salt ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 medium carrots, peeled and grated 1 large egg and 1 large egg white ¼ cup Italian Parmesan cheese, grated ½ cup Italian flat-leaf parsley, small chop 1 lb hormone-free ground turkey breast

Chill the oranges for at least 1 hour or longer in the refrigerator before serving.

Meyer Lemon Chia Seed Bowl with Tangerines

Preheat oven to 350° F. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Yields: 2 servings for breakfast, or as a snack or dessert

Moroccan Spiced Orange Slices with Orange Blossom Water

¼ heaping cup chia seeds 1½ cups dairy or non-dairy milk 2 Tbsp maple syrup, or to taste 1 Tbsp Meyer lemon juice (or other citrus juice) Pinch of sea salt ½ tsp lemon zest Fresh tangerine segments for garnish

In a large bowl, whisk the egg and egg white. Add the carrots, cheese, rice, parsley and blend very well to combine. Add the turkey and blend well.

Orange blossom or orange flower water is available at better grocery stores, kitchen shops, Middle Eastern markets or online.

Yields: 4 to 5 servings 5 medium to large navel or large blood oranges 3 Tbsp orange blossom water 1 tsp ground cinnamon 2 Tbsp honey or date sugar ½ pomegranate, seeded 1½ to 2 Tbsp coarsely chopped unsalted pistachios 8 to 10 mint leaves, chopped or torn, for garnish Peel the oranges and cut away all of the white pith and outer membrane.

Slice each orange across the core into ¼-inch slices, six per orange, reserving any juice that runs off. Push out and discard any spongy white core.

Fan the slices in concentric circles, slightly overlapping the fruit, on a large round serving platter.

Drizzle the orange blossom water and any reserved runoff juice over the fruit.

Using a fine sieve, lightly and evenly dust with cinnamon and a generous

Sauté the onion in 1 Tbsp olive oil until soft and golden. Make a well in middle and add 1 Tbsp oil and add garlic in center. Wait 1 minute until getting crisp. Then stir to blend. Add the spices, salt and pepper. Then stir, and cook 1 minute more.

Using a very full tablespoon or small scooper, drop balls on parchment paper. Then roll each with your hand to get a uniform meatball. I keep a small bowl of water next to the baking sheet and dip my fingers in it before rolling (you can dip in oil).

Bake 15 minutes. Then carefully turn for 10 minutes, or until a bit crispy.

Then cool.

In a bowl, stir together the chia seeds, milk, maple syrup, Meyer lemon juice, salt and lemon zest.

Cover and chill for at least 1 hour.

To serve, spoon the chia seed mixture into bowls and garnish with tangerine segments.

Gluten-Free Turkey Meatballs

Yields: 23 small meatballs 2 cups cooked short brown rice 1 medium onion, small chop

(about 1 cup) 4-5 garlic cloves, minced 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp ground oregano

Directions for making brown rice: 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. Bring rice to a rolling boil, then lower. Simmer for 40 minutes. 1 cup will yield more than you need in this recipe, so save the rest for soup, veggie burgers, morning eggs, or even in your tossed salad.

Note: To “veganize” your recipe, use a vegan-style grated cheese. For the eggs, whisk together 1 Tbsp flaxseed meal with 3 Tbsp warm water. Place in fridge for 1 minute to thicken. Then use in this recipe instead of the eggs. This works great in other recipes too!

Not All Vegan or Plant-Based Diets Are Equally Healthy

ove over low-fat diets. More and more experts are recommending plant-based diets to reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer. But are all plant-based diets equally beneficial? And must they be all-or-none eating strategies, or is there a role for a semi-vegetarian or “flexitarian” approach?

The term plant-based diet often conjures up images of vegetarian or vegan fare. But it really means a diet that emphasizes foods from plants— vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, and the like—not one that necessarily excludes non-plant foods.

The results of studies on the health effects of plant-based diets have varied widely, largely due to how these diets were defined. Some focused on vegetarian or vegan eating habits, while others included some foods from animals.

Notably, these studies tended to treat all plant foods equally, even though eating certain foods from plants, such as refined grains and sugar-sweetened beverages, is associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes or having a heart attack or stroke, while eating whole grains and 36

produce are associated with lower risks.

That’s why we were so interested to see the results of a recently published study performed by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Led by Ambika Satija, the team catalogued the diets of nearly 210,000 nurses and other health professionals based on their answers to food frequency questionnaires every two years for an average of 23 years. From these data, the researchers defined three versions of a plant-based diet: an overall plant-based diet that emphasizes the consumption of all plant foods and reduced the intake of animal foods; a healthful plant-based diet that emphasizes the intake of healthy whole grains, fruits and vegetables; and an unhealthful plant-based diet that emphasizes the intake of less-healthy plant foods, such as refined grains.

In addition to detailing their food choices, the study participants also recorded other lifestyle choices, health behaviors, and their medical histories.

Over the course of the study, 8,631 participants developed coronary heart disease, which the researchers defined as a nonfatal heart attack or dying of heart disease. Those that followed an

overall plant-based diet were slightly less likely (an 8 percent reduction) to have developed coronary heart disease than those that didn’t.

But here’s where things get interesting. Those that followed a healthful plant-based diet had a substantial 25 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease, while those that followed an unhealthful plant-based diet had a substantial 32 percent increased risk.

This study is certainly not the last word on the subject. As an observational study, it can’t prove cause and effect like a randomized trial can. And the diet data came from self-reports, which aren’t always accurate at measuring an individual’s diet. However, these diet assessments were validated against multiple-week diet records and biomarkers. Overall, this work adds to the substantial evidence that a predominately plant-based diet reduces the risk of developing heart disease.

It has two important take-home messages. One is that a plant-based diet is good for long-term health. The other is that not all plant-based diets are equally healthy. The kind that deserves to be highlighted in dietary recommendations is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and unsaturated fats, and contains minimal animal protein, refined carbohydrates, and harmful saturated and trans fats.

In practice, this translates into eating mostly vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and soy products in their natural forms; sufficient “good fats,” such as those in fish or flaxseeds, nuts, and other seeds; very few simple and refined carbohydrates; and little or no red meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy. It also means choosing quality over quantity.

For anyone following a traditional American diet, heavy on the meat, it’s easier to make a change by starting with small dietary tweaks instead of embracing a precipitous shift to a vegetarian or vegan diet. Try the elimination game: Cut out red meat from your diet, then, after a couple weeks, eliminate other types of meat; and then do the same with dairy foods and eggs. Or try the Meatless Monday approach—don’t eat meat on Monday—then gradually add more meatless days each week. No matter what approach you take to cut-

ting out foods, try to add one or more new plant-based recipes to your cooking repertoire every week.

What you stand to gain is so much more than what you would give up.

From college athletics to Olympic training, sports medicine has a new, holistic face.

oaches and athletes nationwide are attributing quicker recovery time, less inflammation and better focus to a whole body approach to health care. A nutrient-dense diet tailored to individual needs is at the heart of overall fitness. Like Venus Williams and Tom Brady, tennis and football superstars who prefer raw vegan and organic whole foods, respectively, many of today’s outstanding athletes choose to eat clean and incorporate mind-body practices.

Telling Triumphs

Paralympic snowboard cross racer gold medalist, world champion and International Ski Federation para Nordic World Cup gold medalist Evan Strong, of Nevada City, California, was raised on an organic farm in Hawaii and continues to adopt many holistic practices. “I have a superfood smoothie every day. “I’ve faced injuries and illness during pivotal times in my life and career, but I always approached it with the intention to be proactive, rather than being reactive,” advises Coughlin.

For Strong, confronting tragedy with the right attitude offers possibility. “Thirteen years ago, I was hit by a car and lost my leg, but now I see that moment as a blessing instead of a curse. It was a hardship that tested

The U.S. interstate highway system was designed to keep America safe in case of invasion, but it had dramatic consequences for the way we live today.

Fossil Fuel Dependence

A

friend of mine recently said that he found it easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism.

I thought about this idea a great deal as I was doing research for my book Food Fight: GMOs and the Future of the American Diet. The deeper I looked, the more it became clear that many of the serious environmental problems the world currently faces— climate change, soil depletion, chemical pollution, species loss—are intractable not because of a failure of human intelligence but because of a failure of human imagination.

Or perhaps, more precisely, a failure of memory.

Remember: Our current precipitous ecological decline only began accelerating about 75 years ago, a change driven by World War II. As much as the war tore holes in the heart of Europe and Asia, it also, in its aftermath, hit the rest of the world like a meteor. In the years after the war, the United States decided that the best way to defend itself against future invasion was to build a monumental interstate highway system. This network of wide, highly engineered superhighways—modeled after the German Autobahn and named

for President Dwight Eisenhower— would allow the free deployment of armored vehicles from Maine to Florida, from Washington to San Diego, and everywhere in between.

So far so good. The U.S. has not recently been invaded by land. But in a dramatic example of unintended consequences, the interstate highway system, designed to keep the U.S. safe, has been a root cause of dramatic global political and environmental instability. The interstates—all 47,000 miles of them—have not just been used for troop transport, of course. As larger and larger roadways were constructed, they not only connected major cities but led to an endless series of concentric ring roads around cities. This allowed more and more Americans to move out into the seemingly infinite number of housing developments built in the suburbs.

Again, so far so good. This was the American Dream: the big house in the suburbs; the two-car garage; the home full of flat-screen televisions; the whole bit. And the cost?

Most obviously, all these roads, and all these cars, made the U.S. a country of commuters, utterly dependent on fossil fuels to drive their vehicles, and to heat and cool their big

houses. But fossil fuels were also turned into everything from cosmetics and wall-to-wall carpeting to baby pajamas and plastic water bottles—all the innumerable consumer products we now can’t imagine giving up.

It has become a cliché to remark that Americans make up less than 5 percent of the world’s population yet consume 25 percent of the world’s energy. This is where that number was born. The myriad problems associated with our dependence on fossil fuels (warfare in oil-producing countries; climate change; rising sea levels, ocean acidification, species loss) can all, in large measure, be traced to the explosion of growth that sprouted along the American interstate highway system.

There’s more. All those suburban roadways and housing developments also gave rise to a colossal shift in land use known as the Great American Lawn. There are now some 63,000 square miles of turf grass in the U.S., and lawn care has become something of a national obsession.

So far so good. But lawns require the cutting of forests, the removal of native plants, and for many people extensive use of lawn chemicals.

So the question remains: Is it possible to imagine, or to remember, a time when we didn’t need all of this?

All of these lawn chemicals and plastic bottles and monoculture food crops that do little more than make corn chips and fast food burgers?

Cats Hear Up to 64,000 Hz Marlow credits her cat, Osborn, with inspiring her interest in music for animals. When Osborn was injured, she visited the veterinary hospital and sang to him to keep him calm. Her home state’s Litchfield Veterinary Hospital became her initial testing ground for species-specific music.

Separation anxiety is often due to a sound the dog doesn’t recognize, Marlow explains. Sound triggers behavior, whether good or bad, as dogs relax or are stressed. A piece by Benjamin Britten, started two minutes before feeding, led to them expect food only when the music played.”

Domesticated Birds Hear Up to 8,500 Hz In the wild, birds are part of a flock.

At home, they’re often solitary. “Birds are the most musical and communicative of all animals,” remarks Marlow.

“Without companionship, birds can get neurotic and pull their feathers out. Provide a sense of the outdoors by including nature sounds in played music.”

“Animals need us to be aware of their hearing,” Marlow advises. “Holistic pet people have addressed improved diet and medical procedures. Understanding how music supports their well-being also enables us to better care for them.”

A dental implant is a permanent solution to missing teeth.

It is designed to substitute the root of a missing tooth acting as anchor for a new crown or set of replacement teeth.
