HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET
You say goodbye and I say hello Hello, hello I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello—The Beatles
T
oday when I was walking my dog past the elementary school, I saw a boy I know from the neighborhood crying. I asked him, “What’s wrong, pal?” Sobbing, he responded, “I stepped in dog poo.” I sat him down and removed it with a stick. The boy was thrilled that it could be fixed so easily. He thanked me and ran to meet up with the rest of his friends. I watched him walk away with his buddies and began to cry. Weird, right? I am sensitive at the moment because I am going through a Kelly Martinsen, breakup. It’s been a long time coming, and probably the slow naPublisher ture has been making it all the more difficult. It is at times torturous as I watch and wait for the end. I find myself pining for the days when we were each other’s “first thing” that we thought of when we woke up; when our days were spent filled with unique adventures; and when I was responsible and in control of every ounce of their happiness. Yes, I said “their”—would you believe I am in this intense relationship with not one but two very unique individuals? And they are both in no uncertain terms establishing a more distant, less dependent relationship with me. They are slowly “breaking up” with me. Before you judge me as some hussy, let me confess. Yes, I do have two love interests; their names are Dylan and Reagan, and they are 17 and 15, respectively, and they are my children. About a month ago, it really sunk in that they are beginning to make the break. Oh, they are kind about this growing independence, and I think a little nervous too; however, I can tell they are very excited about new freedoms and experiences—ones that will not be WITH me but instead told TO me (perhaps even years after they occur ). For 17 years, my husband and I lived every experience with these kids. We were focused on every school event, sporting event and social event. I even gave us a clever name: The Core Four. I recognize that for a very long time my children have validated my existence. You see it feels great to be needed. Knowing that someone else’s happiness can literally be created by you is an awesome feeling. For 17 years, I have held the “happiness power button.” But soon enough, kids figure out how to get poop of their own shoes, or handle a devastating sports loss or friendship squabble without you. They are better for it, ABSOLUTELY, but am I? Not so much. But I am getting there. The May issue has so many good reads, but I feel like the article “Midlife Purpose Search—You Are Not Alone,” on page 40, is a timely one for all of us as spring hands us new goodbyes—goodbyes to school years, to kids going off to college, to the loved ones that have passed, to houses that we have outgrown (or have burned down), and goodbyes to some personal journeys we experienced this winter. We must remember that goodbyes are often needed so that we have room to say hello to new things. Hello May, hello midlife, hello possibilities … hello, hello.
Happy Mother’s Day! The statements in this publication have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Therefore the information listed is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

his May, local yoga teacher, philosopher and award-winning writer Tatiana Forero Puerta is commemorating her latest achievement: the publication of her book, Yoga for the Wounded Heart: A Journey, Philosophy, and Practice of Healing Emotional Pain (Lantern Books, 2018). Drawing on personal experience, Puerta’s book is an unsparingly honest memoir of a childhood lost and of courage and resilience gained. It’s also an exploration of the fundamentals of yoga: as a technology that focuses our attention; as a practical application of mindfulness and attention to what is really going on in our lives and bodies; and as a vehicle for the body to guide the mind and heart toward healing. Yoga Nanda: Garden City is hosting a book release party and reading with Puerta on Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m., which will include live music, asana, meditation, reading, snacks and beverages. In addition, 15 percent of the sales from the book launch will be donated to One Love Long Island. On Saturday, May 19, the studio will host a workshop based on the book from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s workshop will utilize the physical practice of asana, as well as lecture, group work, self-reflection and meditation techniques to not only dive deeper into what is available on the yogic path but also to explore a practical application of the yogic tools of healing our precious hearts. No previous experience with yoga is necessary; just the curiosity to go within. Location: 55 Hilton Ave., in Garden City. For more information about the book, visit YogaForTheWoundedHeart.com; to register for the workshop, visit Yoga-Nanda.com. See ad on page 43.

One Hug a Day Gives Us Four Days of Health
H
udlz Trusted Touch Therapy, of Long Island, offers trusted touch therapy to those looking for a stress-relief alternative—a nonsexual holistic experience that releases the hormone oxytocin. As the world evolves and we become more technically involved, we are all losing touch with ourselves and others. The world is filled with people lacking emotional connections within themselves, their households and in society. Children with physical and mental disabilities; lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) communities; veterans with and without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); veteran families; persons with disabilities; along with hard-working Americans are starved from the lack of touch. “One hug a day gives us four days of health, all started at birth with mothers and their babies,” says professional cuddler and Hudlz owner Jason Ambesi. Hudlz provides a safe, non-sexual environment, where strong boundaries LONG are communicated and consensual trusted touch (outside the bikini areas) is offered. “This is done in anISLAND effort to empower our clients to live free and be happy,” adds Ambesi. A HEALTHY SMILE IS GOLDEN
HOW TO REDUCE DECAY-CAUSING BACTERIA
YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD LATELY ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING A HEALTHY PH LEVEL—hence health food store
shelves flooding with alkaline waters, alkalosis foods and other products that help neutralize the body. You may not have heard how the importance of pH balance starts in the mouth.
If you’ve wondered why one kid who has poor oral hygiene never gets cavities, while your kid who brushes twice a day and sees the dentist biannually is plagued with cavity after cavity, the culprit is likely pH. A healthy pH for saliva is in the 5.6-7.9 range. If the pH falls to 5.5 or below, there is a high risk of tooth decay and cavities, because bacteria thrive in an acidic environment. What’s more is that acidic saliva can be detrimental not only to oral health, but overall health. A bacterial imbalance in the mouth can result in type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney and lung complications, obesity and more. Many people simply don’t know what they are doing wrong and become frustrated that they can’t get theirs or their kids’ oral health in check, and fear the long-term implications. Typically, a dentist will treat a cavity directly, but not the bacterial imbalance in the mouth. This is a reactive and short-sighted solution that allows the cycle of decay to continue. The CariFree assessment and elevated pH products directly address the decaycausing acids that are a feeding bed for bad bacteria. “The CariFree assessment is a salivary test that gives an idea of a patient’s oral environment by looking
at many different aspects of their biochemistry and DNA,” says Linda Golden, DDS. “We are then able to use the results to design a comprehensive oral protocol that can combat pH-related and other dental issues in a holistic way.” CariFree assessment and pH products are mostly geared toward children, but they can also prove beneficial for patients with dry mouth, acid reflux, depression, and other conditions. Non-abrasive and safe to use every day, CariFree elevated pH products are highly effective and scientifically proven to prevent cavities through remineralization. Dr. Golden describes that patients may use the products that fit their lifestyle, but some patients may prefer to opt for a more pure and natural approach. Being a holistic practitioner, she has extensive knowledge and expertise to design a customized program. “Dentists should be giving not only oral health guidelines, but nutritional and lifestyle as well,” Dr. Golden shares. Some alternatives to the products presented by CariFree that she suggests to her patients include alkaline LINDA J. GOLDEN, D.D.S. water, coconut oil pulling, xylitol, lemon water, ozone and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). She also advises a healthy diet MANHASSET 516 627-8400 444 Community Drive · Suite 204 of alkaline foods, like fruits, legumes MANHATTAN 212 973-9425 and vegetables; and 120 East 56th Street, 12th Floor reducing caffeine Se Habla Español! drinks, alcohol, sugar, Call for more info about our meat and processed services or visit our website foods, which are all GOLDENSMILE.COM highly acidic.

Sparking a Revolutionary Approach to Education by Marianne Franzese, MA, MS
A
ccording to the National Institute of Mental Health, an increasing number of children have been prescribed anxiety and depression medications due to school-related issues and feelings of inadequacy. In recent years, there has been a 200 percent increase in the suicide rate among school-age children. The number of students diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has skyrocketed 43 percent. The ability to communicate with empathy is on a rapid decline. At this year’s World Economic Conference, leaders in business made the case that 21st century student goals must include creativity, empathetic communication, strong literacy, and work ethic. These are the skills that are necessary to preserve humanity. All children are creative, empathetic beings, and developing those inherent resources must become the primary function of elementary school. Elementary school is the place to create a culture that can teach our children the practices of healthy, happy embodiment so that they can become experts on how to live an inspired life. We need to engage a creative process in all content areas and actively support the empathetic call for social change. It is our responsibility to teach our children well. As I see it, the work of education is to nurture the individual spark, the true nature of the child, and ignite the light that illuminates the highest, most truthful expression of their humanness. It is this broad view of education, liberated from the mindset of standardized instruction and awakened to the mission of holistic inspiration, that set into motion the creation of Spark Elementary. After seven years of creative curriculum development and holistic intervention strategies, our revolutionary approach to education was born. Spark Elementary is rooted in the education of the mind, body and soul of the child. We are all organic creatures and there are conditions under which children thrive and bloom. When the conditions of education are right, the seeds of possibility are activated and growth is inevitable. Marianne Franzese, MA, MS, has been working in the field of child development for more than 35 years. As a creative arts therapist and teacher, Franzese is the co-founder of Kid Esteem Inc. and principal of Spark Elementary. Her book The Sacred Weave of Mothering (Aslan Publishing, 2002) continues to provide comfort and inspiration for mothers and caregivers. Franzese can be reached at Info@SparkElementary.com. Natural Remedies for Thyroid Issues It is estimated that 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, while 60 percent of people that have the disease don’t know that they have it. Generally, although complications surrounding one’s thyroid and adrenal glands can vary with age, there are some culprits that are more widespread than others. Hashimoto’s is the most common thyroid disorder, and along with autoimmune illness overall, appears to be rapidly increasing in prevalence. For the adrenal glands, the major issues are adrenal fatigue, along with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Hypothyroidism—a “slow” thyroid—is typically more common for women than men, especially after the age of 60. Younger people can have hypothyroid conditions and overall, about five people out of 100 will, regardless of age. It can take time for someone to make the connection between the fatigue and weight gain that are often symptoms of a slow thyroid and the need for iodine and L-tyrosine or other nutrient interventions. Hyperthyroidism is much more common for men than women. This may be due to testosterone signaling or due to males having more muscle-to-fat ratios. However, adrenal fatigue is much more common in men. The causes are stress in acute situations occurring several times a day or week, general lack of stress management, testosterone supplementation or genetic factors. Men tend to have fewer circadian rhythm cues than women and will fight sleep and eating schedules. Women have more complex hormone balances than men and children. With monthly changes to powerful communicating hormones, there are more checkpoints that can fail. Women are eight times more likely to develop Hashimoto‘s disease. There are various natural supplements that can benefit the thyroid and adrenal glands, both nutrient based and herbal. Using diet and nutritional support to provide essential compounds for healthy function can be founda-
tional to a good treatment plan. Each gland has its own nutritional needs, such as the thyroid needing plenty of iodine and the adrenal gland needing adequate levels of vitamin C. Prescription medications as well as over-the-counter remedies provide little symptom relief. Because of this, natural medicine has become a logical choice for people with thyroid or adrenal issues. Sleep at the same time every night and wake at the same time every day. This simple change regulates the adrenal glands and their natural internal clock. Furthermore, the thyroid can start to communicate with the brain and other tissues when cortisol is controlled. Eat a whole foods diet rich in fruits and vegetables— nature’s natural medicine. Exercise regularly, as the muscles are huge communicators for hormone balancing. Cutting back on inflammatory foods, like sugars and refined grains, will help reduce some of the highs and lows associated with the buzz and crash of sweets and carbs, and make the day seem to run on a more even keel. And for some people, cutting back on coffee or other stimulants can have a remarkable effect. The entire endocrine system is sensitive to environmental toxins, endocrine disrupters, ongoing stress, poor nutrition, rogue inflammation, and emotional stressors. All of these work against the healthy function of the thyroid and adrenal glands. Source: Steven M. New guidelines that change the criteria for healthy blood pressure mean that nearly half of U.S. adults are now considered to have high blood pressure. The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have redefined the condition as being 130/80 instead of 140/90, a change considered by critics as overly beneficial to pharmaceutical companies. This criteria includes 80 percent of people over 65, triples the diagnosis for men under 45 and doubles it for women younger than 45. The revised guidelines encourage adopting lifestyle strategies in early stages of rising blood pressure like exercise, diet, weight loss and smoking cessation. Evidence-based alternative methods noted in a Canadian study include coenzyme Q10, dark chocolate, qigong, slow breathing, Transcendental Meditation and vitamin D. 16

In a survey of 171 midlife American women, more than 80 percent reported using complementary and alternative medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine researchers discovered. The most common choice was herbal teas, followed by women’s vitamins, flaxseed, glucosamine and soy supplements. Only 34 percent of the non-Hispanic white women and 14 percent of the Hispanic women discussed it with their doctors.

U.S. Midlife Women Choosing Natural Health Care
Young Women Outdo Male Peers in Oxygen Uptake Young women process oxygen about 30 percent faster and more efficiently than men when they begin exercising, according to a new study from Canada’s University of Waterloo. The ability to extract oxygen from the blood is an important fitness marker, which the researchers tested by having 18 young men and women exercise on treadmills. The women’s superior results indicate they are naturally less prone to muscle fatigue and poor performance. “The findings are contrary to the popular assumption that men’s bodies are more naturally athletic,” observes lead author Thomas Beltrame, Ph.D. Previous research had found that older men and male children tend to have faster oxygen uptake than women.

When an adult looks into the eyes of a baby, a synchronization of brain waves occurs that could indicate an intention to communicate, concludes a Cambridge University study of 36 infants. This coordinating supports the baby’s early learning and communication skills, according to the researchers. The effect, which researchers measured via electroencephalogram (EEG)-wired skullcaps, was strongest with eye-to-eye contact and weaker when the adult’s head was turned away. The more vocalizations—little sounds—the baby made, the greater their brainwaves synchronized with the adult.

We can celebrate Mother’s Day in many forms. You can be a mom to your children, whether they are biological or non-biological. You can be a mom to animals, or nurture those through your profession. There are many ways to unleash your inner “mother goddess.” In most descriptions of a mother goddess, there is connection to the Earth as a personification of nature. Many American Indian tribes have a special reverence for nature as Mother Earth. In these stories, there is a mutual respect between humans and their interaction with trees, plants, animals and natural forces, such as wind and rain. The Buddhist female Bodhisattva, Kwan Yin (also known as Quan Shi Yin or Kuan Yin), embodies traits of compassion, purity and fertility. She is known as the omnipresent Divine Mother, looking in all directions at once with her hundred eyes. In Chinese medicine, there are five elements, with earth being central. The other elements surrounding earth are water, fire, metal and wood. As in the Native American philosophy, Chinese culture also teaches respect for nature and interaction with it. Earth is seen as the grounding element for all other elements. Through time, mothers are seen as the grounding force in keeping families together. Our inner mother goddess can bring out our awareness and need to help others. As women, we often help others to a fault. It can become a habit that we allocate little time for ourselves. We can be a great nurturer, but also need boundaries to nurture our inner souls. For those of you that don’t know where to start to connect to your inner mother, volunteering for a charity or organization is a great way to start. When you are giving your time to help someone else, life takes on a whole new meaning. You will feel an inner happiness to give, rather than to receive. Is this not one of the aspects of love? For those of you that tend to overextend yourself with nurturing, may I suggest giving yourself permission to pamper yourself? Taking a walk on the beach or in the woods is a great way to rejuvenate. I recently spent a spa day with girlfriends at a wonderful spa/bath house in New Jersey. We all need time to refresh and renew our inner goddess.

Acetaminophen Linked to Delayed Language Skills Girls born to 754 Swedish mothers that used acetaminophen during pregnancy showed less ability in acquiring early language skills at 30 months of age, report Mount Sinai Health System study researchers. If the mothers took acetaminophen more than six times in early pregnancy, their daughters (but not their sons) were nearly six times more likely to have language delays than girls born to mothers that didn’t take the drug. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 65 percent of pregnant women in this country use acetaminophen, which is marketed for pain and fever relief in Tylenol and Excedrin, and included in many over-the-counter formulations such as NyQuil and Robitussin.

Belly Bloat
Want a Doctor who treats the WHOLE You? See an Integrative Physician Today! Find the perfect one for you in
Are you bloated? So many say yes. Before going further, let’s make sure we are on the same page. There a several different issues people call bloating. There’s digestive bloating and distention; pressure or discomfort in the abdomen, sometimes with it blowing up. Many use months of pregnancy to describe how much distention is going on. There is hormonal bloating, as many women describe preceding, during or following their menses. This bloating often coincides with changes in digestion—often constipation or loose stools. Some use “bloating” to describe the fact that their whole body has a bit of swelling; the skin just seems puffy. Urinary issues also often create bloating. Chronic bladder issues will appear as lower abdominal bloating and often can influence digestion, generally slowing or hastening the stools. There other forms of “bloating” as well. The common factor with any form of bloating is inflammation. Bloating, swelling, distention, hormone imbalance; these are all imbalances that either produce or are caused by inflammation. The thing about inflammation is that it makes it really hard, if not impossible, to lose weight when chronically inflamed. What happens is that if inflamed a few hormones of the body leave the normal homeostasis (balanced level) and try to help heal the issue. The side effect of this in chronic situations is weight gain and swelling. The most common hormone causing this mess is cortisol. Cortisol is one of several dozen hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Many have heard of it with regard to stress. When stressed, especially chronic stress, cortisol levels generally rise, causing swelling, bloating and weight gain as a side effect to attempting to balance the stress. Stress, as we generally think about it, is an emotional state. To your adrenal glands and body, in general, this is only one of three major stresses. We have emotional as well as physical and chemical stresses. An example of a physical stress is a trauma, bad posture, or chronic pain from an injury. Chemical stresses can include poor diet, toxicity or a hormone imbalance. Any of these stresses: physical, chemical or emotional tends to cause rises in cortisol levels. This again usually causes swelling. Bloating and inflammation most often contribute heavily to weight issues. I mention all the different ways to cause cortisol rise because to truly unlock the body’s potential to lose weight and keep it off, the actual cause of our cortisol imbalance must be identified and repaired. Depending on the source—or, more often, sources—of the cortisol imbalance, many therapies may be used to coax the body to heal its stress. Nutrition, enzymes, acupuncture, detoxification, bodywork, functional medicine techniques, and so many other fantastic modalities exist to help the body heal. The first step is accurate and timely diagnosis to treat the real source of the body’s imbalance.

“An Estimated 9 out of 10 Kids Suffer from ONE or MORE of These Symptoms”
Through extensive research it has been found that these signs and symptoms are the result of limited or no breastfeeding, resulting in weak tongue and orofacial muscles. The soft diet and processed foods that all of us eat starting from our infancy contribute to our weakened oral musculature and results in underdeveloped dental arches and jaws. This then leads to mouth breathing and snoring, swollen adenoids and tonsils, a low tongue position, a narrow palate, crooked and crowded teeth, and overbites and overjets. This vicious cascade of events then results in sleep disordered breathing in children and adults. The end product of not getting enough oxygen while sleeping can lead to debilitating symptoms such as nightmares and night terrors, ADD/ADHD, chronic allergies and others listed above.
Gently Expanding the dental arches, establishing nasal breathing, and training the tongue can alleviate or eliminate the above symptoms. Do You Have a Bitter Taste in Your Mouth All the Time?
a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
We all deal with a bitter or bad taste in our mouth from time to time, especially after eating garlic, or pungent or sour foods. However, when the taste lasts for a long time or happens unexpectedly, it can be concerning. Our sense of taste is complex; it can be affected by many factors, including poor dental hygiene, dry mouth or pregnancy. Treating a persistent bitter taste should be approached like treating any underlying condition, especially if it lasts for more than one week. An altered taste in the mouth, medically known as dysgeusia, can be described as unpleasant and can last for a long time until the underlying cause is treated. People with dysgeusia may experience a constant taste that they often describe as one of the following: • salty • bitter • rancid or foul • metallic The taste can be distracting, and may even make it hard to taste other things while eating or drinking. A person may still have that taste even after brushing their teeth. They may also experience other symptoms depending on the cause. The following conditions could be the cause: Dry mouth – also known as xerostomia, happens when the mouth is not producing enough saliva. Saliva helps reduce bacteria in the mouth. Having less saliva means more bacteria can survive and could be the result of a variety of factors. People with a persistently dry mouth should talk to
GERD or acid reflux – Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux can be another source of a bitter taste. These conditions occur when the sphincter at the top of the stomach is week, and allows acid or bile to rise up into the esophagus. This tends to irritate the food pipe, and can cause burning in the chest or stomach while bringing about a foul or bitter taste in the mouth. Pregnancy – It is common that in the first trimester for some women to experience a bitter taste because the hormones in the body fluctuate during pregnancy. This change can cause heightened senses, making some pregnant women notice a metallic, bitter or tinny taste in their mouth. This usually goes away later in the pregnancy or after giving birth. Oral thrush – is a yeast infection in the mouth and causes white spots or blotches that appear on the mouth, tongue or throat. It may also cause a bitter or unpleasant taste in the mouth that will last until the infection is treated. These are only a few of the causes of that long-lasting bitter taste. At the end of the day, if the bitter taste lasts longer than a week, you should consult your dentist to identify the underlying cause and treat that. Butterflies in your stomach, a gut feeling, and a case of bad nerves. These are common expressions we use to describe emotions that we feel in our gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is no coincidence that you feel emotions like anger, anxiety and sadness in your “gut.” Your GI tract is speaking to your nervous system at every moment of the day. In simple terms, your brain has a direct effect on your gut and your gut has a direct effect on your brain. Stomach pain or intestinal distress, e.g., bloating, reflux, indigestion, gas, diarrhea or constipation, can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress and depression. Stress, depression and other psychological factors can affect movement and contractions of the GI tract. Chronic stress, depression and anxiety will create inflammation within the lining of the gut, cause tissue breakdown, and deplete essential hormones that you need to maintain a good healthy gut. The happy hormone serotonin that we use in our brain is also used in our gut. Remember, the gut is the second brain. Because of the intricate relationship of the brain and gut, it is not uncommon that conventional doctors will use SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) to help treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). SSRIs are typically used to treat depression. Rather than being reliant on an external source of serotonin from medication, patients have great success in boosting their own production of this hormone when they treat the digestive ailment. Due to the intricate nature of the gut-brain connection, you must treat anxiety and digestive issues together for success.

Meds in Urban Streams Drive Microbial Resistance
A new study published in the journal Ecosphere confirms that in urban streams, persistent pharmaceutical pollution can cause aquatic microbial communities to become resistant to drugs. Researchers evaluated the presence of pharmaceuticals, including painkillers, stimulants, antihistamines and antibiotics, in four streams in Baltimore, Maryland. Then they measured the microbial response to drug exposure. Selected study sites represented a gradient of development from suburban to urban. Emma Rosi, an aquatic ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies and lead author on the study, explains, “Wastewater treatment facilities are not equipped to remove many pharmaceutical compounds. We were interested in how stream microorganisms, which perform key ecosystem services like removing nutrients and breaking down leaf litter, respond to pharmaceutical pollution. When we expose streams to pharmaceutical pollution, we are unwittingly altering their microbial communities, yet little is known about what this means for ecological function and water quality.”

Recycled Plastic Transforms into Prosthetics The emerging technology of three-dimensional (3-D) printing can benefit the world in many ways. Re:Purpose for Good, in Australia, creates robotically 3-D printed prosthetic devices from recycled plastic and e-waste. It’s difficult to customize prosthetics, so more invasive surgery is often needed to make standard sizes fit the patient. Other companies produce 3-D printed prosthetic hands and arms, but Re:Purpose for Good customizes both hands and feet at a much lower cost. The company’s robotics and prosthetics engineer Gerardo Montoya, who had been working on 3-D printing prosthetics for children in Mexico, merged the idea with a desire to do something about the 8 million tons of plastic entering the oceans. Along with plastic waste, they also use e-waste such as discarded smartphones that have all the circuitry and microprocessors needed for advanced features. The company even plans to teach their prosthetic-making process to children as part of their science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, so they can learn 3-D printing skills. They’re making it open source so more people can get involved without patent restrictions.

Africans Unite to Save Rhinos
The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit aims not only to protect rhinoceroses in South Africa by patrolling the Balule Nature Reserve, in Greater Kruger National Park, but to also be a role model in their communities. It’s the first majority-female, anti-poaching unit in the country. Founded in 2013 by Transfrontier Africa NPC to protect the Olifants West Region of Balule, the Black Mambas were invited within a year to expand into other regions, and now protect all boundaries of the reserve. These 32 young women and two men want their communities to understand that the benefits are greater through rhino conservation rather than poaching, as they address the local social and moral decay that results from poaching. Their concern is also for their children’s sake because the sham economy has corrupted morals and brought narcotics into their communities. To make a donation, visit BlackMambas.org.

Grocer Shuns Plastic Trays
The British supermarket chain Iceland is planning to eliminate or drastically reduce plastic packaging for more than 1,000 of its house-label products by the end of 2023, switching to paper-based trays instead. Nigel Broadhurst, joint managing director of Iceland, explains that the typical ready meal was packaged in a particularly bad way. “It is currently in a black plastic tray. That black plastic is the worst possible option in terms of toxins going into the ground and the ability to recycle that product.” He also notes that instead of the usual plastic bag, grocers could put netting around a bunch of apples the same as with oranges. Iceland’s research found that 80 percent of shoppers would endorse a supermarket’s move to go plastic-free.

Love Rocks
Inspiring Messages that Surprise
Artistically decorated rocks featuring inspirational messages are turning up in Mobile, Alabama, and along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline as part of The Kindness Rocks Project (TheKindnessRocksProject. com). Anyone can paint rocks and “plant” them for someone else to discover. Likewise, everyone is invited to hunt for kindness rocks. Those that find a rock are free to take it, plant it somewhere else or leave it for someone else to find. The grassroots movement was created to spread inspiration and motivation for unsuspecting recipients through the random placement of the rocks in public spaces. The goal is to encourage others to find creative ways to reach out and brighten someone else’s day unexpectedly, whether it’s through kindness rocks, love notes or random acts of generosity.

All That Glitters Sparkly Microbeads Face Ban
Scientists have called for glitter to be prohibited due to the threat it poses to wildlife. The glistening, decorative, plastic microbead powder may seem harmless, but environmental researchers report it’s a dangerous pollutant, particularly in oceans. Trisia Farrelly, Ph.D., of New Zealand’s Massey University, notes, “Their diminutive size and sparkling appearance make them appealing to animals, which will eat them.” Seven U.S. states now restrict the use and sale of products with microbeads; California was the first in 2015. The British government will ban rinse-off microbeads—plastics of less than one millimeter in length—found in exfoliating scrubs, shower gels, toothpaste and even on greeting cards. Plastics are found in a third of all fish caught in Great Britain, according to a study by Richard Thompson, Ph.D., professor of marine biology at Plymouth University. He says of shower gel with glitter particles, “That stuff is going to escape down the plughole and potentially enter the environment.”
Locals Prevail Against Bristol Bay Mine
Alaskan mining critics cheered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency decision to maintain an existing policy not to permit the Northern Dynasty Minerals’ Pebble copper and gold mine in Bristol Bay. They maintain that the project’s toxic byproducts would threaten fisheries and other natural resources. Alannah Hurley, with United Tribes of Bristol Bay, a group opposing the mine, has said that members of the tribes she represents are willing to lie down in front of bulldozers to protect the waters. She notes, “Ideally, we would like these [protections] finalized, and the battle to protect Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine and mines like Pebble is far from over. But the fact that these protections remain in place and can be used within the process is a very positive step in the effort to protect the Bristol Bay watershed for generations to come.” 30

Recycling IQ
Take a Quiz to Help the Planet
As ambitious folks undertake spring cleaning, questions arise about what is and isn’t recyclable, as well as how to do the right thing on an ongoing basis. The world can benefit from our efforts: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that every ton of recycled paper saves the energy equivalent of 322 gallons of gasoline, while a ton of aluminum cans saves 21 barrels of oil. Putting the wrong items into a recycle bin demands extra time and effort at local facilities. We can test our knowledge by taking this short true or false quiz. Please note that local standards may vary, so check for specifics. 1. Both paper and plastic bags are recyclable. 2. All paper in the form of phone books, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper and paperboard, is recyclable. 3. Cardboard pizza boxes can be recycled despite absorption of grease and food residue. 4. Aluminum, steel and tin-plated cans can all go in the recycling bin. 5. Some of these items are recyclable: Styrofoam food containers and cups, used paint cans, sewing needles, non-empty aerosol cans, garden hoses and clothing. 6. Recycling broken glass is the same as intact glass. 7. It’s easy to recycle a broken or outmoded cell phone or laptop computer. 8. It’s vital to recycle office and other paper. Answers: 1. False; generally, only paper bags are recyclable unless a grocer or big-box retailer has its own program for plastic bags.

Why do we need to detox? There are significantly high levels of toxins in the world today, including air pollution, food preservatives, carcinogens, medica32

tion overload, cleaning products, and even chemicals in the water we drink. Added up through time, these toxins can cause major health problems, lack of energy, irritability, sugar cravings, skin irritations, bags under the eyes, and lack of general well-being! It is more important than ever that we educate ourselves on how to prevent health risks and how to naturally treat what ails us. If you’ve been feeling exhausted lately, have skin problems, body aches and pains, digestive issues, or trouble gaining or losing weight, it may be time for a body detox.
Which service would you recommend first and why? We offer many services, but I always recommend colon hydrotherapy first. Like Bernard Jensen said, “Death begins in the colon.” Ninety percent of your immune system lives in your colon, so it’s important to keep it clean. I know it’s a taboo
NaturalAwakeningsLI.com
We offer a self-administered private cleansing experience. Your colon hydrotherapy experience is completely private and safe. No need to feel embarrassed or ashamed. You will walk out of our offices feeling lighter and healthier. We also keep our pricing affordable so our clients can consistently make detoxing a part of their lifestyle. With all the toxins our bodies are constantly being bombarded with, we understand the need for detoxification! Cleansing Concepts works closely with naturopathic doctors, Lyme disease specialists, chiropractors and even some gastroenterologists to provide the services their clients desperately need to achieve health.
How can a person live a toxic-free life? Living a perfect life free of toxins is just impossible. People are overmedicated; the food is genetically modified; the water we drink and shower in is toxic; and the chemicals in household products are killing us. However, you can live a balanced life with detoxification with our many safe services, including bio-electric lymphatic drainage (BELD); infrared sauna therapy; ionic foot baths; and, of course, colon hydrotherapy. “The future of your health begins here” has been our motto for 10 years now, and it’s becoming more true every day!

AN INTERVIEW WITH
Hope Floats Owner Kimberly Boone How did you start your business?
Your Market is Our Readers. Let Us Introduce You to Them!
Hope Floats began in my own home in 2013. After trying floating myself and experiencing the benefits I was receiving, I wanted to help others that were also struggling with the same issues. I am in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction and still suffering with anxiety and depression. I could not safely take drugs and was looking for an alternative therapy. Sensory deprivation had been researched, and findings showed the therapy helps those with addiction. I found being in a sound-proof pod filled with warm water and Epsom salt offered relief from issues myself and others were having. Floating started to become more popular on the East Coast around this time, and
I found the need to move to a retail location within six months. I was a single mother of four children living at home with me along with two dogs, and strangers coming in and out of the house at all hours was getting complicated! I now have two locations—one in Bethesda, Maryland, and the other here on Long Island, in Williston Park.
What services do you offer? We currently have two tanks, each in a private room with a private shower. At Hope Floats, our guests have a luxurious experience. We offer all amenities, such as towels, robes, slippers, shampoo, cream rinse, and body lotion, as well as a blow dry bar. We also have an infrared sauna large enough to accommodate up to four people.

What would you say are the benefits of floating? Floating offers relief from stress, anxiety, addiction, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and hypertension. Float therapy enhances relaxation, healing, meditation, athletic training, sleep and concentration. The infrared sauna provides a gentle, soothing and therapeutic heat that promotes relaxation, detoxification, lower blood pressure, weight loss, pain relief, and improved circulation.
Who might benefit from your services? Anyone suffering from everyday stress to those suffering from more serious issues, such as chronic pain, to those who want to improve their athletic training and concentration.
What do you hear from your clients? We hear many positive things from our guests, but the one we hear most is, “I feel so much better; I can’t wait to come back!” They also like the spa-like environment Hope Floats offers.
Who should come to Hope Floats? Anyone who wants to improve their mental and physical well-being in a natural, holistic way will benefit from floatation therapy and/or infrared sauna sessions. The Long Island Hope Floats location is 52 Hillside Ave., in Williston Park. For more information, call 516-307-1560. See ad on this page.

HEALING THE HARD STUFF Natural Approaches Resolve Major Illnesses by Linda Sechrist
A
lthough natural health enthusiasts may recognize alternative healing modalities as a preferred approach to treatment, in the face of major health issues, even they tend to join the crowd that’s turning first to conventional medicine. Thus, many gentler modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, co-authored by doctors of naturopathy Michael T. Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, remain largely untapped resources. Ignored because they are unsupported by traditional sciencebased medicine, holistic measures such as acupuncture, energy medicine, essential oils, herbs, detoxification, health-promoting diets, homeopathy, prayer and meditation, supplementation, yoga, massage and naturopathy are sacrificed in favor of often painful medical procedures and prescription drugs which can’t claim to permanently cure anything and can have many harmful side effects. 36

Lack of Awareness
“A patient that dabbles in holistic medicine for minor health issues such as indigestion, headache or insomnia often turns to conventional methods after receiving a serious diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer because they are scared,” observes holistic physician Dr. Wendy Warner, medical director of Medicine in Balance, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The co-author of Boosting Your Immunity for Dummies suggests that relatively few people turn to natural solutions for both preventive and therapeutic measures because they’re unaware they exist. Integrative oncologists and endocrinologists that are aware of the benefits of natural complementary methods are scarce. Relatively few conventional doctors are educated in functional medicine. “Yet complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage and some essential oils can support the immune system and help an individual deal with stress experienced from coping with their illness,” says Warner.
NaturalAwakeningsLI.com
Rob Wergin, an experienced energy medicine practitioner, speaks from experience regarding clients that consult him for lifethreatening diagnoses. “When I see them, they’re desperate and have exhausted all conventional methods. I’m their lastditch effort,” remarks Wergin. The most frequent reason he hears is, “My family, friends and doctor told me not to waste my money on charlatans.” “People find it challenging to put faith in natural methods and are nervous about going against a doctor’s advice until they feel or see positive results; even these may not provide sufficient motivation to continue with alternative treatments,” he says. “I believe this is the result of the influence of pharmaceutical ads promising results, the medical community’s belief in proof solely through clinical trials, websites like Quackwatch. com and well-meaning friends insisting that the conventional route is the only way to go. It’s sad to see the gravity of these influences pulling clients back into solely believing in the Western model of medicine,” says Wergin. Ann Lee, a doctor of naturopathy, acupuncturist and founder of the Health for Life Clinic, Inc., in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, notes, “This mindset continues to get reinforced by insurance companies that do not cover alternatives. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses also influences a patient’s choices.” Kelly Noonan-Gores and Adam Schomer, director and producer, respectively, of the documentary film HEAL, suggest that unconscious conditioning plays the biggest role in an individual’s choices. “We are deeply conditioned to view medical specialists and prestigious medical institutions as the ones with all the answers. Sometimes they do and sometimes they

don’t,” says Noonan-Gores, who intends to have her film awaken viewers to the possibilities of alternative paths of healing. As just one other example noted in the film, thousands have used the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), tapping on their body to help release the trauma and stress often associated with illness.
“Before, I wasn’t familiar with EFT, which I continue to use and benefit from. However, despite everything I’ve learned, I can’t give up on all Western medicine, put my faith in alternatives and let my intuition and faith guide me to healing. It’s easier to be skeptical than to have faith,” Lee says.
website FloridaOilsRN.com that reaches hundreds of individuals worldwide. She advises, “Reach out to people that you see are having positive results with a different healing system than yours. Ask them to show, help and teach you. I’ve seen many people restored to health by using methods that science is only beginning to understand.”
Resistance to Change
Quiet Role Models
Sheila Tucker, a resident of Navarre, Florida, has been a registered nurse for 20 years, practicing in hospital settings such as critical care, emergency and administration. “I know and understand doctors, surgeries and pharmaceutical treatments and hospitals,” says Tucker, who recalls that throughout her life she was taught to believe in a system that suddenly stopped working for her. “In 2014, I was dying from a rare autoimmune condition, requiring fulltime care, and planning my funeral. Doctors had tried everything, yet my health continued to decline. When I saw a friend’s Facebook posts about her use of essential oils, I was curious, but reluctant to reach out, and didn’t want anyone to know that I called her for advice,” recalls Tucker. “Shortly after my friend arrived with her oils, my husband came home with our daughter, who had strep throat and a fever. She made us promise to use selected oils through the night and prayed with us.” Tucker attributes the miracle of her daughter’s turnaround the next morning to shifting her paradigm and opening her up to believing in the healing power of essential oils. Thanks to her friend and role model, Tucker learned how to use therapeuticgrade oils, supplements and a healthy diet to cleanse her body of the heavy toxic load accumulated from several years of expensive drug treatments. Today, she is a healthy and enthusiastic advocate, and her personal results opened the eyes of her physician to the point where she also shifted her own philosophy of healing. Tucker now offers educational classes in her office and online through her
“Outside of any dominant paradigm, it’s easier to cast suspicion than to make curious inquiry and, over time, working within a dominant worldview creates polarity, the antithesis of ‘wholism’. An inclusive approach integrates all medical and complementary approaches, as well as interaction with the natural world,” says Patrick Hanaway, a family physician and founder of Family to Family Medicine, in Asheville, North Carolina. Hanaway, the former director of medical education for the Institute for Functional Medicine and the first medical director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, explains, “Doctors have a rigorous job filled with responsibility. Change is difficult and investigating vastly different ways of practicing medicine requires a degree of curiosity and openness. I am heartened by thought leaders and heads of top medical schools who are presently opening up to functional medicine, natural medicine and complementary approaches.” “The paradigm shift we are ushering in has been 50 years in the making,” assesses Hanaway. “Some medical professionals are immersed in a polar view of right and wrong, offering personal attacks and disparaging comments to maintain control of the dialogue. This is not appreciated by patients who look to the doctor as a teacher—the Latin docere means to teach. “The movement to change medicine and the cultural paradigm of healing is a marathon, not a sprint, and those of us involved are prepared to stay the course.”
“The conventional medical community wants to maintain the model in which they have heavily invested centuries of time, energy and money. Patients that investigate integrative and complementary medicine may resist hearing that in order to get well, they might need to change their worldview and lifestyle, take a leave of absence from their job, develop a spiritual practice, exercise or maybe even leave a toxic relationship,” says Schomer. “Conventional medicine says take this pill and keep living your life the same way,” says Schomer. “We are not demonizing doctors, pharmaceuticals or the medical system. We simply believe that individuals are more empowered to heal when they take control of their health.” Eva Lee, a resident of Los Angeles featured in the documentary, suffers from a rare and unpredictable form of blistering skin inflammation. “I’ve tested negative for faulty genes and all sorts of rare viruses and bacteria, which helped point me towards holistic methods. So far, following the directives of Dr. Mark Emerson, a chiropractor specializing in nutrition, in Maui, Hawaii, who I met while filming, has helped my body become healthier and deal with inflammation levels that rapidly reduced as soon as I detoxed and eliminated meat and dairy from my diet,” says Lee. Still, it’s hard for her to accept that her condition could be due to the type of stress and suppressed emotions that Anthony William explores in his book Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal.

KELLY NOONAN-GORES ON HOW WE SHAPE OUR HEALTH
A
by April Thompson
fter Los Angeles native Kelly Noonan-Gores spent 20 years in front of the camera as an actress, she turned her talents to producing award-winning films like Tooken, Beneath and Take a Seat. She considers her latest, the documentary HEAL (HealDocumentary.com), to be her ultimate achievement. “I included as many inspiring stories of healing change as possible to expand viewers’ beliefs in what’s possible, to alter the narrative around mystery illnesses being incurable or cancer equaling death,” says Noonan-Gores. When she was prescribed Prilosec for acid reflux at age 28, Noonan-Gores decided she was too young and otherwise healthy to become dependent on it. By taking an integrative nutrition course, she realized the possibilities of alternative healing methods, catalyzing an ongoing exploration into optimizing life and health through the powers of mind, body and spirit. “We are not the passive victims of faulty genes; our lifestyle choices, thoughts, and beliefs shape our health,” says Noonan-Gores, a longtime practitioner of yoga and meditation. HEAL features uplifting interviews with the scientists, visionaries and healers that inspired her, including Deepak Chopra, Bruce Lipton, Marianne Williamson and patients diagnosed with diverse ailments that sought different healing modalities to take their health into their own hands.
NaturalAwakeningsLI.com
What are some common elements in the stories of patients featured in HEAL? One common thread revolves around our subconscious programming. From the time we’re born, we are downloading “programs” or belief systems from society, parents, teachers and whoever and whatever else is in our environment. Many have learned through their own healing journeys of negative belief systems running their lives; each one had to become aware of these beliefs in order to change. Another is that when events are too painful, we consciously suppress or unconsciously repress them, and that trauma stays in our cells and might manifest in disease. To move that stuck energy, we must heal that emotional trauma to allow physical ailments to transform. A third theme is understanding how stress affects our lives and immune systems, and doing things to manage or mitigate it through tools like meditation or breath work. Some of the patients worked with spiritual psychologists using Emotional Freedom Techniques to release past stress held in their body, shifting beliefs to a trusting, non-victim place. Dietary shifts also made a difference. In acute healing, we realize the effect of different foods which can reduce or exacerbate inflammation.
Which messages in how the body and mind collaborate to promote healing are audiences keying in on? Visualization is a powerful and widespread tool in healing; we can use imagination to reframe and tell a different story. Research has shown that visualizations can affect brain chemistry and lessen side effects. The mind is conditioned to go to the worst-case scenario; we can instead retrain it to focus on the best-case scenario, and what we want to happen, increasing the likelihood it will occur.
What role do faith and belief systems play in the healing journey? It all comes down to what we believe. If you believe in and expect an effect, like what we see with a placebo, the brain will create and release natural chemicals that might be prompted by a targeted drug. Believing you are a victim of genes and circumstance
induces stress, whereas having faith in a loving universe produces greater ease.
How do emotions influence health and healing? Gregg Braden and Joe Dispenza, interviewed in HEAL, discuss how rage, jealousy, trauma and fear put the body in a stress response and create inflammation and other detrimental effects. But love, kindness, joy, gratitude and compassion release healing hormones and neurochemicals like oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine. It’s empowering to know that when negative emotions arise, you can become aware of and release them, then pivot to focus on gratitude or do something that cultivates joy. It’s a moment-bymoment choice.
Healthy people require a healthy planet; how can we apply these same principles to bring our world back into balance? The more conscious we become, the more we treat ourselves, others and our Earth with compassion. As more people awaken and demand a different response, the paradigm will shift. Health care will have to change as we apply the power in our hearts and minds. Our bodies are a microcosm of the universe; the planet can heal itself and thrive as we remove the toxins and become fully aware of what we are putting in the air, water and soil. Midlife Purpose Search:
action? Be aware. There is always someone that will tell you what they can’t do: “I can never take a good picture”; “I don’t have the ability to beautify my home.” Maybe you already hold a job in your field but are not feeling inspired. Then be aware of what’s coming down the pike and be ready to step up. Like when the boss says, “We need a marketing brochure,” you can say, “I can do it.” Gain valuable experience.
Step 3-Write (again). Write a purpose
You Are Not Alone by Kelly Martinsen
I
will let you in on a secret: Lately I have found myself becoming teary-eyed whenever I pass the school bus stop near my house. I have been caught behind this same bus a million times; usually I am annoyed by it because I am late for something, but recently I savor the stop. I watch the same bright-eyed, dimpled little boy and his mother waiting eagerly, and I smile as the child anxiously releases his parent’s hand and cautiously, but with excitement, climbs onto the bus. I become nostalgic as I think, “This was my life not too long ago; this was my child.” I am jealous of this mother, who is not that much younger than I am. Not jealous because her 30-something-year-old smile is devoid of wrinkles (well, maybe a little )—the truth is I envy her purpose. Ten years ago, I didn’t need a job (although I did have one) because I had a purpose: raising my children. My job took care of things like paying my mortgage, but it was never my purpose. I even left my job for a while and joined the ranks of the #SAHM (stay-at-home moms), thinking this would help me delve deeper into my purpose. My purpose was raising my beautiful children, and my performance review was their health and happiness. I loved my purpose. Yet, as I drop a forgotten lunch off for my almost senior in high 40
Long Island Edition
school (seriously, I know I shouldn’t do that), and I wait behind the bus as the boy with the dimples gets on, I have nothing else to do but recognize that I am being “laid off.” Oh, don’t get me wrong, I know they still need me in this dicey teenage existence they are navigating through. But at the same time, they are spreading their wings and preparing to fly in search of their own purpose. However, as I allow and encourage them to do this, I find my own wings are kind of worn and a little crumpled. I seem to lack … purpose. Are you also facing midlife angst— watching your children let go of your hand and feeling a bit lost, constantly contemplating, “What’s next for me?” If so, perhaps the following ideas can help.
Step 1-Write! Every day when I wake
up, before I do anything (okay, that’s a lie—usually it’s after I’ve had my coffee), I write down talents I possess or passions and ideas that I have. I park them on paper. Doing this helped me to recognize I am creative and passionate about health and helping others.
Step 2-Be Aware. Opportunity doesn’t knock, but you should. Are you constantly seeing the talents you possess? Are you a good home decorator or photographer? How will you move these from paper to
NaturalAwakeningsLI.com
plan. I am a believer in the law of attraction, to some degree. The late motivational author Louise Hay started her day with positive affirmations, and she credits this practice for her abundant life. I like that (a lot). Hay had affirmations and she wrote a plan, which she affectionately called her “little blue book.” That guide later became the foundation of her first bestseller. Hay found her life’s purpose, put it in writing and did not deviate from it; and in the end, her affirmations and her plan led to her abundance. Write your plan.
Step 4-Give it meaning. Steps 1-3
are what I utilized to change my life at 37 years of age after being laid off from my position as a marketer/researcher in a biotech company. I wrote in my journal and when I found the things that stood out, I focused on them, affirmed them and planned for them. I am now publisher of my own wellness magazine and have written my first book, but at times I feel the need for more purpose. So, I am giving some of the royalties from the book to nonprofit organizations.
Step 5-Adjust. Your purpose changes
as you do. Accept if the universe takes you in a different direction. There is no such thing as failure—simply by trying, you have succeeded at something. Now go ahead, dust off your wings (and your pen) and find your purpose. Kelly Martinsen is publisher of Natural Awakenings Long Island and author of A Year of Inspired Living (HCI Books). Moving Through
MENOPAUSE Exercising Reduces Symptoms by Marlaina Donato
T
ransitioning through menopause and the years of perimenopausal hormone fluctuation leading up to the finale can be physically and emotionally challenging for many women. Consistently following a healthy diet and positive lifestyle are important, and health researchers, doctors and midlife women can attest to the multidimensional benefits of exercise. Perks may include reduction of menopausal discomfort, better brain function, stronger bones and reversal of estrogen dominance syndrome that can set the stage for fibroids, cystic breasts, cancer, migraines and weight gain.
Get Moving
Studies of 3,500 women in South and Central America have shown that a more active life reduces hot flashes and night sweats. The results, published in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society, reveal that sedentary individuals often experience increased intensity of related symptoms like insomnia and irritability. Aerobic exercise such as regular walking, hiking, swimming or biking might also help the brain produce neurochemicals that are compromised when estrogen levels drop. Sue Markovitch, author and owner of Clear Rock Fitness, in Columbus, Ohio, recommends aerobic exercise. “I believe our bodies were made to move. One of the amazing gifts of fitness is it’s truly never too late. When we incorporate daily movement in our lives, all the other systems in the body will work more according to plan. Simply taking a daily walk helps balance brain chemistry,” says Markovitch, who specializes in improving fitness levels for women over 40. “Walking is fitness magic, whether it’s on a treadmill, outside or in the pool. Get your heart rate into an aerobic zone, preferably for 30 to 45 minutes. I’ve heard testimony 42
Long Island Edition
NaturalAwakeningsLI.com
after testimony of improved sleep, less back or joint pain and better mood.” She also suggests adding a few weekly sessions of resistance training to daily walks. Most health professionals agree that balance is the key. Jeanne D. Andrus, a menopause expert and author of I Just Want to Be ME Again, in Covington, Louisiana, recommends cardio, resistance training and exercise that increases flexibility and core strength. “For a beginner, this may include two to four days of walking, one to three days of strength training and one to three days of yoga or Pilates, with the goal being three and a half hours of activity per week.” Of course, all of these need to be at appropriate levels for the woman’s condition and goals,” advises Andrus. According to studies led by Helen Jones, Ph.D., from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, three, 30-to-45-minute aerobic sessions a week reduced hot flashes and yielded the most significant results.
Go Easy
While some conventional approaches suggest vigorous exercise, many holistic professionals caution against extremes. “It’s important to individualize, and in my ongoing research it’s clear that the high-intensity strength and sculpting approach so often promoted and perceived as necessary to maintain shape, weight and health is a myth,” says Dr. Eden Fromberg, an obstetrician, gynecologist and founder of Holistic Gynecology New York, in Manhattan. Instead, Fromberg recommends an integrated approach to exercise that supports connective tissue and joints. While some forms of exercise including yoga are perceived as gentler than others, she warns against an all-or-nothing strategy, noting, “Intense, deep stretching and joint-straining may cause injury more easily during hormonal transition.” Andrus concurs, “If high cortisol levels are involved and accompanied by insomnia, stress placed on the body by rigorous exercise will increase these levels and actually lower available energy.” She also advises adopting a non-aggressive approach for osteoporosis. “Weight-bearing exercise is a must, but if bone loss is already present, start much more gradually to ensure that bones are protected.”
Lighten Up
Exercise can be more enjoyable than doing chores. Recreational activities such as dancing, biking or hopping on the swings at the playground are fun ways to do something good for both body and spirit. Menopause can be a time for personal expansion and an invitation for self-care that might have been neglected or postponed. Fromberg believes we can all revitalize our resources at any stage of life, and the years surrounding menopause call for us to tune into ourselves even more. “What seems like a disruption is an opportunity to listen deeply and reimagine and reorganize one’s life on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. WHAT IS
YogAnalysis?
Y
ogAnalysis was created by the President of the Diagnosis Foundation, Dr. John Wallman, and his wife, Pamela Wallman. He created similar analysis programs for various sports, including weight training and golf. For three years, he assisted at the U.S. Open using his unique analysis measurements. Pamela Wallman, a yoga instructor, saw how this type of analysis could help the yoga practitioner in the same way it was helping pro golfers. This is how YogAnalysis the company was born. What is YogAnalysis? First and foremost, it is not a form of yoga; it is instead a system of diagnostic assessments to help a yoga practitioner gain awareness of their body in their yoga poses. There are 108 assessments that check for strength of individual muscles and flexibility of every major joint in every direction, and then a plan is given to the yogi based on the analysis. The assessments inform yoga practitioners which poses are good for their body and which poses are bad or need to be modified as well as which areas need corrective exercises or stretches.
The assessments take time; they are done over a period of months. The process begins with the first 27 assessments, after which the client gets a sheet for each abnormal finding showing them what they can improve, work on and strengthen. When the client returns, they recheck those first assessments. If the areas have been strengthened, then the analyst will move on to the next assessment in the series. The yogi leaves with corrective exercises and a summary of poses to work on. The analysis also includes an in-depth computerized 3-D motion capture analysis to determine the functional movement of the body as it enters in and out of poses. “The first assessment is usually 27 tests, and if, say, 15 are abnormal, the client leaves with exercises to correct them,” explains John Wallman. “When they return in a month, hopefully everything has been corrected. Frequently that is not the case. Usually there are still a few from the first assessment that need additional work. So we continue with those that aren’t yet perfected, along with analyzing others. A month later, we test the progress. A typical
person may take a year to reach a state of higher performance. A high-level athlete, like the top-level professionals at the U.S. Open, go through an assessment at 6 a.m. for 30 to 40 muscle tests, find two or three things that are off, do work for an hour, then go and play a round of golf, and repeat.” The speed of correction is in part determined by the level of athleticism. “An example of some things we may notice and correct would be in the yoga pose of a full-body twist. That twist and push should come from your feet, but often people twist from their head, which is a more unstable approach, gives inconsistent results and leads to a greater chance of injury,” adds John Wallman. Currently, the field of yoga analysis is booming, and there is a need for more people to be certified, he points out. YogAnalysis certification comes in three levels. In level one, yoga instructors are taught how to follow up once people have been analyzed. “Someone may come to YogAnalysis for an assessment and leave with exercises and pose variations—a YogAnalysis certified practitioner can help the student to implement the corrective exercises, poses and practices.” The second level of training teaches the yoga instructor or therapist to do the assessments, and the muscle strength and range of motion testing. In level three, the highest level, they are trained in the utilization of the computerized movement imaging component. As part of the course, they get a set of equipment and training. “Yoga analysis helps people learn how to listen to their body,” says John Wallman. “This is what we hear in yoga—‘listen to your body.’ When yoga practitioners experience what each muscle feels like and see each range of motion for every joint, they learn how to listen to their body much more deeply. This results in an outcome that is safer, more enjoyable and leads to faster progress when doing yoga.” YogAnalysis is located at 2805 Veterans Memorial Hwy., Ste. 8, in Ronkonkoma. “For 42 years we searched for something to take care of Restless Leg Syndrome. Not only does this product work but it works instantly! It’s Terrific. I recommend it to anyone who has this problem.” - Robert- Nebraska
Now you can end Sleep Apnea , Restless Legs and Leg Cramps and get a good Night’s sleep – night after night. Hi, I’m Steve Frank and I suffered from sleep apnea for years, so I know exactly what you’re going through. I even tried the CPAP machine but I could not sleep with anything strapped to my face. It was a serious problem and I was determined to find an answer. As an herbalist, I diligently pursued a group of herbs that would correct this problem and thank goodness, my persistence paid off! My patent-pending formulation has helped thousands and I use it every night. Now you can try it too! My Mom asked me what to do about persistent leg cramps. She had tried all the suggested supplements but still had problems. I put together a group of herbs to relax nerves, reduce tension and increase circulation. It worked great for her! Later, I found that it works for Restless Legs as well. Now you can use it too.
You owe it to yourself & your spouse to try these great products! 50

THE PATH TO HEALTHY LIVING STARTS WITH YOUR MOUTH
Upcycle your extracted teeth
A tooth extraction is one of the most performed procedure by dentists all over the world and throughout history. Currently, extracted teeth are considered to be a biological waste. But what if there is a way that we can upcycle extracted teeth by creating an autologous bone grafting material. This material can then be placed at the site of extraction in order to avoid the bone trauma that can be caused by extracting a tooth. Low bone density at the extraction site can have long lasting effects in the esthetic, phonetic and function of your teeth. Using the Smart Dentin Grinder from KometaBio we are able to utilize extracted teeth and convert them into bacteria-free autologous dentin material to be use for immediate bone grafting in about 15- 20 minutes. The extracted tooth goes through a process of cleaning, grinding, demineralization and sterilization in order to be an effective graft material which is biocompatible with the patient and has a low chance of rejection. Why does it work? Dentin is virtually identical to bone in composition and proven to be an ideal grafting material. Bone and dentin undergo a process of fusion (ankylosis) rather than resorption. This process creates stronger and longer lasting density at the extraction site.
